summary From natural objects to man-made artifacts, tiling is all around us: it is the act of rationalizing highly complex form by breaking it up into smaller, continuous components. If well pursued, tiled objects can be easily designed and assembled. However, a geometric-centric view of tiling, whereby a predefined form determines the shape, size, and organization of tiles, has victimized the field of digital design. This paper questions the role of tiling as rationalizing method and offers an alternative theoretical framework and technical grounding for tiling behavior: the act of generation-through-tessellation informed by material behavior. The tools developed are implemented in the design of a 3D-printed chaise lounge, using multiple materials. The technical objective is to introduce a quantitative characterization and analysis of property mapping, as it is applied to a tiling algorithm using Voronoi cell tessellation. The network of tessellated Voronoi cells is used as an element in the Voronoi Finite Element Method (V-FEM) that the author developed. Various characterization functions and geometric parameters are generated, and V-FEM is executed for plane-strain analysis of doubly curved surfaces, from which global and local responses are evaluated.

summary The distinction between material behavior (mechanics) and material response (electronics) in the framework of responsive building skins has promoted unique design protocols for integrating sensor technologies into material components. Such a distinction results in the implementation of remote sensing devices post the process of material fabrication. Sensors are commonly perceived as electronic add-on patches which initiate mechanical output with response to electrical input. This work seeks to establish a novel approach to the integration of electronics in building skins which prioritizes material selection, behavior and fabrication given a required task, over post-production sensor application. The term “FAB Finding” is proposed to describe an instrumental methodology facilitating the coupling of CNC fabrication processes with material organization and behavior. It offers a design mentality which emphasizes the nature and the effects brought about by the use of specific fabrication processes which are by definition inherent in the design product and its behavior. A light-sensing inflatable skin system is developed as a working prototype demonstrating such an approach.

title Get Real Towards Performance-Driven Computational Geometry

summary In historic design conventions geometry has traditionally promoted descriptive manifestations of form. Beyond the realm of geometry, the concept of performance which may inform such manifestations also carries important potential for design generation. This work explores the relation between geometry and performance from a computational-geometry perspective. It does so by revisiting certain analytical tools offered in most of today's 3-D modelers which support the evaluation of any generated surface geometry specifically curvature and draft angle analysis. It is demonstrated that these tools can be reconstructed with added functionality assigning 3-D geometrical features informed by structural and environmental performance respectively. In the examples illustrated surface thickness (as a function of structural performance) is assigned to curvature values, and transparency (as a function of light performance) is assigned to light analysis values. In a broader scope this work promotes a methodology of performance-informed form generation by means of computational geometry. Vector and tensor math was exploited to reconstruct existing analytical tools adapted to function as design generators.

summary The conception of the architect as form-giver has since historical times dominated the field of architecture. It is precisely this image which has devalued material practice in the distinction between form and matter consistently inherent in architectural discourse. Recent technological developments in the field of design computation, coupled with environmental concerns and philosophical debates have contributed to the shift in focus from form, as the exclusive object of design practice to matter and materials as an alternative approach to the conception of form. Such a shift calls for a reorientation of existing protocols for design generation. Design based upon performance appears to justify and make sensible computational design processes that integrate material properties with structural and environmental constraints. These processes, as demonstrated here, contribute to the elimination of traditional architectural typologies replaced with spatial organization driven by need and comfort. This paper proposes a new approach in design where processes of formgeneration supporting sustainable design solutions are directly informed by structural and environmental constraints. Computational models are developed and implemented that incorporate data-driven form generation. Fabrication tools and technologies are customized to include material properties and behavior. The projects illustrated in this paper are currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art.

summary The formation of non-woven fibre structures generated by the Bombyx mori silkworm is explored as a computational approach for shape and material optimization. Biological case studies are presented and a design approach for the use of silkworms as entities that can “compute” fibrous material organization is given in the context of an architectural design installation. We demonstrate that in the absence of vertical axes the silkworm can spin flat silk patches of variable shape and density. We present experiments suggesting sufficient correlation between topographical surface features, spinning geometry and fibre density. The research represents a scalable approach for optimization-driven fibre-based structural design and suggests a biology-driven strategy for material computation.

summary The paper describes an approach to architectural design education within the tradition of grammatical studies. It exploits certain attributes of computer modelling and computer graphics programs as an environment to convey architectural knowledge. The formal representation of designs and the manipulation of these representations are proposed as architectural knowledge and one of the foundations of design. Computer-based three-dimensional formal analysis of designs is employed as a technique for the acquisition of knowledge of classes of designs. Through formal analysis certain general models of building form are postulated. The classes of building form models in architecture are elaborated, and their relation to the concept of architectural syntax is discussed. The computational significance of building form modelling is considered, and the relevance of formal modelling in design education is discussed.

summary The teaching of architectural design involves the transfer of a broad spectrum of knowledge. This ranges in diversity from the acquisition of skills to those types of domain- distinctive knowledge which are actually employed in the generation of designs. The authors make a broad distinction between instrumental knowledge employed in various stages of design but peripheral to the actual process of generating designs, and conceptual-configurative knowledge which, in fact, makes the generation of designs possible. In the model of the design process in which there is a sequential relationship between the conceptual-formal and physical- material stages of design, this distinction between the instrumental and the conceptual is most marked during the early, or conceptual, stages of design. summary Our research approach which is termed Cognitive Design Media (CDM) demonstrates how the cognitive phenomena of design can be supported in computerized environments. Our current work on the ‘sketch’ project is introduced presented and illustrated. Sketching in design is considered to be one of the significant cognitive phenomena which supports exploration through re-representation in design. Until now, only the medium of hand drawing and sketching has been considered to support these processes. Rather than automating the traditional hand-made sketch, or interpreting sketches in a computer system, we are attempting to employ the computer to support one of the cognitive mechanism of re-representation which underlie the sketch activity.

title Visual Reasoning in Case-Based Design

summary The interest in CBR as a relevant paradigm for design has led to a series of successful AID workshops over the last few years. Most of these workshops were focused on traditional issues and topics in CBR such as indexing, retrieval, and adaptation. Despite the long-term effort to establish the theoretical foundations for CBR in design, we have yet to achieve the promise of this affinity (CBR and Design). Though there is a general consensus of the cognitive significance of CBR to design and general optimism regarding the promise of CBR technologies for the advancement of design systems, we have yet to realize this potential. In order to strengthen the field in design it appears that additional theoretical efforts are needed in the following two directions. First, we must re-consider the complexity of design and design reasoning as it relates to CBR. One possible direction for future exploration is to view CBR as part of the complex, hybrid reasoning processes in design. This can be done by the integration of other significant cognitive aspects of design which are investigated in relevant fields in AI. Visual reasoning is a fundamental attribute of design, and therefor combining these two research areas may provide significant results for the field. The second direction is to investigate the possible integration of CBR paradigms and techniques with existing computational technologies, including CAD, and electronic media. These two subjects are the main objectives of the workshop. The first section of the workshop will focus on Re-formulating Theoretical Foundations for CBR in Design; within this part of the workshop it is proposed that special emphasis be placed upon Visual Reasoning and Case-Based Design The second part of the workshop will discuss the applicative implications of these re-formulations. The workshop aims to bring together researchers who work on visual and case-based reasoning. It aims to provide a forum for intensive interaction among researchers in these areas. We expect that a diverse background of participants (from AI as well as related cognitive and design domains) will lead to a rich and lively exchange of points of view and will contribute to the identification of significant research issues.

summary The conception of design as a sequential process of description and redescription in the development of designs is presented. Re-representational theory (RRH) is introduced and the cognitive mechanisms which enable re-representation in design are explicated. A theory of re-representation and multiple representations in design is proposed. The concept of adaptation developed in CBR is exploited to formalize transformations in the re-representation process. An empirical research was constructed to study the cognitive abilities which underlie the creative phenomena of re-representation in design adaptation. On the basis of the findings of the experiment, a model of design re-representation is developed and presented. The main concepts of the model, multiple representation and re-representation, are shown to provide a powerful basis for the understanding of creative behavior in design.

summary This paper presents a hypothesis about design education that is framed within and derived from cognitive theories of learning. The relevance of design thinking and cognitive approaches to the development of pedagogical approaches in design education is presented and discussed. A conceptual model for design education that emphasizes the acquisition of explicit knowledge of design is proposed. The acquisition of knowledge is achieved through the explication of cognitive structures and strategies of design thinking. The explication process is constructed by exploiting a representational formalism, and a computational medium which supports both the learning process as well as the potential re-use of this knowledge. Finally, an argument is presented that the measure of learning, generally equated with the evaluation of the product of designing, can instead be based upon evaluating learning increments of acquired knowledge.

summary The introduction of the computer into architectural studies has resulted in innovative pedagogical approaches to design education. In recent years we have employed a teaching approach in which the student models the formalization of design knowledge in a computerized environment and experiments with the formal processing of this knowledge in the generation of designs. Interacting with the computer in the generation of designs requires making design knowledge explicit and formalized. Knowledge modeling is an approach to design and education in which the designer models the design thinking involved in the making of the object. In this process appropriate computational technology is essential to support and enhance certain phenomena of reasoning. From the pedagogical point of view such computational design environment appear also to enhance design learning and performance through the capability gained in computer modelling. In this respect, there is an analogous impact on the potential of design knowledge environments which can support design performance in practice. In this paper we consider the Internetas a potential design knowledge environment. The nature of the Net as a medium for the representation, storage and accessing of design knowledge is presented and various research issues are introduced. The potential of this new medium as a resource for design learning, design practice and design collaboration derives from the attributes of the technology. We elaborate on the appropriateness of certain attributes of the medium as a potential design environment. Future possibilities of the Net as a shared design resource are proposed. Considerations of the Net as a collaboratively constructed design resource as well as a medium for collaborative design are introduced.

summary The paper reports on a research program to define the issues and strategies involved in the design of virtual architecture. Issues and categories of virtual architecture are identified and classified. An approach to the design of virtual place is derived from a large body of emerging literature as well as from the analysis of case-studies. We demonstrate and discuss how paradigms of physical design may be applied to support the needs of design for cyber-place. We attempt to define intrinsically digital possibilities for interface design that are not based upon a direct analogy to physical space. The findings in the form of alternative development possibilities and design guidelines may provide a guide to the field of virtual architecture, to its definition, design issues, and potential strategies.
