summary The factors limiting the efficient delivery and presentation of multimedia material in the cellular environment are, among others, the low bandwidth of the transmission channel(s) and the modest capabilities of truly mobile terminals. The ACTS 1 project MObile Media and ENTertainment Services (MOMENTS) is leveraging the usage of state-of-the-art technique for the handling of vector graphics and animation contents, obtained through very low data transmission channels, in order to provide veru attractive multimedia services in that environment. This paper focuses on the achievements obtained within MOMENTS in regard to the handling of dynamic 2D/3D graphics for the projected wireless multimedia services.

summary Stringent requirements of efficiency and sustainability lead to the demand for buildings that have good performance regarding different criteria, such as cost, lighting, thermal, and structural, among others. Optimization can be used to ensure that such requirements are met. In order to optimize a design, it is necessary to generate different variations of the design, and to evaluate each variation regarding the intended criteria. Currently available design and evaluation tools often demand manual and time-consuming interventions, thus limiting design variations, and causing architects to completely avoid optimization or to postpone it to later stages of the design, when its benefits are diminished. To address these limitations, we propose Algorithmic Optimization, an algorithmic-based approach that combines an algorithmic description of building designs with automated simulation processes and with optimization processes. We test our approach on a daylighting optimization case study and we benchmark different optimization methods. Our results show that the proposed workflow allows to exclude manual interventions from the optimization process, thus enabling its automation. Moreover, the proposed workflow is able to support the architect in the choice of the optimization method, as it enables him to easily switch between different optimization methods.

summary This paper presents the results of a systematic review of 13 databases that aimed to identify which rapid prototyping techniques (RP) have been applied to development of tactile maps and tactile models. For this purpose were adopted the key words tactile map; tactile model; tactile scale model; additive manufacturing; digital fabrication; and rapid prototyping. Only 11 results deal with the PR in the manufacture of the devices. As a result of four cases reviewed, there are benefits from psychological and learning fields and also technical such as the resolution of the elements, its legibility and quality control in manufacturing.

summary This paper demonstrates a workflow converting terrestrial laser scan (TLS) data into an interactive virtual reality (VR) platform. A VR exhibition prototype of Lincoln Cathedral was created to validate the established workflow in terms of the technical and visual performance, usability, and functionality. It combined TLS data and storytelling to produce a shareable platform, inviting opportunities for public engagement, and to facilitate custodians with the tools to maintain the building’s heritage. The paper discusses the use of open sourcesoftware and suggests future work.

summary RAUMALP, an interdisciplinary research project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, shall examine problem areas of spatial development on community level in the Austrian alpine region. The aim is the investigation of scientific basics for political decision finding, especially for the regional-specific realisation of the Alpine Convention. All ascertained information shall be included in “GALPIS”, a comprehensive Alpine Space Information System. GALPIS based on ESRI ArcGIS and MS Access software works with data from different sources, like ISIS, the electronic data base of Statistic Austria, and original data and maps gathered and elaborated by the working groups of RAUMALP. This also includes ecological raster data. Dealing with administrative units, „real“ space and raster space, RAUMALP will integrate the different space levels mostly to administrative spatial units representing the existing 1145 communities of the RAUMALP study area. This will be realised by overlay of grids, types of land use and communitypolygons. Major task of GALPIS is a conversion of former communal data (p. e. 1451 communities in 1951) that should represent the recent administrative boundaries. By this way it is possible to make thematic and time-integrative analyses of community data. GIS modelling of the six case studies is more complex. The conceptual model has to integrate several vector and raster layers such as land plots (“Digitale Katastralmappe”), types of land use (“Land Use and Land Cover Austria” by M. Seger) and biodiversity. P. e., the working group settlement is using a logical data model based on the entity “building” with the attributes “construction”,“function”, etc.

summary The lack of urban planning has made the recreation areas increasingly smaller in the cities. Parks and squares gradually gave way to streets and avenues to try to accommodate the growing number of cars and motorcycles. An alternative that tries to balance recreation areas and urban roads was found in the city of San Francisco (USA). Parklets are temporary extensions of urban sidewalks that occupy a few parking spaces. This article aims to demonstrate the potential of parametric modeling in the development of parklets. Thus, anthropometric studies, amount of parking spaces and types of benches were used as input parameters. Rhinoceros and grasshopper programs were used for modeling, while 3D Studio Max was used for rendering. With this study it was possible to verify that when the project is parameterized the processes of creation and modification became faster, reducing design and implementation time.

For if I am not to be a dualist, positing a separate, a-spatial and a-temporal realm for thought and feeling, then what in the real world, I can easily ask, occupies neither space nor time? What is it that cannot be reduced, be analyzed, or be spoken of finally in the language of position, duration, connection, inclusion, transformation, and so forth? Nothing. summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary This paper presents the observations of a design studio for undergraduates that adopted a hands-on, experiential approach where students combined both digital modeling and full-scale construction in their design process. The studio was designed as team-based to encourage peer learning and collaboration in design. The students used multiple media and engaged in tactile experience and through the process discovered by themselves the issues of translating digital design into full-scale construction and achieved a better understanding of construction, scale and materiality.

title Artificial networks for spatial analysis

summary This paper tests digital representation techniques which can be used by artificial neural networks in a computer-aided design (CAD) environment to analyze and classify architectural spaces. We developed two techniques for encoding volumetric data: vertex representation and feature space representation, as input for artificial neural networks. We tested how two different kinds of artificial neural networks, perceptron networks and self-organizing maps, could recognize given shapes in these representational formats. We have found that a one-layer perceptron can be used to classify shapes even when presented with input vectors composed of real numbers. These spatial representation techniques provide a method for using ANNs for architectural purposes.

summary Prompted by an international competition, a multinational team developed a sustainable, affordable housing solution to be built in California. The Orange County Sustainability Decathlon proposed a platform to test the system's viability. The generative system created encompasses a design system, a structural strategy, and an infill/cladding process. The method chosen was a descriptive shape grammar, a system that uses a finite number of graphical rules, and parametric schemata to produce a family of solutions, based on an offsite volumetric pod. The grammar allows basic design rules each one targeted at the combination of adjacent spaces: a bathroom, a kitchen, an entrance space, a living area, a sleeping area and additional accommodation. The spatial variations allow for several parametric solutions. Once the spaces are associated, they are constructed using light structural framing systems. The experiment has proved to be operational and could be scaled up for commercial applications.

summary This paper describes the proposal and results of a multilingual shape grammar to describe the designs of three architects, precursors of the ‘International Style’. A shape grammar is a generative process that allows the recreation of designs that follow a language. Grammars are useful mechanisms to describe patterns and generative processes that can be used for analysis or design exploration. Most grammars represent one language. This study focuses on three independent languages within the same movement. The proposed grammar is parametric and allows the independent recreation of each independent design. Its difficult application can be linked to the difficult evaluation process. This research proposes a quantitative and a qualitative method of grammar evaluation, using respectively Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and user questionnaires. The results are then discussed and assessed using hybrids that fall in between languages and help delineate parametric spaces.

title ‘The International Style’ multilingual three-dimensional grammar and hybrid designs

summary The present paper describes a multilingual shape grammar to recreate the work of three designers that preconized the ‘International Style’. This is a top-down three-dimensional formulation. Whilst most grammars are monolingual and univocal, this work creates a multilingual formulation within the same artistic movement. Typically, a grammar describes a family of design solutions. These are helpful mechanisms to describe patterns that can be used for analysis or design exploration. This multilingual three-dimensional parametric grammar allows the independent recreation of original designs from three designers and hybrid solutions. Shape grammar’s difficult application can be linked to its evaluation process. The original contribution of the study lies in the use of quantitative and qualitative methods for grammar evaluation, using Principal Components Analysis and user questionnaires. The PCA provides a pragmatic analysis, and the questionnaires an intuitive reading. Together they corroborate the results which are discussed using hybrids that assist in delineating parametric spaces

summary This paper describes a shape grammar that recreates Palladio’s villas. A Palladian grammar was previously proposed by Stiny and Mitchell. However, this alternative grammar uses different parametric shape rules and methodology to test the hypothesis that different grammars can generate the same corpus of designs. The formalism is then implemented using a computerised design tool. The grammar includes subdivision rules that allow for a more economical formulation. The project is part of wider research aimed at formulating a generic housing grammar.

summary The following paper describes the process and results achieved with the workshop entitled ‘Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles’ reflecting on design methodology and design teaching. Workshop participants were invited to rethink ceramic tile patterns developing a different process which used shape grammars as a generative system. Each participant group developed a three stage task using shape grammars principles and methodology. The preliminary results the work developed are of particular relevance in shape grammar research: firstly shape grammar formulae does not constitute an intuitive process to most creative designers which are often trained to design singular solutions for a specific problem, secondly more than one operative shape grammar can be formulated to represent the same corpus of solutions and lastly the generative potential of grammars transcends the normal capacities of the original grammarist aiding in design exploration and enlarging the corpus of feasible solutions. This paper also reflects on the impact of shape grammars as a design methodology.

summary This paper describes a system for generating customized mass housing. The aim is to provide dwellings at an affordable cost with recourse to mass production and yet guarantee that they are tailored to their users. It combines two systems, a rule-based design system and a prefabricated building system. The integration of both systems is achieved through the development of a computer tool to assist designers in the various stages of the housing design process. This tool produces three kinds of outputs: three dimensional models, construction drawings, and a list of construction elements, including their cost and information for manufacturing.

summary Determining whether a given point lies inside or outside a simple polygon is an important problem in many applications, including computer vision systems and computer-assisted political redistricting systems. In this paper the authors give algorithms for inclusion problems that are efficient for polygons that are 'close to convex' in a certain precise sense. An empirical study of polygons that arise in several applications shows that typical polygons are indeed 'close to convex,' and a program implementing the algorithm shows that is extremely efficient on point sets of practical sizes
