summary Contemporary multimedia research address the possibilities and consequences of integrating various techniques to produce single user based applications (singularity). There is a need for utilising current multimedia techniques; to explore the potential of multi-models (theoretically) to generate modelling information that could be shared simultaneously. The problems are confined to understanding and managing the issues that influence the so-called ´target and product models´. This paper introduces and elaborates on such problems. It provides a theoretical and another practical framework, the 3D-CAD Modelling Paradigm, based upon completed results of modelling. There is a suggested evidence that there might be advantages in standardising the process of modelling and knowledge representation. The paper stresses that the composition of a model should differ from another to reflect its unique characteristics (singularity). Though, it is essential that such models should conform and respond to the well defined and shared criteria (pluralism).

Building materials are usually applied as finishing textures to complement the visual effect of the geometry. This paper attempts to investigate the limitations of commonly used CAAD software in terms of encouraging an intuitive thinking about the physical characteristics of building materials in the design studio environment. A case study involving 90 students is presented. title Cellular Texture Generator for Architectural Models

summary Cellular materials are used extensively in architectural settings. These materials usually have well defined geometry such as brick, stone and tiles. Patterns created with cellular materials are mostly the product of an intuitive design process that goes through cycles of synthesis and reflection until reaching final solution. Therefore interactivity is critical to intuitive designs. This paper presents a system that enables interactive creation of 3D cellular textures. It recognizes critical design areas that can have special design consideration such as edges. The system makes use of existing graphic engines and provides an intuitive interface to create patterns interactively. Rendering time is also considered through defining multiple levels of details for cells so it looks convincing in different scales. The paper presents results with an implementation of cellular texture generation system. It also shows some examples of brick walls generated with this implementation.

summary The research is based on the theory of Space syntax (Hillier and Hanson, 1983). Just as the backbone is essential to compose the human body, two sorts of backbones of the outer spatial configuration of campus are proposed and defined in this thesis. The first is syntactically abstract, which is constituted with the axial lines to represent the relations between the buildings located in campus, and to characterize the essential spatial configuration of campus. The second is a road network which could be represented as a realistic backbone for human activities, and through which human get personal impression and knowledge of outer space of campus. Based on the concept of the backbone, several spatial patterns of campuses are explored and extracted, and the relationships with the spatial cognition and comprehension are quantitatively evaluated.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

title Structural Composite Members in Architecture Fabricated by CAD/CAE/CAM Technology

summary The doctoral research in this dissertation is aimed at exploring new materials and innovative methods for fabricating complex-shaped buildings, which have surfaced as a prevailing trend in architecture today. Over the past few years, the field of architecture has witnessed revolutionary changes in design. The recent completion of Frank O. Gehry's new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, brought unprecedented attention to complex-shaped, non-conventional designs and its influence on the global architectural trend has been immense. In following these latest trends, the author was drawn to the issues concerning construction materials and methods that are being currently adopted in realizing these complicated designs. It is perhaps inevitable that the traditional steel construction methods, suitable for use in the conventional linear shapes, face tremendous challenges and limitations in building such complex-shaped designs. In the author's opinion, the next step to go from here is to seek joint efforts between the architectural field and the engineering field to search for a new methodology which will best serve the contemporary design style. This research first focused on examining the problems that traditional methods pose for the new complex-shaped buildings. Paying attention to Gehry's recent projects, the author was able to identify major difficulties in association with representing and constructing these complicated shapes, mainly in terms of the relationship between the primary structure and the envelope surface. The second part of the research moved on to proposing a new alternative to the traditional methods, by utilizing polymer composite materials (PCM) as construction material and employing advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technologies. More specifically, the author has attempted to present effective theories in support of the two following ideas: (1) circular tubes made of PCM are the most promising alternative to regular steel members, especially steel tubes, to follow the envelope surface of the complex shaped building. (2) state-of-the-art CAD/CAE/CAM technologies are the most essential tools to achieve the geometrical and functional quality of the proposed new material. In the second phase, the primary focus of the quantitative approach was on fabricating an experimental model (1:1 scale prototype) called “ a unit of boundary structures”, the basic unit of structure system that wraps a complex-shaped building's entire territory . summary Visually impaired people represent a large amount of the Brazilian population. However, although a wide range of existing legislation ensures accessibility, most of the Brazilian public spaces are inadequate to accommodate disabled citizens. In this context, this paper presents a digital device, which combines the smartphone technologies with Arduino microcontrollers, for orientation and obstacle detection. We tested the minimum viable product and the first vest prototype through a user-centered usability test, which combines HCI assessments to other techniques, such as semi-structured interviews. As known, these wearable devices and mobile applications are in the center of the Internet of Things discussion. This study is expected to be an alternative for the urban mobility of visually impaired people, allowing them to have a more active and independent behavior in public spaces.

summary Architects usually design ideation and conception by hand-sketching. Sketching is a direct expression of the architect’s creativity. But 2D sketches are often vague, intentional and even ambiguous. In the research of sketch-based modeling, it is the most difficult part to make the computer to recognize the sketches. Because of the development of artificial intelligence, especially deep learning technology, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown obvious advantages in the field of extracting features and matching, and Generative Adversarial Neural Networks (GANs) have made great breakthroughs in the field of architectural generation which make the image-to-image translation become more and more popular. As the building images are gradually developed from the original sketches, in this research, we try to develop a system from the sketches to the images of buildings using CycleGAN algorithm. The experiment demonstrates that this method could achieve the mapping process from the sketches to images, and the results show that the sketches’ features could be recognised in the process.By the learning and training process of the sketches’ reconstruction, the features of the images are also mapped to the sketches, which strengthen the architectural relationship in the sketch, so that the original sketch can gradually approach the building images, and then it is possible to achieve the sketch-based modeling technology.

summary Architectural design processes imply complexity at every stage of the development of a project. On one hand, this complexity is rarely taken into consideration by the currently used CAD programs. On the other hand, recent theoretical researches indicate that a large proportion of architectural design processes are based on precedents as a source of inspiration or as a basis for reflection. A precedent is usually seen as a sketch, as a picture, as a drawing or as a visual memory of an architectural object or space. Recent research enlarges this concept into at least two directions: (1) precedents are looked for not only in the architectural space, and (2) it’s not only the visual aspect of a precedent that is important, but also its internal logic and structure, the know-how associated to it, and the actions needed for its creation. Usually, architectural design knowledge is implicitly presented by precedents. This design knowledge is applied to design-objects having various levels of generality, at different states of detailing and expected to be dynamically transformed during the following stages of design. Having in mind these characteristics of precedents called for during the architectural design process, we propose to join their visual representation with a description of their most important characteristics: structural organisation, way of production, functional organisation, spatial composition, etc. These can be either described or modelled by the original author, or interpreted by the precedent’s ‘user’. These design-knowledge models can be of use in several ways: (1) providing a library for search of precedents by semantic analogy, (2) offering ready-to-use capsules of design knowledge for new design situations, (3) enriching the ‘design world’ of the user-architect. We have implemented the proposed method of complexity-supporting precedents’ modelling by the means of the functional programming SGDL-Scheme language. The models (a programming function or a structure of programming functions) describe the actions necessary for the creation of an object (or its digital representation) and the structural organisation between the models in order to generate new, more complex ones. The concept of describing actions instead of shapes, provides a multi-level applicability of the models. Visual presentations (digital maquettes, images or animations) of newly generated objects can be stored in a visual-library of the assistant, thus creating a new ‘precedent’ that can be referred to in future by visual analogy. The design-knowledge that has generated the new object, is stored and linked to the image. Thus, the visual stimulus of a precedent can be joined with functional characteristics, production procedures and/or semantic meaning of the object. The paper will present the ‘engine’ of the proposed assistant, its organisation, as well as digital models of precedents that have served as a basis for the design of new architectural objects or structures. The assistant is conceived as an open, complexity supporting structure that can be further developed by the ‘user-architect’. We will discuss the advantages and limitations of the proposed assistant.

summary Recently, the mainstream gradually has become replacing neighborhood-style communities with high-density residences. The original pleasant scale and enclosed residential spaces have been broken, and the traditional neighborhood relations are going away. This research uses machine learning to train the model to generate a new plan, which is used in today’s residential design. First, in order to obtain a better generation effect, this study extracts the transcendental information of the neighborhood community in north of China, using roads, buildings etc. as morphological representations; GauGAN, compared to the pix2pix and pix2pixHD, used by predecessors, can achieve a clearer and a more diversified output and also fit irregular contours more realistically. ANN model trained by 167 general layout samples of a neighborhood community in north of China from 1950s to 1970s can generate various general layouts in different shapes and scales. The experiment proves that GauGAN is more suitable for general layout generation than pix2pix (pix2pixHD); Distributed training can improve the clarity of the generation and allow later vectorization to be more convenient.

summary This project arises from the need to produce didactic resources to support the teaching of color in the Chilean school environment. It starts from a critical screening at the Visual Arts curriculum proposed by the Ministry of Education. The way to address this lack of resources was through exploration techniques of digital fabrication and rapid prototyping, in order to generate updated and low cost learning objects. This could provide didactic materials to a wider amount of teachers and learning environments. The prototypes created will be implemented in the Centro de Arte y Tecnología, of the Fundación Mustakis, a pioneering space for independent learning and exploration around chromatic topics.

summary Architectural design process, heir to craftsmanship traditions, formulates making as its vehicle of analysis. This curious pedigree directs high-level thought process through the restraint of material limitations; a methodology based in respect for materials whose properties and tendencies are capable of driving outcome. In this tradition of making, design as an intellectual act is dependent on engaging active, spatiomaterial media. Additionally, contemporary literature suggests physical materiality as an interface is uniquely suited to human intelligence, at once corporeal and intellectual. Therefore, if digital is understood as an extension of our intellectual thought process, its evolution should intertwine with the physical. This paper reports on research examining the role of physicality as a component of digital design method. The research constructs hybrid models and physicalizations, physical makings parametrically linked to inform digital design; thereby testing the integration of physical and digital as a material-based digital making methodology. The proposed next digital turn is a return to materiality as conduit transporting the full range of human intelligence (sensorial, intuitive, and intellectual) within digital making. Key to this methodology is designing with live, spatiomaterial media capable of reacting and providing feedback during making. The supposition contained turning towards physical-digital integrated methodology is that the wicked problems we face are best served by a design methodology accessing the full arsenal of our intelligence with media that is connected to the same multiplexity of context it seeks to remedy.

summary In this paper we aimed at the development of a novel tool to facilitate the structured analysis of architectural construction principles, materials and production methods in digital design and fabrication practices. In order to assist the understanding and teaching of these subjects, we employed a taxonomy of spatial design construction (Vrouwe 2013). By using the taxonomy, we analysed and categorised 34 parametric structures published in the IJAC Journal (2002-2014). Informed by this study, we aligned the initial taxonomy using various framing strategies. As a result we developed a new framework for spatial design construction specifically customised for the design and fabrication of parametric structures which can potentially serve as a constructive tool to create a novel design learning environment and integrated teaching strategies.
