summary This paper describes the development of an Intelligent Adaptive Control (IAC) framework that uses machine learning to integrate responsive passive conditioning at the envelope into a building’s comprehensive conventional environmental control system. Initial results show that by leveraging adaptive computational control to orchestrate the building’s mechanical and passive systems together, there exists a demonstrably greater potential to maximize energy efficiency than can be gained by focusing on either system individually, while the addition of more passive conditioning strategies significantly increase human comfort, health and wellness building-wide. Implicitly, this project suggests that, given the development and ever increasing adoption of building automation systems, a significant new site for computational design in architecture is expanding within the post-occupancy operation of a building, in contrast to architects’ traditional focus on the building’s initial design. Through the development of an experimental framework that includes physical material testing linked to computational simulation, this project begins to describe a set of tools and procedures by which architects might better conceptualize, visualize, and experiment with the design of adaptive building envelopes. This process allows designers to ultimately engage in the opportunities presented by active systems that govern the daily interactions between a building, its inhabitants, and their environment long after construction is completed. Adaptive material assemblies at the envelope are given special attention since it is here that a building’s performance and urban expression are most closely intertwined.

summary The capacity to respond dynamically to changes in external and internal environments open new possibilities in the interaction between buildings, humans and the environment. The development of dynamic envelopes requires the integration of various systems- geometric, structural, and electronic-responsive and their interaction. The paper reports the results from the "Dynamic Cloud Project" and presents a design and fabrication methodology to integrate kinetic behaviour with material constraints; the simulation of responses by connecting components with programmable input and behaviour. The paper presents a modular, component-driven systems construction based on a carrier-component surface geometry called responsive carrier-component envelope (RCCE) and describes the modelling, fabrication and assembly of such envelopes. The protocols developed in the project are reported in the paper and highlight the opportunities and consequences of how local components relate to the whole carrier envelope with multiple constraints and scale considerations. The results of the prototyping and experimentation with this project are reported in the paper. The paper also discusses future applications of the research and outlines new possibilities and design opportunities in prototyping responsive carrier-component envelopes.

summary The impact of CAD on the design process itself has to date been negligible. The vast majority of architects using information technology in the design of buildings have been either job-trained, viewing CAD as an optimization tool, or educated in academic programs where CAD is treated as a specialized subject, isolated from the core design studios and allowing for the perpetuation of manufacturing/ systems based ideologies which have changed very little over the last century. The tragedy is that this is happening while the design studios themselves explore vastly more complex and contemporary issues highlighted by the works of architecture's avantgard. The result is a constant, perverse repetition of arcane, industrial-age processes spilling over into information-age environments, constituting a misuse of the electronic medium; one that could offer the possibility of restating conceptual spatial exploration by its own definition and enabling students and by extension the profession to envision and test the design of the built environment from its most essential aspect, that of inhabitation. There is a synthetic chunk of universe at our fingertips where we can explore space not as an abstraction but as a phenomenological experience, allowing us to exercise our freedom to move and possibly regain our condition of Modernity.

summary This paper explores the impact of information technology on the architectural design process as seen through different design studios from three schools of architecture in Southern California over a two year period.

All three studios tested notions of representation, simulation and the design process in relation to a post-industrial world and its impact on how we design for it. The sites for two of these studios were in the city of Berlin, where the spearhead of the information age and a leftover of the industrial revolution overlap in an urban condition that is representative of our world after the cold war. The three studios describe a progressive shift in the use of information technology in the design process, from nearly pure image-driven simulation to a more low-tech, highly creative uses of everyday computing tools. Combined, all three cases describe an array of scenarios for content-supportive uses of digital media in a design studio. The first studio described here, from USC, utilized computer modeling and visualization to design a building for a site located within the former no-mans' land of the Berlin Wall. The second studio, from SCI-Arc, produced an urban design proposal for an area along the former Berlin Wall and included a pan-geographic design collaboration via Internet between SCI-Arc/Los Angeles and SCI-Arc/Switzerland. The third and last studio from Woodbury University participated in the 1997 ACSA/Dupont Laminated Glass Competition designing a consulate general for Germany and one for Hong Kong. They employed a hybrid digital/non-digital process extracting experiential representations from simple chipboard study models and then using that information to explore an "enhanced model" through digital imaging processes.

The end of the cold war was coincidental with the explosive popularization of information technology as a consumer product and is poised to have huge impact on how and what we design for our cities. Few places in world express this potential as does the city of Berlin. These three undergraduate design studios employed consumer-grade technology in an attempt to make a difference in how we design, incorporating discussions of historical change, ideological premise and what it means to be an architect in a world where image and content can become easily disconnected from one another.

summary Computer tools that provide support in the early explorative phase of architectural design are rare. In order to explore the solution space of a design problem, architects in general rely on the use of paper and pencil. We are developing a system which will assist the designer in the exploration of a particular design problem, focusing initially on 2D floorplans. The format chosen for this system is one in which the computer, in interaction with the designer, "evolves" designs. A major obstacle associated with the use of an evolutionary approach is the adequate representation of a floorplan in a genome. We propose a tree-structure in which the nodes represent organising-principles that dictate how the leaves attached to it are organised. Figure 1 shows an example of a tree with four levels; the terminal nodes represent the elements to be placed. The first level no only represents an organising-principle, but also a contour; this contour is either fixed (e.g. dictated by the environment) or free to evolve. On either side of the tree-structure two interpretations of this tree are shown.

summary In an intensive workshop from November 11th to November 18th 2002, five teams consisting of members of architectural offices, artists, planners, developers, citizens & students came forward with a series of ideas & designs at urban & landscape level for Trekroner Øst, a new neighbourhood in Roskilde, Denmark.. 3dkroner.dk1, an interactive, web based 4D public participation tool (PPT) was created and used for communicating the workshop’s results to a broader public on the one hand, and to start a two way communication process between planners and citizens on the other hand. In this paper I will rather describe the tool’s development, its implementation in the workshop and the experiences the project team made from this process than discuss public participation tools in general.

summary We address information modeling and exchange in asynchronous, distributed collaboration between software applications or design agents that are heterogeneous, that is, developed independently based on application- specific data models. We identify the requirements an integration environment must satisfy if it is to support the semantically correct exchange of selected, locally generated information between the agents. These requirements are distilled from both the literature and our own experiments with the Object Modeling Language OML. The resulting requirements were then formalized into an information modeling and exchange environment constructed around the modeling language called SPROUT (supported by a compiler) and an associated software architecture that can be targeted toward many different hardware and software platforms. A unique capability supported in this environment is formal support for integrating existing applications: Given a schematic description in SPROUT, a formal specification can be used to generate computer programs that provably map data to and from the applications.

summary Previous research has established virtual reality provides users with unique experience. However, litter is known how users interact with virtual reality enabled interfaces differently from other conventional interfaces and how user-system interaction with virtual reality contributes to usability. This paper proposes a theoretical frame work to better understand the usability and user experience of a virtual reality enabled interface from an integrated view of information science and human-computer interaction. Based on the framework, an experimental case study was conducted. The context was taken from an Internet based virtual reality system where viewers are asked to evaluate design of furniture. In this paper, an overview of the research method and analysis is presented.

summary This paper aims to discuss new preservation strategies for Rio de Janeiro's Rain Forests threatened by favelas' growth. It is supported by the developing of digital technology associated to urban design practices with a focus turned to a careful watching of the boundaries between the favela and the forest. Our case study is the Favela do Vidigal, situated in the forest, at the top of one of the city mountains and close to the sea. The paper presents a proposal based on people-environment relationships studies, considering the existence of a phisical-virtual limit which could be a permeable balance and control promoting.

summary This article aims to present analyzes and perceptions regarding the experience of a project developed under the following axes: women, disabilities and the development of Assistive Technology in spaces called Fablabs. The study is developed according to an exploratory approach, with a qualitative nature. This paper provides an introduction, an exploration of the experiments and the reflections over the performed activities. In the practical stages, among others, methods of an ethnographic nature and Design Research were used. The group of women, mothers of children with disabilities, variable in size during the practices (from two to five people), carried out activities to develop assistive technology products using digital manufacturing tools in a public laboratory of the Fablab Livre SP Network , in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The reflections of this study go towards questions related to women's self- esteem in the face of processes of inclusion in the technological area. The multi-signification of the Fablab space and the need to expand the intersectional debate within these environments are also encounters provided by this research.

summary The COVID-19 pandemic generated great changes in world societies, and Brazilian cities felt strongly the effects of the disease in physical and social aspects. Thus, this article seeks to describe a work experience involving COVID-19 data for use in urban planning analyses. Its main methodology is the treatment of data about the pandemic in the city of Fortaleza and georeferencing these to generate urban readings. The work resulted in a shapefile file that could be shared among those who wanted to research how the dissemination of the new coronavirus was influenced by specific urban issues in the city of Fortaleza, in addition to generating learning for the students involved in the process. From this it was possible to observe the importance of discussions both on urban policies and the importance of data in urban planning models adopted in the country in view of the new pandemic situation.

summary Due to climate change and the problematic amount of waste and CO2 emissions in the construction industry, non-human organisms and sustainable solutions are key motivators of the study. This paper focuses on developing a bioreceptive (Guillitte, 1995) composite suitable for additive manufacturing, composed to support growth of various organisms. It investigates key properties which have shown to be beneficial for promoting biological growth, such as water absorption, water permeability, humidity, and surface texture. The study evaluates the effect of two groups of clay-based waste additives, wooden sawdust (Arslan, et al., 2021) and sediment material sourced from local tunnel excavation in Prague. Simultaneously the need for intelligent reintegration and waste use is prevalent. Additive fabrication offers the ability to test a variety of composites and (re-)integrate them into the manufacturing processes. Current approach explores how to design artificial environments/skins for greenery and small life with the potential to improve both diversity and survivability while maintaining a better climate in its immediate surroundings. Bioreceptive design has the potential to improve the quality of the urban environment and bring new aesthetic influences into it (Cruz and Beckett 2016, p. 51-64).

summary The paper makes reference to issues of communication and architectural visualization by means of computers in education. It also addresses issues of representation and the necessity for ethics and esthetic in the digital visualization of architecture. The presence of ethical issues in the architectural discourse of the modern movement, offers a fundamental framework for addressing the education on digital architectural representation. Objectives: 1. Use the architectural framework of rules generated by the modern movement and their representations, as a means for systematically explore the CAD language; 2. Study the visualization of architectural space through the visualization of modern space as for instance in the case of modern pioneers of the didactic model. // Observations: This educational strategy is not exclusive and does not resign to our present condition. It finds in the scope of the modern movement a suitable field of experimentation. Let us take advantage of our study of the modern pioneers as a safeguard on our sense of esthetic and ethics. summary Leon Battista Alberti defines the Beauty of Architecture "a concert of all the parts together, performed with proportion and logic in something in which it is possible to find again each event, in a modality that will not allow the inserting, extracting out or changing anything without decreasing its Beauty". With generative art we can approach, directly, this complex paradigm of proportions and logic, and we can directly design the Beauty, or better our idea of beauty, before the realization of each single possible artificial event. This is the heart of generative approach. The Generative Art work for the beauty, in the sense of the humanistic approach of Renaissance, because the generative code, which is the project of generative design, is the real structure of the idea. It defines how to concert all the parts and the dynamic relationship among these parts in the evolution of complexity. The generative project defines which is the law of proportion and which logic the dynamic evolution will follow. All the events that this code can generate will be, in humanistic sense, beautiful, or, if we prefer, will belong and represent our Idea of world. And more. The generative art produces events that are unique and complex. The uniqueness and complexity are strongly related one each other. As in Nature, each event is generated through an artificial life, which, as in the natural life, produces uniqueness, identity and complexity during a identifiable time. This complexity is a natural-like complexity. We can recognise, in the artificial ware we produce through this generative approach, the harmony and the beauty of the natural-like complexity that refers to the Humanistic approach of Renaissance: Man, Geometry, and Nature as references for "the harmony which is not thought as an individual caprice but as conscious reasoning."
