summary This study covers daylighting performance analysis of inner spaces in two different urban occupation configurations through computational simulation. The scenarios are based on an urban patch of Florianópolis city, with an area of 38,900 square meters. The scenarios were built by CityZoom computer code. The daylighting simulation analyses were performed by Apolux code. The daylighting availability in urban scenario was analyzed through the Preferable Sky Window parameter and obstruction mask. According to this work methodology, guidelines can be developed restricting building height and spacing in order to provide minimum standards of daylight availability.

summary This article describes an initiative to identify which cognitive abilities influence performance in 3D modeling for architecture activities. This work tests the visual, spatial and logical reasoning skills of students of architecture. After these tests, the results will compared with the results of 3D modeling test. By identifying, some cognitive abilities that has a direct relation to performance in 3D modeling will be possible to create learning objects that improve these characteristics.

title Location of a Point in a Planar Subdivision and its Applications

summary Given a subdivision of the plane induced by a planar graph with n vertices, in this paper the problem of identifying which region of the subdivision contains a given test points is considered. A search algorithm, called point-location algorithm, which operates on a suitably preprocessed data structure is presented. The search runs in time at most O((log n)2), while the preprocessing task runs in time at most O(n log n) and requires O(n) storage. The methods are quite general, since an arbitrary subdivision can be transformed in time at most O(n log n) into one to which the preprocessing procedure is applicable. This solution of the point location problem yields interesting and efficient solutions of other geometric problems, such as spatial convex inclusion and inclusion in an arbitrary polygon

summary This paper presents a surface manipulation tool that can transform any arrangement of folding planar surfaces without the need to custom program for each instance. Origami offers a finite set of paper-folding techniques that can be cataloged and tested with parametric modeling software. For this work, Rhinoceros and Grasshopper have been chosen as a software platform to generate a parametric folding tool focusing on single surface folding, particularly where surfaces can transform from one configuration to another while retaining their planarity.

summary The existing historic city attracts the attention of architects and educators for its architectural value and history. In addition, many researches on visualisation of historic sites such as world heritage sites are in progress in order to represent the importance of preservation and restoration. New Lanark is the best-preserved example of a cotton-spinning village from the early period of Britain’s industrialisation, and is of international significance in terms of economic, architectural and social history. The village has also been nominated for inclusion in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. This paper aims to describe development procedure of virtual historic village of New Lanark for educating people about its significant social history and a unique type of building. A multimedia environment is useful for this purpose considering dynamic links among different kinds of resources such as text, images, 3D models and animations. Through this environment people can access from where they are to virtual heritage and navigate 3D space by animation with virtual guidance.

title iSphere:A free-hand 3D modeling interface

summary Making 3D models should be an easy and intuitive task like free-hand sketching. This paper presents iSphere, a 24 degree of freedom 3D input device. iSphere is a dodecahedron embedded with 12 capacitive sensors for pulling-out and pressing-in manipulation on 12 control points of 3D geometries. It exhibits a conceptual 3D modeling approach for saving mental loads of low-level commands. Using analog inputs of 3D manipulation, designers are able to have high-level modeling concepts like pushing or pulling 3D surfaces. Our experiment shows that iSphere saved steps in the selection of control points in the review of menus and leading to a clearer focus on what to build instead of how to build it. Novices saved significant time learning 3D manipulation by using iSphere to making conceptual models. However, one tradeoff of the iSphere is its lack of fidelity in its analog input mechanism.

summary The unique integration of geometries and techniques allows the natural organisms to adapt to different environments in creative ways. In this study, a bio-inspired pneumatic facade is presented as a strategy to improve the efficiency of natural ventilation performance by controlling the adaptive openings. The Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation has been conducted to visualize airflows in order to explore how the changing configurations of openings enhance natural ventilation efficiency. The airflows are investigated with changes in wind speed and direction to find out the opening configurations which provide indoor airflows at the comfort level of velocities. As results, it was shown that indoor air velocities were modulated by controlling opening sizes, geometries and positions of the openings, and it was a beneficial strategy to apply the optimized opening configurations implementing automatic control. Also, the air distribution can be enhanced by changing opening configurations in changing conditions of wind speed and direction. An effective methodology for an intelligent façade opening control to encourage natural ventilation is presented in this study to deliver users comfort and efficiency.

summary Although national and international attention toward the cultural heritage is on a rise, there is a lack of public attention toward cultural heritage sites. One of the main problems is the lack of interaction and the visualization of cultural heritage on the sites. Especially Korean historical architectures are structurally complex and are not easily understood by common people. To improve the public awareness of architectural heritages, we propose a model-based diagnosis system to educate the visitors and tourists. The system is designed to guide the users to model an appropriate architecture in accordance with the era, location, and the usage. For the system, we built a robust set of cases based on the ontological structure we designed especially for architectural heritage education. It basically enables users to reconstruct buildings intuitively in six steps from bottom to top. A system evaluation was conducted on the affective, cognitive, operative aspect of the system at a heritage site. The results show well in terms of cognitive aspect but was evaluated poorly in terms of the operative aspect.

summary As a new paradigm for construction in the ubiquitous era, IT Technology like RFID is an emerging issue in the building industry. For the purpose of RFID technology application in the building industry, this research suggests the Information Lifecycle Management using RFID technology in apartment building project and deals with the context-aware scenario for RFID technology application. The final objective of the research intends to develop the RFID application for the construction industry. From the tagging nodes at the material manufacture stage to the reading nodes at the end stage of the construction process, the flow of the RFID information deals with the synthetic application connecting physical construction material with electronic RFID information for the management. Furthermore, we suggest how to systematize, distribute and manage the construction material with the Information Lifecycle Management.

title A fuzzy navigation system for mobile construction robots

summary Fuzzy navigation systems control a robot by implementing a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). Fuzzy navigation systems are simpler to implement than other navigation systems because they can handle infinite navigation situations with a finite set of rules. Existing fuzzy navigation systems for path finding in an unknown environment tend to find the shortest path in convex obstacle fields, but fail when obstacles are concave or placed continuously in certain configurations. This paper presents a fuzzy navigation system that can escape from concave and maze-like obstacle fields in an unknown environment. The system combines a tangent algorithm for path planning with sets of linguistic fuzzy control rules. In particular, we introduce the control rules for a Tracking mode of the FLC and improvements to the commonly used, intuitively reasonable tangent algorithm.

summary This research suggest the viewshed frequency concept to improve the limit of viewshed analysis and realized it through the programming. Viewshed frequency analysis presents arithmetic operation for several results of multilayered observation points, and designed for not only one building but also large scale of research sites. The results of research were as followed : (1) Viewshed frequency analysis makes possible multi viewpoints stereoscopic analysis and showed more improved results. (2) Viewshed frequency analysis has no limits of the scale of research sites by multi-layered grid observation points method. (3) Viewshed frequency analysis has more elaborate result with DEM which has building height and NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index).

summary The purpose of this paper is to present the characteristics of laser scanning technology, based on two examples for the modeling at the reconstruction of the Golgotha site in Jerusalem and the ancient Stoa of Eumenes II, located at the South Slope of the Athens Acropolis. Terrestrial 3D laser scanning is a new methodology for three dimensional object modeling. Especially, the reconstruction of the ancient Stoa of Eumenes II comprises one of the most important restoration programs of the Greek Ministry of Culture. This paper will focus on the main steps of the laser scanning processing chain, starting from the acquisition of the data and ending with the evaluation of the 3D models.

summary This article presents a didactic experience carried out with the use of a BIM tool in the Thermal Environmental Comfort discipline of the graduate course in Architecture and Urbanism of a private Higher Education Institution in the city of Salvador-Bahia. Starting in 2020, students began designing solar protection devices using a geometric model in Revit. The method described in Annex I of the Technical Regulation on the Quality of Energy Efficiency Level in Residential Buildings (RTQ-R) was applied. The results obtained showed a better understanding by the students about the importance of correctly sizing solar protection devices for different orientations.

summary This essay is related to the research project "The immersive experience in 360°: investigation, representation and digital immersion in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th and 20th centuries", developed at PROURB in FAU-UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. This work will investigate the Panorama of Rio de Janeiro looking for memories and historical truths in its context: Which part represents a historical point of view? Which part is invention? How were the city and its landscape represented on the canvas? As the most well-known Rio de Janeiro's panorama, which project was idealized by the Brazilian painter Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832-1903) and the Belgian photo-painter Henri Charles Langerock (1830-1915), it was exhibited in Brussels 1888, Paris 1889, and Rio de Janeiro 1891-1896, with great recognition in all these cities. This paper will explore this Panorama, its initial studies, its landscape and the architecture depicted, newspapers descriptions of its exhibitions, and mainly, distinguishing among memories, historical truths and verisimilitudes. In order to achieve these objectives, digital and analogical systems of representations, sketches and computer graphics techniques, specially, tridimensional models will be developed and applied.

summary This work is part of an ongoing research entitled “The 360- immersive: investigation, representation and digital immersion of Rio de Janeiro city during 19th and 20th centuries”, which aims at the theoretical, conceptual and instrumental analysis and discussion of the Panorama of Rio de Janeiro by Victor Meirelles and Henri Langerock in the Unity Game Engine. It presents an historical-interpretive method with application in Digital Graphics. To this end, it was considered necessary: to recreate the 360- immersive experience of the Panorama in real time; its context experience during the historical layers of 1885, 1915, 2020, and a fourth combination between previous layers, based in specific geometric models; programming in C# the movement of the player-observer, scenes, interaction with objects and the player's own navigation through the game menu.

title Visualisation of Uncertainty in Archaeological Reconstructions

summary Archaeological research begins with historical remains and ends with hypotheses that base on analogies and probabilities. Well conserved remains allow a more fundamental reconstruction even in three dimensions whereas sometimes there are only vague contours. Therefore the visualisation of e.g. an ancient city only partly relies on research, other parts can be entirely hypothetic. Static models are incapable of representing both at the same time: the hypothesis and the uncertainty implied. In most cases the uncertainty varies within a hypothesis, parts of a city or building are more likely than others, some hypotheses even contradict each other. Grades of uncertainty require an adequate visual reprentation in order to visually explain hypothesis and uncertainty. In the field of archaeology an adequate method has not been established yet. In this work we explore the application of methods of architectural visualisation in order to express scientific uncertainty gradually between reconstruction and hypothesis. During the last two years we worked on several archaeological sites with emphasis on the ancient Pergamon.

summary Fictions for virtual reality are mostly conceived either in an entirely virtual environment or in a real environment with very little transformation. It is infinitely rare to find examples of sets designed and built specifically for a 360° experience. Building, rather than remaining purely virtual, raises complex questions about the organization of a "space to play" and therefore how to produce a narrative for immersion and create a 360° film grammar.We thus have created a first 360° set for the famous director Marc Caro, for whom the question of off-screen raised a very complex technical problem regarding lighting, visual effects, staging, blocking and acting. In this contribution we will show how this was solved and why the definition of a 360° narrative grammar is crucial. These are important intricacies that place the user-spectator in the optimal conditions to appreciate the experience.
