summary Information is everywhere. We are flooded by information and one can observe peoples problems handling the amount of information. The relational table as the mean to present information as well as simple html pages are having their obvious depts. Therefore, people are looking into three-dimensional representations and entire virtual environments to visualize data contents. Within this papers it is proposed to visualize information and information structures in a dynamic fashion. Therefore, we will have a look at some principles of dynamic representations as well as the metaphors and methods used to enables dynamic representations. With Autonomous Objects in Sculptor and inforMotion two examples are implemented in our research projects using dynamic data visualization.

summary HOPLA (Home Planner) is a computer-aided design system aimed at simplifying customization of house design. It merges aspects of user-centered computer-aided design with machine-centered computerized design, as defined by Negroponte in The Architecture Machine. The tool was developed to fulfill mass-customization principles without compromising mass production efficiency and to support users' participation in design processes to help them formulate expectations and search for design solutions. We describe the details of the system development and its possible use in the process of mass-customization and participatory design of single-family houses. The system consists of two core elements: an algorithm based on a generic grammar responsible for generating design solutions in relation to user input, and a Tangible User Interface allowing users to introduce data and to control the process in an intuitive way. The main challenge in developing the system was to synchronize the freedom of user's design decisions with the rigor of machine's verification process.

summary This research makes use of a cognitive study to explore a mechanism for associating ideas in a brainstorming session. Firstly, we propose a linking model integrating three principles of idea association (similarity, contrast and contiguity) with two processes of case-based reasoning (retrieval and adaptation). For identifying the types and mechanisms of linkages within the linking model, a design experiment and its protocol analysis was conducted. Finally, a framework for case-based reasoning to support idea association called Dynamic Idea-Maps (DIM) is proposed, and its components and mechanisms are elucidated.

summary Idea association is an important behavior to generate diverse ideas during brainstorming. Through three linking principles (similarity, contrast and contiguity), idea association involves a dynamic linking process between ideas and design cases. Based on the knowledge representation issue-concept-form proposed by Oxman (1993), three interactive patterns between ideas and design cases are investigated. Finally, some computational mechanisms for supporting the linkage of idea association are discussed.

summary Recent urban transformations worldwide consequentially lead to the numerous environmental problems that have to be solved bycomplex structure of social interest groups which have to be included in that process. This demands initiated requisitioning andmodification of concepts and methodologies of planning and managing urban development. At this moment there are differentmodels used in world wide practice, but main bases of new methods and techniques are the same. Leaving the idea of possibility ofconstituting the universal urban planning model lead to very productive results in developing the disciplinary methodologies. Processof transformation of traditional comprehensive urban planning model to integrated procedural pluralistic model (based on sustainabledevelopment principles) is something that can be underlined as a main characteristic of disciplinary development. The questions ofdecision making mechanisms and plans implementation are put in axes of conceptual and methodological considerations. Urbanplanning loses the classic form of making the multi level comprehensive urban plans with exact spatial and time horizon. It means, ingeneral that planning and managing of urban development is aiming to be realistic, decentralized, strategic and problem oriented,arbitrary, not instructive, but understood as a efficient and effective process.Operational support to the this kind of approach are Decision Support IT tools, such as GIS - Geographical Information Systems orES -Expert Systems. Usability of IT tools is based on their capability to perform fast and complicated processing of spatial data andon their flexibility towards specific real problems which are to be solved. In order to use maximum of capabilities of these tools inpractice problem solving it is necessary to adjust their structure and usage to the: - actual conditions of socioeconomic of the contextin which urban development planning and management is performed, - practical demands that managing of urban development has tofore fill, - all participants in urban management process, - institutional mechanisms and procedures.

We make suggestions how architects can design environments that are more flexible and dynamic. These environments are adapted to our changing social and cultural trends. Developments in media and communication technologies allow extending the real world to a so called Tele Reality. These environments will have a certain degree of intelligence provided via computer performance. Humans will be able to receive information form anywhere and at anytime. summary This paper presents a comprehensive project-based research investigation that uses both drawing and modeling to challenge conventional design space. Situated at the University of Kentucky-College of Design Applied Computation Center (CoDACC) in Lexington, KY, this independent undergraduate research project reveals an immersive framework that develops, evaluates, and assesses both graphic and three-dimensional information at full scale. This research provides a framework that seamlessly negotiates analog and digital means of communication and prototyping. This paper outlines the micro-hybrid design process to frame topics germane to today's increasingly complex built environment. The paper also includes the micro-hybrid decision-making matrix and discusses the evaluation of the produced artifacts. The research demonstrates how the micro-hybrid process can reveal both the craft and consequences related to design experimentation and construction. Further, the micro-hybrid process has been shown to deepen a student's understanding of the composition of materials and a student's awareness of forces and structural loads, which in turn has produced a deeper appreciation for the principles of structures and an improved mastery of manufacturing jointing details.

However, its typical construction process still utilizes wasteful formwork. summary The paper explores the analogies between Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Feng-Shui by undertaking an analysis of natural ventilation in Jiangmen city, Southern China. Feng-Shui has been used to inform the orientation, layout, and design of buildings in China for thousands of years. The research questions if these concepts are still valid for contemporary building design. Noting that computational simulation methods such as CFD allow architects to analyse the natural ventilation of buildings, this paper provides a novel study that examines if Feng-Shui principles can be reconciled against contemporary design processes. The research simulates 'community', 'block', and 'single courtyard' via CFD study to confirm the scientifically measurable concepts of Feng-Shui have concerning natural ventilation. We conclude that Feng-Shui concepts enhance natural ventilation and subsequently makes a positive contribution to sustainable building and design.

summary Windows in buildings must respond to five major issues – daylight, sunshine, view, ventilation and sound. Each of these processes in its own way can be critical to the synthesis of a successful architectural design. All factors except view are engineering criteria that can be evaluated by some mathematical formulae provided there is sufficient information for the calculations. In contrast view” being a qualitative entity has difficulty in being measured by using conventional mathematical tools but it is probably the major factor that leads to the satisfaction and comfort of the users inside the building enclosure. This paper introduces a new approach in analyzing views by the use of computers. One of the advantages of this analysis process is that the psychological aspects are less biased in the end product. This paper explains the methodologies, theories and principles underlying these modeling and analyzing tools.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for generating and evaluating urban morphologies guided by Transit-Oriented Development principles. Transit- Oriented Development is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result in optimized infrastructure provision and energy-efficient low- carbon districts. This article presents algorithmic experiments for the optimization of a rapid transit district, through its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate Transit-Oriented Development modeling. The main findings of this study highlight that the combination of Transit-Oriented Development and algorithmic–parametric tools has the potential to significantly contribute to a process of responsible planning and, ultimately, to mitigate global warming.

summary Many different types of algorithms have been associated to gain complex shapes. They give rise to a large set of unusual forms, through calculations based on computational geometries, self-organizing systems, rule-based systems, and optimization, often still assembled in morphogenesis principles. Many of these discoveries mimic physical, chemical, and even behavioral principles at the edge of this code-translated knowledge. Thus, any new form, the result of this exploratory perspective, can mean some progress. If the understanding of specific algorithmic characteristics has validity (for precise programming), generic concepts are also important for simplifying procedures and presenting general concepts of the result.

summary Inflatable structures made of flat film materials have an advantage of low cost, lightweight and rapid deployment, but the variation of their forms is relatively limited, and it is a challenge to produce pneumatic deformations. This paper proposes a designing and manufacturing process of inflatable structures which are made of flat film materials and are able to perform dynamic movements. The process includes steps in which a target 3D surface is produced through programmed 2D paths heat-sealed on flat films of different thickness, leading to a structure composed of air chambers. A parametric modelling procedure and associated principles are developed for the relationship between the forms of a flat-film-based inflatable structure and the heat sealing patterns on the film. A system of double-layer air chambers was designed to control the direction of bending movements. In addition, the form variation of a designed inflatable structure can be achieved by a parametric design process described in this paper.

summary In 1845 Edgar Allan Poe wrote the poem “The Raven”, an act full of poetry, love, passion, mourning, melancholia and death. In his essay “The Theory of Composition” which was published in 1846 Poe proved that the poem is based on an accurate mathematical description. Not only in literature are structures present that are based on mathematics. In the work of famous musicians, artists or architects like Bach, Escher or Palladio it is evident that the beauty and clarity of their work as well as its traceability has often been reached through the use of intrinsic mathematic coherences. If suchlike structures could be described within architecture, their mathematical abstraction could supplement “The Theory of Composition” of a building. This research focuses on an approach to describe layout principles of existing buildings in the form of mathematical rules. Provided that “design” is in principle a combinatorial problem, i.e. a constraint-based search for an overall optimal solution of a design problem, two exemplary methods will be described to apply new utilizations to existing buildings through the use of these rules.

summary This paper considers the problem of creative design, and in particular the role of a priori knowledge or "prototypes" in the design process. A design problem is characterised as one in which both the objectives and the means available for achieving these objectives are (of necessity) initially only poorly defined. Some observations concerning the nature of design process based on this characterisation are presented, and a model of the design process as a knowledge-based exploration task described. The role of prototypes in organising this knowledge is examined, and the widely accepted view that prototypes can form the principle source of knowledge for creativity in design is challenged. In a final section we outline the structural principles of a representation scheme which aims to overcome of these difficulties and describe a design support system which uses this scheme to support the design process.
