title Architecture and Neuroscience: Green Areas Contributions to Hospitalized Patients’ Homeostasis
source Gomez, P and Braida, F (eds.), Designing Possibilities - Proceedings of the XXV International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2021), Online, 8 - 12 November 2021, pp. 927–939
summary Hospitalization is, for the patient, a neuropsychophysiological stressor, thus pertinent theories point to architectural stimuli as a tool for the homeostasis restoration and consequent well-being. Furthermore, they compile advantages to the patients’ treatment and highlight, mainly, the natural environments benefits, which is elucidated by the Biophilia theory. Through literature review and analysis of applied research in national and international hospitals, extracted from indexing databases of scientific production in the 2000-2020 timeframe, it was found that these areas [a] promote stimuli that enhance emotions and positive feelings; [b] act to restore stress and anxiety; [c] reduce pain, analgesic intake and length of stay; and [d] increase patient satisfaction. By sharing the results of this research, the objective is, in addition to stimulating future research on the organism behavior in the environments, to indicate perspectives for hospital ambiences.

title Digital Creativity: Pedagogical Strategies for Design Teaching
source Gomez, P and Braida, F (eds.), Designing Possibilities - Proceedings of the XXV International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2021), Online, 8 - 12 November 2021, pp. 401–419
summary This paper presents a discussion about design pedagogy strategies focused on students’ processes rather than on their architectural objects. The hypothesis here is that critical and creative autonomy of students can be developed by the teaching of design thinking simultaneously with operative digital tools within design disciplines. An experiment was made in an introductory design discipline in a private Brazilian Architecture School and results show how students’ skills and knowledge about design grow faster when a digital creative culture is fostered within the design studio.

summary Extended Reality (XR) technologies have the potential to help and improve the teaching and design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as they offer different ways of perceiving and representing space and various functionalities. Therefore, it is important to systematize scientific production in this area. This research aims to identify and analyze the main applications of XR in teaching and in the design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as well as its benefits and limitations. A systematic literature review of publications on CumInCAD and SBTIC, from 2015 to 2022, was carried out. The results show the growing emphasis of XR as a medium that offers benefits both for teaching and design practice. However, there are still limitations to be overcome to make XR more inclusive. As a contribution, a greater understanding of how XR has been applied in teaching is provided along with a reflection on its impact on the means of representation in the design process.

summary We now live on the digital era. Technological innovations don’t stop to come to light, and our society little by little become more permeable and sensible to the present-day. The architect who refuses to just repeat architecture styles enters in a avant-garde position and gives intellectual impulses towards finding through your work a original proposal that will answer in fact the demands of a society that is correlate with your present-time. How to teach him to deal with the novel situations of the digital era and the paradigms to be used as basis and how should be the new pedagogical structure?

title Design of Bistable Deployable Scissor Structures Consisting of Translational Units Based on Flat Retraction Logic
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2023.2.541
source Immanuel Koh, Dagmar Reinhardt, Mohammed Makki, Mona Khakhar, Nic Bao (eds.), HUMAN-CENTRIC - Proceedings of the 28th CAADRIA Conference, Ahmedabad, 18-24 March 2023, pp. 541–550
summary The subject of this research is the study of the retraction change mode of deployable scissor grids based on the Hoberman mechanism. The retraction logic of this type of flat mechanism can be changed mainly by moving the pivot point of the rod and using bistable deployable scissor structures consisting of translational units. Therefore, the mechanism can remain flat while it retracts, and the irregular translational units allow for a greater variety of surface variations in the shape of the mechanism. Through the study of the scissor system, a simplified mathematical model is used to explore the geometric potential, and a formula for complete flat retraction is derived. Following the input of defined data using digital tools, the remaining translational scissor units that conform to the retraction logic are generated. Then, irregular linkage mechanisms are created that can retract from 3D to 2D, with the opening mode not being limited to the radial sphere or other mean geometries. These results provide a unique retraction mode for deployable scissor grids, thus facilitating the collection and transportation of such mechanisms in practical applications.

summary The emergence of virtual reality technology now brings the possibility of new design methods. Virtual reality technology allows architects to feel space better and express design ideas more intuitively. With the interactive perception equipment and VR glasses, geometric shapes can be created and modified in a virtual environment, replacing the mouse and keyboard to complete the creation of space in the early stage of the design process. At present, the application of virtual reality in the architectural design process has some problems include unnatural interaction, low accuracy, high work cost. This paper will summarize the interactive methods of virtual reality technology in various current cases and compare the input and output of the device by analyzing the matrix method. We can explore interactions that are beneficial to architectural design. Using these interactive methods, we can expand the interface relationship between humans and the virtual environment.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2021.2.555
source Stojakovic, V and Tepavcevic, B (eds.), Towards a new, configurable architecture - Proceedings of the 39th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, University of Novi Sad, Novi Sad, Serbia, 8-10 September 2021, pp. 555-564
summary Creating a visual 3D model is a vital part of the architectural design process. In architectural scenes, immersion is important to perceive the connection between various aspects. The general interaction cannot meet the needs of immersion. The immersion and interaction of virtual reality (VR) allows architects to feel and design spaces better. However, VR is currently mainly used only for visualization and walkthrough of the architectural space. The design process is still done using modeling software. This paper proposes a method of architectural design in virtual reality, allowing designers to experience the model created in real-time and improve the design. The use of visual mesh positioning and ray limits can help users create accurate architectural models. The paper also applied the innovative design method to the participatory design process and showed that architectural design in virtual reality can improve design quality and better meet the needs of users.

title Smart Semantic Query of Design Information in a Case Library
source Digital Design - Research and Practice [Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 1-4020-1210-1] Tainan (Taiwan) 13–15 October 2003, pp. 125-136
summary This paper is aimed to establish a smart query mechanism based on the semantic relationship among design cases in a case library, Case Base for Architecture (CBA). A case is composed with three levels of design information: “general”, “analytical” and “recommendation”. The data mining technique is applied to analyse the case information of CBA and extract a list of keywords of design concepts and knowledge from the analytic information and recommendation. By clustering and ranking the semantic relations of those keywords on the strength of machine and addressing them to selected design cases, we can organise the semantic relations among cases. Based on the results, we build a primary query interface to help users to retrieve and inspire their associative reasoning for design thinking. The semantic query mechanism is presented and discussed.

title The STG Pattern: Application of a “Semantic-Topological-Geometric” Information Conversion Pattern to Knowledge Modeling in Architectural Conceptual Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2016.435
source Living Systems and Micro-Utopias: Towards Continuous Designing, Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2016) / Melbourne 30 March–2 April 2016, pp. 435-444
summary Generative modelling tools have become a popular means of composing algorithms to generate complex building forms at the conceptual design stage. However, composing algorithms in order to meet the requirements of general design criteria, and communicating those criteria with other disciplines by means of generative algorithms still faces technical challenges. This paper proposes the use of a “Se- mantic-Topological-Geometric (STG)” pattern to guide architects in composing algorithms for representing, modelling, and validating de- sign knowledge and criteria. The STG pattern aims to help architects for converting semantic information concerning the situations of a project into design criteria, which are usually composed of topological relations among design elements, in order to explore the geometric properties of building components by means of generated 3D models.
