title Putting It All Together: Towards a Pattern Language for Interaction Design Reports

summary Pattern languages are representations that have been used in architecture and urban design for about twenty years. They focus on the interaction between physical form and social behavior, and express design solutions in an understandable and generalizable form. But pattern languages are not simply set of patterns intended to be universally applied; instead, they are actually meta-languages which, when used in a particular situations, generate situated design languages. This report describes a CHI 97 workshop which explored the utility of pattern languages for interaction design. We discuss the workshop's rationale, the structure and process of the workshop, and some of the workshop's results. In particular, we describe some patterns developed as part of the workshop, and our consequent reflections on the use of patterns and pattern languages as lingua franca for interaction design. This report concludes with a bibliography on pattern languages and related matters that spans architecture, software design, and organizational design.

summary The factors limiting the efficient delivery and presentation of multimedia material in the cellular environment are, among others, the low bandwidth of the transmission channel(s) and the modest capabilities of truly mobile terminals. The ACTS 1 project MObile Media and ENTertainment Services (MOMENTS) is leveraging the usage of state-of-the-art technique for the handling of vector graphics and animation contents, obtained through very low data transmission channels, in order to provide veru attractive multimedia services in that environment. This paper focuses on the achievements obtained within MOMENTS in regard to the handling of dynamic 2D/3D graphics for the projected wireless multimedia services.

title Pattern Matching for Decision Support

summary In this paper is discussed how we can use pattern matching techniques in combination with object orientation to support decision makers in arranging offices and industrial and commercial facilities in existing urban areas. The method used is based on the findings of a Ph.D. project almost finishedwhen writing this. The tool under development is specifically useful for rehabilitation of deteriorated industrial or commercial areas.I consider such an area already occupied and surrounded with all kinds of urban objects and connected to all kinds of infrastructure. I can describe this area in available objects and facilities. Furthermore we can describe the areas capacity left within the infrastructure, the capacity in forexample work force or clients and the available band width in noise or pollution. By describing the area in terms of availability of capacity to absorb or produce flows of people, goods, energy and information we sketch the room available for certain types of industrial or commercial facilities. I developed a technique to describe industrial and commercial facilities in such a way that we enable the match between these and the characteristics of an area available. Pattern matching techniquesenable the system to generate best matches between available areas, locations and facilities. This model can be adapted in several object oriented geographical information systems and be integrated with other information systems that for example calculate the pollution of certain kinds of facilities. The rules to match with are partly based on objective, measurable data like available capacity on the electricity network and needed electrical power for certain facilities. Other matching rules are based on political norms on for example acceptable pollution levels and suggested pollution of facilities. The paper presents the problem area of industrial area rehabilitation, describes the architecture of the modeling technique and presents the first findings of implementation studies.

summary Dans cet article, nous nous intéresserons à trois expériences pédagogiques dans le cadre de l'enseignement de l'infographie. Il s'agit de montrer que l'infographie et l'histoire de l'architecture, champs apparemment distincts, peuvent faire l'objet d'approches transversales. Nous commencerons par l?examen de la modélisation par description textuelle pour ensuite nous intéresser à la modélisation procédurale à base de connaissances architecturales. Ces modes d?accès et de constitution "alternatifs" de modèles infographiques représentent un moyen privilégié de confronter la modélisation infographique à l'analyse architecturale notamment par le biais de la modélisation du savoir architectural. Nous verrons comment ces exercices confrontent nos étudiants à la fois à l'analyse architecturale, à une approche de la programmation structurée ou orientée-objet ainsi qu'à une utilisation "critique" des outils de conception assistée. Nous terminerons par une expérience d'animation infographique qui questionne la pertinence de l'image de synthèse comme support à l'analyse architecturale et à la communication de celle-ci.

summary The impact of computational grammatical design on pedagogy has received little attention in art education due to the dominant modes of traditional approaches to art and design education. This paper explores the pedagogical implications of grammatical strategies using computers for judgements of design within an art educational setting. Grammatical strategies are studied for their effect on the judgements of novice artists in a new media educational context. It is argued that concepts of grammar and views of contingency are used in a variety of senses in the conception and form making of artists; that finding methods for discussing and utilising complex visual information is aided by grammatical formalisation; that these strategies are evidently effective at both early and mature stages of the realisation of a project. The research explores the relation between computer and art on three levels in which grammar is used: as a sense of grammar, as a computational paradigm and as a description of a kind of computer program. Grammatical formalism is apparent in two dimensional linear and non-linear animations using Photoshop, Premiere and Director, and in solid modelling programs such as Extreme 3D, Form Z, Strata Studio Pro, 3D Studio Max and SoftImage. Web site construction also impacts on the judgements of 2D and 3D design. Computational grammatical programs generate forms that reflect alternative understandings of art and design. Art practise is defined in terms of developing consistent and appropriate design language for the contingency at hand. Form making using grammatical tools, both recursive and array types, is discussed in terms of their applicability and educative value. Reference is made to formal qualities for critique and strategic capability of alternative pedagogy for generation of forms. Examples provided show how simple rule sets develop into complex derivational sequences that challenge traditional strategies for computer imaging. The paper demonstrates the value of a sense of grammars for novice art and design practitioners by using first hand examples of experimental work at the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia. For novice artists and designers, grammars in conjunction with reflective practice is offered as a useful mind set that supports an interest in actively defining a new kind of art. Illustrations provided show the utility of a contingent sense of grammar for pedagogy and highlights the significant role of grammar in pedagogy.

title Innovative application of directional boring procedures for replacing failed inductive loop detectors

summary Actuated traffic signal controllers typically depend on inductive loop detectors to determine demand for a particular signal phase. The basic philosophy of these controllers is to only provide a green indication to a particular lane group when there is a vehicle waiting. If an inductive loop detector fails, it must be put in recall mode so that the lane group with the corresponding failed detector is serviced every cycle. When actuated controllers operate in this mode, the performance of the signalized intersection degenerates. Since the vast majority of actuated intersections operate with inductive loop detectors it is useful to have maintenance procedures that can be used to replace loop detectors that have failed due to pavement distress. This paper describes a procedure that has been developed using directional boring equipment to install a micro loop below the surface of the pavement where it is not subject to pavement distress. The authors believe this procedure will provide a cost effective method of restoring actuated control on approaches or lanes groups where the pavement condition makes it unfeasible to install or re-install a traditional saw cut loop detector.

summary The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and the World Wide Web (WWW) offer new opportunities to communicate an architect's design intent throughout the design process. We have investigated the use of VRML in the production and communication of construction documents, the final phase of architectural building design. A prototype, experimental Web site was set up and used to disseminate design data as VRML models and HTML text to the design client, contractor, and fabricators. In this paper, we discuss the way our construction documents were developed in VRML, the issues we faced implementing it, and critical feedback from the users of the Web space/site. Finally, we suggest ways to enhance the VRML specification which would enable its widespread use as a communication tool in the design and construction industries. summary The remarkable advances in the technology of computer systems, including software, hardware, and networks, continuously give us new avenues to be utilized in education. The pedagogic strategy to be developed in the utilization of digital graphic systems applied to three-dimensional design in architecture (both in the design and virtual expression of objects or already designed architectural groups) is still changing with the times.Therefore, the Department, as an extension of its experience with this type of development and as a response to deal with special situations such as large numbers of students, develops this new proposal, which is currently being used. This project uses the implementation, structuring, and building of a virtual site as an informatics classroom, utilizing multimedia systems, to be used as a support for acquiring knowledge during the learning that takes place doing the coursework. This setting would allow for the feedback between the instructor and the student to be on-going, hence both groups being efficiently motivated through examples and opportunities of how to do the following: utilize appropriate technology, manipulate the right information, utilize the right kind of software programs and techniques, revamp the knowledge, and benefit from using the appropriate digital techniques for each specific case of architectural design and expression.

summary The twentieth century is the century of convergence. No other century has witnessed the development and profusion of new ideas as the twentieth century, and no other century has experienced the range and scope of events that transpired globally to the extent as this century. Various historical formations and discoveries, unleashed by the Enlightenment, have profoundly changed and transformed the course of human civilization and lead to the maturation of the idea of modernity in this century. With two years left to the start of the next millennium, we are experiencing the effects of modernity that have channeled powerful innovations into the dawn of a new era that could lead, potentially, beyond modernity. More than anything, it signals one of the major premises of the enlightenment to radicalize the substance of nature through the substance of reason and, thereby, altering the modality of the cultural universe of humanity into a genuine cosmopolitical concept. The synthesis of energy, matter and information into a three-parameter system of explanation has created conditions that allow us to think the unthinkable and extend our imagination to the limits of the conceivable. Modernity, from a metaphysical standpoint, brings to light the concept of a transcendental reason that aims to clarify the conditions of possibility for reason as an apriori given. As a consequence, it paved the way for a systemic constitution of a cosmic concept of reason that partakes in the arrival of alien intelligence and one that seems destined to project itself into an ontological domain of its own making. If modernity is an unfinished project, as claimed by some, its program is, nonetheless, being transformed into a cosmogenetic principle where synthesis is the pre-eminent outcome of a return to a second nature, i.e., a transcendent concept of nature. Even though the transcendental dialectic of critical reason is directed towards the timeless unity of the unconditioned, the genitive logic implicit within cosmic reason, itself a form of recursive self-propelling intelligence, appears to be animated by a projective force capable of engendering and pro-creating in the evolutionary sense of the term.

summary The following pictures come from a work in progress at the School of Architecture of Laval University, done in collaboration with the "Centre de développement économique et urbain de la Ville Québec" (CDEU). The 3D models from which the pictures were generated, have been created by students at the School of architecture (part of this work is illustrated). The project started at the beginning of the summer 97 by the modeling competition of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Church, located in Québec City Saint-Sauveur neighborhood. The works continued during the summers of 1997 and 1998 and will resume this summer. To date, this ongoing project has given to nine students the opportunity to model 19 churches to a level of details useful to professionals.

title The Usability of Transparent Overview Layers

summary Viewports into large visual workspaces are sometimes supplemented by a separate window that displays a miniaturized overview of the entire workspace. Instead of this separate window, we have layered a transparent version of the overview atop the viewport. Because the overview fills the display, it becomes the largest size possible. An exploratory study indicates that people can use this unusual system, where they switch between layers when performing a construction task.

summary The computer impact over daily objects world: methodological reflection from the Philips design team workshop "Vision of the Future".The impact of computers in the industrial design world is often limited to the condition of tool, used in the conception process, and, in a minor scale, it is shown integrating and reprocessing the objects, and the every day rituals that nourish them. The integration of microelectronics into the world of objects has been given theoric basement by those who are responsible for technological development (which we describe in this work), displaying several trends tendencies towards interactive, flexibility and, dematerialization and loss of leading role of the object by its integration in the net. The "Vision of the Future" experience, accomplished by the Philips design team, is a look, from the point of view of design, about this subject. The exploration of this new experience through the world of the objects of the future, shows us that the technologies are far away from dematerializing culture, and even threat the leading role of the object. Many of the products that are studied in Philips work-shop, are recreations of old objects but with new functional possibilities. We can see that, although technology allows rituals to be destroyed, yet they preserve themselves deflecting the logical evolution of technology. In this study, we display a methodology to generate interactive objects, following the most significant examples of the work we studied.
