summary Manah is an abandoned oasis settlement in Oman. During what is termed the “Golden period” in the region’s cultural development the settlement became on of the most important cultural centres of the interior. For a long period Manah stood as the seat of learning in sciences and arts. A current project is underway to establish, as far as possible, how the settlement evolved; how tribal, cultural, religious and social factors impinged on Manah as it grew over the years. The work described here is directed as applying computational methods to augment the analysis and critical review of that evolution. We are aiming to explain the evolutionary process using computer mediated techniques, working backwards from the current state, to the inception of the settlement; hence the term Digital Hindcasting.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2004.167
source Architecture in the Network Society [22nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-2-4] Copenhagen (Denmark) 15-18 September 2004, pp. 167-172
summary In previous papers the authors have described low cost, pragmatic interaction devices for architectural virtual environments, in particular the bike as a means of locomotion around a virtual urban environment. They have also been involved in work on portable systems for city navigation and representation, based around a personal digital assistant running pseudo 3d models of the city with an associated information database. This paper describes work that develops the two ideas of familiar real world interaction device and portability to produce a portable system for interaction with architectural urban models.

source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 247-250
summary This paper looks at the background to the development of alternative interfaces to Virtual Environments and suggests a reappraisal of some of the early work which allowed a sense of presence in the ‚real’ world. Initial work, the virtual exercise bike, is appraised, and new work is described which further develops the development of a low-cost interface system. Work in progress is described which is a combination of hard- and software. The solution described is a ‚hands free’ interface enabling the user to experience a VE in a similar manner to a physical environment, using movements of the head and feet for navigation. Whilst this is possible using expensive, proprietary equipment, the presented solution concentrates on a low cost approach. In line with this, the system uses a low cost gaming environment which is described and evaluated.

title Transformations of Languages of Designs
source University of California, Graduate School of Architecture and Urban PIanning, Los Angeles
summary Stylistic change and innovation is a central and traditional issue in art and architecture. In this study, a formal model is developed for representing stylistic change. Styles are defined in terms of rule-based systems called shape grammars that generate languages of designs. Changes in styles are represented as transformations of the shape grammars that define these styles. The model is first sketched informally and considered in relation to other, traditional approaches to style and change. It is then presented in detail and illustrated with numerous simple examples. Last, the model is applied to describe actual, historical examples of stylistic transformations: one in the decorative arts, one in the fine arts, and one in architecture.

title A PROCISSÃO" - Documentação Tridimensional de Arte Rupestre na Chapada Diamantina, Bahia ["THE PROCESSION" - Three-dimensional documentation of Rock Art in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Documentation of rock art is generally made by drawing with a marker over a plastic film overlaid to the wall of the canyon or cave where it is found. Taking out the drawing printed in the film from the wall implies in loosing important data about its contour because the image became rectified; information about the relief of the documented figure are lost as well. We have used close range photogrammetry methodology to overcome this problem and, on the other hand, to preserve information about the relief of the picture itself, taking into account the fragility of the rock support.

summary This paper outlines the work and organizational framework of World16, a working group of 16 professors from around the world that engage in collaborative research on virtual reality (VR) technologies. Because of the abundance of VR software and the resulting fragmentation of research efforts in this field, World16 shares knowledge and resources using a common software package. A common research platform facilitates the sharing of data and the coordination of research efforts among member professors spread around the world. In addition to the organizational practices of World16’s project management team, various tools and methods of sharing research are described. Additionally, World16’s major research projects are outlined as well as the successes and failures of working within a shared software platform. Lastly, future work and goals of World16 are discussed, including the marketing and commercialization of several computational tools created by member professors.

title Pixel-Based Geometric Decoding of Mondrian Compositions
source Gomez, P and Braida, F (eds.), Designing Possibilities - Proceedings of the XXV International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2021), Online, 8 - 12 November 2021, pp. 103–114
summary This study explores the use of a computational method for decoding and encoding an art composition in the digital environment. Geometric decoding includes subdivision through color and shape. Five artworks of Mondrian, which contain simple but intense geometric data and have a unique composition style, are discussed in this context. Matrix-based expression of composition in terms of color and form with a code-based analysis allowed to definition of a control mechanism for existing geometric data. The aim of this decoding process, which follows segmentation and fragmentation methods, is to capture the common composition approach and particular comparison approach. Visual encoding, as the reverse of the decoding process, is the interpretation of the data obtained as a result of the analysis by assigning a color map. By this meanings, the matrixes and visual outputs enable the artworks to be compared according to the main composition style, or the similarities between them.

title One Mill per Student: Designing a low cost prototype mill for architectural use
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2010.429
source FUTURE CITIES [28th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-9-6] ETH Zurich (Switzerland) 15-18 September 2010, pp.429-436
summary The linking of planning and production is today of crucial importance in architectural planning processes. Though the teaching of techniques and methods of rapid prototyping in universities is not up to date, since the needed machinery is too expensive and the students’ direct and perpetual access to a sufficient number of systems cannot be granted. This paper describes a teaching project where architectural students tried to plan, build and test a 3-axes mill for themselves and their fellow students. It further describes the motivation and realization of the class and the possibility to integrate self-made and low cost milling machines in the education of architecture students.

title Development of the automatic system for pneumatic caisson
source Automation in Construction 6 (3) (1997) pp. 241-255
summary The pneumatic caisson method (NPC) is applicable in any type of ground and permits the ground being excavated to be observed directly, hence it provides a reliable foundation. However, since the working chamber is put under high pressure, high temperature, and high humidity, this method requires robust, experienced workers. However, the aging of skilled workers and the shortage of younger workers have become a social problem in recent years. This is especially serious in foundation work using the pneumatic caisson method which involves hard work under high pressure. In view of the above situation, the Ministry of Construction conducted a joint research with several private companies on technology for automatically removing excavated materials in the pneumatic caisson method as part of its comprehensive technical development project and has come up with a new pneumatic caisson method.
