summary Cork usage is one of the most promising trends in sustainable development of materials, due to its unique natural properties, exceptionally good environmental qualities and its high potential to incorporate innovative technology. It can be reused, and it is built with renewable and reusable materials that contain lower levels of embedded energy and carbon. Today amongst other uses we see cork used as a textile for clothing, in automobile parts, and as a thermal shield in space crafts. However, there is still a lack of information and diffusion within the engineering and architecture sectors; stakeholders lack awareness of how to use and select cork materials for construction, compared with other competing products. This research plans to explore future cork industry developments, cork recycling and new cork-based materials, which are still in various stages of development with enormous potential for construction as an eco-friendly solution. The aim is to test or adapt them to be used in construction, with an emphasis in CAD/CAM fabrication processes. Hoping that in the future there will be greater application in architecture and eventually will contribute to greater sustainability in the construction business as well as the cork sector.

summary Design and presentation of new furniture is today a great challenge that requires a large amount of resources: exhibition space, photographic studios, physical prototypes, etc. In this paper we present a new RTR framework RTR-based that allows a more sustainable design and communication process. The framework is addressed to furniture designers, interior designers, furniture companies and presents techniques and methods developed to meet the requirement to ensure predictive rendering quality required by the high level furniture industries. Finally, in order to ensure full functionality a number of tools described in the paper were developed.

summary The ongoing research project Citography explores the impact of technologies such as image sharing, social media, mobile devices, geolocation, surveying, computer vision and data visualisation on our understanding, mapping and design of cities. It questions how these technologies impact notions of place, location, commons and citizenship. This paper presents a first framework resulting from a case study looking into the relationships between protests in physical public space of the city and within the public sphere of social media. It uses data scraping, modelling, data visualisation and animation to construct a tempo-spatial model of the city. The case study explores public spaces vs public sphere and their vision with different devices, emphasising collectively constructed surroundings by people who participate in the protest.

title GA2: a Programming Environment for Abstract Generative Fine Art

summary Fine artists looking to use computers to create generative works, especially those artists inclined towards abstraction, often face an uncomfortable choice in the selection of software tools. On the one hand there are a number of commercial and shareware programs available which implement a few techniques in an easy to use GUI environment. Unfortunately such programs often impose a certain look or style and are not terribly versatile or expressive. The other choice seems to be writing code from scratch, in a language such as c or Java. This can be very time consuming as every new work seems to demand a new program, and the artist's ability to write code can seldom keep pace with his ability to imagine new visual ideas. This paper describes a software system created by the author called GA2 which has been implemented in the Matlab software environment. By layering GA2 over Matlab the artist can take advantage of a very mature programming environment which includes extensive mathematical libraries, simple graphics routines, GUI construction tools, built-in help facilities, and command line, batch mode, and GUI modes of interaction. In addition, GA2 is very portable and can run on Macintosh, Windows, and Unix systems with almost no incremental effort for multi-platform support. GA2 is a work in progress and an extension of the completed GA1 environment. It is medium independent, and can be used for all manner of image, animation, and sound production. GA1 includes a complete set of genetic algorithm operations for breeding families of graphical marks, a database function for managing and recalling various genes, a set of statistical operations for creating various distributions of marks on a canvas or animation frame, a unique Markov-chain-likeoperator for generating families of visually similar lines or paths, and a complete L-system implementation. GA2 extends GA1 by adding more generative techniques such as tiling and symmetry operations, Thom's cusp catastrophe, and mechanisms inspired by complexity science notions such as cellular automata, fractals, artificial life, and chaos. All of these techniques are encapulated in genetic representations. This paper is supplemented with examples from the authors art work, and comments on the philosophy behind this method of working, and its relation towards the reinvigoration of abstraction after post-modernism.

summary This paper aims to discuss representative subjects, such as freehand drawing and its operational tools, which allow 2D sketching through graphic drawing tables, whereas virtual reality head-mounted displays are used for 3D sketches. A pilot project exercise was carried out in the building of the Centro de Divulgaçao Científica e Cultural (CDCC-USP), in Sao Carlos (SP - Brazil). As a result, this research presents a comparative chart that investigates the potential uses of these technologies in architecture teaching and in the act of designing. Moreover, this scenario includes the 360? image technology that presents itself as a vehicle of immersion and apprehension of space, having as a backdrop the unfoldings of social isolation arising from COVID - 19.

summary Despite the multiple initiatives of extension activities currently implemented at USP Sao Carlos (SP - Brazil), the relationship between university and society can be strengthened in the context of a public presence in the physical spaces of the Campus, especially considering the majority of the city's population, which is not integrated in its academic community and doesn’t use the same areas. This paper proposes that the products developed can encourage the neighboring communities of the Campus to enter its inner spaces, through a spatial familiarization in virtual environments. To achieve this, two distinct technologies were researched - virtual reality and virtual tour with 360° photography - evaluating their qualities and constraints. Finally, the main differences between the two processes were grouped in a comparative chart, as a result of this research.

summary This paper focuses on sketch-based and parametric modeling as two externalization devices used in architectural design practice. The first part of this paper addresses features and ability of these externalization tools to support design activities during the early design steps. The second part proposes an association process of a sketch-based modeling tool (SketSha-Archi®) and a parametric modeling tool (Grasshopper®) to create an advanced process for daylight optimization. The process aimed to associate the hand-sketching freedom with the precise exploration functions of digital tools (parametric modeling and evaluation tools).

summary This paper addresses the integration of the daylight effect during the early stages of the architectural design process. The first part presents a design assistance method that helps designers to characterize their daylight intentions and materialize them in architectural solutions. In this part, we describe the implementation of this method in a design tool, denoted DaylightGen, the implemented process and the different system components. The second part of this paper focuses on the investigation of the potential of the proposed method in design process. It was evaluated in educational design case study. This part integrates the experimentation process and his results.

title Towards a Formal Logic of Design Rationalization

summary Certain extensions to standard predicate logic are proposed and used as a framework for critical logical study of patterns of inference in design reasoning. It is shown that within this framework a modal logic of design rationalization (suggested by an empirical study reported earlier) can be formally defined in terms of quantification over a universe of discourse of `relevant points of view'. Five basic principles of the extended predicate logic are listed, on the basis of which the validity of ten modal patterns of inference encountered in design rationalization is tested. The basic idea of reducing modality to quantification is traced back to the philosophy of von Wright, and the approach is compared to that of related work on logic in design.

title Towards integrated, intelligent, and compliant computer modeling of buildings

summary This paper is a survey of current research into computer modeling of buildings. Just as much, however, it is a contribution to a debate on the future of this field of research (and as such expresses the author's opinions, rather than mere facts). It is suggested that more research should be conducted in a top-down "'problem-driven" (rather than in a bottom-up. "technology-driven") manner. As the goal of future research, ten desirable system properties are proposed and grouped together under three headings: integration. intelligence", and compliance. A critical survey of the current state-of-the-art of computer modeling of buildings is given, to assess how far we are from systems with such properties. On that background problems are discussed which are major obstacles to the proposed kind of systems (hence good starting points lot problem-driven research and some ways of approaching these problems are briefly evaluated.

summary The automated design of architectural floor plans satisfying given topological and dimensional constraints is a challenging field of research. In this paper ABSTRACTION is pointed out as an important conceptual tool of this field. A critical discussion of existing plan-design methods leads to the conclusion that the potentials of abstraction as a tool have not yet been fully recognized. The rest of the paper is an attempt to improve this situation by suggesting a new approach to automated floor-plan design. Theoretically, design is viewed as a one-to-many relation; a tree whose lines are directed from the root (the problem) towards the leaves (the solutions). Abstraction is viewed as the inverse many-to-one relation. A particular relation of abstraction is defined, such that the intermediate nodes of the tree (between root and leaves) are themselves floor plans, but are less detailed than the solutions. From the study of this concept of abstraction, it is concluded that the design algorithm based on it is likely to have certain useful properties

title A Basic Problem Definition Language for Automated Floor Plan Design

summary CADLINE has abstract only. Algorithms for automated floor plan design need a machine- readable description of properties of the desired floor plans. In this report BPDL ('Basic Problem Definition Language'), a rudimentary language for stating such descriptions, is developed. The development is based on a discussion of pragmatic aspects of possible features of the language. The resulting language is described by formal definitions of syntax and semantics, accompanied by informal explanations. Finally, experiments with a floor plan design algorithm that supports BPDL are reported and it is concluded that even a rudimentary language like BPDL can describe relatively non- trivial floor plan layouts, provided a set of geometrical primitives, attributes and relations that make up the language are carefully chosen. Further research along the lines of BPDL is suggested, and the importance of a systematic approach to development of future specification languages for architectural design is stressed

summary Many constraint satisfaction problems are combinatorically explosive, i.e. have far too many solutions. Optimization techniques may help in selecting solutions for consideration, but a reasonable measure of optimality is not always at hand. The branch & sample algorithm is presented as an alternative to optimization. If the constraints themselves limit the solution set sufficiently, the algorithm finds all solutions, but otherwise a suitable number of solutions (determined by the user) is generated, such that each new solution has a maximal distance to those already generated. The distance measure used is a so called ultrametric distance expressible in terms of the search tree: solutions are viewed as m-tuples of fixed length, each of whose m decision variables corresponds to a level in the search tree. The distance between two solutions is the number of edges from their leaf nodes to the closest common predecessor node in the tree. For problems whose decision variables depend on each other (as is often the case) the set of solutions generated in this way corresponds well to the intuitive notion of a 'representative sample.' The principles of Branch & Sample are first introduced informally, then the algorithm is developed by stepwise refinement, and two examples of its use are given. A fully tested application-independent implementation of the algorithm in C is given as an appendix

Optimization techniques may help in selecting a small number of solutions for consideration, but a reasonable measure of optimality is not always at hand. A simple algorithm called Branch & Sample is suggested as an alternative to optimization. Combining breath-first and depth- first search Branch & Sample finds solution distributed over the search tree. The aim is to obtain a limited set of solutions that corresponds well to the intuitive motion of a representative, uniformly scattered sample. A precise definition of this notion is discussed in relation to the algorithm whose effect is illustrated by two geometric design problems. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated and it is concluded that Branch & Sample is applicable to certain types of problems, and refinements can extend the scope of application

summary Theoretical and experimental results from the implementation of a system for computer-aided floor-plan design are reported. The system is based on a potentially exhaustive search for solutions that satisfy user-specified constraints, but the paper concentrates on techniques for limiting and guiding the search. The emphasis is on two aspects of floor-plan design: the use of a formalized concept of sketching, and the language in which design constraints are specified by the user. A well-defined concept of abstract draft plans is achieved by limiting corner coordinates to intervals, rather than single numbers. Mathematical properties of draft and their defining constraints as derived from the user's constraints are outlined, and the role of drafts in computer- aided floor plan design is investigated and illustrated by examples. The specification language is based on a small set of primitives whose combined power of expression is also illustrated. The syntax and semantics of the language are formally defined (in two appendices), and the importance of careful development of languages for future design automation is pointed out

title Understanding and interpreting urban space (in)formation

summary This paper introduces a novel approach to understanding the complex information and logics of urban spaces by the non-professional public. A model for Interpretation of Qualities in Urban Space (aMIQUS) is proposed. The objectives are threefold: first, to form common, valid and applicable measures to assess features of space design; second, to indicate the developmental trait that considerably affect users' spatial experience which - taken as a consequence - derives from either sustainable/prudent or poor design decisions; and third, to generically recreate and visually represent urban spaces for communicative purposes. The model represents an identification method, not a problem-solving mechanism and is intended as a pragmatic instrument for recognizing crucial information, narrative, embedded in spatial scene. Model is followed by the initial idea to extend it in terms of an educational digital interface for the general public, participating in the process of urban decision-making. The paper concisely summarizes both theoretical and applicative efforts.

summary The technological tools applied to the field of the art allow me to fulfill the projects and searches that were formulated by the historical vanguard: to materialize the simulation of movement, of the virtual, of the simultaneous, of the permanently mutant thing. And also to sustain the values of contemporary art as well as to operate from a notorious devaluation of the referent and, at the same time, with a limitless mimetic freedom to accentuate the crossing of opposite disciplines, which was previously defined by collages, assemblages, photomontages. In this way, I redefine these crossings from images where the certainties on the real thing/that represented/that done/that simulated disappear.

summary In the necessity to fortify the inhabitants’ decisions in the transformation of their own habitats, it was opened an investigation line about design and production of cartographic maps and models as part of the participative management device in urban environmental projects. In that stage it worked with organizations orientated to improve socio-environmental situation in indigent neighborhoods and settlements. This investigation is part of the UBAC and T Project of the Science and Technique Secretariat of the University of Buenos Aires during the last four years, consisting in an exploration of new professional sceneries for the graphic design management. In this report we present a model in which it is explored the outstanding variables in the design of this elements and its interactions in the course of the project, specially, the decisions related to the technological matter.
