summary This study aims to develop the application and exploration of digital manufacturing technology in the design of textile composite materials in the digital fabrication. The inspiration for this study comes from the folds of mushrooms and resulting caps. In nature, many organisms grow flexible bodies as structural systems instead of relying on hard bones. This raises the question of whether soft textile materials can also have the potential to serve as structural support materials. Research is divided into three parts. The first part aims to understand the application of non-woven fabrics in the construction field, and examine the manufacturing and reprocessing methods of composite materials. The second part aims to establish the logic of form finding and shape optimization. The third part is the design and manufacturing stage. This research not only establishes a digital fabrication work-flow based on composite fabric materials but also develops a large-scale self-supporting structure as a verification of this process.

summary The foreshadowing and transfiguration of architectural space using digital technologies proposes a new order among the physical, symbolic and digital interrelations, where these entities coexist, not only as part of the process that orchestrates thought, but as important mechanisms within the creative process. So we accept that the potentiality of a computerized diagrammatic model expresses more that simply functional aspects, becoming the representation of thought, problems solving and communication, developing images that allow us to explore and to evaluate alternatives, bringing closer objects that we perceive by means of the senses, as well as those that we imagine or dream of.

summary Since March 2020, architecture schools in the world took significant decisions to abandon face-to-face learning; overnight, for security reasons, institutions around the world had to close their doors, confining professors, and students at home to teach online. summary Attempts to address interoperability issues in digital design information have become stilted. A lack of any real success is more indicative of the questions asked rather than the solutions proposed. If design information is the progenitor of design representation, and representation is a method by which to encode, store, and distribute design information, then the issues associated with digital design information can be seen as special cases of the general the problems associated with communication. Considering a representation by asking: ‘What is the information that needs to be communicated?’ and, ‘With whom is this information being communicated?’ may provide a better perspective from which to assess specific technological problems such as software interoperability. The goal of this paper is a call to attention – an exercise in critical thought and a provocation. Can re-conceptualizing the problems with the representation and interoperability of digital design information as generic problems of communication offer insight on novel solutions? A brief overview of the challenges posed to interoperability is presented along with current and past efforts to address this issue. An alternative methodology for the communication of design information via process rather than state descriptions is proposed, followed by a summary conclusion.

summary This paper presents the example of the reconversion of an important tram station from the origins of electricity in Portugal that was still in use until the late 1990’s but became redundant since then. Its significant urban presence and the importance of preserving the memory of the old trams that were still in use some years ago in Lisbon, led to an innovative solution, combining public value and heritage protection. In 2011, the Lisbon City Council agreed to give the building and its site for university use, namely to be transformed into a student’s facility, as a study, leisure, recreational and cultural space of the IST, open 24h a day. This new university building, located just one block away from the traditional IST compound, was called IST Learning Center and extended the notion of campus outside its walls and into the city’s urban fabric.

summary The paper discusses the intersection of two main agendas for Chilean governments that are BIM (Building Information Modeling) and BEAM (Building Environmental Assessment Methods). It shows the state-of-the-art in both fields in Chile as well as in the world, it discusses some previous efforts of integration; it found some new opportunities for collaboration and finally proposes a new framework that brings together BIM and BEAM. The development of the method includes BIM Models, databases and spread sheets for building energy Certification, it finally provides a semi-automatic environment where architects model their design in BIM and this Information is used as an input to the certification process. Potentials and risk of this method are discussed.

summary There is a variety of BIM brands present in the Latin American market, there are several questions about their performance in the Spanish language. BIM software companies with a presence in Latin America were appointed to a series of structured and sequenced workshop. At the end of each talk, a specialized audience responded to a series of structured surveys on both theoretical and practical aspects of the software presented. The demonstration consisted of two areas: one theoretical and one practical. The theory presented relevant historical attributes, brand visibility data and some known examples of its use. In the practical part, a live demonstration of the use of the basic tools and functions of the interface was requested. It was derived that: The companies fulfilled the expectation on the agenda in a dissimilar way, the responses to the surveys revealed a similar performance in general terms (modeling, prices), the workshops showed significant differences in theoretical aspects such as known examples, certification. There is a need to advance in the dissemination of the performance of the different BIM brands in the AEC industry in Latin America, the level of individual experience strongly influences the evaluation of the software, the user's profile and the type of project will determine the software to use.

summary The work compiles several academic and Research initiatives, and aims to establish a right link between two agendas that governments, AEC industry and academia normally handle separated, this is BIM (Building Information Modeling) and Wood. By running several literature reviews, interviews and software tests, the state-of-the-art was reached in both fields; several cases linking BIM and wood are shown and discussed. It can be concluded that both fields have several commons processes and also that many cases have used just a few BIM tools, disregarding a big potential of these methodologies.

summary Our current research is focused on the optimization and evaluation of the architectural building design (gestalt), related and in balance to the inner organization of a building, the floorplan layout. This paper is focused on the impact of Space Layout Planning supported by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) applied to Architectural Design. We present an overview and wide description of the „architectural design“, the classical definition and methods; and its evolution in practice since the ICT tools impact of the last forty years. Definition such as space program, space relationships, space function are wide discussed to understand the phenomena of architectural layout design, the parameters, variables, constraints and goals of each design. Second we present the state of the art and the current techniques and approaches (optimization, generative systems, artificial intelligence, genetic algorithms, physically based modeling, etc), a classification structure is generated to visualize the areas of impact and use of each technique (different areas from architectural design). Finally we described a complete framework to research and develop our own methodologies based on a specific case of architectural design, the current CAD tools and the possible develop of new tools using the impact of BIM systems.

summary For nearly thirty years, the digital phenomenon has integrated many disciplines. Those involved in image processing and analysis took advantage of this major technological breakthrough to revisit the tools and methods of their discipline. In this context, the architectural field, and more specifically the one of heritage analysis and documentation, have greatly benefited from the development of acquisition and visualization techniques. Today, it is no longer unusual to document a building with millions of three-dimensional spatial coordinates. Nevertheless, until the last century, documentation by drawing corresponded to a work of reverse engineering in which it belonged to the architect to understand the object and to represent its key feature. Today, 3D data acquisition technology promotes an increasingly “figurative” representation of architecture. In this paper, we consider some epistemological avenues for the integration of those new approaches to the requirements of architectural representation.

summary This research concentrates on the combination of remote sensing devices, georeferenced data, web-based optimization techniques and Location Based Services in revitalization. Its aim is to enhance the delivery of information about the development potentialities of existing buildings. The present and idle stock of buildings is extensive. Nonetheless, significant data and information about existing buildings is hardly available. The real estate owners are usually not known by prospective clients and they can be elicited only with substantial effort. But even if data about a building is available it is difficult to valuate it precisely, because of missing standard classification techniques. The question whether or not a building is suitable for a certain subsequent use is therefore hard to answer. It involves an extensive expenditure of time and manpower. Recent publications however, demonstrate that requests for the re-use of buildings can be solved through the use of combinatorial optimization techniques (Loemker 2006a, 2006b, 2007). Within these approaches researchers mainly concentrate on the architect dealing with inquiries from clients. These inquiries typically address the question if specific buildings are suitable for particular future uses. With the aid of optimization engines the architect can solve these requests through a description of the existing buildings and the corresponding enquiries in terms of specific criteria such as number and size of rooms or adjacency between rooms. According to an unambiguous syntax these approaches can be applied to any building type. The building data is stored in databases which can be inquired through optimization engines which thereupon calculate suitable solutions to the demands made by the client. But even if these approaches demonstrate high potential, their bottleneck lies in the exclusive use through the architect. Neither can they be addressed to buildings that are not listed in the architects own inventory listings nor can they be used by the clients themselves. Furthermore, no reliable statement about a prospective reuse of a building can be made directly on site by prospective clients, i.e. buyers or renters. In our research we examined if ad-hoc analyses of existing buildings can be accomplished through the clients themselves with the aid of Location Based Services that can be accessed by common remote sensing devices. The aim is to give prospective clients the possibility to visit a building and run in-situ usability simulations. To accomplish this, building data will be transferred between the building and the client through the use of ordinary communication devices. These devices automatically connect to server-based applications, which compare the requirements of the client with the existing building and run remote simulations on concrete further utilization. The newly generated information will then be passed back to the client’s device. In the paper we address a scenario of a prospective client who visits a city where he hits on an unused building he might be interest in. The client wishes to gain immediate and accurate information if the building is able to meet his demands regarding the space needed for his company. Different techniques investigated, their assets and drawbacks will be described that could accomplish suchlike tasks.

summary It is obvious that the preparation and compliance with cost estimates for a proposed architectural design is indispensable for successful realization of building projects. A variety of methods exists that can be used by the architect to achieve this objective. However, most of these methods are regularly not used until the design is completed. In many cases this procedure leads to cost overruns. Hence, our paradigm is to estimate the total building costs prior to the generation of detailed designs and thus use the costs of building elements as design parameters right from the beginning to produce design solutions which entail the least possible costs. For this purpose we invert the customary process through the use of building element costs as a means for the automatic generation of monetarily assessable design solutions. For various reasons we concentrate on the design of housing projects. The methodology however, can be adopted to any other kind of building typology.

title Solving Revitalization-Problems by the Use of a Constraint Programming Language

summary This research focuses on an approach to describe principles in architectural layout planning within the domain of revitalization. With the aid of mathematical rules, which are executed by a computer, solutions to design problems are generated. Provided that “design” is in principle a combinatorial problem, i.e. a constraint-based search for an overall optimal solution of a problem, an exemplary method will be described to solve such problems in architectural layout planning. To avoid conflicts relating to theoretical subtleness, a customary approach adopted from Operations Research has been chosen in this work [1]. In this approach, design is a synonym for planning, which could be described as a systematic and methodical course of action for the analysis and solution of current or future problems. The planning task is defined as an analysis of a problem with the aim to prepare optimal decisions by the use of mathematical methods. The decision problem of a planning task is represented by an optimization model and the application of an efficient algorithm in order to aid finding one or more solutions to the problem. The basic principle underlying the approach presented herein is the understanding of design in terms of searching for solutions that fulfill specific criteria. This search is executed by the use of a constraint programming language.

title Revitalization of Existing Buildings through Sustainable Non-Destructive Floor Space Relocation

summary The revitalisation of existing buildings is getting more and more important. We are facing a situation where in many cases there is no need to design new buildings because an increasing number of existing buildings is not used anymore. The most ecological procedure to revitalise these buildings would be through a continuous usage and by making few or no alterations to the stock. Thus, the modus operandi could be named a “non-destructive” approach. From the architects’ point of view, non-destructive redesign of existing buildings is time-consuming and complex. The methodology we developed to aid architects in solving such tasks is based on exchanging or swapping utilisation of specific rooms to converge in a design solution. With the aid of mathematical rules, which will be executed by the use of a computer, solutions to floor space relocation problems will be generated. Provided that “design” is in principle a combinatorial problem, i.e., a constraint-based search for an overall optimal solution of a problem, an exemplary method will be described to solve such problems.

summary In 1845 Edgar Allan Poe wrote the poem “The Raven”, an act full of poetry, love, passion, mourning, melancholia and death. In his essay “The Theory of Composition” which was published in 1846 Poe proved that the poem is based on an accurate mathematical description. Not only in literature are structures present that are based on mathematics. In the work of famous musicians, artists or architects like Bach, Escher or Palladio it is evident that the beauty and clarity of their work as well as its traceability has often been reached through the use of intrinsic mathematic coherences. If suchlike structures could be described within architecture, their mathematical abstraction could supplement “The Theory of Composition” of a building. This research focuses on an approach to describe layout principles of existing buildings in the form of mathematical rules. Provided that “design” is in principle a combinatorial problem, i.e. a constraint-based search for an overall optimal solution of a design problem, two exemplary methods will be described to apply new utilizations to existing buildings through the use of these rules.
