Bath is a small predominantly Georgian historic city that has been designated a World Heritage Site. Examples are drawn from four kinds of work: the representation of Bathís historic growth (including unbuilt plans), the prediction of the urban design impact of individual development proposals, the study and development of explicit and implicit urban design Çrulesë for the form of existing and new development, and the impact on city form and appearance of policy proposals for urban sustainability.

summary Architects have been opening up onto cyberspace for more than a decade now. In terms of disciplinary issues, at stake is our ability to inhabit this new space as .designers. and not just as spectators. In the mid 90s, two theories engaged in a major confrontation. The first valued the virtual dimension of architectural space (W. J. Mitchell, City of Bits, 1995), the other valued the tectonic dimension and its constructive poiesis (K. Frampton, Studies in Tectonic Culture, 1995). Although divergent in their view of architecture.s role in the future of our technological societies, both theories revealed aspects of our relationship to the contemporary body that were, and today remain, inseparable. Where Mitchell.s book clearly intends to establish cyberspace as a new playground for architects, giving convincing examples of the programmatic mutations of modern spatiality, Kenneth Frampton.s work, Studies in Tectonic Culture, reexamines the constructive culture underlying the modern conception of space. Neither a simple history text nor a collection of technical poetry, this latter work is a manifesto developing a set of materialist ethics for the discipline of architecture. This "rappel à lordre" to resist the increasing dematerialization of architecture closes tentatively with Le Corbusier.s classic metaphor of the acrobat: The architect, he said, must not look for truth in extremes. Rather, he must struggle constantly to maintain balance. .Nobody asked him to do this. Nobody owes him any thanks. He lives in the extraordinary world of the acrobat.. Following Le Corbusier.s advice, and in consideration of current and recurrent tensions between the virtual and the tectonic, what can we say today of such a delicate equilibrium?

summary Drawing from technologies developed for military flight simulation and virtual reality, a system for efficiently modeling and simulating urban environments has been implemented at UCLA. This system combines relatively simple 3-dimensional models (from a traditional CAD standpoint) with aerial photographs and street level video to create a realistic (down to plants, street signs and the graffiti on the walls) model of an urban neighborhood which can then be used for interactive fly and walk-through demonstrations.The Urban Simulator project is more than just the simulation software. It is a methodology which integrates existing systems such as CAD and GIS with visual simulation to facilitate the modeling, display, and evaluation of alternative proposed environments. It can be used to visualize neighborhoods as they currently exist and how they might appear after built intervention occurs. Or, the system can be used to simulate entirely new development.

summary The ABACUS Group has been active for some years in the use of computer graphics and multimedia to represent past, present and future buildings in both urban and rural settings. The three cities discussed during the presentation are Split, in former Yugoslavia - a graphical account of the development of Split from its origin in the Diocletian Palace of the Venetian Empire up to the present day; Edinburgh - a multimedia interface to a large-scale three dimensional computer model of Edinburgh Old Town; and Glasgow - Virtual City developments in the run up to the City of Architecture and Design celebrations in 1999. The presentation concludes with a report on the IMAGEA project - an international initiative to construct an Interactive Multimedia Archive of Great European Architecture.

summary The quality of the built environment depends critically on the concept of sustainability and, in particular, on designs which are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. This paper gives an account of the successful application of computer-based simulations of the physical environment made available to architects through an Energy Design Advisory Service and used parametrically within a research project carried out jointly with a design and build company. It goes on to indicate how emerging multi-media technology can be used to provide an explanation, particularly to those who are technically unsophisticated, of the complexity of the way in which design decisions impact upon the energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of buildings.

summary Visibility plays an important role in perception and use of an urban design, and thus often becomes a target of design analysis. This work presents a fast method of evaluating various visibility-based design characteristics, such as isovists or insolation exploiting the GPU rendering pipeline and compute shaders. The proposed method employs a two-stage algorithm on each point of interest. First, it projects the visible space around a vantage point onto an equirectangular map. Second, it folds the map using a flexibly defined function into a single value that is associated with the vantage point. Being executed on a grid of points in a 3D scene, it can be visualized as a heat map or utilized by another algorithm for further design analysis. The developed system provides nearly real-time analysis tools for an early-stage design process to a broad audience via web services.

summary We question the recent practices of conventional and participatory urban design approaches and offer a middle approach by exploring computational design tools in the design system. On the one hand, the top-down urban planning approaches investigate urban form as a holistic matter which only can be calibrated by urban professionals. These approaches are not able to offer enough information to the end users to predict the urban form. On the other hand, the bottom-up urban design approaches cannot visualise predicted urban scenarios, and most often the design decisions stay as general assumptions. We developed and tested a parametric design platform combines both approaches where all the stakeholders can participate and visualise multiple urban scenarios in real-time feedback. Parametric design along with CIM modelling system has influenced urban designers for a new endeavour in urban design. This paper presents a methodology to generate and visualise urban form. We present a novel decision-making platform that combines city level and local neighbourhood data to aid participatory urban design decisions. The platform allows for stakeholder collaboration and engagement in complex urban design processes.

summary The last three decades have witnessed the explosion of technology and its impact on the architecture discipline which has drastically changed the methods of design. New techniques such as Agent-based modeling (ABM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been widely implemented in architectural and urban design domains, yet the potential integration between these two methods remains arguably unexploited. The investigation in this paper aims to probe the following questions: How can architects and urban designers be informed more comprehensively by melding ABM and VR techniques at the preliminary/conceptual design stage? Which platform is considered more appropriate to facilitate a user-friendly system and reduces the steep learning curve? And what are the potential benefits of this approach in architectural education, particularly for the design studio environment? With those questions, we proposed a prototype in Unity, a multi-platform development tool that originated from the game industry, to simulate and visualize pedestrian behaviors in urban environments with immersive design experience and tested it in a scenario-based case study. This approach has also been further tested in an architectural design studio, demonstrating its technical feasibility as well as the potential contributions to the pedagogy.

summary The logics of agent-based behaviors have found interest in architectural design for their possibility to generate self-organizing geometries. However, the resulting free-form geometries are usually complex and costly to construct as buildings. Recently architects have proposed discrete components to create a cost-effective computational designs. This research explores the possibilities of discretizing agent-based simulations to make their bottom-up behaviors and resulting geometries more easily usable for economic construction. Different types of discretization have been explored. The simulations have been evaluated as a design tool at scales from the urban to the detail. The outcomes at the larger scale provide design possibilities, but with little influence on construction costs. At the smaller scale, the geometric assemblies show good possibilities for an economic design and a feasible construction, by altering, but not compromising, the emergent self-organizing principles that guide the simulations.

summary This paper documents an initial study investigating the integration of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation modeling into wind mitigation design for building structures located in wind hazard prone areas. Some of the basic principles and theoretical concepts of fluid flow and wind pressure as well as their translation into design criteria for structural analysis and design are reviewed, followed by a discussion of a CFD application case study for a simulated hurricane force wind flow over a low rectangular building using the k-epsilon turbulence model. The techniques and parameters for development of the simulation are discussed and some preliminary interpretations of the results are evaluated by comparing its predictions against existing experimental and analytical data, with special attention paid to the American Society of Civil Engineers, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ACSE 7-98 and the Uniform Building Code .

summary The rapid growth of complex contemporary architecture design, contributed by the advance in parametric CAD/CAM software, is accompanied by challenges in the production process; it demands both highly trained workers and technical equipments. This paper reviews current technologies in robotics-aided construction and wearable computers for generic purposes, and proposes the design of a robotic device for construction guidance. It guides the user, the worker, through the assembly process of precision modular constructions, by providing procedural mechanical or haptic assistance in the 3-dimensional positioning of building components. The device is designed to be wearable, portable, and operable as a completely stand-alone system that requires no external infrastructure. A prototype of the device is tested with a mock-up masonry construction experiment, the result of which is reported in this paper, along with discussion for future improvement and application opportunities within the context of highly developed, condensed Japanese urban environments. A greater objective of this paper is to bridge current studies in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and digital fabrication in architecture and promote the potentials of human workers in future construction scenes.

summary This study applies self-organization as a methodology to understand the complex process of city networks caused by interactions between spatial structures and individual behaviors. The agent-based simulations have been conducted to investigate the visible and invisible networks understanding the self-organized aspects of city development processes. To develop optimal future networks providing connectivity and accessibility this study investigates spatial network configurations from internal individual behavior and movement. As results, it was found that the spatial configurations of the agent movement trails match to the current district boundaries and the similar network patterns were seen in various control values of agent behavior settings. This study contributes to searching out the hierarchy of network structures which is an important factor for re-planning of the way system.
