summary In this paper, we introduce a technique by which the internal material properties of an object can be optimised at a microstructural level (5x10-5m) to counteract the forces that are applied to it. These can then be fabricated using the rapid prototyping method of stere­olithography. The proposed technique is analogous to principles of mass customization and takes advantage of a flexible module to cre­ate complex structures in a manner that is computationally efficient and effective. The process is two-staged, in which a genetic algorithm evolves the topology of the microstructure and a second algorithm incorporating Finite Element Analysis then optimises the geometry. The examples shown are designed specifically for the fabrication tech­nique, but the method and general principles are applicable to struc­tural problems at any scale.

title Automated Representation of Style by Feature Space Archetypes: Distinguishing Spatial Styles from Generative Rules

summary Style is a broad term that could potentially refer to any features of a work, as well as a fluid concept that is subject to change and disagreement, yet approaches to representing it too often seek either a pre-defined set of generative rules or list of measurable features. Instead, a general and flexible method of retrospectively and automatically representing style is proposed based on the idea of an archetype, to which real designs can be compared, and tested with examples of architectural plans. Unlike a fixed, symbolic representation, both the measurements of features that define a style and the selection of those features themselves can be performed by the machine, making it able to generalise a definition automatically from a set of examples. This process is implemented in analysis, and coupled with a generative algorithm to produce plans in a learned style.

summary This paper presents an experimental approach that examines human response to three virtual representations (sketchy line, non-photorealistic and near-photorealistic) of three similar architectural schemes (in terms of concept, context and scale) within a non-immersive large-screen projected virtual environment. Participant response is recorded utilising the factors of detail, spatial understanding, character and presence. By comparing data it should be possible to draw conclusions about aspects particular to non-immersive Virtual Reality (VR) activity as a means of architectural representation.

summary This paper presents a case study for the production of retroreflective ceiling treatment in an open work environment. In this setting with multiple talkers, speech distraction can be a significant cause of dissatisfaction and loss of productivity. Ceiling treatment in open plan work environments can provide an important way of ameliorating distraction from unattended speech, and rather than absorbing the sound at the ceiling, this paper examines the possibility of reflecting sound back to the source. Computational design and digital fabrication are integrated in this research for a site-specific deployment of the ceiling treatment and physical testing of prototypes in an acoustics laboratory. The contemporary possibilities that open up with new technologies to understand and resurrect faceted geometries and potentially vary historical precedents via new manufacturing techniques are demonstrated in these novel acoustic reflective ceilings that reflect sound back to their original source.

summary This paper examines faceted tessellations in an acoustic vault ceiling typology for the enhancement of human speech comfort in multi-listener environments. Geometric modelling explores simulated results for various tessellation arrangements within the overall segmentation of a global ceiling geometry. Where pattern-based design for acoustic surfaces often overlooks the optimisation of vault typologies, the tests demonstrated in this research seek a trade-off between acoustic properties and faceted detailing. This involves the performance-based design of micro joint topologies and ruled-surface geometries, and a macro-analysis of the vaulted surface for acoustic studies embedded into this workflow, using Pachyderm software.

summary This paper contributes to a new way of bringing the human physically into the in-situ environment and utilizing mapping methods of the actual sonic experience, which current acoustic studies and other environmental studies are lacking in their reliance on graphical representations. An entire era has been dominated by a visual communication of the sonic environment, yet sonic studies are not primarily dependant on visual experience. The paper reviews the possibilities of current methods of representation of the sonic experience. Representation, being crucial in the layperson’s perceptive awareness of key features of the environment can benefit from increased levels of listening methods. This includes mapping the qualities of information that reveal the environment.

summary Simultaneous interdisciplinary architectural design from the very start of a project faces challenges in properly sharing information across disciplines. This research developed a method and related digital tool to improve collaborative design and aimed at making selected information to be shared faster and more transparently. The method consists of developing alternative parametric solutions for different parts of the design in such a way that crucial parameters form a link between these parts. The digital tool has been developed for Grasshopper and permits synchronic (real-time over the Internet) and a-synchronic sharing of these parameters. The design alternatives are evaluated with specific criteria, pros and cons in an Internet Forum and discussed via a video-conferencing tool. Decisions are then taken in a collaborative manner through voting. The paper describes the method based on a case study.

summary New lighting technologies may fulfill a need for holistic design methods by offering opportunities for both architects and engineers to apply methods and knowledge from media technology that combine daylight and interactive light, in order to complement and deepen an understanding of context. The framework combines daylight and interactive light and includes human needs analysis, spatial understanding, qualitative analysis, qualitative tests and visual assessments. A transdisciplinary model termed the "Architectural Experiment" is applied in a specific case by combining serial, parallel and iterative processes which include contextual analysis, architectural design, simulation, C++ programming, implementation of the dynamic smart-film diffuser, programming of voltage ranges on Arduino boards, rapid prototype construction and lighting technology.

summary This paper discusses Augmented Reality (AR) as means to interact with information regarding infrastructure projects before, under and after construction. For that purpose, two different prototypes were developed using Apples ARKit and Unity's game design platform and tested on two use cases. However, the main focus of this paper is interacting with infrastructure information through AR rather than researching core AR technology. We learned that using AR under the constructing phase with subsurface utilities is still facing several difficulties. Especially when it comes to accessing and interacting with information in a changing construction environment. These difficulties will be discussed and also the challenges regarding information flow between civil engineering and AR software.

summary This paper describes a work about coordination of concurrent engineering in the building construction and design. More particularly it describes the coordination of project teams which are heterogeneous and short-lived. The French context of the building trade is at present characterized by an increase of the quality requirements and by a reduction of the conception and realization delays. This induces the building sector to look for new modes of cooperation as they already exist in industry and services. With a few exceptions, the concurrent engineering tools taken from these sectors are not used in building projects. We make the assumption that the lack of use of these tools is due to the non-fitting of the common existing tools to the specificities of our sector. The solution we propose give a relational vision of the cooperation and the interactions existing during the processes of conception-construction in architectural works. Our first interest point concerns the representation of the actors, the documents and the assignments as a relational network and not as a hierarchical tree, mostly used in the groupware tools. In a second point, we use this relational network to produce a graphic and dynamic representation of the projects. The goal of this method is to reinforce the co-operation and the group awareness by supplying to the actors a good vision of the project evolution in order to increase the conception quality.

summary The architectural conception is a particular cooperation situation. One characteristic of this cooperation is a “mutual prescription” between actors through a specific relational organization. Then each actor keeps up specific relations with others people (designers, project managers,…) but also with documents and activities. The representation of such network, which characterizes each project, is the one of the objectives of the “Relational model”. The existing groupware tools can not be directly used in the framework of the architectural conception. They require a high level of definition of procedures and exchanges, which is incompatible with the flexibility of current practices. The second objective of this model is to give to each actor an adapted vision of the project evolution. This representation has to be adapted to the role and the participation of the actor at each moment of the project life cycle. We propose in this article an open hyperdocument structure based on a relational model of cooperation. Some experimental views and navigations are exposed and commented. The integration of this new dimension allows to propose to the user an adapted vision of the project by taking into account the role he plays inside the project.

summary This paper explores the use of subdivision algorithms for the production of three-dimensional ornament. In a first step, this paper presents modifications to the Catmull Clark and Doo Sabin processes’ weighting schemes. In a second step, it proposes how these modified processes can be applied specifically to the generation of ornament. It presents methods for specifying weights using parameters both intrinsic and extrinsic to the mesh. Strategies for working with both very uniform and more differentiated input meshes are considered.

summary We introduce a formal grammar as a computational approach to the generation of design. While existing shape-grammars transform primitive shapes as lines or rectangles, the presented production system specifically addresses polyhedral objects described by three-dimensional meshes composed of vertices, edges and faces. The parameters of the transformation rules are sensitive to topological and topographical properties of the selected input mesh. We demonstrate that this approach allows the creation of new ornamental structures and can lead to a new language of architectural forms.

summary The research demonstrates a novel approach to using various parts of maize plants (leaves, fruits, and kernels) to create building materials that can be modularized for construction purposes. Corn is widely grown as an agricultural crop, but after the removal of the fruit, the remaining parts are often discarded and contribute significantly to environmental pollution. Currently, only a few companies are engaged in the recycling of maize into building materials. However, existing methods of recycling corn have various limitations such as high energy consumption, a requirement for skilled workers on-site, and extensive equipment needs. In this project, we aim to reduce reliance on equipment, skilled craftsmanship and material resources to make the design compatible with traditional building methods for low-income areas. We first analyzed the material properties of each part of the corn and found corn husks to be the most efficient for extraction. Additionally, we obtained adhesives from the waste fruit. Finally, we designed assembly units and assembled two sturdy and reliable chairs to verify the feasibility of our workflow. The low technical, equipment, and cost requirements of this material make it possible for modular construction to be replicated in local communities, thus promoting community participation and self-management in construction.
