summary This paper aims to describe the process of digital manufacturing of facial prostheses for patients injured by cancer. For this the proposed innovation is the use of low-cost digital tools, such as photogrammetry, 3D modeling and 3D printing. The main software used are Blender for modeling the prostheses and the add-on OrtogOnBlender for generating photogrammetry. As a result of the process, the following can be observed: 1 - Less invasive approach to the patient; 2 - Low production cost; 3 - Optimization in production time; 4 - Greater anatomy accuracy and prosthesis details; 5 - Documentation through digital recording of the entire process.

summary This paper presents partial results of a research dedicated to the architectural typology of temporary pavilions, focused in research pavilions developed by academic research groups. The relevance of these pavilions is evidenced for the development of new paradigms of design, as well as of the constructive possibilities offered by advanced technologies of digital manufacturing, like robotic arms. These innovative processes have been transported from the academy to the professional branch, but still in a timely application. However, they have already had a profound impact on the academic research institutions, adding a significant theoretical/ practical contribution to the contemporary architectural field.

summary This paper examines the integration of digital tools in architecture, exploring their transformative effects on the design process. Despite the increased control and innovative possibilities these tools provide, their impact on research-driven architectural design studios remains underexplored. The research focuses on the role of digital fabrication, a method that has revolutionized design and construction, but also brings several misperceptions about its role in architectural practice. By analyzing selected architecture offices, the investigation uncovers new modes of design thinking, highlighting the architect's role in solving complex processes and expanding architectural vocabulary. A taxonomy approach is utilized to categorize methods and identify interrelationships within the design process. Ultimately, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of digital tools in project-based research methodologies in architecture, offering insights that challenge traditional practices and pave the way for innovative design mechanisms.

summary Questioning the importance and impact of design thinking methodologies in the architectural design studios is a backbone of architectural education in twenty first century. 3D printing and digital manufacturing are disruptive technologies that are changing architects and designers daily lives. These trends require new skills, based on a deep understanding of digital continuum from design to production, from generation to fabrication. This continuity transcends the merely instrumental contributions of a person-machine relationship to praxis, has begun to evolve as a medium that supports a continuous logic of design thinking and making. Design thinking methodologies associated with digital fabrication emerged as a leading technological and design issue of digital research and design. As designers, we are witnessing a no frontier between computational design and digital fabrication. For this paper is taken into consideration the work of two architecture studios that share a unique background on new methodologies by embracing the digital technology in their own practice. Their work reflects on new design methodologies facing the expansion of digital technology in architectural practice. This paper discusses the possibility of new design thinking methods driven by digital fabrication.

Thus, its scope can be expanded by the enlarged possibilities offered by the new media and methodologies. Today, the computational methods are a crucial medium for architectural design. Not only digital media is augmenting our design capacity in profound ways, but also digital fabrication is establishing itself as a core discipline for architecture. It has the power to link digital design information with physical production processes, thus opening the opportunity to materialize ideas, experiments and investigate physical or digital artifacts during the design process.

summary The emergence of mobile reading devices such as tablets provided a new trend in the distribution of content in the universe of publications. As changes occur, many ways of consuming information are offered by digital devices. Thus, this study evaluated the application of the Info Exame magazine, regarding its accessibility, usability and user experience. As a method, the heuristics focusing on publications for tablets, proposed by Heikkilä (2013), were employed. Finally, the design was conceived as the very information tool, as it facilitates the connection between the print media and digital media.

summary The concept of parametric design combines software and 3D modeling application that provides to designers, architects and engineers a new method for design development. This article aims to create a device for bicycle parking aided by a parametrization process using Grasshopper plug-in. Thus, we develop an algorithm in which its parameters can be modified accordingly to the esthetic-formal configuration required by the project. In order to evaluate the effect of a parametric value over the structure and resulting form, a rendering is created with each parameter change to visualize the resulting design interactively.

summary CAAD education methods are often system-oriented. Software choices have an important role to play in this trend. However, teaching methods must also be taken into consideration. An increasing emphasis has been placed on design-oriented teaching approaches in the last twenty years. By this we mean teaching methods aiming the application area in which computers are to be used, rather than the system’s structures or computer underlying paradigms. The results are mostly courses within programmes adopting design-oriented teaching methods. However, the growing interest in this approach has rarely affected CAAD teaching programmes as a whole. A glance at the syllabus of some CAAD programmes may reveal their system-oriented nature. We describe here a post-graduate programme that has been structured under a design-oriented approach through a set of courses in which the emphasis falls on the application in the architectural design process rather them on the software paradigms or categories.

summary Mass customization, which may lead to greater variety of architectural solutions, seems to be a concept mostly unknown and difficult to grasp or hard to believe by many. We argue in this paper that education may have a rule to play in bringing about a better understanding of these among students and professionals. We show here the results of a survey on people’s beliefs about mass standardization and mass customization and a comparative study of students’ design projects produced under a certain pedagogical strategy and how these might be influenced by their education.

The introduction of parametric design urbanism has great potential because several aspects pertaining to urban design such as density, use, shape, space and type can all be defined parametrically. Thus, this research aims to understand and analyze this theoretical procedure and contemporary methodology of urban design associated to new technologies,. It intends to analyze the advantages, disadvantages, applicability and improvement possibilities of this new way of designing the scale of the city and Brazil.

summary The article is written on a work on Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, it discuss mainly the concept of urban icon. We attempted to infer the aspects that made it as relevant as it is for the urban contest by the analysis of this meaningful architectonic element of this city. Furthermore, we also tried to elaborate, using graphic resources, a representative reading of the city based on it. The research resulted in a sequence of twenty two printed cards, which displays photographs, maps , charges drawings, newspaper articles and chronicles published in the period. Based on this work, a version for digital media is being developed as a site.

summary Although HBIM is nowadays a common practice in processes and activities aimed at the investigation, documentation and conservation of architectural heritage, some doubts are emerging regarding its capabilities of fulfilling architectural heritage representation and semantics requirements. In this context, this work presents Open-ArcH, a digital approach for architectural heritage representation that relies on the integration of HBIM methodology with a knowledge base developed by means of graph databases, with two major objectives: 1) it supports the formalization of the complex semantics that it is necessary for a full comprehension of the artefact, currently poorly managed by HBIM application, and 2) the openness and flexibility ensured by the graph database technology allow for its adoption in heritage investigation and conservation processes by the different actors involved, providing them with the capability of collaborating to the construction of the knowledge base of the artefact.

title Analysing participation in collaborative design environments

summary Computer-supported collaborative design can be realised by a broad range of collaborative environments, each facilitating a different kind of collaboration. Understanding the style of collaboration and the potential for each environment is important when choosing a particular technology. We have developed a virtual world approach to teaching design computing in which students learn through traditional lectures, online seminars, and collaborative design projects. The environment integrates both synchronous and asynchronous communication as well as shared documentation. One side effect of using this environment is the incremental development of a record of the communication and collaboration. This record can be the basis for the analysis of participation in collaboration. We show how text analysis as a part of data mining can be used to analyse different aspects of participation. Specifically, we analyse participation in synchronous communication to evaluate individual contribution. We then analyse asynchronous communication to evaluate the extent of collaboration. The methods presented can be an automated part of the collaborative environment providing information for student evaluation in an educational environment or individual contribution in a professional environment.

summary Much research and several papers have been written in the field of Rapid Prototyping by engineers with a focus on its capability to increase design and manufacturing process and performances. However only few have addressed the use of Rapid Prototyping in the early stages of the design process. Recently with designers using this technology, a new role is beginning to delineate. This paper looks at Rapid Prototyping as a tool for design thought. All design experiments were conducted by the author working in team with design student colleagues. The experiments focussed on non-trivial design problems and were conducted in parallel with the research on the tools used. The design was inspired by questions raised by the research and similarly the research questions were informed by the development of the design. The first section attempts a summary of technical evaluations by the author of selected rapid prototyping based design environments where the experiments occurred. This section reflects the point of view of the operator. The five environment selected are ordered according to their increasing level of sophistication. By providing an account of several experiments, the second part of the paper highlights the areas of the early stages of design where rapid prototyping appeared to be a unique tool in providing valuable feedback to the designer.

title Experiments in Rule Based Design and Computer Generated Physical Prototypes

summary This paper explores some of the opportunities offered by computer aided design to architects, interior designers and industrial designers. It differs from much of the research in the field in the sense that, it expands out of the boundaries of the computer screen by making computer generated physical prototypes using several different Rapid Prototyping technologies.This paper surveys the author's work at the Department of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and more recently the work of his research team at the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The aim of the research is to explore the designer's advantages and limitations using rule based design and rapid prototyping techniques and searching for novel research questions. For each of the experiments proposed I will describe (1) the set up of the experiment (2) the methodology used to conduct the experiments, (3) highlights its advantages and limitations and (4) proposes further possible research questions. Throughout the paper I will focus especially on the unexpected outcomes.
