title Adaptive Mesh Generation for Global Diffuse Illumination

summary Rapid developments in the design of algorithms for rendering globally illuminated scenes have taken place in the past five years. Net energy methods such as the hemicube and other radiosity algorithms have become very effective a t computing the energy balance for scenes containing diffusely reflecting objects. Such methods first break up a scene description into a relatively large number of elements, or possibly sev- eral levels of elements. Energy transfers among these ele- ments are then determined using a variety of means. While much progress has been made in the design of energy transfer algorithms, little or no attention has been paid to the proper generation of the mesh of surface elements. This pa- per presents a technique for adaptively creating a mesh of surface elements as the energy transfers are computed. The method allows large numbers of small elements to be placed at parts of the scene where the most active energy trans- fers occur without requiring that other parts of the scene be needlessly subdivided to the same degree. As a result, the computational effort in the energy transfer computations can be concentrated where it has the most effect. summary This paper describes an interactive experiment in which “middleware” is interpreted as the architecture of non-building, and the making of media as mediator between physical and visual; temporal and fixed; digital and analog. Leon Battista Alberti, Jorge Silvetti, and other architectural critics have posited that architects do not make buildings but, rather, representations of buildings. The simple translation of this is that architects make drawings, models, computer simulations, and the like for the ultimate purpose of making a building. This work challenges the notion that architects make only representation media, and expands the role of architecture to include mediation as an act upon a space that is both physical and analytical. What if architects make, but they don’t make for the end result of a building? What if architects make representations that are physical and experiential, and that are designed and built without the presumption of a building? This is the space that middleware occupies.

summary “I am the kino-eye” states Dziga Vertov in his classic movie The Man with the Movie Camera (1929). The relationship of the cameraman, the subject, and audience is a dynamic that he investigates through cinema. It is also a dynamic that inspires an innovative way for advanced digital media to be explored in architecture pedagogy. This paper is focused on three ways to translate the cinematic relationship developed in Dziga’s work to digital media in architecture: the way designers capture and manipulate digital media to make architecture; how the discourse of film and architecture can be informed by an understanding of the manipulation of digital media; and the role of digital media production as a form of research for architecture. The film is noteworthy because it is not a typical narrative screenplay, rather it is a visual experiment. In standard films the perceptions of space are manipulated through the camera and through other means, but the audience is rarely aware of it. However, Vertov is acutely aware of this dynamic and engages the audience by self-consciously using what would otherwise be considered a mistake – the viewer is aware that the camera looks at his/her own relationship with film not just the relationship of camera and scene. The translation of this into the classroom is that the same tools allow designers to be critical of their relationship with the medium and the way media is used to make architecture. This concept can be applied to any medium, but in this class it is applied to how students relate with produced motion images and editing that into a video production. The three elements described in this text are key aspects of not simply producing short films, but an opportunity to actually be introspective of architecture through an alternative media. Student projects include video montages that develop a cultural perspective on design and projects that are self-conscious of technology and how it impacts the production. The film-work necessary to achieve these productions is simultaneously conscious of the way in which the author relates to the scene and conscious of how that scene is edited in the context of the production.

title A Critique of Virtual Reality in the Architectural Design Process, R-94-3

summary An addition to a building was designed using virtual reality (VR). The project was part of a design studio for graduate students of architecture. During the design process a detailed journal of activities was kept. In addition, the design implemented with VR was compared to designs implemented with more traditional methods. Both immersive and non-immersive VR simulations were attempted. Part of the rationale for exploring the use of VR in this manner was to develop insight into how VR techniques can be incorporated into the architectural design process, and to provide guidance for the implementers of future VR systems. This paper describes the role of VR in schematic design, through design development to presentation and evaluation. In addition, there are some comments on the effects of VR on detailed design. VR proved to be advantageous in several phases of the design. However, several shortcomings in both hardware and software became apparent. These are described, and a number of recommendations are provided.

title Design in virtual environments using architectural metaphor : a HIT lab gallery

summary This thesis explores the application and limitations of architectural metaphor in the design of virtual environments. Architecture, whether physical or virtual, is the expression of a society realized as meaningful space. Physical and virtual architecture have their own constraints and context, yet both use architectural organization as a way to order forms and spaces in the environment. Both strive to create meaningful place by defining space, and both must allow the participant to develop a cognitive map to orient and navigate in the space. The lack of physics of time and space in the virtual realm requires special attention and expression of its architecture in order for the participant to cope with transitions. These issues are exemplified by the development of an on-line gallery of virtual environments. Conclusions reached by the development of this design are discussed in the context of orientation, navigation, transition, enclosure, and scale.

summary A Lagrangean relaxation approach is proposed to provide a lower bound on the optimal solution of the set partitioning problem with side constraints, which is a general methodology to solve a combinatorial optimization problem. This Lagrangean relaxation approach is accomplished by a subgradient optimization procedure which solves at each iteration a special 0-1 knapsack problem. The approach seems to be promising since it produces feasible integer solutions to the side constraints that can hopefully be the optimal solution to most of the instances of the set partitioning problem with side constraints

title On Deep Disjunctive Cutting Planes for Set Partitioning : A Computationally Oriented Research.

summary Several mathematical programming problems can be formulated as Disjunctive Programming Problems. This approach offers a powerful procedure for the generation of new and strong cutting planes with desirable properties. For general integer programs, the traditional cutting plane methodologies proved less efficient than enumerative techniques. However, for certain classes of problems, such as set partitioning, cutting planes are known to be efficient. Since the disjunctive cuts are strong, they can be expected to perform better. This paper reports on computational results with disjunctive B(.) cuts for the set partitioning problem, evaluated in terms of computer resources and other independent measures in solving specific randomly generated test problems under controlled conditions. summary This work is a research on the application of genetic algorithms (GA) to urban growth taking into account the optimization of solar envelope and sunlight in open spaces.It was considered a typical block of a Spanish grid, which is the most common subdivision of the urban land in towns situated in Argentina. Two models are compared, one in which the growth has no more limitations than building codes. The other one, in which the growth incorporates the solar radiation as a desirable parameter.This way of parameterizing configures a bottom-up method of urban growth. No top-down decisions intervenes in the growth process.This tool proves to be useful at early stages of urban planning when decisions—which will influence along the development of the city for a long time—are taken.

summary BIM technology has represented an advance and a break of the design process’ paradigm, impacting both academia and construction market. Reporting a didactic experience in the Civil Engineering graduation, this article aims to understand the teaching and learning process of graphic representation, by using CAD and BIM tools. The research included Literature Review and Empirical Study, whose data collection was based on the application of questionnaires, practical exercises and theoretical test with the students. As a contribution, we highline the complementary nature of the tools and the potentialities of BIM for teaching graphic representation.

summary This article explores the representation of historical transformations in the Square of XV de Novembro, one of Rio de Janeiro's oldest and historically significant locations. A geometric modeling methodology is employed to visually represent the profound alterations in the landscape over time, selecting pivotal periods to offer a detailed spatial perception and virtually reconstruct lost landmarks. The utilization of game engines facilitates a first-person perspective of the model, which could further enhance the immersion. Moreover, this approach enables new interpretations of existing historical documents while also providing new material about Brazil’s and Rio de Janeiro’s history. To this end, the research combines historical simulation with an interpretative investigation, utilizing diverse historical materials. The chosen methodology provides a multifaceted understanding of the location's evolution and its significance in Brazil's history.

title Virtual Wayfinding: A Comparison of Orientation and Navigation Behavior in Built and Virtual Environments

summary In this study we compare the wayfinding behavior of occupants in virtual reality and built spaces. Results show significant differences related to the speed of navigation, geometry of movement, and frequency of stops and turns. Subjective evaluations of spatial characteristics show no significant differences between built and virtual spaces.

summary The demand for sustainable building materials is currently a major concern of society. It is known that the traditional construction industry requires a high consumption of inorganic materials, which is associated with the excessive production of waste. Thus, this article intends to demonstrate the possibility of using the Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique Paste Extrusion Modeling (PEM) in the production of reusable, biodegradable and recyclable construction systems, using a combination of different natural materials that have created multiple pastes with different additives.Cellulose is a natural material - biodegradable, recyclable and low cost - and its implementation aims to change some aspects of the current state of the construction sector and can have a real impact on the exploration of innovative solutions and more sustainable alternative building systems. The integration of AM techniques, PEM method, supported by computational modelling tools, will allow the definition of a building system and its components. Depending on the material used - natural materials or biomaterials - the constraints and limitations of AM will be considered.

summary We will characterize the relationship between Internet of Things (IOT) and Virtual Reality (VR) as the tension between analog and digital domains, organized by several interfaces specifically developed for this study, during de course Interactive Architecture at the Architecture School - UFMG. These interfaces, referred here as programmable meta-objects (MOPs), recombine themselves to form an environment where inputs and outputs of each MOP are made available to other networked MOPs through the Hydra System (!). These MOPs can have both a physical existence (object present in physical space) and a "virtual" existence (it exists in the Virtual Reality environment).

summary In this paper we will present the permeability regimes: concepts conceived to contribute with the understanding of the new roles and necessary skills for the architect and designer to design performative and interactive spaces. This contribution, as will be shown here, is based on theoretical and empirical bases that will address a specific context: the methods for introducing and making tangible the relation between information, human and space for architecture students. Therefore, we will describe the dynamics of an interactive installation developed by undergraduate students, relating it to the permeability regimes.

summary The paper outlines a research project to develop a dynamic simulation of suburbanization processes. The approach to simulating suburban form relies on modelling different interacting processes on various scales. Two layered models are implemented, the Socio-Economic and Zoning model and the Suburban Form model, respectively by means of cellular automata and genetic programming. The Socio-Economic and Zoning model simulates exogenous factors and endogenous processes of large-scale suburban dynamics. The model approximates the area by means of a rectangular grid to the scale of hundred meters. The Suburban Form model uses a smaller grid, to the scale of meters, and is three-dimensional. The resulting dynamic, 3D, fine-scale model will create scenarios of suburban growth, allowing evaluation of their consequences on built environment and landscape.

summary The paper presents an ongoing project to interactively simulate urban and regional dynamics at the building scale. Urban Generator is a system for generating a large number of design solutions and for browsing, searching and structuring the high-dimensional space of the design solutions further to variable and customisable factors defined by the designer. The number of these factors is recognised as large; furthermore they are often ill-defined. Urban Generator does not model every factor; instead it supports the designer in defining the significant factors and their interconnections, then freely exploring the dimensions of the space of the design solutions generated by the system.

summary Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) are optimization techniques that can improve measurable performances of a design. Currently, they see many research interests and are advertised, among generative design, as the next big thing in architecture by some software house. However, they still see limited professional use. This paper, through the analysis of past researches and a case study on an architectural envelope’s shadowing system design, reflects on the reasons for this and on how the use of EA influences the product and the process of architectural design. Also, methodological principles to suit the use of EA in an architectural design process are discussed.
