summary This paper presents the process and outcomes of a thematic winter school on designing sustainable soundscapes. It aims to present a new parametric tool: Esquis’Sons! that has been initiated during a French research project on sustainable sound environment and then developed as part of Theo Marchal’s PhD. Combining Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, the Esquis’Sons! tool has allowed the integration of the sound dimension during the design phase of architectural spaces. The thematic school aims to test the validity of this tool through experimenting it with multidisciplinary teams involving architecture, urban design, acoustics, art, landscape and sociology. We have chosen to use this methodology on two urban districts located in Grenoble, France in order to auralize in real time the different intervention scenarios proposed by participants for ameliorating the experience of sound in the two districts.

summary Since the 80s, several researches have developed the theoretical notions of sound effects, sound proxemy, city sound identities, sound comfort, architectural sound prototypes which were meant to help designers consider sound in their projects. Nevertheless, taking care of the inherent sound dimensions in architectural urban projects remains an unresolved challenge. The researches of the last 30 years have shown how the sound environment qualities are forgotten in favour of visual qualities. This article presents a new method dedicated to generating simple sound sketches for architectural conception while preserving the complexity of acoustic simulation. This paper argues that the Esquis'sons! sound sketch tool reconfigures architectural design by considering an innovative view its the temporality, allowed by numeric designing tools able to intervene and offer a continuous feedback regarding sound environment.

summary This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cybernetic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.

summary Complexity as a result of improved design capabilities through the use of computer tools was introduced in the architectural debate since these became irreplaceable. On the other hand, not every designer is genuinely aware of the logical implications that the use of these tools may entail. Used as a simple emulation of enhanced traditional design tools—drawings and models, they do not alter the process of design significantly. However, the potential of such tools beyond their instrumentality introduces designers into the realm of digital consciousness. This paper analyzes complexity as an inherent quality of computer aided architectural design in relation to four different digitally conscious design strategies. First, the increase of complexity involved in digital architectural designs because of their potentiality to manage enormous amounts of differentiated information. Second, the complexity inherent to an open form such as parametric or generative designs may be defined. Third, the use of the computer as a smart partner involved in the design process —i.e., form finding strategies— rather than as a simple efficient machine able to repeat our abilities faster and more effectively in certain roles of the design process. Finally, it analyzes the possibility of generating parameterized typologies as a result of the openness of form, as well as the increased complexity that randomness may introduce in algorithmic design. The paper concludes with reflections on complexity vs. simplexity considering the fact that the simplicity characteristic of Modernism aesthetics and constructive values collide with the baroque formal complexity achieved in generative design.

summary Digital fabrication has become the true counterpoint to computer aided design in architecture. Thanks to new C.A.D./C.A.M. technologies architectural design can now manufacture complex buildings that only a decade ago could have been almost impossible to develop. This convergence between C.A.D./C.A.M. technologies is producing a trend from construction to manufacturing. Arbitrariness of architectural form should not be confused with arbitrariness of architectural design, the latter being contradictory with the very essence of design. Conventional or digital architecture must achieve design consistency and must rely on architecture’s basic principle, that of necessity. New materiality is a term being coined in relation to digital fabrication and the way it should address materiality in architecture. Innovation in the use of conventional materials, the ways in which they may be manufactured or tiled, as well as the emergence of new materials may outline what new materiality is about.

summary The interesting distinction established by Collin Rowe and Robert Slutzky regarding the concept of transparency in modern architecture can be further enriched in relation to digital architecture and the new ways in which architects may address the design of material limits. The polarity between materiality and virtuality, between being and appearance is challenged with the concept of eversion and could lead to what we have referred to as virtual transparency. The intricate performative latticed skins designed and fabricated thanks to C.A.D./C.A.M. techniques have produced different states of transparent visual effects that either conceal or partially suggest silhouettes producing latticed transparencies. Finally, the development of next generation liquid crystal displays may introduce highly responsive transparent membranes in architecture allowing a one step further virtual transparency that could be described as translucent transparency.

summary The paper is a theoretical approach regarding digital architecture, performance and time. It tries to reflect on the philosophical taxonomy of time -cosmological, phenomenological and narrative- and how digitally conscious architectural design developed by architects, media artists, engineers and multidisciplinary teams address the engagement of the architectural space in real-time. The traditional static conception of architecture is altered through performativity and the ideals of permanence and endurance radically questioned. The research also constitutes a reflection on interaction, participation and performance in an ample sense with regard to performative architecture and some urban implications it may entail. Various examples addressing these topics mainly installed or built during the last decade exemplify the different issues that the paper reflects on. A critical reading of the installations and the intelligent-façades commented is posed to the reader together with the conceptual implications the different performative approaches involve and the goals they may achieve. The question remains if buildings instead of being or meaning should, more than ever, perform.

summary Diagrams have an extraordinary potential as a tool for the analysis of architectural and urban problems.They can also be considered a design strategy in themselves according to Eisenman's understanding of this graphic notation system. Diagrams have proved to be a valid design tool for architecture beyond the professional practice within the design studio. Students were given a design tool which was alien to their previous practices and it worked well as a propositional graphic device for the design of an architectural artefact. As a graphic tool that may be embodied in grids the possibility to enrich the design by superimposition techniques may well serve as a trigger for collaborative work, embedding in the design different layers of meaning and design solutions proposed by various students enhancing a level of complexity which the proposal of a single student may not achieve. From a didactic point of view, the use of these design strategy among the class, enabled to tackle different problems so that the work in the urban scale was also successfully addressed as part of the course aims.

summary This research tries to reflect on the idea of digitally conscious design, from the inception to the manufacturing process of a prototype. A theoretical reflection on the topic is followed by the discussion about the results at two different universities (Alicante and Naples) where students have been proposed a similar assignment: a digitally conscious design of a lamp. In Alicante, the methodological approach was guided by the relation of the ideation process and the use of specific digital fabrication strategies; students were encouraged to develop and rework their designs taking into account the way in which they should be digitally fabricated. In Naples the teaching proposal involved a disciplinary approach; a deep understanding of the digital fabrication processes including the manufacturing limitations of the machinery employed involving a precise geometric control over the design. In both cases, students had to face a real study case of the design and production making use of digital tools. This comprehensive approach implied the consideration of the project as a process making students aware of the difficulties of getting their ideas materialised through digital fabrication and how their designs had to evolve in order to step over the problems encountered in the manufacturing process in different ways.

summary With an ever-increasing index of digital artifacts, we have begun to exhaust variation as an adaptive technique. The problem with incremental modulation (here understood as sequential and slowly progressing change of a set of parameters within a field condition) is that in essence it leads to morphologically equivalent and, hence, repetitive patterns of habitation. While the role of variation proved key in pushing forward an essential body of research testing and optimizing principles of mass customization, its residual effects become critically disconcerting. This paper presents an investigation of tectonic mutations for the generation of form, seen through data simulation experiments and machining artifacts. Through several projects we investigate the effects of ornament created as a result of the new relationship between generative modeling, simulation, and fabrication in the digital age. Subject to (de)generative mutation techniques, ornament can be under-stood as a result of overlaid data, whether the data is performance related or not, in both massing and surface conditions. This new working methodology will mitigate between the incertitude regarding time, history and memory, and by reinventing their relation it will reassess ornament’s agency within the digital culture. Design methods are extended by exploring, collecting, analyzing, and representing data through various materialization processes. Design is therefore reconsidered as being injected with the concepts of data driven design and dependent on the inter-play between performance and aesthetics. In this way, we consider the footprint - or the subsequent impact - of the human onto the nonhuman using artificial intelligence as a medium. These intentionally or accidentally engraved layers of information begin to describe potential trajectories of novel survival modes in the Anthropocene.

summary This paper investigates the role technology and materials play in making meaningful connections between people, architectural space and the workplace. It indicates that design can synergize with responsive technology and material systems to leverage new power for future workplace interaction design. We have created a spatial prototype paired with a series of simulations that act as a proposal to stimulate workplace interaction. The project employs a responsive ceiling that combines a fluid computational pattern with temperature-responsive bi-material laminates with thermochromic coatings and electrically programmed micro-controllers. The project is then connected to a computer code that computes readings based upon ongoing interactions with humans wearing body sensors. The methodology categorizes the simulation results into aroused states and calm states. As the computational patterns and colors change, we are made aware of the relationships between space, technology, and the human sensorium. This conversation brings insight into how we can design more effectively for workplace interactions.

summary This paper discusses the creation of a new sand-based material, performative testing, and the computational logic involved in the design of a prototypical architectural system. Dune sand is known to be an unstable material compared to river or marine sand and as a result it is not normally used for construction. Because of this, desert regions have grown a reliance upon imported materials creating massive sustainability issues due to large scale global shipping, importation and resource extraction. This research indicates there is a viable opportunity to leverage dune sand as an ongoing line of inquiry for material science and design in local desert regions. It establishes that there is very little architectural research being done in this particular area. The methodology begins with experiments in bio-material using dune sand as a compound, and then establishes a construction system based upon a manifold of experiments. Along with material investigations, the process uses a Scientific Testing Method (STM) and Hypothesis in Action (HIA) as part of the testing methodology.

summary Arbor is a data spatialization of the urban forest of Palo Alto, California. The sculptural installation consists of 120 ribs arranged radially within King Plaza fronting Palo Alto City Hall. It uses the database of over 45,000 public trees in the city’s Open Data Portal (City of Palo Alto, n.d.) as the basis for a collective, three-dimensional map of one aspect of the city’s ecology. The installation performs like a compass, with each rib corresponding directionally to a respective “pie slice” of territory raiding outwards from City Hall. The trees are represented by bumps on the outer edge of each rib, so the zones with more trees result in ribs with more relief. The ribs are arranged in a circle, gradually changing in height, profile, and color to create a dynamic form that is different from each side

summary This paper describes the Buoyant Ecologies project, an ongoing research collaboration between architects, marine ecologists, and manufacturers focused on developing integrated architectural, ecological, and material responses to climate change and sea level rise. The research employs techniques of design computation and robotic fabrication to develop an approach to coastal resilience that is rooted in material performance as it relates to marine habitats. The project explores the design and production of highly performative fiber-reinforced polymer substrates that interact productively with the underwater ecosystem to promote multi-scalar habitats for invertebrate animals, encouraging ecological diversity and serving as wave-attenuating structures that mitigate coastal erosion. In this regard, the research leverages computational workflows of modeling, simulation, and fabrication to interface between human and nonhuman species in a way that benefits the broader ecosystem. The paper discusses an iterative prototyping process that has led to the design and construction of the Float Lab, a larger-scale prototype of a floating breakwater.

summary Emerging technologies of design and production have largely changed the role of drawings within the contemporary design process from that of design generators to design products. As architectural design has shifted from an analog drawing-based paradigm to that of a computational model-based paradigm, the agency of the drawing as a critical and important form of design representation has greatly diminished. As our design tools have increasingly become computational and the production of our drawings have become predominantly automated, this paper examines the effects on the architectural discipline and attempts to catalog examples of how artists, designers, architects, and programmers have used rule-based techniques in the process of drawing as a critical act in their process. Furthermore, the paper presents the Drawing Codes project, an ongoing research and exhibition platform that critically investigates the intersection of code and drawing: how rules and constraints inform the ways architects document, analyze, represent, and design the built environment. The project features commissioned drawings by a range of contemporary architects and designers as a means of gathering a diverse set of perspectives on how computational techniques, but more importantly, computational thinking, can reexamine the role of architectural drawing as a creative and critical act.
