summary This paper presents the results of a protocol study which explores the cognitive behaviour of eight practicing architects while they used a geometric modeller (Rhino) with a parametric modeller (Grasshopper) as they designed. The protocol videos collected were transcribed, segmented and coded using the FBS ontology as the coding scheme. This resulted in each protocol being transformed from a qualitative video into a sequence of symbols from the FBS ontology and further divided into design knowledge and rule algorithm classes. The sequence of symbols forms the foundation on which quantitative representations of cognitive behaviour can be constructed and compared. Results of the relative cognitive effort expended on design knowledge and rule algorithm classes, through an articulation of the cognitive design issues, have been compared and discussed. These results provide insight into the use of parametric modellers by architects.

summary Previous research into designers’ behaviour in parametric environments suggests that parametric tools support or promote design processes in a wide variety of ways. However, despite the results of such research, there is a lack of empirical evidence directly comparing how design in parametric environments differs from design in traditional environments. Aiming to address this issue, a pilot study is presented in this paper comparing designers’ behaviour in Parametric Design Environments (PDEs) with that in more traditional, Geometric Modelling Environments (GMEs). In the study five designers completed two design tasks respectively in PDEs and GMEs. By employing the method of protocol analysis, different behaviours in the two design environments were identified and compared. This paper focuses on the results of testing the experimental setting and of the coding scheme used in the study. One example set of results from the pilot study is reported – where in the designer’s behaviour exhibits some differences between the two environments – in order to provide an example of the coding used.

summary The unquestionable primacy of a principal - investor makes the creators strain themselves to present visions of their works in the most clear way. Though perspective drawings enable verification of the vision, but as a part of technical specification on the site they are, in general, needless. It is the investor, not prepared for perception of two-dimensional drawings, who enforces the designer to look for still more attractive forms of presentation of project propositions. The efforts of the creator are addressed to him - in order to be understood, to enchant him, to win the competition for the client. Until quite lately the most readable (but how expensive) form of visualization was the miniature modelling. In the case of vision which has been already put into shape, there is always somebody who can aid the creator in various forms of visualization. The one who can help in laborious drafting of perspective, or in preparation of a traditional miniature model, or in creation of a modern (i.e. computer) one.

summary Computer-based tools have changed the focus and modes of design thinking in architecture. While often criticized for its overemphasis on formal expressions and its pursuit of the spectacular, digital creativity has begun to take into account a multiplicity of design factors that define architecture. These factors relate to performance simulation and analysis, constructability, and Building Information Modelling (BIM). This paper discusses the use of physical and digital mock-ups in the context of building technology courses. It uses these mock-ups as an important vehicle that provides students with a feedback mechanism regarding often digitally idealized creative thinking.

summary Although conceptual design is one of the most important stages of creation, impacting the quality and cost of the final product, current research indicates that designers still lack adequate tools supporting early-stage design. This research challenges that notion, by proposing a hybrid digital design platform for conceptual architectural design. The platform contains four miscellaneous techniques: animation, free-form modelling, associative parametric modelling and per-formance-driven modelling. In a digital design experiment we demon-strate that the collective application of these techniques to early-stage design explorations intensifies the architect’s visual and cognitive rea-soning processes, and hence supports the emergence of promising de-sign artefacts which bear the traces of all the techniques applied in the course of their conception. Additionally, the study also points at some other promising virtues of the hybrid toolset, including: provision of diversified form-finding opportunities on various levels of design ab-straction; the potential to direct designers onto unplanned creation paths; the ability to increase the versatility and functionality of the solutions; and the capacity to sustain design activities of various character, ranging from highly intuitive ones to very rational ones.

Agent-based Model is applied in this research and has been developed by involving more groups of agents, imitating multiple social systems. summary This paper presents a novel Digital Twin scenario for enhancing Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) in the context of Industry 4.0. Traditional HRC environments, characterised by their repetitive and standardised tasks, are limited in adapting to dynamic and custom requirements. We propose a dynamically configurable Digital Twin (DCDT) system, enabling dynamic configuration of virtual HRC workspaces for creative design and prototyping, addressing the limitations of conventional HRC environments confined to repetitive tasks. By integrating AR, the system allows human operators to intuitively interact with robots, planning and simulating robotic trajectories with interactive holographic visualisations. We cooperate with The Design Modelling and Fabrication (DMaF) Lab at The University of Sydney and propose a workflow based on the DCDT system to assist students complete basic robot co-creative drawing programming under routine teaching scenarios. This research underscores the importance of AR in bridging the gap between physical and virtual workspaces, facilitating a flexible and efficient HRC setup. Future work will focus on refining the technology, addressing scalability, and exploring its adaptability to various creative and prototyping domains.

summary This paper introduces a visibility-graph-based workflow for early stages of architectural design, aimed at estimating relative pedestrian crowd distribution in shopping malls. Traditional methods like Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) and Space Syntax analysis face challenges in early design phases due to extensive data or configuration needs and lack of detail respectively. Our approach uses visibility graph as the foundation and generates visit probabilities and Chains of Activities (COAs) from empirical studies, balancing accuracy, accessibility and efficiency. The workflow's integration within designers’ familiar design interface allows for rapid prototyping and assessment of design iterations, making it a practical tool. Validation through a case study in a shopping mall in Singapore demonstrates the workflow's accuracy, with results showing strong similarity to both ABM and observed data, but with significantly less time and resource demands. This workflow offers a novel solution for early-stage design, providing a swift and accurate means to evaluate pedestrian dynamics and optimize design layouts.

summary Tessellation is a flexible modelling method for computational designers that allows to articulate and detail complex topological surfaces by repeating components along target surfaces. This technique provides a discretization strategy compatible with many digital-fabrication processes. Well-known geometrical issues limit such an approach on surfaces characterized by highly variable curvature, which can output errors such as self-intersections and undesired deformations. This research shows geometrical methods to manage such problems and implement them in an open-source tool. In particular, automatic and manual procedures for manipulating normal vector fields are utilized and applied to the modelling of complex shape case studies.

title Macro-scale designs through topological deformations in the built environment

summary Design studies are being done on contemporary master-plans which may be applied in many locations worldwide. Advances in information technology are becoming the base model of design studies, and these may be more effective than the efforts of humans in the field of architecture and urban design. However, urban morphology variables and constants must be considered while designing contemporary master-plans in the existing built environment. The aims of this study were to extend the use of computer software for different applications and to make a topological work in the regional context. Accordingly, a case study was made using the nCloth simulation tools to create non-Euclidean forms while protecting the road system, which is one of the constant parameters of urban morphology in the built environment.

summary Performance as an architectural design paradigm has been emerging during the recent years. We have developed an understanding that we formalized as a taxonomy for performative architecture that considers performance from three points of view: health, safety and security performance; functional and efficiency performance; and psychological, social, cultural, and esthetic performance. This paper focuses on a design project that explores these ideas as a performative architecture proposal. The project focuses on the architectural transformation of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, 41 forts, as a green belt. This transformation considers a holistic approach of defining a general method and guideline. We developed a series of parametric models for the definition and generation of designs. The first model computes an urbanization level for each fort. Consequently, models are developed in 4 stages: regional design, urban design, building design, and production of a scale model, and these are applied in an iterative manner to reach design outcomes for the project.

summary As a defining factor in shaping people’s experience in architectural spaces, lighting is realistically visualized via a plethora of rendering options in CAD and BIM solutions. However, their outputs are usually static or limited to basic changes. Thus, they may not satisfactorily visualize many dynamic and interactive lighting scenarios, such as energy-saving smart windows and lights, engaging street illumination, and entertainment setups. With the increasing automation of human-building interaction (HBI), visualizing such interactions empowers researchers and students who are interested in experimenting with customized lighting setups. Moving in this direction, this paper presents the lighting features of Tames, an open-source Unity toolkit developed by the author that visualizes dynamic and interactive elements in virtual environments without a need for programming. With Tames, the designers can navigate and interact with the design from the perspective of an occupant with the lighting and other elements in real-time manually or automatically. The workflow and capabilities of Tames are demonstrated by its application in the context of concert hall project designed by a student. This author argues that the availability and user-friendliness of this tool will contribute to architectural pedagogy and research. It allows students and researchers to visualize a wider variety of interactive designs and cases easier and, as an enabling tool, it may encourage them to explore and experiment with dynamic and interactive lighting.

keywords The present paper is part of an ongoing research that deals with the inclusion of the effect of bio-luminescence as a substitute or complimentary light source in urban environments, with the main scope of reducing energy consumption for lighting in exterior areas. The paper discusses the selection of genetically modified transgenic plants for use in the climate of Greece and through bibliographic reference and preliminary experiments the modeling of a simulated light source that has the bio-luminescent properties of a specific plant. The modeled light source can then be used in lighting simulation software. Results, through the lighting simulation of the modeled transgenic plant in a case study scenario, support the fact that bio-luminescent plants can be used as supporting lighting agents in a suburban setting and eventually reduce energy consumption for lighting.

summary TEX-FAB is a non-profit organization founded between three universities in Texas with the primary function of connecting design professionals, academics, and manufactures interested in digital fabrication. The three co-directors established TEX-FAB as a collective action, one that attempts to combine divergent interests and capabilities, for the purpose of strengthening the regional discourse around digital fabrication and parametric design. The three primary avenues for accomplishing this goal are set out as Theoria (Lectures / Exhibitions), Poiesis (Workshops) and Praxis (Competition). We see this type of effort as a new paradigm focused on providing a network of affiliated digital fabrication resources, and a platform for education/ exchange on issues of parametric modeling. It is our position that TEX-FAB engages the new and growing awareness of a regional and global hybridization. We seek to leverage the burgeoning global knowledge base to produce a more specific and contextual dialogue within the region we operate, teach, and practice.

The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

summary This paper analyzes the possibilities brought by new digital technologies, architectural design and production for a paradigm shift in the construction sector. The methodology proposes to use evolutionary economy theory, that puts innovation as a key agent for change paradigms, to see connections between existing firms in the current paradigm and the connections that could be established for a new production paradigm through digital fabrication. For this, the role of the university and its potential for innovation, will also be analyzed, both to develop product technology, and to contextualize the technology being imported into a regional context.
