summary This paper presents a computational approach to provide assessment and optimization of principles from Transit Oriented Development (TOD) - an urban development model that advocates compact, walkable, and mixed-use neighborhoods, centered around transport stations. In spite of being increasingly promoted around the world, TOD lacks an approach that addresses multivariate data for optimization of its principles. In this paper, we propose an algorithmic-parametric methodology, applied to a neighborhood unit in a case study. The objective is to demonstrate the potential of algorithmic approaches towards a more dynamic management of the large amount of data involved in DOT implementation methodologies.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for evaluating and generating urban morphologies guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result on optimized infrastructure provision and energy efficient low-carbon districts. This paper presents algorithmic experiments for proposing a rapid-transit district, by the optimization of its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate and efficient TOD principles-oriented modelling.

summary In this article is presented some results of the studies and data obtained in the undergraduates’ research project linked to the Architecture and Urbanism curse of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), in which a digital evaluative approach of environmental performance of buildings in the campus is pursued. In this paper is reported the unfolding of this research project that aims to develop a virtual prototype in Building Information Modelling platform of a campus construction, and its application in environmental simulation studies as well as the management of the building´s information as-built.

summary Many different types of algorithms have been associated to gain complex shapes. They give rise to a large set of unusual forms, through calculations based on computational geometries, self-organizing systems, rule-based systems, and optimization, often still assembled in morphogenesis principles. Many of these discoveries mimic physical, chemical, and even behavioral principles at the edge of this code-translated knowledge. Thus, any new form, the result of this exploratory perspective, can mean some progress. If the understanding of specific algorithmic characteristics has validity (for precise programming), generic concepts are also important for simplifying procedures and presenting general concepts of the result.

summary The architecture has been greatly expanded in its complexity by the resources of computing. Thus, most intense experiences are achieved through visual metaphors. As a way of understanding digital cases increasingly present in the design of everyday life, this work aims to illustrate an application of the semiotic method of Charles W. Morris: a study on digital design created by Kokkugia Architects, the building Babiy Yar Memorial. A syntactic analysis of the digital process (presenting the concepts and key elements within the process) is performed; the understanding of that expression in the semantic context and, finally, their contextual pragmatic aspects.

summary Digital fabrication technologies have been developing rapidly; the number of shapes that can be created in different design sectors by this technology has grown exponentially and in the jewelry field it’s not different. Jewelry is an old and constantly evolving craft and the digital manufacturing was first incorporated into it as a form of prototyping and problem solving, but today there are many creative uses for it. This article presents data on some productive practices, prioritizing information on learning, knowledge domain and access to digital fabrication technologies. We discuss the ways which the technology is appropriated in a specific socio-productive context of design jewelry production located in Northeastern Brazil. The study identifies the techniques and technologies effectively appropriated by the surveyed audience and discusses the conditions of these appropriations.

title A data-driven approach to inform planning process in informal settlements

summary Official data on informal settlements are outdated, scarce, and sometimes nonexistent. Also, existing digital tools to produce spatial data on urban form are not prepared to deal with their degree of heterogeneity. We then propose a method to obtain, structure and analyze georeferenced data, aiming to support participatory planning of precarious settlements in Brazil. The results include mapping basic elements of urban form and also automatic extraction of urban parameters. The method proved relevant to allow not only the collaboration between team members but also the dialogue with community members, revealing its role in fostering a transformative design process.

title The use of simulation to evaluate design options on conceptual mass study phase

summary This paper presents the results of an exploratory study developed with the Autodesk Project Vasari and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Project Vasari was used to evaluate the environmental performance of a low-income housing project. It shows us that the actual site orientation of the project presents poor environmental performance, which could be improved by rotating building in 90 degrees. The AutoCAD Civil 3D was used to evaluate how that rotation should impact on earthmoving. The results showed that the simulations developed, even though having low level of accuracy, provide sufficiently clear information to support decision making on conceptual mass project stage.

summary Extended Reality (XR) technologies have the potential to help and improve the teaching and design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as they offer different ways of perceiving and representing space and various functionalities. Therefore, it is important to systematize scientific production in this area. This research aims to identify and analyze the main applications of XR in teaching and in the design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as well as its benefits and limitations. A systematic literature review of publications on CumInCAD and SBTIC, from 2015 to 2022, was carried out. The results show the growing emphasis of XR as a medium that offers benefits both for teaching and design practice. However, there are still limitations to be overcome to make XR more inclusive. As a contribution, a greater understanding of how XR has been applied in teaching is provided along with a reflection on its impact on the means of representation in the design process.

summary This paper presents a parametric analysis where WWR and color glass was varied to determine their influence in the thermal performance of an office building’s room. Design Builder tool was used to calculate the thermal load and the internal gains. The WWR variation in different orientations resulted in a significant increase of the thermal load. The reflective glass allowed a better thermal performance of the room. With the use of computer simulation was possible to analyse many constructive and design characteristics of the facade and its influence on the results, when considered together.

summary The subject of this research is the study of the retraction change mode of deployable scissor grids based on the Hoberman mechanism. The retraction logic of this type of flat mechanism can be changed mainly by moving the pivot point of the rod and using bistable deployable scissor structures consisting of translational units. Therefore, the mechanism can remain flat while it retracts, and the irregular translational units allow for a greater variety of surface variations in the shape of the mechanism. Through the study of the scissor system, a simplified mathematical model is used to explore the geometric potential, and a formula for complete flat retraction is derived. Following the input of defined data using digital tools, the remaining translational scissor units that conform to the retraction logic are generated. Then, irregular linkage mechanisms are created that can retract from 3D to 2D, with the opening mode not being limited to the radial sphere or other mean geometries. These results provide a unique retraction mode for deployable scissor grids, thus facilitating the collection and transportation of such mechanisms in practical applications.

summary Since not all architectural projects can be involved in performance design calculations or optimizations, this study aims to reduce user technical barriers and enhance the visualization of the evaluation process. This paper introduces a parametric approach to room acoustics simulation, offering an interactive interface for modeling and simulation. By using Rhino-Grasshopper as a real-time ray tracing interface, both the Image Source Method (ISM) and Early Scattered Method (ESM) are employed for ray particle rebound tracking and analysis. The feasibility and analysis of spatial acoustic assessment tools are explored through the combination of data visualization and open-source parameter design meth. This research diversifies spatial models using various modeling tools like Revit, ArchiCAD 25, Rhinoceros 3ds, and SketchUp. This approach enables the evaluation of the effects and disparities caused by different modeling systems on simulation calculations. Furthermore, this paper also highlights the potential optimization of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) design workflow process. The results underscore the relationship between improved simulation accuracy and the utilization of numerical calculations, referencing benchmark simulation software ODEON for data comparison and review.

summary Recent studies, both collaborative design system and scenario scripting, attempt to explore further CG media. Corbusier pointed out that good architecture is a place where people can walk unrestrainedly and feel free in spirit. However, it is apparent that the human figures are still in animation, whereas they are free to move in the real world. The human figure always plays an important role in the development of design media. The objective of this paper is to develop a new design method using CG media and to study the process of dynamic human texture mapping within the CG. This research conducted a design experiment using computer as the sole design medium. The results show that the new design method not only altered the behavior of the designer, but also impacted design thinking cognition.

summary The emergence of virtual reality technology now brings the possibility of new design methods. Virtual reality technology allows architects to feel space better and express design ideas more intuitively. With the interactive perception equipment and VR glasses, geometric shapes can be created and modified in a virtual environment, replacing the mouse and keyboard to complete the creation of space in the early stage of the design process. At present, the application of virtual reality in the architectural design process has some problems include unnatural interaction, low accuracy, high work cost. This paper will summarize the interactive methods of virtual reality technology in various current cases and compare the input and output of the device by analyzing the matrix method. We can explore interactions that are beneficial to architectural design. Using these interactive methods, we can expand the interface relationship between humans and the virtual environment.

summary Creating a visual 3D model is a vital part of the architectural design process. In architectural scenes, immersion is important to perceive the connection between various aspects. The general interaction cannot meet the needs of immersion. The immersion and interaction of virtual reality (VR) allows architects to feel and design spaces better. However, VR is currently mainly used only for visualization and walkthrough of the architectural space. The design process is still done using modeling software. This paper proposes a method of architectural design in virtual reality, allowing designers to experience the model created in real-time and improve the design. The use of visual mesh positioning and ray limits can help users create accurate architectural models. The paper also applied the innovative design method to the participatory design process and showed that architectural design in virtual reality can improve design quality and better meet the needs of users.

However, the question as to whether or not geometrically curved space can actually serve as the original design concept remains an unanswered question. This research aims to explore the relationship between virtual reality CAVE and the design of non-geometrically curved interior space. In this paper we make use of the PC-based virtual reality CAVE system — which is aimed at the design of large-scale interior space. It is possible that VR CAVE provides solutions to the problems inherent in non-geometrically curved space design.
