summary This paper introduces a computer-based tool for three dimensional (3D) landscape simulations of housing-layout-design using the concepts of fractals with Iterative Function System (IFS). Housing layout design is defined as a design to allocate many house-units in the undeveloped site. The tool generates a variety of layout designs consisting of multiple dwelling house-units from manual inputs or a template pattern defined as an XML file. Each unit can contain any detailed 3D components found in the residential development such as a house, roads, walls, trees etc. The template defines the transformation rules for IFS including the information of geometrical relationships between the stages in the iteration and of the components used in stop-conditions. The application tool is formulated, implemented and tested. The results in the case studies using several practical sites are demonstrated and evaluated based on the experiments in the design studio.

summary This paper introduces a VR city model developed for driving simulation. The project is a part of interdisciplinary multi-year academic research grant. First, the outline of the research is explained. The process of VR city modeling is then introduced. The modeling process of creating road and intersection networks and traffic flow is explained. The system integration with a PC, modeling and VR software, and a Drive Simulator is illustrated. A case study of driving through the city with different traffic amounts using the simulator is analyzed. Computational tools to extract driving behavior data and future endeavors are discussed.

The results are shown as the 3D rendered images made by the students in the general education course. Based on the statistical data from the course, the correlations between the score of students and several factors, such as, access number to online discussion board, gender, software-purchased, degree program, etc. are analyzed.

summary This paper introduces an innovative computational design tool used to edit architectural geometry by addressing the problem of irregular vertices. An irregular vertex is a special kind of vertex which is connected with fewer or greater less or more edges than regular vertices on a mesh object. Irregular vertices create problems with further surface rationalization, as well as structural analysis and constructability of the surface. Geometry created using other tools can also be remeshed upon import. Using the developed tool, the user is able to identify irregular vertices, interactively change the type, and then move or remove these irregular vertices. Additionally, a computational tool to make various design patterns on the mesh after the topology has been edited is also developed. The workflow is illustrated step by step in the pipeline. The advantages and disadvantages of editing mesh topology on architectural geometry design including the limitations are discussed at the end.

summary This paper presents an image-driven method to rapidly generate 3D digital urban models for presentation in a real-time Virtual Reality (VR) environment. Several computational tools and methods are developed in order to give the end user the ability to transform a single 2D image into a realistically textured and rendered a 3D urban model. Using this method, city models based on SmartCode, a template for planning and urban design, are generated and presented in a VR visualization tool. The methods to generate VR city models including inputs, process, output, and pipeline are explained. One generated 3D city model is demonstrated in the results section.

summary The research endeavors to investigate the approaches and applications made in areas of online communities and forums in order to benefit from. The research proceeds to present an innovative contribution that could be described as a visual design library, a visual design community, and a novel use of networking in designing. The fields investigated by the research are: Online Communities and Forums, Networking and Collaborative Design, and Online Design Environment. The research contribution includes introducing a computer program called DesignMap that masters and presents a massive number of visual designs in two and three dimensions. The introduced software through its functions not only serves main applications of design disciplines of architecture and urban planning, but also combines significances of the investigated fields. Three comprehensive goals are investigated and introduced through this research: First, the proposed program is a means of getting architects and urban planners, who typically work in the domain of computationally introducing the design environment, involved in the creation and exploration of their designated forms for enhancing objects and spaces. Second, the program provides a design map for any architect and urban planner to search, visualize, modify, and then add designs through a wide range of form categories based on formal properties of objects relationship. Each user can have access to any part or category in this design map. Third, the research introduces the DesignMap as a tool to form and build up a networking community by bringing architects and urban planners with an interest in design area together to share in designing and to create design series.

summary This research attempts to formulate a computational framework for exploring spatial arrangements in the early phases of design. In the physical world, this could be compared to exploring spatial arrangements using cardboard cut-outs or simply a grid of spaces on paper. This research demonstrates the framework by means of a generative design system that introduces axial order in a plan parti made up of discrete 3D objects. The tool is designed to organize the 3D objects along an Axis specified by the user and also rearrange them following user-defined mathematical expressions. The numerical parameters (the dimensions and physical properties of the individual objects) are linked through the mathematical expressions to vary the spatial arrangement of objects. Implementation of the tool involves the Self Organizing Maps (SOMs) as the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in generative systems. This allows the user to select and dynamically view spatial arrangements that have been organized on a map based on their similarity. The application is implemented, tested, and its results are demonstrated using buildings designed by Louis I. Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.

summary A panel-hinge framework is a structure composed of rigid panels connected by hinges. It was recently proved that for a so-called generic position, the rigidity of panel-hinge frameworks can be tested by examining the combinatorial property of the underlying graph. In this study, we apply such combinatorial characteristics to create design forms. However, such characterization is only valid for so-called "generic" panel-hinge frameworks. When considering the application of design forms, we need to take into account non-generic cases. In this paper, we develop the method to inductively generate non-generic rigid panel-hinge frameworks consisting of orthogonal panels and to inductively generate rigid panel-hinge frameworks based on fractal geometry coupled with space filling 3-dimensional convex polyhedron as a construction unit. We give examples of forms by the proposed method to demonstrate the applicability to design forms.

summary This paper presents an algorithmic framework proposal for implementation of a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) in architectural design process. Different than the previous studies, we introduce a dynamic and extendible modular framework for multiple objectives. The objective modules with different fitness functions are connected simultaneously in the Rhino/Octopus interface, after multiplication with a constant value or a variable. In this study, we discuss the potentials and limitations of MOGA in 3D form generation, implications of MOGA in a case study and the qualitative and quantitative changes in relation to the change of constant value/ the impact ratio of competing objectives. The outcomes of the case study are investigated based on its potentiality in providing feedback in the earlier phases of decision processes in design.

summary This paper aims to present a dynamic multi objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) framework for the purpose of generating 3D mass models in the context of housing design. The proposed MOGA framework contains static and dynamic modules such as regulations, environmental condition analysis as static, behavioral models, designer-specified goals, domain-specific goals based on building types as dynamic modules. Moreover comparison of two algorithmic approaches, implementation of a single and multiple objective genetic algorithms are compared in terms of variety and usability of the generated design solutions, fitness approximation performances and the speed of the algorithms (running time). In the scope of this study, the potentials andlimitations of the proposed MOGA framework in 3D form generation, its advantages over single objective genetic algorithm are discussed, conducted with a case study.

summary The intention of this paper is to examine the mutual influences of initial architectural, structural and digital manufacturing related decisions on the evolution of free-form structures. A survey on current applications will be presented to lay the foundation for the examination of new production techniques and structural concerns for the computer generated expressive forms. Finally, the paper will describe an interactive web-based database project which aims to establish a grammar on the mutual influences of architectural, structural and production related features of free-forms. Based on the built examples of blob structures, the database serves as a catalogue of possibilities related to form, and facilitate assessment of the impact of the early choices on the free-form building design and development.

summary Learning in architecture has shifted from an individual focused approach to a larger system of interacting individuals in a situated, tool-mediated and socio-technical context. In addition to developing essential skills to work with diverse design software and taking part in collaborative design activities, learners also need to be equipped with competencies that will allow them to operate intelligently outside of situations of distributed cognitions. The challenge in present educational climate is to develop pedagogical approaches where situations of distributed cognition are not the ends themselves but are the means for improving mastery of solo competencies. The paper contributes to the current discussion about the need to re-orient architectural education and proposes a pedagogical framework for the development of a new web-based teaching/learning environment (socio-cognitive eco-system) as an integrated platform to support both autonomous and distributed learning.

summary The recent advances in digital design media and digital fabrication processes have introduced formal and procedural effects on the conception and production of architecture. In order to bridge the individual concepts and processes of multiple design disciplines, intensive cross-disciplinary communication and information exchange starting from the very early stages of design is necessary. A web-based database for design learning and design teaching named BLIP is introduced. In this framework, cross-disciplinary domain knowledge becomes explicit to be taught and transferred in Free-Form Design research and education. BLIP proposes a conceptual map through which the user can construct structured representations of concepts and their relationships. These concepts are high-level abstractions of formal, structural and production related concepts in Free-Form design development. BLIP is used for formalizing, organizing and representing conceptual maps of the three domains and facilitates information and knowledge sharing in collaborative conceptual design in context. The paper introduces the application together with its application in two educational design experiments.

summary This paper focuses on the emerging domain of digital free-form design, and attempts to explicate its knowledge content and characteristics through a systematic inquiry of the digital free-form design practice. The massive amount of information associated with the design and construction demands of the complexly shaped buildings demand explicit knowledge about the way various information pieces relate to one another. This paper reports on the process of developing a knowledge framework which serves as a reference model to describe and explain the free-form design and production processes in terms of the interaction of contextual conditions and according to the different ways design problems are perceived and formulated by the members of the design teams. The framework provides guidelines for the development of a web-based design decision support system to support collaborative knowledge construction, sharing and reuse in the domain.
