summary This paper examines the role of certain graphic metaphors as generators of form in computer aided design. An introduction establishes that representation in architectural design is largely metaphorical, that metaphor is only one among several types of rhetorical turns, and that such turns can be of value in the design process. The paper then describes a case study a residential design project in which the author used a 3D computer-based modeling program to produce a type of strained rhetorical turn called catachresis. Through a series of catachrestic moves, conventional representations were made to yield unconventional architectural meanings. Next the paper discusses inferences from the case study regarding the play of rhetorical turns in computer aided design. The paper concludes with suggestions for catachrestic "wild card" and indeterminate functions in CAD systems to keep design processes and products open to uncertainty.

summary To guide their future development, research and teaching in computer-aided design must look beyond the technical capabilities of computer systems to establish a theoretical foundation based on known processes in design. This paper suggests that such a theoretical foundation can be derived by analyzing architectural study drawings -- defined as the rough drawings that architects make in the exploratory stages of design -- to determine their epistemelogical properties. The analysis brings forward concepts from a number of disciplines related to the structure of human knowledge to identify five properties of study drawings. Based on these properties, the paper proposes strategies for application to the next generation of research and teaching in CAD systems.

summary This paper discusses new approaches to the relation between handmade and computer aided media in design. The discussion focuses on two advanced studio projects in which graduate student designers incorporated interactions between physical models, a digital scanner, handmade drawings, and the manipulation of images in the computer. These interactions provide a valuable supplement to traditional means -- both manual and digital -- for generating, developing, and representing architectural form. Features of the student’s work that other designers will find significant are its focus on multiple interactions, its setting within a realistic design process, and its use of low levels of computer technology. After describing details of the designer’s media techniques, the paper discusses the practical and theoretical implications of the work.

summary The work addresses the problem of the reactivation of abandoned or underused public spaces in degraded neighborhoods. It proposes for this the development and implementation of an urban artifact whose metaphor is the protocell. With the development of bottom-up mobile system protocols, it aims to influence a process of urban regeneration in marginalized neighborhoods. The case study is located in a peripheral area of the city of Morelia, Michoacán, México. Designing, exploring and testing a textile manufacturing artifact with a hybrid process of digital and analog technology, a performance installation that responds to the physical, social and human environment.

summary Structural zoning is the recognition of forms in spatial designs. It can be used by a structural designer to develop a structural system. This paper will start with the presentation of a proof that neither user action nor a two-dimensional approach -two existing approaches of zoning- are able to recognize all possibilities for the application of a structural design to a spatial design. Only full three-dimensional structural zoning is considered to be an appropriate instrument to give useful solutions. Two new concepts will be presented to overcome problems for three-dimensional zoning: (1) Geometrically Related Reducers and (2) Matrix Coupling. These concepts are first defined in a general form and thereafter the definitions are condensed into a practically applicable format. Both concepts are demonstrated when finding rectangular zones in spatial designs up to 44 separate spatial entities. They are programmed procedurally using the C++ computer language and are used for a comparison between structural designers and computer performance.

title First results in autonomous retrieval of buried objects

summary We have developed an autonomous system for the retrieval of buried objects. It is designed to detect, locate and retrieve buried objects. The system is equipped with a surface and a subsurface sensor. The surface sensor is a laser rangefinder used to build the surface model. The subsurface sensor is a ground penetrating radar (GPR) used to detect and locate buried objects. We use an industrial robot equipped with an excavator bucket for automated excavation. Our system uses a "sense and dig cycle" procedure to retrieve buried objects. First, subsurface sensing is used to detect and locate the buried objects. If the object can be reached with one dig, the excavator retrieves it directly. Otherwise a layer of soil above the object is removed and another subsurface scan is made to get a more accurate estimate of the object location. This loop is repeated until the object is retrieved. The paper presents some recent results in sensing and excavation from experiments conducted on our testbed and the specific methods that we use to achieve those results. Such a system has numerous potential applications. They include hazardous waste removal, maintenance of subsurface structure (e.g. gas pipes), construction, and removal of unexploded buried ordnance.

summary In the framework of the German LEGOE project, an integrated tool is developed for computer aided architectural design (CAAD), quantity surveying (catalogue of building elements), life cycle cost calculation and estimation (construction and refurbishment), direct energy consumption (heating, hot-water, electri-city) and environmental impact assessment (mass flows and effect oriented evaluation). During the design process the architect works in his usual CAAD environment with building elements (e.g. one m2 of outer wall) which in turn are composed of detailed construction specifications, energy and mass flow coefficients and cost data. These elements are part of an independent catalogue of elements with all their relevant data. The different application programs use the same basic data and write the specific results into a project-specific database called a PDB which allows the comparison of these data to reference data from other projects. Evaluation and visualisation programs refer to the PDB only.

summary In the realm of architectural education, a multidisciplinary approach that unites art, science, and philosophy can catalyze novel perspectives. This paper outlines the intentions and outcome of a PhD course, "Artificial Intelligence in Architectural Research," inviting exploration of these diverse domains within architectural pedagogy. The research question in relation to establishing novel ways of embracing AI technology while maintaining a focus on the core values of teaching architectural research methodologies is thus: how can we through art, philosophy, and scientific approaches teach the principles and applications of artificial intelligence for architects? The paper will introduce how we establish a didactical framing marrying artistic, scientific, and philosophical facets to empower students to reimagine architectural practice in the age of AI. They gain tools for visionary architecture that embraces technology and reflects on societal and philosophical dimensions. We discuss the outcome of the course by examining the students’ work and feedback and conclude that the intention of the course methodology can be traced throughout the process from analogue to digital and that valuable novel realizations and understandings are created by persistently insisting on a cross-disciplinary approach to AI in relation to architectural research and creation.

summary The definition of Research by Design (RD) as a research methodology is not yet well established. RD takes its position not only as a research method next to the 'traditional' sciences but also in relation to the creative design practice, where transdicsiplinarity is in essential role. Rather than defining architecture being transdisciplinary in itself, we see beneficial to conduct research together with various disciplines concerning the complexity of the life-world. Also in this interdisciplinary research group we are willing to hold on the designerly way of knowledge production. Of our practical experience working in an interdisciplinary research group shared values, research project management together with participation with evaluative aims were the most challenging aspects. At its best, attempt for genuine transcdisciplinarity was beneficial and rewarding, though sometimes challenging. We would like to target the discussion how we architects, as researchers identify in an interdisciplinary research group conducting transdisciplinary research.

summary This paper describes the authors’ experience in the design and implementation of three interactive installations for museums based in the natural interfaces concept; that is, those that make use of the ways of communication used by humans in their natural relation with their environment by means of common abilities such as talking, gesturing, walking or touching. These installations are part of the Galicia Dixital permanent exhibition in Santiago de Compostela, which is devoted to illustrate on the culture of this Spanish region while introducing the visitor in the applications of new technologies.

summary While 3D concrete printing (3DCP) has surged in popularity, methods to harness its design potential remain largely underdeveloped. Existing design-to-manufacture workflows most commonly restrict the design to the overall geometry and a set of print parameters that may fall outside of the scope of the designer. This study presents a novel approach to integrate design and manufacturing by an integrated design-to-manufacture workflow that allows the gradation of the wall thickness along the printed part, which can be independently manipulated using established computer graphic techniques like texture projection and mesh coloring. The effectiveness of this workflow is demonstrated through the fabrication of a test body featuring a customized surface pattern. This approach aims to extend the design scope for 3DCP, enabling the addition and editing of surface patterns without geometry or code manipulation.

summary The working team is comprised of professionals and students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses. This group, participating at a certified research by Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica de la Nación, have agreed to carry out a joint designing experience about a micro-architecture prototype to be domotized by the Chair of Automation of Mechanical Engineering.We have designed a display equipment for local bookstores. The equipment in itself is ductile and useful to build a stand. It can be easily coupled and divided into modules for shop windows and different spaces within stores. It is changeable, flexible, and its arrangement is dynamic. The design contemplates general sample functions according to the various sizes of the product, which range from small to large-scale objects.The equipment offers its own domotic features.

summary The aim of this work is to present some reflexions raised when designing teaching materials in hypermedia formats for architecture. We plan to work with the essential notions for design, creation and use of hypermedia technology in either traditional and/or distance learning. While doing this, we will go deep in the use of some tools of hypermedia design. We will go from formal models such as abstraction, taking as an example the use of video games, to interface elements. summary The aim of the present study is to present the experience of the teaching of interior design together with domotics in a workshop of 5th year of the Architecture School at the National University of Cordoba, Argentina. A practice of Inner Space Design is carried out in a place of the City of Cordoba; this space is refunctionalized into a commercial space. The students design spaces and develop equipment to optimize this space so as to give an answer to commercial and image needs, design tendencies and the high technology required by the domotics. We discuss the advantages of representation in 3D and the performance of animation for both adjusting the design and checking domotics application. We intend to propose objectives and useful and necessary tools in the teaching of design with front-kine technology for both the concretion of spaces and objects and their representation.

summary This research team rethought a microarchitecture design with service for the entire community of the city of Cordoba at various sites in it. A real space is proposed that territorializes the digital, designed and built with new technologies with the aim of spreading to the city all the open activities carried out by the area of culture and extension of the National University of Cordoba, through the incorporation of technological means that are identified with the application of home automation and sustainability. The plan includes a network of microarchitectures throughout the city, beginning with the location on campus.

summary In this work we present a proyect from a group of architects and engineers, part of an investigation team authorized by the Secretary of Science and Technology, where its evaluated the possibilities, ways and technologies used for the application of domotics in the world. A research was done with emphasized on small urban spaces and a design proposal was created, articulated and organized with micro architecture for specifics urban sectors of Cordoba city, Argentina. It was proposed to develop a prototype of urban roadside, with domotic technology, that is sustainable and that attends the needs of all kind of users, from childs to elders to disabled people. Plus it was contemplated the socioeconomics and constructive characteristics of the environment.
