summary The authors have developed a basic, interactive, primitive-instancing 3-D modeling system (CAADF), which is based on a high-speed 3-D color graphic workstation, and have tested its potential ability to support spatial design studies in an architectural design studio. After- a review of work performed by a student with the system, this paper concludes that this system provides an attractive environment for spatial design studies which conventional CAD systems have not achieved. The interactive process of 3-D modeling in perspective or isometric view images and the dynamic viewing utility are the most successful features of the system. In contrast to those advantages, the resolution of color graphic display is a limitation of the system. The authors conclude that if sufficiently many appropriate 3-D geometric primitives are supported by a CAD system, a primitive instancing method can significantly reduce the work entailed in object modeling.

summary Using computational tools for evaluating spatial layouts of commercial exhibitions provides an opportunity for assessment of performance before execution. However, most evaluation techniques take into consideration only the physical qualities of the built environment, excluding important factors such as crowds. Crowds are essentially dynamic obstacles that hinder visibility and can induce flight response, but they are also a sign of good exposure when in reasonable amounts. This is mostly due to the challenge of quantifying spatial qualities such as users’ interaction and movement for computational representations. This paper proposes a framework using agent-based modeling for simulating user interaction in commercial exhibition spaces combined with a parametric representation of the built environment. The framework is then evaluated by applying it to a case-study of three layout scenarios in a generic exhibition hall. The simulation results show that layouts with vertical aisles, and less horizontal aisles have better footfall distribution.

summary In a reciprocal frame structure, at any given joint, there are only two members connecting to each other. Therefore, the joints in a standard reciprocal structure are topologically identical. Due to these topological similarities between the joints, the parametric modeling of a reciprocal frame structure applied to a geometrically regular surface, such as domes and symmetric shells, is practical, and it has been explored in several projects previously. In this context, this paper presents an integrated computational design to robotic production process of a free form wooden pavilion with a non-uniform tessellation pattern with differentiated cell sizes. The case study, on the one hand, elaborates on the challenges of solving reciprocal tessellation on complex geometries, and on the other hand, discusses the chosen and developed robotic production approach as a feedback loop that informs the design process.

summary With the consolidation of digital media, we have seen the expansion of documentation and design modes. Two-dimensional representation was the main mean of communication in projects, however, in a process whose design of the form presents complexity, are no longer considered as adequate solutions. The parametric documentation of the vernacular knowledge of Icapuí boat production carries with it part of the immateriality of the step-by-step of a traditional process, resulting in the description of the complexity of the boat shapes. This article tries to affirm the power of the digital processes for the maintenance of the memory.

title Simulating the Use of Ancient Technology Works Using Advanced Virtual Reality Technologies

summary This paper introduces a novel framework for the modeling and interactive simulation of ancient Greek technology works with the use of advanced virtual reality technologies. A novel algorithm is introduced for the realistic and efficient resolution of collisions that is based on an advanced collision detection approach that can also calculate in real-time the force that should be fed back to the user using a haptic device. Thus, the user is capable of manipulating the scene objects in the environment using haptic devices to simulate the sense of touch and stereoscopic imaging so as to be immersed in the virtual environment. Moreover, the virtual hand that simulates the user's hand is modeled using superquadrics so as to further increase the speed of the simulation and the fidelity of the force feedback. Extended evaluation of the system has been performed with visitors of the Science Center and Technology Museum of Thessaloniki.

summary The paper details computational mapping and modeling techniques from an ongoing design research project titled Irradiated Shade, which endeavors to develop and calibrate a computational toolset to uncover, represent, and design for the unseen dangers of ultraviolet radiation, a growing yet underexplored threat to cities, buildings, and the bodies that inhabit them. While increased shade in public spaces has been advocated as a strategy for “mitigation [of] climate change” (Kapelos and Patterson 2014), it is not a panacea to the threat. Even in apparent shade, the body is still exposed to harmful, ambient, or “scattered” UVB radiation. The study region is a binational metroplex, a territory in which significant atmospheric pollution and the effects of climate change (reduced cloud cover and more “still days” of stagnant air) amplify the “scatter” of ultraviolet wavelengths and UV exposure within shade, which exacerbates urban conditions of shade as an “index of inequality” (Bloch 2019) and threatens public health. Exposure to indirect radiation correlates to the amount of sky visible from the position of an observer (Gies and Mackay 2004). The overall size of a shade structure, as well as the design of openings along its sides, can greatly impact the UV protection factor (UPF) (Turnbull and Parisi 2005). Shade, therefore, is more complex than ubiquitous urban and architectural “sun” and “shadow studies” are capable of representing, as such analyses flatten the three-dimensional nature of radiation exposure and are “blind” to the ultraviolet spectrum. “Safe shade” is contingent on the nuances of the surrounding built environment, and designers must be empowered to observe and respond to a wider context than current representational tools allow.

summary This paper reports about a design process as a case study illustrating different levels of learning that seem required for successful computational design. The learning process occurred during a two-day workshop about parametric design with integrated analysis and multi-objective optimization. First, the design team needs to understand the behavior of the model in order to validate that the model behaves in a way that actually conforms with the project goals; second, the design team needs to learn about potential trade- offs between different project goals, and thus understand the decisions that need to be made, or the additional problems that need to be solved in order to arrive at a better design solution.

summary This paper integrates traditional techniques with the parametric approach in ceramic fabrication by outlining several key parameters in both the traditional and digital ceramic fabrication process, and investigating how these parameters can accommodate parametric variation from the digital model. Findings from three experiments with different parameters suggest a promising landscape for traditional ceramic fabrication to be more compatible, not only with the parametric variation in digital modeling, but also with customized digital fabrication.

summary This research aims to develop a three-dimensional representation method for complex environmental systems based on the environmental impacts derived from actions or interactions amongst the elements of the studied systems and associated systems. It is a method for representing matrices in networks which contemplates the simulation of causes and effects and the visualization of interdependence links amongst the subsystems making them up and also amongst adjacent systems. The methodology includes the observation and study of an environmental system with the consequent formulation of a networked matrix and, finally, its modeling through a three-dimensional software. Both the elements and the interactions are represented as three-dimensional items with a shape, color, and size of their own. The practical result is a three-dimensional animation in which all the elements of the environmental system and their connections are represented.

summary Investigating productivity in the design process by comparing physical and virtual reality modeling constitutes the problem defined by the study, since both mediums grant the interaction between the body and design object. The study, it is aimed to decode the productivity of the early design stages. The study uses the Linkography method and protocol analysis with the think-aloud method for the quantitative measurement and analysis of productivity. In the protocol analysis, the participants, all of them architects, were expected to propose a solution for the architectural design problem, first with a physical model and then with a virtual reality environment, three days apart. The results of the study show that the productivity results in the physical model are higher than the results in the virtual reality modeling. The differences suggest that the medium used in the design processes has a direct impact on the design process and productivity.

summary Reasoning is influenced by our perception of the environment. New aspects of our environment help to provoke new thoughts. Thus, changes of what is perceived can be assumed to stimulate the generation of new ideas, as well. In CAD, computerized three-dimensional models of physical entities are produced. Their representation on the monitor is determined by our viewing position and by the rendering method used. Especially the wire-frame representations of views lend themselves to a variety of readings, due to coincident and intersecting lines. Methods by which wire-frame views can be processed to extract the shapes that they contain have been investigated and developed. The extracted shapes can be used as a base for the generation of derived entities through various operations that are called Reinterpretation Operations. They have been implemented as a prototypical extension (named Reint-Ops) to an existing modeling shell. ReintOps is a highly interactive exploratory CAD tool, which allows the user to customize criteria and factors which are used in the reinterpretation process. This tool can be regarded as having a potential to support conceptual design investigations.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

summary The objective of this research is to help designers working in teams by providing an improved collaborative design environment. The focus is on the investigation into specific issues and requirements for the development of multi-user CAD systems for collaborative 3-D modeling. By examining means for incorporating shared design workspace into conventional design workspace, we propose new mechanisms to transform existing CAD tools into collaboration-aware systems. From an initial experimental study of the team design process and a series of prototype development of collaborative CAD systems, a theoretical framework has been proposed and applied to the new collaboration-aware design systems. The result of the research will lead to the new generation of design tools to support team design tasks improving efficiency and effectiveness of team working.

summary This paper describes the design and testing of a mobile sensing kit for real-timeurban site analysis. It aims to contribute to a discussion on the importance ofsensing-based mapping of urban phenomena following our assertion that current delivery of urban analysis methodologies, with their emphasis on visuo-spatialanalysis only, fail to create maps that reflect the nuanced and layered interrelationships between the people and the physical environmental space they live in. In essence, the paper will bring to light the set up components and deployment of a mobile sensing kit that allows for usually mapped static invisible data (air quality, temperature, humidity) to be mapped as visible data. In other words, we want to explore how real-time geo-referenced data collection can enhance traditional data mapping and visualization methods enabling designers to understand better the urban space.

summary Recently, there are significant developments in artificial intelligence using advanced machine learning algorithms such as deep neural networks. These new methods can defeat human expert players in strategy-based board games such as Go and video games such as Breakout. This paper suggests a way to incorporate such advanced computing methods into architectural design through introducing a simple conceptual design project inspired by computational interpretations of wasps' collective constructions. At this stage, the paper's intent is not to introduce a practical and fully finished tool directly useful for architectural design. Instead, the paper proposes an example of a program that can potentially become a conceptual framework for incorporating such advanced methods into architectural design.
