summary The use of technology instigates student interest. Thus, the possibilities offered by the technologies should be presented to students during their professional training. This paper aims to propose to teachers a change in the approach of 'geometry' contents through the use of BIM, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Rapid Prototyping and Digital Fabrication. The methodology chosen was Systematic Review of Literature and literature review without meta-analysis. It presents an overview of the applicability of such technologies in teaching, as well as possibilities little explored. The results indicate that 'geometry' teaching can benefit from the great potential offered by Information and Communication Technologies.

summary An experiment is reported that combines the use of a heuristic search and a tree systems inference technique to induce context-free relational grammars that generate patterns in the style embodied in a sample set. This is achieved by searching for concise structural representations of each pattern in a sample set and discovering regularities in their tree systems representation. summary In building design practice, especially in the preliminary stages, multi-disciplinarity is often ignored, due to the intrinsic characteristics of the design process, the features of design education, or lack of appropriate tools, resulting in a limited design vocabulary. This paper investigates the development of a digital multi-media database of building structures, operating as a supporting tool in preliminary structural design in order to enrich and justify design decisions. The proposed database responds to the need of bridging the gap between systematic, yet abstract, theoretical analytical approach of structural systems and descriptive, visual, yet fragmented, representations of architectural forms, through a highly visual, yet thoroughly systematic, approach based on case-studies.

title Digital media impact on the knowledge building and retrieving capability of architects

summary The transition of architecture from the two dimensional nature to the three dimensional nature, which results from the use of digital media, generates deep inconformity between the traditional methods of architectural creation and the novel nature of architectural objects. Therefore, there is a need to look at how digital media can impact the design capabilities of architects. This research aims at identifying the impact of digital media on the Knowledge Building and Retrieving capability, through defining this capability and classifying the basic approaches of digital media used in the design process. Depending on both primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of the previous research), the results of this study have substantiated the observation that there has been positive impact of various media settings (manual and digital) on the Knowledge Building and Retrieving capability of architects.

title Modelling Behaviour of Configurable VR Applications

summary Creation of complex behaviour-rich and meaningful content is one of the main difficulties that currently limit wide use of virtual reality technologies in everyday applications. To enable widespread use of VR applications new methods of content creation must be developed. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to designing behaviour-rich virtual reality applications, called Flex-VR. The approach enables building configurable VR applications, in which content can be easily created and modified by domain experts or even common users without knowledge about VR design and computer programming. The VR content is configured from reusable programmable content elements, called VR-Beans. Appearance and behaviour of the VR-Beans are controlled by scripts programmed in a novel high-level language, called VR-BML (Behaviour Modelling Language). The language enables specification of generic behaviours of objects that can be dynamically composed into virtual scenes. The paper introduces the Flex-VR component and content models, describes the VR-BML language and provides an example of a Flex-VR application in the cultural heritage domain.

From the recorded user experience system development, implementation, performance in use and effects upon design practice are assessed. Aspects of user technique are developed. The range of factors required in the development of an end user view of design systems also identified. An evaluation of the use of OXSYS/BDS on Milton Keynes DGH is presented together with an assessment of CAD use (both BDS and GDS) on health building projects at Oxford RHA. summary This article presents a study that addresses the importance of indoor air quality. The research aimed to understand how the use of specific plants can enhance air quality in work environments. The methodology involves a prototype with two sensors to measure CO2 concentration in a space without natural and mechanical ventilation, considering the use of plants for air purification. The results demonstrate the variation in CO2 levels with and without the presence of plants and occupants. While a reduction in CO2 levels was observed with the use of plants, under high occupancy, the vegetation wasn't sufficient to maintain recommended levels. The conclusion emphasizes the need for sensor calibration, as well as the proportional relationship between CO2 accumulation in the environment and the quantity of plants required to uphold air quality.

summary In a simple communication model we must talk about the understanding between participants. This is the result of a continuing connection and a dialog of agreements and disagreements in order to arrive at sharing an idea. However, society today is in an evolutionary lapse at an accelerated pace that interjects itself in this process. It is here where social forces distend and generate important ruptures between generations and individuals that fight to prevail or impose new languages and lifestyles. Today's society has become a visual society whose effect has been reinforced through technology in the devices that we use on a daily basis. The daily use of technology and its new languages has marked a disconnection between individuals that must be closed by using a new acculturation and teaching models. Disconnection is a omnipresent modern phenomenon that can be felt as the main effect in what specialists call the digital gap. This gap not only separates generations, but also ideologies with respect to the form in which we perceive, transmit and teach in our society today. This disconnection can be easily understood through a school system that has been designed for a manufacturing and agricultural world. However, many sectors within our society have been in state of constant change and evolution. This situation generates many opportunities where an agile society is required in response to these new local and global challenges. The students of today have, for example, multi-tasking abilities that better assimilate these changes. The researchers, Ian Jukes and Anita Dosaj refer to this disconnection as the result of poor communication between digital natives (our present-day students) and digital immigrants (many present-day adults). This phenomenon results in the fact that parents and educators speak the digital dialect as a second language, and because of that are lacking in their models of communication. For example, digital natives prefer a variety of sources with rapid access, while the digital immigrants prefer slower, more controlled sources that are limited and regulated. Nowadays, our educational or production activities in which we find ourselves immersed on a daily basis cause us to participate in a wide range of processes of production, dissemination and analysis of visual forms as part of our final product or service. Much of the work that we elaborate in movies, video and photography explore meaning, perception and communication in context as well as anthropological and ethnographic themes. Using this framework for our society today, the importance of the search for the promotion of the study of visual representation and the media for the greatest development and generation of benefits is brought to the fore. Through the use of images we can describe, analyze, communicate and interpret human behavior. All these settings, full of digital disconnections and reencounters, impact on all the visual aspects of culture, including art, architecture and material objects, influencing the bodily expressions of human beings. We have created a visual society when we put emphasis on the meaning and interpretation of all we receive through our visual sense. Wherever we look, we find objects that have been modified beyond their primary function to communicate messages. In this ecosystem we are consumers and suppliers. The communication and research needed to achieve reconnection, as well as the creation of new forms of production and visual understanding, are the themes on which the works contained in this edition are centered.

summary In contrast to reductionist investigating of interrelation between emotion and architecture, we have proposed a new concept for creating an adaptive architecture system that employs biosensors and virtual reality (VR). We have generated a dynamic audio-visual Virtual Environment (VE) that has the potential of manipulating the emotional arousal level of the users measured via electrodermal activity (EDA) of skin. Much like the second-order cybernetics system, our simulations have actuators, sensors, and an adaptation mechanism, whereby participant's real-time biofeedback is interpreted and loops back into the simulation to moderate the user experience. The results of our preliminary test show that our system is capable of manipulating the emotional arousal level of the participants by using its dynamic VE.

It is seen thattransformation of the image through neuronalprocessing yields (i) more evenly balanced levels ofluminosity and (ii) a more ‘subjective’ rendering of theenvironment than what was photographed with thedigital camera.The CCD (charge coupled device) –based digital camera reveals its limitation as a linearrecording device that does not have a balanceddynamic range.The neuronal processing of the imageadds non-linearity and a balanced range to theluminosity levels in the image, rendering it closer to a‘subjective’ perception of the scene.

summary This paper shows a design and building application of an innovative structure concept which is developed by the authors. The long-span shell structure (8m*10m*2.5m) built with 1.5mm thin aluminum sheets demonstrates the possibility to apply bending-active structures with flexible thin sheet material in shell structures to enhance the global and local stiffness. The structure is mainly originated from the curved-crease-folding technique which enhances the structural stiffness by introducing curvature to the surfaces. The Y-shape structural elements define the basic geometrical rules and find its global double-curved geometry via the folding of the three lateral ribs. The full-scale prototype and its design and fabrication techniques show a design framework of the structure from its form-finding, surface optimization, robotic simulated fabrication to the final full-scale assembly. As a pioneer pavilion in a research workshop, students' design with diverse forms also show the widely possible application of this structural concept.

summary The main pedestrian entrance of the building site has a direct influence on the use of the buildings, so the selection of the main pedestrian entrance is very important in the process of architectural design. The correct selection of the main pedestrian entrance of building site depends on the experience of designers and environment data collected by designers, the process is time consuming and inefficient, especially when the building site located in complex urban environment. In order to improve the efficiency of design process, we used online map to collect museums information in China as training samples, and constructing artificial neural networks to predict the direction of the main pedestrian entrance. After the training, we get the prediction model with 79% prediction accuracy. Although the accuracy still need to be improved, it creates a new approach to analysis the main pedestrian entrance of the site and worth further researching.

summary The delivery of a successful project demands high levels of collaboration across an expanded design team, which now includes consultants, fabricators and contractors as well as architects and engineers. The pace of development in design technology has been very rapid during the last few years and there are now many software products which offer high levels of sophistication. Most provide associative and parametric modelling strategies, which can be further enhanced and extended by the use of scripting languages. Designers are becoming tool-builders while fabricators are becoming digital craftsmen. With the advent of fast efficient drawing extraction the industry is at last making determined steps towards a model-driven process. However there is no integrated platform which supports the free exchange of ideas, combined with the evaluation of performance, experimentation with production techniques and the evolution of project-specific workflows. In education the design schools have been quick to recognise the potential of the new design technology. This has led to a rapid expansion in course curricula that now offer many new specialisations, most of which also need to be under-pinned by a good grounding in descriptive geometry, mathematics and physics. The architect as a generalist, who coordinates the work of specialists, is being challenged by an increasing breadth of technical studies that require more than just a superficial depth of understanding. In practice the gulf is widening even more rapidly. New graduates, who often have spectacular expertise in modelling and fluency in scripting languages, do not yet have the design and construction experience necessary to direct their efforts to best effect. On the other hand people running project teams do not have the technical background to understand the potential of the skills and resources that are available. Today there is no longer the continuity that used to derive from apprenticeship. As we experiment we find that tools based on new ideas and techniques can radically change workflow – but fear of the unknown can provoke resistance. So the problems we face in harnessing the new technology are as much social and cultural as they are technical. The presentation will focus on developing attitudes towards tool-building with the aim of integrating design, analysis and production. This is part of a continual and quite gradual process, which requires the ability to play interpretive roles that help to bring about cultural change. Examples will be shown from the work of the Specialist Modelling Group at Foster+Partners who now have tenyears experience in deploying design technology in an environment where research is intensely project driven.

title Curved surface form-finding with self-shaping perforated plates

summary Self-shaping systems offer a promising approach for making complex 3D geometries from the material-driven transformation of 2D sheets. However, current research development of such systems is focused on small-scale applications. This study proposes a self-shaping composite for generation of larger-scale curved surfaces suitable for spatial structures. The composite arises from the novel combination of a perforated plate passive layer and a heat-shrinkable active layer. Experimental investigations are undertaken to assess the influence of perforation parameters of the passive layer over the degree of curvature generated in the self-shaping composite system. A 3D scanner and parametric curvature evaluation tool were used to extract and analyse the fabricated surface curvatures. Three key deformation characteristics were identified: the generated surface is cylindrical with dominant curvature in the x-direction; curvature is approximately uniform across the surface width and length; and curvature is strongly influenced by perforation bridge and strap length parameters. Results of this study support the application of self-shaping curved surfaces for customizable discrete structure parts.

title Generative Polymodal Music Process

summary We present underlying ideas used to develop an Algorithmic Composition software named KYKLOS. It was designed to generate music based on generalised musical scales and modes. It is an interactive sonic device to be applied in composition as well in performance. The sonic output of the whole process can be described as generalised polymodal music since “synthetic scales” are generated by the algorithm. This environment can be used in a Computer Assisted Composition manner in order to generate MIDI files. On the other hand, it can equally be used as a performance environment in which a dynamic change of parameters enables a real time control of the sonic process. Recently, we advocated that several mathematical applications in Computer Music can be understood as Sound Functors [1]. In extension, we describe here a sound functor used to model scales and modes. As can be verified, part of early investigations on mathematical structures in music studied musical scales and modes using Combinatorics, Fibonacci Series and Golden Mean in order to understand compositional processes which use modal concepts. Using the Functor definition it is possible to enumerate n-scales as a sequence of integers. Each value in that sequence gives the distance (in half tones) between two consecutive tones. For example, the sequence 3:2:2:3 is interpreted as a pentatonic scale C-Eb-F-G-Bb, and as defined above it is a C mode. So, if we apply cyclical permutations, (n-1)-sequences of numbers should be interpreted as n-modes of tones. Our algorithmic implementation is described briefly. A n-mode is defined as an array with n-1 integers [a1, a2, ...an-1]. Each array generated at k-th step can be read as a number a1a2a3 ....an-1 in decimal representation, where ai is a integer between 1 and 9. The rules to implement the algorithm are the following:1) V0 = (1, 1, 1, 1 ......,1) (initial n-mode)2) ? ai ? 11 with i= 1, 2...n-1 (octave range constraint)3) Vk = (a1a2a3 ...an-1)(k) < (b1b2b3 ...bn-1)(k+1) = Vk+1 where aj ?bj , 1? j ? n-1.4) Vmax = (13 – n, 1, 1, ...,1)In this paper we start with a theoretical view and an introduction on the algorithmic mechanism used. Further, we present a concept of man ? machine interaction used to create the composition environment. We also describe the compositional graphic interface developed and general functions of the system. Finally there is a set of music examples generated by KYKLOS as MIDI files.
