title A tool for a first analysis of architectural facades

summary This work presents a tool for analysing the figurative structure of architectural façades. The procedure begins by singling out the elementary shapes which make up the façade image; it detects and identifies them as "area objects", even if present in combination in virtual or mental form and groups them into classes of equal objects. A second step is the analysis of the inner structure of the classes: equidistant, arithmetical and geometrical sequences, or alternate distances are distinguished. The procedure ends by singling out the symmetries which structure the façade image and displaying them, pointing out their implied hierarchy through a thickness differentiation.

summary The Emperor's New Mind, physicist Roger Penrose's 1989 treatise attacking the foundations of strong artificial intelligence, is crucial for anyone interested in the history of thinking about AI and consciousness. Part survey of modern physics, part exploration of the philosophy of mind, the book is not for casual readers--though it's not overly technical, it rarely pauses to let the reader catch a breath. The overview of relativity and quantum theory, written by a master, is priceless and uncontroversial. The exploration of consciousness and AI, though, is generally considered as resting on shakier ground. Penrose claims that there is an intimate, perhaps unknowable relation between quantum effects and our thinking, and ultimately derives his anti-AI stance from his proposition that some, if not all, of our thinking is non-algorithmic. Of course, these days we believe that there are other avenues to AI than traditional algorithmic programming; while he has been accused of setting up straw robots to knock down, this accusation is unfair. Little was then known about the power of neural networks and behavior-based robotics to simulate (and, some would say, produce) intelligent problem-solving behavior. Whether these tools will lead to strong AI is ultimately a question of belief, not proof, and The Emperor's New Mind offers powerful arguments useful to believer and nonbeliever alike

summary The subject of computer-aided building modeling is often discussed in various contexts, sometimes without clear explanation of what is modelled. Usually modeling refers to 3-dimensional geometric modeling, but nowadays also conceptual modeling and mathematical simulation aspects are more and more evident. Building modeling should though be considered more widely than just plain geometric visualization. This paper establishes one common framework for discussion about different building modeling viewpoints arranging discipline viewpoints, approach methods, existing standards and application tools within one context. Although several viewpoints are declared conceptual building modeling is regarded the main emphasis of this paper, since it definitely will be one of the key issues in developing methods and tools for computer integrated construction (CIC) in the future.

summary This approach sees traditional video endoscopy and computer-based modeling techniques as two methods whose combination gives advantages for both. Endoscopy and computer based tools are not alternative nor rival techniques. New digital visualization possibilities are available within the context of CAD- systems. High-end and more expensive visualization has gained influence from commercial advertizing and also from entertainment industry. Traditional endoscope video has longer historical background and it’s roots are in model photography, model-based simulations and video techniques. The main focus of this paper is to describe Tampere architectural department’s computer based visualization facilities briefly with two cases studies. Our status and resources in traditional simulation have been rather good since mid 70’s, and now when also the basic digital facilities (word processing & CAD) exist, it will be our next challenge to deepen and develop the variety of available simulation methods, equipment – and naturally knowledge in combining them.

summary A brief historical analysis followed by some possible future scenarios The influence of CAD – nowadays more correctly stated with CAAD meaning architectural CAD – has been more and more evident in the university level architectural education. The development process of architectural CAD-courses and wider CAD-curriculums could, at least in Scandinavian countries, be described and simplified with a couple of development steps analyzed here, to give the starting point. And since the process of educational evolution will naturally keep on developing in the future also, some possible future paths concerning both CAD-equipment, CAAD-education and more traditional architectural curriculumns, are described here after the historical analysis. Following commonly used futures studies methods, my intent is not to predict the future, but to give several probable future choices, of which some might come true, and some might not. Some of the paths are evident, some are ideal and some may cause also negative effects. The future of architectural education and CAAD as part of it will certainly appear somehow, very possibly somewhere in the middle of these presented paths. The aim of this presentation is to give the architectural education community – the schools and faculty – a wide perspective view to analyze and plan their local course structures also for the future. The future possibilities are presented here, so that the schools can prepare for the forecoming future changes in their workin environment. Finally, the future will appear the way we will create it.

summary This work aims to investigate the applicability of 2D and 3D isovists, as well as Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA), for evaluating urban vulnerability to crime. The methodology is based on correlations between number of crime occurrences and measurements of 2D and 3D isovists, and mean values of visual integration (VGA). The 2D isovists were produced through DeCoding Spaces Toolbox for Grasshopper and the 3D isovists were generated by using algorithms within Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. VGA maps were elaborated within DepthmapX. For this study, were selected nine street segments of Boa Viagem, located in Recife-PE, a neighbourhood which is known for high rates of robberies. Although the number of samples is reduced, the results suggest that criminals prefer much more visually integrated spaces with low occlusivity and fewer spatial cavities.

summary This work proposes the studies of Virtual Reality (VR) as a potential system for developing methodologies for projects in IOS – Information and Orientation Systems for environmental graphics of enclosed public places, wherein the social complexity is demanded by and for different social levels. Indeed, it embraces the studies of the icon visual retraction between the 3D environments to the 2D reality, considering the computer media as a bi dimensional support. This method allows implementing experiences in sensorial, accuracy and analysis of ergonomics on IOS projects.

summary This article aims to present the development of a tool to analyze sunlight availability for vertical farming in buildings facades. For the elaboration of this support system, a resource-based visual programming language was used, where indicators of solar radiation, Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) and Daily Light Integral (DLI) make up the inputs and outputs. To validate the developed system, an analysis of a residential area, located in the city of Joao Pessoa - Paraíba, was proposed. After the simulation, it was possible to observe the usability and effectiveness of the tool for analyzing of sunlight availability in urban contexts. Moreover, the achieving results can be used to provide planners with guidelines that encourage the development of public policies and legislative instruments aimed at vertical agriculture in facades.

summary Intelligent objects for daily use offer greater advantages than electromechanical products. However, they need a user whose life is more methodical, programmed and predictable. As de number of services offered in such products increase, their restrictions in their flexibility of use arise. Finally, users adapt themselves to habits that these objects suggest (for better) or prescribe (for worse). However, a paradox exists. What is controversial for a standard user: the increasing passivity justified in the eternal pursuit of comfort, for a disabled person means achieving independence and autonomy. In order to accomplish the revolutionary equity that computer science claims, the possibility of being excluded for economic reasons should not exist. If not, it will increase the fracture between coexistent realities in the same territory. For these reasons, assuming the risk of being considered naive and idealist, we believe that in order to build a better future it is necessary to promote policies that guarantee the access to new technologies for people with low economic means. Together with the consciousness users gain -related to product selection-, it would break the premature discouragement that the markets try to impose, resigning us to an unjustified idea of weakness and submission.

summary The authors introduce the concept of a Pixel Stream Editor. This forms the basis for an interactive synthesizer for designing highly realistic Computer Generated Imagery. The designer works in an interactive Very High Level programming environment which provides a very fast concept/implement/view iteration cycle. Naturalistic visual complexity is built up by composition of non-linear functions, as opposed to the more conventional texture mapping or growth model algorithms. Powerful primitives are included for creating controlled stochastic effects. The concept of 'solid texture' to the field of CGI is introduced. The authors have used this system to create very convincing representations of clouds, fire, water, stars, marble, wood, rock, soap films and crystals. The algorithms created with this paradigm are generally extremely fast, highly realistic, and asynchronously parallelizable at the pixel level

summary The focus of this article is the exploration of landscape and the question of representation, more specifically how landscape principles can be represented through computation. It is a quest for essential qualities, through an application of philosophical questioning, and a response to a human perception of reality. Reality, as an invention of the human mind, is often thought of as a set of accepted conventions and constructs. Such a reality has an inherent dependency upon cognition where spatial and temporal principles may be defined within the natural and built environment, and further embraced within a cultural context. However, there also exist rules or relations that are neither invented nor formulated by the participants understanding. In effect these relations may not have been effectively articulated, a result perhaps of unfamiliar cues. Therefore, to the participant, these relations reside in the realm of the unknown or even the mystic. The aesthetic often resides in the realm of the mystic. The discovery of the aesthetic, is often an experience that comes from encountering physical and essential beauty where it has been produced through unconscious relations, perceived, yet transcending human understanding. The aspects of space and time, spatial and temporal properties and relations of things and events, are generally accepted conventions. Yet, the existence of a time order, is often not perceived. An understanding of spatial temporal properties may involve a temporal detachment from convention, allowing the release of previously unknown patterns and relations. Virtual realities are well constructed simulations of our environments, yet they may lack the embedded essential qualities of place. Virtual reality should transcend human perception and traditional modes of understanding, and most importantly our limited notions of the temporal nature of our environment. A desire to reach beyond the limits of perceived time order, may take us beyond existing sets of cultural values, and lead to the realization of new spatial/temporal conventions with the assistance of the computer.

summary The dynamics of COVID-19 spread have been studied from an epidemiological perspective, at city, country, and global scales (Rabajante, 2020, Ma, 2020, and Giuliani et al., 2020), although after two years of the pandemic we know that viruses spread mostly through built environments. This study is part of the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 spread in buildings research (Gomez, Hadi, and Kemenova et al., 2020 and 2021), which proposes a multidimensional model that integrates spatial configurations, temporal use of spaces, and virus characteristics into one multidimensional model. This paper presents a specific branch of this model that analyzes the behavioral parameters, such as vaccination, masking, and mRNA booster rates, and compares them to reducing room occupancy. We focused on human behavior, specifically human interactions within six feet. We utilized the multipurpose simulation software, AnyLogic, to quantify individual exposure to the virus, in the high school building by Perkins and Will. The results show how the most effective solution, reducing the occupancy rates or redesigning layouts, being the most impractical one, is as effective as 80% of the population getting a third boost.
