summary This article presents a study that addresses the importance of indoor air quality. The research aimed to understand how the use of specific plants can enhance air quality in work environments. The methodology involves a prototype with two sensors to measure CO2 concentration in a space without natural and mechanical ventilation, considering the use of plants for air purification. The results demonstrate the variation in CO2 levels with and without the presence of plants and occupants. While a reduction in CO2 levels was observed with the use of plants, under high occupancy, the vegetation wasn't sufficient to maintain recommended levels. The conclusion emphasizes the need for sensor calibration, as well as the proportional relationship between CO2 accumulation in the environment and the quantity of plants required to uphold air quality.

summary In a simple communication model we must talk about the understanding between participants. This is the result of a continuing connection and a dialog of agreements and disagreements in order to arrive at sharing an idea. However, society today is in an evolutionary lapse at an accelerated pace that interjects itself in this process. It is here where social forces distend and generate important ruptures between generations and individuals that fight to prevail or impose new languages and lifestyles. Today's society has become a visual society whose effect has been reinforced through technology in the devices that we use on a daily basis. The daily use of technology and its new languages has marked a disconnection between individuals that must be closed by using a new acculturation and teaching models. Disconnection is a omnipresent modern phenomenon that can be felt as the main effect in what specialists call the digital gap. This gap not only separates generations, but also ideologies with respect to the form in which we perceive, transmit and teach in our society today. This disconnection can be easily understood through a school system that has been designed for a manufacturing and agricultural world. However, many sectors within our society have been in state of constant change and evolution. This situation generates many opportunities where an agile society is required in response to these new local and global challenges. The students of today have, for example, multi-tasking abilities that better assimilate these changes. The researchers, Ian Jukes and Anita Dosaj refer to this disconnection as the result of poor communication between digital natives (our present-day students) and digital immigrants (many present-day adults). This phenomenon results in the fact that parents and educators speak the digital dialect as a second language, and because of that are lacking in their models of communication. For example, digital natives prefer a variety of sources with rapid access, while the digital immigrants prefer slower, more controlled sources that are limited and regulated. Nowadays, our educational or production activities in which we find ourselves immersed on a daily basis cause us to participate in a wide range of processes of production, dissemination and analysis of visual forms as part of our final product or service. Much of the work that we elaborate in movies, video and photography explore meaning, perception and communication in context as well as anthropological and ethnographic themes. Using this framework for our society today, the importance of the search for the promotion of the study of visual representation and the media for the greatest development and generation of benefits is brought to the fore. Through the use of images we can describe, analyze, communicate and interpret human behavior. All these settings, full of digital disconnections and reencounters, impact on all the visual aspects of culture, including art, architecture and material objects, influencing the bodily expressions of human beings. We have created a visual society when we put emphasis on the meaning and interpretation of all we receive through our visual sense. Wherever we look, we find objects that have been modified beyond their primary function to communicate messages. In this ecosystem we are consumers and suppliers. The communication and research needed to achieve reconnection, as well as the creation of new forms of production and visual understanding, are the themes on which the works contained in this edition are centered.

summary In contrast to reductionist investigating of interrelation between emotion and architecture, we have proposed a new concept for creating an adaptive architecture system that employs biosensors and virtual reality (VR). We have generated a dynamic audio-visual Virtual Environment (VE) that has the potential of manipulating the emotional arousal level of the users measured via electrodermal activity (EDA) of skin. Much like the second-order cybernetics system, our simulations have actuators, sensors, and an adaptation mechanism, whereby participant's real-time biofeedback is interpreted and loops back into the simulation to moderate the user experience. The results of our preliminary test show that our system is capable of manipulating the emotional arousal level of the participants by using its dynamic VE.

It is seen thattransformation of the image through neuronalprocessing yields (i) more evenly balanced levels ofluminosity and (ii) a more ‘subjective’ rendering of theenvironment than what was photographed with thedigital camera.The CCD (charge coupled device) –based digital camera reveals its limitation as a linearrecording device that does not have a balanceddynamic range.The neuronal processing of the imageadds non-linearity and a balanced range to theluminosity levels in the image, rendering it closer to a‘subjective’ perception of the scene.

title Curved surface form-finding with self-shaping perforated plates

summary Self-shaping systems offer a promising approach for making complex 3D geometries from the material-driven transformation of 2D sheets. However, current research development of such systems is focused on small-scale applications. This study proposes a self-shaping composite for generation of larger-scale curved surfaces suitable for spatial structures. The composite arises from the novel combination of a perforated plate passive layer and a heat-shrinkable active layer. Experimental investigations are undertaken to assess the influence of perforation parameters of the passive layer over the degree of curvature generated in the self-shaping composite system. A 3D scanner and parametric curvature evaluation tool were used to extract and analyse the fabricated surface curvatures. Three key deformation characteristics were identified: the generated surface is cylindrical with dominant curvature in the x-direction; curvature is approximately uniform across the surface width and length; and curvature is strongly influenced by perforation bridge and strap length parameters. Results of this study support the application of self-shaping curved surfaces for customizable discrete structure parts.

title Generative Polymodal Music Process

summary We present underlying ideas used to develop an Algorithmic Composition software named KYKLOS. It was designed to generate music based on generalised musical scales and modes. It is an interactive sonic device to be applied in composition as well in performance. The sonic output of the whole process can be described as generalised polymodal music since “synthetic scales” are generated by the algorithm. This environment can be used in a Computer Assisted Composition manner in order to generate MIDI files. On the other hand, it can equally be used as a performance environment in which a dynamic change of parameters enables a real time control of the sonic process. Recently, we advocated that several mathematical applications in Computer Music can be understood as Sound Functors [1]. In extension, we describe here a sound functor used to model scales and modes. As can be verified, part of early investigations on mathematical structures in music studied musical scales and modes using Combinatorics, Fibonacci Series and Golden Mean in order to understand compositional processes which use modal concepts. Using the Functor definition it is possible to enumerate n-scales as a sequence of integers. Each value in that sequence gives the distance (in half tones) between two consecutive tones. For example, the sequence 3:2:2:3 is interpreted as a pentatonic scale C-Eb-F-G-Bb, and as defined above it is a C mode. So, if we apply cyclical permutations, (n-1)-sequences of numbers should be interpreted as n-modes of tones. Our algorithmic implementation is described briefly. A n-mode is defined as an array with n-1 integers [a1, a2, ...an-1]. Each array generated at k-th step can be read as a number a1a2a3 ....an-1 in decimal representation, where ai is a integer between 1 and 9. We denote the number obtained at k-th step as (a1a2a3 ...an-1)(k) . summary Technological innovations such as 5G connectivity, the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 'Big Data' have fostered the development of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) projects. It should be noted, however, that intelligence does not lie in the use of technological innovations, but in innovative urban planning practices that are developed in an environment of political intelligence. This finding is the result of a comparative study of urban transportation policies in the face of technological innovations between Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Zurich (Switzerland) and Wuhan (China). It uses 28 indicators divided into 6 Intelligence Areas based on smart cities rankings, empirical studies and related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of the analysis is to contribute to the improvement of urban transport services by guiding innovation and intelligence in urban transport policy.

summary From a critical point of view regarding Smart Cities, this paper presents an overview of Brazilian policies concerning the application of Internet of Things (IoT) on public transportation systems, using as a case study the city of Belo Horizonte. We performed a critical analysis of its public transportation system considering the already installed IoT infrastructure, including mobile communication technology that uses distributed locative media among users. Our main focus was understanding its use, potential and political dimension, specially concerning terms of use and data distribution and sharing between users, public administration and private companies that compose the transportation system.

Experiencing the advantages of Internet technologies is crucial in order to avoid negative perceptions.

summary This article explores the patriarchal and classical influences on architectural production, resulting in spaces that perpetuate social inequalities and exclude marginalized identities. Drawing from the experience of the Matrix Co-operative of female architects, which aimed at inclusivity and transformation of built environments for women, and the cyberfeminist group VNS Matrix, which harnessed digital technologies to create spaces of free expression, this study draws parallels between both movements. Despite being separated by decades and continents, both groups share a commitment to promoting social change and dismantling oppressions of gender, race, sexuality, and class in physical and virtual spaces.

summary Composition and performance of Computer Music still keep some of the features of traditional music, together with new ones. Rhythm, melody, harmony can still be present in new paradigms (even if they are not necessarily required when dealing with computer music), but new compositional parameters are coming to light, causing the term «music» not always to be appropriate to describe new phenomena of sonic art. This paper will show some new paradigms of this kind of sonic art, as well as different view of old ones. Any past dogmas should be wiped out when dealing with digital arts. The rebellion against tonality of the first half of 20th century is surpassed now, and I believe that new music could use harmonic intervals without generating conflicts with the ideological problems which arose at that time (even if there are still many people who don’t admit it). Actually, digital domain opens a huge amount of unexplored worlds, making any past ideological dogma a prison we should free ourselves from. Nowadays, making music has many things in common with visual arts and scientific research. Many musical parameters can be applied to video arts, architecture, and vice-versa. Structure of sound has a lot of similarities with many other physical phenomena such as inner atomic structure, particle physics, astronomy, biology etc. This paper will deal with new uses and interpretations of old musical parameters (rhythm, harmony, melody) together with a presentation of some of the new ones. Debated topics are: ? Harmonic/inharmonic sounds, rhythm and melodies. The Deep Harmony (the harmony of spheres or cosmic harmony CYCLES). ? The inner structure and evolution of a single sound ? Interpretative music: Music generated by exploration of soundscapes or sonic architectures, generative processes constrained by interpreter’s gestures, state transitions between musical structures. ? Generative music: stocastic generation, algorithmic composition, levels of action. ? Music or non-music this is the problem (a terminology problem) ? Hyper-spatial music, virtual times, hyper-times. Time travels by means of sonic matter. ? Visual music. Generating 3D video by means of musical processes.

title Generating digital music with DirectCsound & VMCI

summary This paper concerns two computer-music programs: DirectCsound, a real-time version of the well-known sound-synthesis language Csound, and VMCI, a GUI program that allow the user to control DirectCsound in real-time. DirectCsound allows a total live control of the synthesis process. The aim of DirectCsound project is to give the user a powerful and low-cost workstation in order to produce new sounds and new music interactively, and to make live performances with the computer. Try to imagine DirectCsound being a universal musical instrument. VMCI (Virtual Midi Control Interface) is a program which allows to send any kind of MIDI message by means of the mouse and the alpha-numeric keyboard. It has been thought to be used together with DirectCsound, but it can also be used to control any MIDI instrument. It provides several panels with virtual sliders, virtual joysticks and virtual-piano keyboard. The newer version of the program (VMCI Plus 2.0) allows the user to change more than one parameter at the same time by means of the new Hyper-Vectorial-Synthesis control. VMCI supports seven-bit data as well as higher-resolution fourteen-bit data, all supported by the newest versions of Csound.

title Reinterpreting Rasmi Domes with Geometric Constraints:A Case of Goal-seeking in Parametric Systems

summary Geometry has long been a generator of architecture. In traditional Persian architecture, Rasmi domes project a drawing onto a predefined 3D geometry. In fact, the word 'rasmi' and the verb for drawing in Persian have the same linguistic root. Projection is readily done in manual drawings or conventional CAD programs. From a constraint perspective, the dome is constrained by the drawing and the 3D geometry. If the latter constraint is replaced by invariance of distance on the original drawing, a class of domes results, but members of this class cannot be computed conventionally. Class members are developable from a planar layout of triangles, which is, in turn, generated by a simple drawing rule. This yields a parametric structure of four parameters. Three determine the initial planar diagram. One determines configuration. Further, domes in the class are mechanisms: they are not fully specified by the constraints and parameters. We develop the geometric constraints representing the location of the defining points of a dome and present a goal-seeking algorithm to solve the constraints within a propagation-based parametric modeling system.

title Interfacing with the real space and its performance

summary This paper presents an immersive gesture-recognition-based system to visualize the indoor thermal environment using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). To enable efficient visualization of CFD in actual space, an Augmented Reality system was integrated with a CFD simulation engine. To facilitate efficient data manipulation of the simulated postprocessed CFD data and to increase user control of the immersive environment, an intuitive method of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has been incorporated using gesture and speech recognition. While gesture recognition aids in transforming hand postures into command functions through forward kinematics and computation of hand segment positions and their joint angles, speech recognition allows better control of the data manipulation. This enabled real-time interactions between the users and simulated CFD results in actual space.

title Navigation and acquisition of spatial knowledge in a virtual maze

summary Spatial behavior in humans and animals includes a wide variety of behavioral competences and makes use of a large number of sensory cues. Here we studied the ability of human subjects to search locations, to find shortcuts and novel paths, to estimate distances between remembered places, and to draw sketch maps of the explored environment; these competences are related to goal-independent memory of space, or cognitive maps. Information on spatial relations was restricted to two types: a visual motion sequence generated by simulated movements in a virtual maze and the subject's own movement decisions defining the path through the maze. Visual information was local (i.e., no global landmarks or compass information was provided). Other position and movement information (vestibular or proprioceptive) was excluded. The amount of visual information provided was varied over four experimental conditions. The results indicate that human subjects are able to learn a virtual maze from sequences of local views and movements. The information acquired is local, consisting of recognized positions and movement decisions associated to them. Although simple associations of this type can be shown to be present in some subjects, more complete configurational knowledge is acquired as well. The results are discussed in a view-based framework of navigation and the representation of spatial knowledge by means of a view graph.

The analysis focused on three aspects: the morphological aspect, which comprises the visualization and the analysis of the model shapes; the constructional aspect, which deals with the component elements of the model ; and the realistic aspect, where shapes are complemented with appearence by incorporating materialization features which relate to the perception of the finished model.
