summary The paper unfolds the association between geometry and material behaviour, specifically the elastic properties of resin impregnated latex membranes, by means of homogenizing protocols which translate physical properties into geometrical functions. Resinimpregnation patterns are applied to 2D pre-stretched form-active tension systems to induce 3D curvature upon release. This method enables form-finding based on material properties, organization and behaviour. A digital tool developed in the Processing environment demonstrates the simulation of material behaviour and its prediction under specific environmental conditions. Finally, conclusions are drawn from the physical and digital explorations which redefine generative material-based design computation, supporting a synergetic approach to design integrating form, material and environment.

source CAADRIA '99 [Proceedings of The Fourth Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 7-5439-1233-3] Shanghai (China) 5-7 May 1999, pp. 215-224
summary In this paper, we report on work in which media environments are developed to support schema emergence in collaborative design. We present a conceptual framework to support the cognitive phenomena of emergence in CAAD environment. First, we introduce and present a cognitive conception of schema emergence in design. We then discuss our computational model of schema emergence. Based upon this model we propose a conceptual framework to support emergence in collaborative design. Finally, the potential of the present implementation and the computational tools which support the approach are discussed .

title The Pedagogical Role of the Computer in Design Studies
source Computer Bulletin. September, 1988. pp. 11-17 : ill. includes a short bibliography
summary The teaching of architectural design involves the transfer of a broad spectrum of knowledge. This ranges in diversity from the acquisition of skills to those types of domain- distinctive knowledge which are actually employed in the generation of designs. The authors make a broad distinction between instrumental knowledge employed in various stages of design but peripheral to the actual process of generating designs, and conceptual-configurative knowledge which, in fact, makes the generation of designs possible. In the model of the design process in which there is a sequential relationship between the conceptual-formal and physical- material stages of design, this distinction between the instrumental and the conceptual is most marked during the early, or conceptual, stages of design. However it may be seen to follow through all stages of the design process

title Beyond Sketching : Visual Reasoning Through Re-Representation in Cognitive Design Media
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.1998.337
source CAADRIA ‘98 [Proceedings of The Third Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 4-907662-009] Osaka (Japan) 22-24 April 1998, pp. 337-346
summary Our research approach which is termed Cognitive Design Media (CDM) demonstrates how the cognitive phenomena of design can be supported in computerized environments. Our current work on the ‘sketch’ project is introduced presented and illustrated. Sketching in design is considered to be one of the significant cognitive phenomena which supports exploration through re-representation in design. Until now, only the medium of hand drawing and sketching has been considered to support these processes. Rather than automating the traditional hand-made sketch, or interpreting sketches in a computer system, we are attempting to employ the computer to support one of the cognitive mechanism of re-representation which underlie the sketch activity.

summary The cognitive properties of design learning have rarely been the subject of design education. Irrespective of the specific design domain, traditional educational models in design education are based upon the evaluation of the product of designing rather than on what might be considered a learning increment. Lately we have developed the concept of cognitive learning tasks as learning increments in design education and propose that digital media constitute the basis of uniquely powerful learning technologies. The research described in this paper addresses the confluence of cognitive learning tasks as a pedagogical approach in design education, its potential relationship to digital media in order to develop a digital design didactics, and the relationship of these developments in design education to current practices of digital design generation. In this paper, we focus on the cognitive aspects of visual cognition in design learning. An example in the domain of architectural design is illustrated.

title Prior Knowledge in Design : A Dynamic Knowledge-based Model of Design and Creativity
source Design Studies. January 1990. vol. 11: pp. 17-28 : ill. includes bibliography
summary The incorporation of precedents into a present design situation by adaptation, restructuring and reformulation depends upon processes of typification and generalization. The function of prototypes as a characteristic form of generalized and structured knowledge in design is described. A precedent-based design model employing memory-based reasoning is proposed. It is argued that typological concepts can serve as a matching level between situation types and solution types. In such an approach both the organization of structured knowledge and the mechanisms of matching to prior knowledge such as cross-indexing and analogy appear to be of seminal importance. A memory-based reasoning process in routine, innovative and creative design is postulated. This is based on concepts of dynamic and episodic memory. Relevant work in the fields of memory organization, machine learning and analogical reasoning is considered with respect to its significance to the field of knowledge-based design

title Digital architecture – Towards a new Discourse
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 473-477
summary Discourse in digital architecture has begun to occupy new design concepts related to digital design. Design concepts are now becoming integrated into the general architectural discourse. This research investigated this process, the emergence, migration, and crystallization of a new conceptual content under the influence of digital design. In order to demonstrate this shift, significant projects were selected to represent features of the expression that reflects the changes and evolution of conceptual content that underlie digital design. This analysis was accomplished employing the ICF analytical framework. Our findings demonstrate the change in the conceptual structure in digital architecture. Certain expressions that are related to digital technology have moved up from a low level descriptive level to a significant conceptual role in formulating current ideational content. The methodology findings and the contribution to the definition of the conceptual content of contemporary discourse in digital architecture are described and presented in this paper.

source Computers in Design Studio Teaching [EAAE/eCAADe International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 09523687-7-3] Leuven (Belgium) 13-14 November 1998, pp. 123-129
summary The relevance of design thinking and cognition to the development of pedagogical approaches in the architectural electronic design studio is presented and discussed. In this approach we emphasize and demonstrate the role of the acquisition of explicit knowledge in design. The acquisition of knowledge is achieved through the explication of cognitive structures and strategies of design thinking. The explication process is implemented in a computational medium which supports the learning process as well as the potential re-use of the knowledge.

summary Designerly ways of thinking have become a significant topic in design research. If indeed, contemporary phenomena of “digital design thinking” are different from traditional models, than there is emerging pressure to pioneer new teaching paradigms Theories and methods of digital design can no longer be conceptualized as the merging of computational tools with conventional formulations of design thinking. Within the framework of this orientation to a critical formulation of new educational agenda, pedagogical issues are considered. A new orientation to understanding the impact of digital media on “digital design thinking” and pedagogy is presented discussed and demonstrated

title The New Structuralism: Conceptual Mapping of Emerging Key Concepts in Theory and Praxis
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 8 - no. 4, p. 419
summary The New Structuralism focuses upon the potential of novel design processes to return architecture to its material sources. A theoretical research presents how the structuring, encoding, and fabricating of material systems are contributing to a new material practice which demands a theoretical foundation comprehensive enough to integrate emerging theories, methods and technologies in design. Selected research works supports shared geometrical, structural and manufacturing representations and processes relevant to The New Structuralism are selected and reviewed. DDNET (Digital Design NETwork) is proposed as a conceptual structure which attempts to relate the body of these findings with theoretical constructs such as key concepts, models, techniques, technologies and leading precedents associated with The New Structuralism.

title Designing Experience in Virtual Worlds
source Proceedings of the 8th European Architectural Endoscopy Association Conference
summary The immense growth in computer and virtual reality technology has resulted in the development of new approaches to the design of virtual environments. Virtual environments related to everyday life are currently being designed and implemented to accommodate diverse functions. These information environments are generally not sufficient to simulate the experience of real life. There is a need to establish new conceptual approaches to enhance the richness of our experience in virtual world.

summary The article describes an approach to teaching syntactical aspects of design and architectural composition by means of exercises utilizing various computer graphics programs. The theoretical assumptions and the background of formal studies are reviewed as sources of this approach. A working definition of Architectural Knowledge and Design Knowledge is postulated as the theoretical foundation of Computer- Aided Learning. The term, Architectural Syntax, is proposed as the formalization of this knowledge. The pedagogical significance of computers as a medium of design education is analyzed, and the particular role of syntactical knowledge in design, the computation of design and in C A.L. in design is identified. An outline of the course, The Joy of Syntax, is described and future research and development in these fields discussed.

title The Computer Model "BGRAF": A Cognitive Approach to Emergency Egress Simulation
source University of Michigan
summary During the past decade, fire safety researchers have come to the understanding that human factors in fires play an important role in controlling the spread of fire; and in decreasing the number of fire casualties in buildings. With the current developments in computer technology, computer modeling of human behavior in fires emerged as an effective method of research. Such computer modeling techniques offered the advantage of being able to experiment with hypothetical fires in buildings without Note endangering human life. Consequently, a study to develop a computer model that will simulate the emergency egress behavior of people in fires was undertaken. Changes in the information processing capacity of the individual as a result of time pressure and stress was considered as part of the emergency egress decision process. Theories from environmental psychology identified a range of cognitive factors, such as visual access in buildings, architectural differentiation, signage and plan configuration that affect way finding and route selection in buildings. These factors needed to be incorporated into emergency egress models. The model was based on the integrated building data base of the CAD system developed at the University of Michigan, Architecture and Planning Lab., which provided a comprehensive building definition, and allowed both graphic and tabular output. Two actual fire incidences were simulated as part of the validation study. These studies have stressed the importance of the cognitive aspects of the physical environment as a factor in emergency egress. A goal structure that represented the total decision process during fires was incorporated into the model. This structure allowed the inputting and testing of a variety of goal structures by using actions as model blocks. The objectives of the model developed in this study can best be summarized as to study and eventually to predict the route selection and exiting behavior in fires, with the purpose of using such information in making building design and code development decisions, and in suggesting action sequences that will best support the safety of the occupants of a building under different emergency conditions.

title An Intelligent Simulation Approach in Simulating Dynamic Processes in Architectural Environments
source Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures: Education, Research, Applications [CAAD Futures ‘91 Conference Proceedings / ISBN 3-528-08821-4] Zürich (Switzerland), July 1991, pp. 177-190
summary The implications of object-oriented data models and rule-based reasoning systems is being researched in a wide variety of application areas ranging from VLSI circuit design (Afsannanesh et al 1990) to architectural environments (Coyne et al 1990). The potential of this approach in the development of discrete event simulations is also being scrutinized (Birtwistle et al 1986). Such computer models are usually called "expert simulations" or "intelligent simulations". Typically rule-basing in such models allows the definition of intelligent-objects that can reason about the simulated dynamic processes through an inferencing system. The major advantage of this approach over traditional simulation languages is its ability to provide direct reference to real world objects and processes. The simulation of dynamic processes in architectural environments poses an additional Problem of resolving the interaction of architectural objects with other objects such as humans, water, smoke etc., depending on the process simulated. Object-oriented approach promises potential in solving this specific problem. The first part of this paper addresses expert simulation approach within the context of architectural settings, then the second part summarizes work done in the application of such an approach to an emergency egress simulation.
