summary The application of a Mathematical Programming (M.P.) technique, typical of Operational Research (O. R.), is proposed as a means to cope with the decisional problem of layout dimensioning and arrangement. Within the ambit of O.R., Mathematical Programming. deals with decisional problems of simplest structure: only one decision factor, only one preference function, complete (deterministic) knowledge of the environment in which one operates.

Such a problem, in standard form, presents an objective function Z=f(x), of n variables x, to be minimized and a system of linear equations and/or inequalities, on the same variables, which represent the constraints and which define an admissible area for the solution.

The architectural organism is modelled as an assembly of parallelepiped shaped space entities or units, provided with a certain number of "holes" that permit functional corresponding connection. The pursued intent being optimal assembly.

The model, in its mathematical form, fits a standard Non-Linear M.P. (N.L.P.) problem, since the objective function Z is non-linear and the constraints are represented by inequalities. In its graphic form it reproduces an image of all the space units constituting the organism; moreover it is able to represent these units, in their logical and physical individuality, and their mutual relationship, as well as the ones with the external environment.

Both volumes together contain the 145 accepted papers that are also available digitally in CuminCAD (Cumulative Index of Computer Aided Architectural Design, http://cumincad.scix.net). The theme of the 33rd eCAADe conference is Real Time: Seeing architectural design as a time-critical and time-related activity requires new tools, methods and theories that deliver results not only accurately but also timely. As project cycles begin to accelerate, a variety of design decisions need to be taken swiftly and nevertheless accurately. Today's practice needs to explore the solution space through a rapid feedback loop between digital and physical products, used collaboratively and over a distance. To facilitate such a back-and-forth, geometries must be converted to manageable approximations on which intelligent tools can act, providing the designer with feedback and advice. This year's conference seeks to be a platform for research, teaching and practical work conducted in that spirit. The second volume of the proceedings contains 74 papers grouped under 15 sub-themes, which generally follow a more designernly and educational logic than the works in volume 1 (which follow a more formal approach). As additional part, we have our preceding workshop contributions, which are papers summarizing the workshops given.

summary There are numerous commercial digital asset management systems, but most of them are relatively expensive and meant for in-house management. In the meanwhile alternative solutions have been developed for searchable interactive repositories of media for professional use, education and research.

Web-based digital libraries and indexes of literature have been available on the internet for a few years now. In many cases a focus on specified areas is given and published information is disseminated in this way. However, researchers, educators and practitioners in architecture and civil engineering also depend on various sources of information that are stored and delivered in a multitude of media formats. Some of that information is case-based and built incrementally from previous experiences.

summary To researchers in many disciplines, Internet is quickly becoming the dominating environment to search for publications. Commercial bibliographic databases tend to be too general, are not up-to-date and require special skills and efforts to be searched. On the other hand research is also published on the Web that also enables collaborative creation ofreferences by the specialists in the field. CUMINCAD is such a bibliographic database and compiles papers related to Computer Aided (Architectural) Design. The database is available on the Web and allows searching and browsing in the ways usual on the Web. It provides a ”historical evolution” to learn from previous efforts and draws attention to older original works that could have been ignored because they could not be found on the Web. We believe that CUMINCAD will help focus future CAAD research andimprove the education.

summary This paper deals with the CUMINCAD-repository (Cumulative Index on CAD), which was set up in 1998 and has served the CAAD-community since then as an important source of archived domain related information. CUMINCAD contains over 5,000 entries in the form of publications in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design. The number has been growing steadily over the years. To date only advanced search mechanisms have been provided to access these works. This may work out well for a just-in-time location of a reference, but is inadequate for just in case browsing through the history of CAAD. For such applications, a hierarchical browsing interface, like one in Yahoo or DMOZ.org is envisioned. This paper describes how the keyword categories were defined and how a moderate, distributed effort in defining the categories will allow machine-identified classification of the entire data set. The aim of the paper is to contribute to building up a wide spread consensus on what the appropriate keyword categories in CAAD are, and what sub-topics should sit below the main keyword categories.

summary Collaborative Teamwork is regarded to be one of the most outstanding fields of teaching and research within the context of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning. This focal field is closely related to the research field of "Remote Teamwork", i.e. the substance-related cooperation of people over spatial distances in decision-situations aiming at the elaboration of suited remote-working structures for research, project transactions and teaching. summary Pro_tecture is a neologism made up of “protection” und “architecture”. Protecture thus stands for an architectonic instrumentation serving the protection of archeological finds required both on account of natural destruction and involvement of mankind endangering the present state of excavation. The immediate risk potential regarding excavated antiquity set the stage for thorough examination of protective architecture demonstrated at the excavation site “Ek Balam” (Yucatan, Mexico). Due to the prominent location in the middle of a tourist area and its both scientific and artistic importance a suited solution was to be developed making for means of protection as well as of adequate presentation of the design work. In the framework of this contribution the results of a corresponding design studio on “pro_tecture” in the context of “Ek Balam” will be presented.

summary This paper describes the developments of the CUMINCAD database since 1999 when it was first presented and some statistical information, how the service is being used. CUMINCAD started as a bibliographic database storing meta information about CAADrelated publications. Recently, full texts are being added. The process of creation of electronic copies of papers in pdf-format is described as well as decisions which were taken in this context. Over the last two years 20.000 users visited CUMINCAD. We present a brief analysis of their behavior and interaction patterns. This and the forthcoming possibility of a full-text-search will open up a new perspective for CAAD-research.

summary The scientific publication process has been so far only marginally affected by the possibilities of the Internet. This may be attributed to a lack of sound business models and pilots to demonstrate the ultimate benefits of free scientific publication. A team of universities, Internet publishers and applied research institutes proposes in the framework of the SciX-project (open, self-organizing repository for scientific information exchange) to demonstrate these benefits and reengineer parts of the scientific publication process. This contribution focuses on the findings from investigations into the identification and acquisition of content sources - such as conference papers, theses and journal papers - related to the field of CAAD. Special attention has been paid to the different types of available information, such as bibliographical data, summaries, full texts, etc. In this paper, an overall estimation concerning the expected scientific output in the field of CAAD (within a midterm perspective), and the dissemination of already fully digitally stored publications as well as procedures (with financial figures) for retrospective digitalization of paper-based publications will be presented. The workflow concerning digitalization and conversion was studied, as different levels of output are feasible.

Visualizing of no longer existent (architecture-) objects and their surroundings practically amounts to a “virtual comeback”. Furthermore, special attention is given to the description of the working procedure for a case study of reconstruction sounding out the potentials of QuickTime VR. The paper ends up with a set of conclusions, taking a close look at the “pros” and “cons” of this type of re-construction. 1 Introduction Irreversible destruction having removed identity-establishing buildings from the urban surface for all times is the principal cause for the attempt of renewed “imaginating.” When dealing with such reconstruction first the problem of reliability concerning the existing basic material has to be tackled. Due to their two-dimensional recording photographs only supply us with restricted information content of the object under consideration. Thus the missing part has to be supplemented or substituted by additional sources. Within the process of assembling and overlaying of differing data sets the way of dealing with such fragmentations becomes of major importance. Priority is given to the choice of information. One of the most elementary items of information regarding perception of three-dimensional objects surely is the effect that color and material furnishes. It seems to suggest itself that black-and-white shots hardly will prove valid in this respect. The three-dimensional object doubtlessly provides us with a by far greater variety of possibilities in the following working process than the “cardboard model with pasted-on facade photography”. Only the completely designed model structure makes for visualizing the plastic representation form of architecture in a sustainable manner. Furthermore, a virtual model can be dismantled into part models without amounting to a destruction process thereof. Apart therefrom the virtual model permits the generation of differing reconstruction variants regarding color and material. Moreover, architecture models of a physical nature are inherently connected to locality as such.

The following contribution is dedicated to the focal field of research and teaching "Remote Teamwork” of the Vienna University of Technology. This project is carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Spatial Interaction and Simulation (IRIS-ISIS), Vienna and the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC Linz-Hagenberg). Teaching experience relevant for "Remote Teamwork” is derived from various experiments of cooperative teamwork.
