summary In the last decade, the ubiquitous computing paradigm has pushed computation out of desktop and made computational services pervasive throughout a physical environment. In this paper, we describe the work in progress in developing ubiquitous/pervasive applications supporting digital design media presentation. The result of the experimental study in various spatial settings is reported. Finally, we present a model of interaction towards a human-centered reactive environment, and discuss some interaction and social issues that must be addressed in implementation.

title Design coordination modeling: A distributed computer environment for managing design activities

summary The objective of this thesis is to develop an effective multi-user computer environment supporting design collaboration. This research takes a knowledge-based approach to capture meaningful process semantics specified by designers to effectively realize work. It concentrates on establishing a process infrastructure and tools for managing activities for a building design team, with emphasis on remote collaboration and distributed coordination. The results of this research include a design coordination model (DCM) and the prototype of a future generation of distributed coordination environments. DCM provides a digital representation of design processes and support visibility of coordination logic within a CAD environment. Some extended features of distributed coordination are explored in DCM, equipped with a model server that is developed using a web-based three-tier computing system architecture approach.

summary This paper outlines new facilities within ubiquitous media spaces supporting embodied interaction between humans and computation. We believe that the current approach to developing electronic based design environments is fundamentally defective with regard to support for multi-person multimodal design interactions. In this paper, we present an alternative ubiquitous computing environment based on an integrated design of real and virtual worlds. We implement a research prototype environment called iCube. The functional capabilities implemented in iCube include spatially-aware 3D navigation, laser pointer interaction, and tangible media. Some of its details, benefits, user experiences, and issues regarding design support are discussed.

summary The purpose of this work is to develop effective, yet flexible, methods of coordination in support of collaborative design. This work takes a rule-driven approach to modeling process knowledge for coordination of distributed activities. In this paper, coordination knowledge is represented by a set of dependency rules that determines when, how, and by whom each activity is performed. A design coordination model called DCM is introduced in terms of the dependency rules and the activity states associated with the use of the whole range of computer applications. DCM permits coordination flexibility and allows visibility of coordination logic dealing with dynamic aspects of design processes. A web-based system prototype that implements the design coordination model is demonstrated. Opportunities for using the system prototype to aid design coordination are discussed.

summary This paper outlines new techniques and methods for physical prototyping of interactive space. The proposed methods address three important issues: seamless integration, explicit representation, and physical prototyping. We report the experience and lessons learned from a research project called Smart Living Space. Our goal is not to propose a smart space in any detail, but rather to describe how the interactive techniques can be integrated into design practice. Finally, we illustrate how the methods can be deployed in a real-world example of interactive space.

title Tangible Design Media: Toward An Interactive CAD Platform

summary This paper presents an interactive CAD platform that uses a tangible user interface to visualize and modify 3D geometry through manipulation of physical artifacts.The tangible user interface attempts to move away from the commonly used non-intuitive desktop CAD environment to a 3D CAD environment that more accurately mimics traditional desktop drawing and pin-up situations. An important goal is to reduce the apparent complexity of CAD user interfaces and reduce the cognitive load on designers. Opportunities for extending tangible design media toward an interactive CAD platform are discussed.

summary This paper focuses on the function of drawing in architectural design. It does so by taking an in- depth look at the drawing material produced for the design of the chapel at Ronchamp. Within architectural design there is more than one type of drawing. The objective therefore is to determine what exactly these different types of drawing are and furthermore what their function is for the architect. For we believe that questioning, at this basic level, the function of drawing within the design process provides the basis from which it is possible to go on to question the function of computer-based drawing within the design process, and consequently it's function in CAAD.

summary The densification of urban spaces is a major challenge for future cities. With new forms of online consultation, we observe a movement towards open government in urban planning. A stronger participation between a more diverse body of players in a networked environment, is unveiling various discrepancies in the understanding of projects by the different actors in planning, due to access to and the comprehension of planning information. To recognise and utilise the associated capabilities of current transformations, communication between the actors in planning and their sharing of knowledge is vitally important. Information visualisation is an essential form of communication, prompting this explorative paper in considering elements specific to games visualisation and their implications for urban planning. Based on a framework for information visualisation in games it was found that the specifications for actor groups in planning processes mirror the specifications specific to target audience groups in games.

title Computer-aided design systems for the 21st century: some design guidelines

summary This paper proposes nine design principles for a new generation of computer-aided design (CAD) systems that actively support the decision making and problem solving activities of environmental design. Foremost among these are: a meaningful internal object-based representation of the artifact being designed within its environmental context; a collaborative problem solving paradigm in which the human designer and the computer form a complementary partnership; and, the notion of decision-support tools rather than predefined solutions. Two prototype computer-aided design systems implemented by the CAD Research Center that embody most of these concepts are described. ICADS (Intelligent Computer-Aided Design System) incorporates multiple expert agents in domains such as natural and artificial lighting, noise control, structural system selection, climatic determinants, and energy conservation. Given a particular building design context, the agents in ICADS draw upon their own expertise and several knowledgebases as they monitor the actions of the human designer and collaborate opportunistically. KOALA (Knowledge-Based Object-Agent Collaboration) builds on the multi-agent concepts embodied in ICADS by the addition of two kinds of agents. Mentor agents represent the interests of selected objects within the ontology of the design environment. In the implemented KOALA system building spaces are represented by agents capable of collaborating with each other, with domain agents for the provision of expert services, and with the human designer. Facilitator agents listen in on the communications among mentor agents to detect conflicts and moderate arguments. While both of these prototype systems are limited in scope by focussing on the earliest design stages and restricted in their understanding of the inherent complexity of a design state, they nevertheless promise a paradigm shift in computer-aided design.

title Coloured Petri Nets: Basic Concepts

summary This book presents a coherent description of the theoretical and practical aspects of Coloured Petri Nets (CP-nets or CPN). It shows how CP-nets have been developed - from being a promising theoretical model to being a full-fledged language for the design, specification, simulation, validation and implementation of large software systems (and other systems in which human beings and/or computers communicate by means of some more or less formal rules). The book contains the formal definition of CP-nets and the mathematical theory behind their analysis methods. However, it has been the intention to write the book in such a way that it also becomes attractive to readers who are more interested in applications than the underlying mathematics. This means that a large part of the book is written in a style which is closer to an engineering textbook (or a users' manual) than it is to a typical textbook in theoretical computer science. The book consists of three separate volumes. The first volume defines the net model (i.e., hierarchical CP-nets) and the basic concepts (e.g., the different behavioural properties such as deadlocks, fairness and home markings). It gives a detailed presentation of many small examples and a brief overview of some industrial applications. It introduces the formal analysis methods. Finally, it contains a description of a set of CPN tools which support the practical use of CP-nets. Most of the material in this volume is application oriented. The purpose of the volume is to teach the reader how to construct CPN models and how to analyse these by means of simulation. The second volume contains a detailed presentation of the theory behind the formal analysis methods - in particular occurrence graphs with equivalence classes and place/transition invariants. It also describes how these analysis methods are supported by computer tools. Parts of this volume are rather theoretical while other parts are application oriented. The purpose of the volume is to teach the reader how to use the formal analysis methods. This will not necessarily require a deep understanding of the underlying mathematical theory (although such knowledge will of course be a help). The third volume contains a detailed description of a selection of industrial applications. The purpose is to document the most important ideas and experiences from the projects - in a way which is useful for readers who do not yet have personal experience with the construction and analysis of large CPN diagrams. Another purpose is to demonstrate the feasibility of using CP-nets and the CPN tools for such projects. Together the three volumes present the theory behind CP-nets, the supporting CPN tools and some of the practical experiences with CP-nets and the tools. In our opinion it is extremely important that these three research areas have been developed simultaneously. The three areas influence each other and none of them could be adequately developed without the other two. As an example, we think it would have been totally impossible to develop the hierarchy concepts of CP-nets without simultaneously having a solid background in the theory of CP-nets, a good idea for a tool to support the hierarchy concepts, and a thorough knowledge of the typical application areas.

summary This study investigates the technological and methodological challenges in establishing an indeterministic approach to robotic fabrication that allows for a collaborative and creative design/fabrication process. The research objective enquires into how robotic processes in architecture can move from deterministic fabrication processes towards explorative and indeterministic design processes. To address this research objective, the study specifically explores how an architect and a robot can engage in a process of co-creation and co-evolution, that is enabled by a collaborative robotic arm equipped with an electric gripper and a web camera. Through a case-based experiment, of designing and constructing an adjustable façade system consisting of parallel wood lamellas, designer and robotic system co-create by means of interactive processes. The study will present and discuss the technological implementations used to construct the interactive robotic-based design process, with emphasis on the integration of visual analysis features in Grasshopper and on the benefits of establishing a state machine for interactive and creative robotic control in architecture.

summary To advance the understanding and application of complex material variation within the built environment, this study investigates the development of an interactive fabrication setup that supports co-creation workflows between craftsman, robot, computational system, and non-homogenous materials. By establishing a framework for human-robot co-creation, the study seeks to explore a fabrication workflow where design-specific information (analogue and digital) affords both human and robotic decision-making. In so doing, the study examines a critical method for integrating technological, cognitive, and architectural challenges by adopting nondeterministic co-creation workflows with increased implementation of biogenic and reused materials.

summary This paper presents results from our basic computer education at the School of Architecture in Copenhagen, a snap shot of where we are now. Two years ago it was made obligatory for the students to attend a two week computer course in both their first, and second year. The aim of these courses is to teach the students to experiment with form, and to use the computer for presenting their ideas and projects. Light is central in both courses, and in our development of the courses. The last years we have been studying light trying to develop methods, that makes it possible for the students to create a credible lightning of their 3d models. These studies has raised more questions than answers, but we have succeeded in finding some techniques, that obtained the wanted results.

summary This paper takes point of departure in an understanding of mobility as an important cultural dimension to contemporary life. The movement of objects, signs, and people constitutes material sites of networked relationships. However, as an increasing number of mobility practices are making up our everyday life experiences the movement is much more than a travel from point A to point B. The mobile experiences of the contemporary society are practices that are meaningful and normatively embedded. That is to say, mobility is seen as a cultural phenomenon shaping notions of self and other as well as the relationship to sites and places. Furthermore, an increasing number of such mobile practices are mediated by technologies of tangible and less tangible sorts. The claim in this paper is, that by reflecting upon the meaning of mobility in new mediated interaction spaces we come to test and challenge these established dichotomies as less fruitful ways of thinking. The paper concludes with a research agenda for unfolding a ‘politics of visibility’, engaging with the ambivalences of networked mobilities and mediated projects, and critically challenge of taken for granted interpretations of networked mobilities.

summary In this paper, we discuss the potential of using virtual reality collaborative platforms for e-learning to improve the quality of online education. First, we explore the characteristics of existing online platforms that can be used for e-learning. Second, we present a method for creating a Virtual Reality Collaborative Environment (VRCE) for e-learning using an online platform, namely FrameVR. Third, an experiment is conducted to investigate participants' behavioural and emotional engagement when using Zoom and the VRCE for online learning. Valid survey data from twenty-two participants are analysed. Then, participants are interviewed about their perceptions of using a VRCE for e-learning. The results of the experiment confirm that using a VRCE can increase student engagement, especially emotional engagement compared to Zoom. However, the findings also suggest that there is still room for improvement in the use of VRCE for e-learning. Therefore, further suggestions are made on the drawbacks of VRCE to improve the user experience. This paper provides insight into incorporating VRCE to enhance the e-learning experience and contribute to the development of online education.
