summary Designing thermodynamic architectural surfaces in architecture, is driven mainly by material performance, excluding subjective thermal sensation, as a driving design factor. The aim of this paper is the development of new integrative methods for the implementation of thermally active responsive material structures in architecture and construction, focused on application for intrinsic non-isolated thermodynamic architectural surfaces. Through an experimental case study, we present new methods to identify, develop and test novel lightweight structures, combining wood and phase change materials, with bespoke thermal performance. The research findings suggest that the coordination between geometric configuration, material hierarchy and human proximity, can allow for high-resolution steering of the wood-PCM thermodynamic performance in an architectural scale. This in turn allows a material- driven approach for developing a thermally responsive system directly engaging with human thermal sensation.

In this context, design and artistic research migrates to new experimentation with the sensitive, intelligent, perceptive elements found within technological realms. In our research, artistic multimedia interactive installations conceal contemporary concepts and explore computer technology. We believe that this field of research is a powerful resource to develop dialogues between different cultures and promote social and technological inclusiveness.

title A Linear Time Exact Hidden Surface Algorithm

summary This Paper presents a new hidden surface algorithm. Its output is the set of the visible pieces of edges and faces, and is as accurate as the arithmetic precision of the computer. Thus calculating the hidden surfaces for a higher resolution device takes no more time. If the faces are independently and identically distributed, then the execution time is linear in the number of faces. In particular, the execution time does not increase with the depth complexity. This algorithm overlays a grid on the screen whose fineness depends on the number and size of the faces. Edges and faces are sorted into grid cells. Only objects in the same cell can intersect or hide each other. Also, if a face completely covers a cell then nothing behind it in the cell is relevant. Three programs have tested this algorithm. The first verified the variable grid concept on 50,000 intersecting edges. The second verified the linear time, fast speed, and irrelevance of depth complexity for hidden lines on 10,000 spheres. This also tested depth complexities up to 30, and showed that perspective scenes with the farther objects smaller are even faster to calculate. The third verified this for hidden surfaces on 3,000 squares

summary While it is well known that the built environment influences our emotional state, it is often difficult to attribute these experiences to particular properties. In fact, a systematic investigation of the relation between physical structure and emotional experience of architecture has not yet been done. Now virtual reality simulations facilitate a completely controlled variation of spatial properties and thus allow to empirically evaluate architectural hypothesises. The aim of the presented study was to investigate which factors from a component-based description of rooms significantly correlate with cardinal dimensions of experience. In a perceptual experiment experiental qualities of 16 virtual vacant rectangular interiors were rated in eight principal categories by 16 participants using the semantic differential scaling technique. The scenes were generated by a custom made graphics tool that also automatically generated the component-based scene descriptions. The data analysis revealed several interesting correlations between scene features and rated experience: For example, a preference for ratios near to the golden section could be observed for spatial proportions, which are not directly perceivable. Altogether, a set of five independent factors (openness, two room proportions, room area and balustradeheight) appeared to be effective for widely describing the observed variance of the averaged attributed experiental qualities. Our combination of realistic virtual reality simulations and psychophysical data raising methods proved to be effective for basic architectural research. It allowed us to demonstrate quantitative relations between physical properties from a component-based description of architectural space and its emotional experience.

summary This paper describes Hydroactive Polymers (HAPs), a novel way of combining shape-changing Electroactive Polymers (EAPs) and water for potential design and architectural explorations. We present a number of experiments together with the Fluid Morphologies installation, which demonstrated the materials through an interactive and sensory experience. We frame our research within the context of both material science and design/architecture projects that engage the unique material properties of EAPs. A detailed description of the design and fabrication process is given, followed by a discussion of material limitations and potential for improving robustness and production. We demonstrate fluid manipulation of light and shadow that would be impossible to achieve with traditional electromechanical actuators. Through the development of this new actuator, we have attempted to advance the accessibility of programmable materials for designers and architects to conduct hands-on experiments and prototypes. We thus conclude that the HAP modules hold a previously unexplored yet promising potential for a new kind of shape-changing, liquid-based architecture

summary This article presents the current state of an ongoing research project developed at the ARIAM-LAREA laboratory of the school of Paris La Villette. The aim of this research is to offer architects digital tools that allow them to explore the project with freehand sketches as they do with pencil and paper. The role of these tools is to interpret the freehand sketches in order to work on them and transform them. They produce from these freehand sketches a digital model from which it will be possible to build a 3D representation, or to evaluate the project from any technical point of view. This paper only shows the part of the system that recognizes particular strokes in an architectural drawing.

summary There is an essential contradiction between the making of buildings or built environments in a threedimensional modeler and the graphic control of this process. Three-dimensional modeling is a constructive activity, in which solids are assembled as they would be in an actual structure; it benefits the designer. Presentation and documentation, on the other hand, are prescriptive activities that direct some of the construction and all the visualization and criticism of the proposal; they benefit the user and builder.

A building while being designed can be visualized and criticized from its solid model, and the model can take a variety of forms depending on its part): computer-based, drawn in orthographic or perspective projection, constructed of cardboard or wood, or described narratively by means of text, programmatic data, performance model or animation. However, practicing architecture is the process of recording and communicating the decision making process and the contractual obligations that result. In actual practice, in contrast to the designer directed ideal, more participants are brought in sooner at the beginning of a project and with more publicity, which in turn means keeping more, not fewer, records. As the profession evolves, records of the string of design decisions will become more automated, more carefully structured and more retrievable. More buildings will be "tracked" and exposed to review in this way because public environmental sensitivity will improve. The communication between a single designer and his own thoughts will become less and less important.

summary This paper describes various forms of line drawing representation, compares different schemes of quantization, and reviews the manner in which a line drawing can be extracted from a tracing or a photographic image. The subjective aspects of a line drawing are examined. Different encoding schemes are compared, with emphasis on the so-called chain code which is convenient for highly irregular line drawings. The properties of chain-coded line drawings are derived, and algorithms are developed for analyzing line drawings to determine various geometric features. Procedures are described for rotating, expanding, and smoothing line structures, and for establishing the degree of similarity between two contours by a correlation technique. Three applications are described in detail: automatic assembly of jigsaw puzzles, map matching, and optimum two-dimensional template layout

summary Architects throughout time have designed tree-inspired structures, not only to decorate their creations, but also to explore biomimicry to solve mechanical and structural problems. With the predominance of digital simulation tools, these dendritic-shaped structures are now more easily explored. However, these explorations tend to lack the rationalization required to make them applicable to current production means. In this paper, we take a step back and ensure the connection between the creation and the production of the designs generated with these new digital approaches. The present investigation combines design and analysis tools in search for tree-inspired structures that take advantage of the current techniques of building construction.

summary New media and modern building automation have a strong impact on contemporary architecture. So far one could regard built architecture as static. These new technologies introduce a dynamic impulse to architecture. The objective of our research and teaching work is to demonstrate the impact of innovative systems on architecture in daily usage while providing building automation, multimedia integration and facility management services in intelligent networked buildings. These technologies, as described in this paper are integrated in our second year course for students of Architecture. By designing an interactive graphical interface for the lab they were asked to create a spatial scenario as a self running Flash animation. Thus real space is merged with virtual reality.

summary This paper can be viewed as the continued development of a research project presented at last year’s eCAADe. The project focused on the potential and possibilities of cooperation among architects, investors with concrete building projects, and researchers at the university level working on generative design and parametric construction. After having spent several years of research on design techniques in a purely academic setting at the university we see, contrary to our fears, that reality and the integration of concrete factors such as budget, time management, etc. does not diminish but rather improves the quality of our work. This work is not primarily concerned with the development of a new architectural language but the intelligent use of modern computer technology based on digitized planning processes defined as ‘complex building design’. Designs developed in this manner can be distinguished by certain characteristics, the evaluation of which is a point critically discussed in the following paper.
