summary This paper presents an evolutionary algorithm that draws its power from the literal interpretation of the natural system’s reproductive process at a microscopic scale with the scope of generating optimal Delaunay triangulated space frames for dynamic loads. The algorithm repositions a firm number of nodes within a space envelope, by establishing Delaunay tetrahedra and, consequently, creating adaptable optimised space frame topologies. The arbitrarily generated tetrahedralised structure is compared against a canonical designed one and the results of this comparison indicate that the method proposed has advantageous properties and is capable of generating an optimum structure that exceeds statically the performance of an engineered tetrahedralised space frame.

summary Under the assumption that design is a hypothetical test of building, this paper introduces a method of employing architectural knowledge through direct manipulation of geometric objects. Proposing a framework for retrieving and analysing not only what is modelled but also how it is designed, this paper demonstrates that designing can be viewed as an object of research. The paper also discusses the issues pertaining to the implementation of the aforementioned framework.

summary Architects take advantage of a broad palette of tools and media for design, analog and digital, because each tool has its own strengths and weaknesses and provides an additional value—an added level of vision—to the architect. This closely relates to the notion of Critical Points for Change (CPC) a contribution this study makes towards a better understanding of the uniqueness of the conceptual design process. CPC are crucial moments when the architect suddenly becomes able to “see” something which drives him to go back and either alter his idea and refine it or reject it and pursue a new one. They are crucial parts of the design process because they are a vital mechanism for enhancing design. The right choice and smooth combination of design tools, analog and digital, is critical for the design outcome. Using multiple tools allows the designer to overcome the possible influences and limitations imposed by a single tool. The current and evolving landscape is illustrated by coexistence, complementing and evolution of tools. The answer to the pseudo-dilemma of analog or digital is both.

title Parametrizing Indian Karnata-Dravida Temple Using Geometry

summary The Karnata-Dravida temple tradition flourished and evolved for 700 years. The evolution of the typology was demonstrated through the structure. However, as the Shastras or ancient texts proclaim, the underlying principles of geometry remain unchanged. Geometry and the unchanging principles of construction made the architects experiment with form, material and ornamentation. Geometry does not only mean shapes or two dimensional diagrams but it is a rule to amalgamate all the elements to form a dynamic form of a temple. The paper validates the use of geometry through an evolving sequence of Karnata-Dravida temples with the help of an analytical model created using the grasshopper software. The components of the model are based on the geometric rule (the basis for parametrizing) and parameters of the algorithm – plan forms, organizational compositions, vimana or superstructure composition – which result in a geometry. Even though building science is an old tradition, the use of computational procedures reveals the predictable nature of temples in the Dravidian clan and enables the analysis of existing temples, development of new possibilities or evolution of interpreted forms. Hence, enriching the existing understandings of previous scholarships in the field of temple architecture with an entirely new system of interpretation. In the age of technology where analytics plays a crucial role in almost all sectors, ancient temple architecture in India unfortunately falls behind when it comes to computational methods of restoration or reconstruction. This research questions the applicability of computational technology as a facilitator in preserving or reconstructing existing temples while maintaining its creative liberty.

title A creative form-finding tool: Deformation of plastic sheets due to the influence of temperature and gravity

summary A form-finding technique based on the deformation of plastic sheets by the action of gravity and temperature increase is proposed, allowing the exploration of complex geometries to support form-giving processes within architecture projects, both by students and practitioners. Using an analog and computational approach, the ideal material for the technique was selected from a multifactorial experiment. Semi-structured analog experimentation was carried out based on inputs, rules, and outputs previously identified, and the resulting models were morphologically analyzed, to later translate the components of the analog experimentation into a computational algorithm to carry out computational experimentation. The technique can be used as a generator of novel forms possessing adequate transformational qualities. Finally, potential applications of the technique and avenues for future research are presented

summary Beauty as the manifestation of aesthetic responses and valuations is a human universal. All societies operate with (a version of) the category of beauty. We all navigate the world aesthetically. Architecture and the design disciplines together shape the outward appearance of the social world. Therefore, beauty as the engaged response to appearances should be an indispensable category of all design discourses, including architectural discourse. However, beauty is an increasingly embattled and by now nearly extinct category within a conscientious architectural discourse that is rightly aspiring to rational accountability and evidence-based propositions. Beauty has been eliminated from the discipline’s discourse because it is seen as subjective and irrational, as an irresponsible diversion or distraction from architecture’s societal tasks. However, beauty is clearly not being abandoned by the end-users of design. Nor are aesthetic choices absent from actual contemporary design practice. Beauty is just no longer being explicitly referred to.

summary The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is pronounced in dense urban developments, and particular an issue in the case study city of Parramatta, where temperature increases are impacting use of public space, health, and economic productivity. To mitigate against elevated temperatures in built up areas, this research explores the optimisation of paving material layouts through using an evolutionary algorithm. High albedo (reflective) materials are objectively cooler than low albedo (absorbent) materials yet tend to be more expensive. To reduce the amount of heat absorbent pavement materials whilst keeping in mind material costs, a range of materials of different albedo levels (reflectivity) can be assigned on the same path using an evolutionary algorithm to optimise the coolest materials for the cheapest price. Over the course of this paper, this research aim will be approached using visual scripting software such as Grasshopper to simulate daylight analysis and to generate an optimisation algorithm. Previous research on the topics of UHI have revealed different methods for solving specific problems, all focusing on using software analysis to determine an informed decision on construction. The paper contributes via a computational approach of material selection to battle urban heat island effects.

summary The SHADOWPACK package of computer programs has been developed to facilitate shading evaluations, for the direct component of solar radiation, with general 3D models. An interactive solid modelling program allows the user to construct and view the 3D model before saving it for further analysis and display. Other programs permit the graphical display of the shading situation throughout the year, the quantitative assessment of energy received on different faces of the model, and the display of the distribution of energy received on particular faces by means of contour plots. The use of the computer graphics approach has proved particularly convenient because of the similarity between the techniques used for graphical and numerical algorithms

summary A knowledge based computer-aided architectural design system (KB-CAAD) for the schematic design and evaluation of passive solar buildings is presented. The presented tool is based on the integration of knowledge based and procedural simulation methods with any available CAAD system for building representation. The knowledge base contains the heuristic rules for the design of passive solar buildings. Whenever possible, the knowledge base guides the designer through the decision making process. However, if 'rules of thumb' are not acceptable for the particular design problem, the KB-CAAD tool guides the architect towards the optimal solution, by using a procedural simulation model. It is demonstrated, through a case study, that the proposed knowledge based design system not only leads to the design of better solar buildings, but that it takes less time and man-power to introduce the geometrical data that would be needed for a regular non-solar building representation

summary With the development of economy, China is facing the contradiction between urban development and the shortage of urban space resources.This article takes the small and medium-sized underground stations on the Guanhui Intercity Railway and the Changzhutan Intercity Railway as the main research objects of this thesis; Analyze the influencing factors of the space performance of the underground station, and design the BP neural network structure based on this; According to the preparation of relevant technical data, Anylogic is used to simulate the setting of simulation parameters and current station operation, to extract ideal samples, and to build and train the underground station Spatial performance characteristic analysis model.Finally, the spatial performance optimization method of Intercity Railway Underground Station Based on neural network is summarized, the optimization process is sorted out, the numerical optimization results are obtained, and the optimization scheme is proposed to verify the effectiveness of the method.

summary It might seem that architecture has been forced to choose, once again, between two worlds of existence. One of them might be the construction of the tangible, the other, a “formal fantasy” that will never reach a legitimate status among the “tectonic” or the “structural”. This vague spectrum has confirmed the fear of loosing typology as a proof, of loosing a foremost validation for architecture. But one could see the virtual as a possibility to generate a structure of discourses and interactive tactics to reformulate the typological. This meaning that the virtual could transcend the so called “graphic” stigma and actually produce the discourses and spatial strategies to radicalize typology and move towards a radicalization of content.
