summary This work shows the study of the methods and techniques for the development of a virtual vision VRML 3D included in an "Digitally-integrated knowledge base" with interactive interphases of a significantly revitalized fragment of a central area of the city of Rosario, Province of Santa Fé, Argentina, that includes an emblematic heritage for the Argentineans: the National Monument to the Flag. Digital models that partly allow the development of a hypothesis of integration between the digitized information and information technology—new digital proximity— to the effects of being able to investigate the generation of multimedia database that includes three-dimensional and dynamic models of the mentioned type, in this case, urban, architectonic, and cultural heritage. Different views and research on heritage have been developing. Nevertheless, the use of these new 3D non-immersive technologies and inter-phases are opening a new field of vision and understanding of the subject.

summary Hydroassemblies is a research thesis that investigates the architectural potential of a unit-based modular system that can recursively grow in space guided by hydrodynamic principles in order to generate intricate tectonic assemblies, integrating the roles of spatial articulator, water collector/distributor and plant cultivation substrate to foster a symbiotic relation with the urban environment. By implementing principles of circulatory systems in biology, the authors developed a system that grows through recursive formation of loops and articulates its tectonic via a continuous, interconnected branching network. The founding process improves upon a combinatorial algorithm of discrete parts, considering how iterative interactions at the local level have a feedback impact on the growth process at the whole system scale. The paper explores how features, spatial and perceptive qualities, affordances and opportunities emerge at the global scale of the formation from the interplay of local behavioral principles and environmental conditions. The provided implementation is a proof of concept of the production of complex qualities by means of massive quantities of simple elements and interactions.

title GIS and the Investigation of the Environmental Heritage

summary This paper presents an investigation on the architectural, natural, and cultural resources in the southern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to their historical or environmental value, identifying natural and cultural elements known and valued by local communities, regardless their experts’ classification. Resources are identified by means of geographical information systems, combined with field information. The area comprises the coastal strip and the plains located in the last frontier of the Brazilian territory and the water system dominated by the lakes Patos, Mangueira and Mirim. The inventory of the environmental, sociocultural and economic heritage provides the necessary insight for issuing new development alternatives based on local resources. Research activities will include: the ellaboration of general and thematic maps, based on LANDSAT 5 [bands 3, 4 and 5] images; aerial photographs; DSG/SGE and municipal maps [scales 1:250.000, 1:50.000 and 1:25.000]; field work for the recognition of remarkable elements; interviews with residents for assessing their perception of local values; and community and institutional statements. These informations, comprising the elements valued by their architectural and urban quality, historical relevance and environmental significance, organised in a database, will provide contextual guidelines for the planning of a tourist route. This route, delineated by the preservation, recovery and use of representative local resources, valued as expressions of a native culture, evocates the initial occupation of the gaúcho territory, and may be touristically promoted as "The Gaúcho’s Way". The project also aims at showing the potential offered by GIS for identifying and evaluating specific spatial characteristics.

summary Art historians and critics have defined the style as common features appeared in a class of objects. Abstract common features from a set of objects have been used as a bench mark for date and location of original works. Common features in shapes are identified by relationships as well as physical properties from shape descriptions. This paper will focus on how the computer recognises common shape properties from a class of shape objects to learn style. Shape representation using schema theory has been explored and possible inductive generalisation from shape descriptions has been investigated.

summary This work reports on the development of assistive resources aimed at representing and interpreting the architectural language of a cultural heritage that houses a museum. The resources are designed to enhance the inclusion of visually impaired individuals through a codesign approach, involving this group in the development process. The tactile models produced represent the three-dimensionality of each room within the house, highlighting its proportions, and serve as fitting elements in a tactile map, which corresponds to the first floor of the building. These materials were designed to interact on a tangible table located in the Museum. The three-dimensional models include a fiducial on their base, which, when inserted into the tactile map, placed on the tangible table, triggers an audio description. The integration of these resources facilitates communication through a multi-format and multisensory approach, contributing to the inclusion of diverse audiences and promoting the greater access to culture and knowledge.

title Biofeedback and Virtual Environments

summary This paper explains potential benefits of indirect biofeedback used within interactive virtual environments, and reflects on an earlier study that allowed for the dynamic modification of a virtual environment’s graphic shaders, music and artificial intelligence, based on the biofeedback of the player. The aim was to determine which augmented effects aided or discouraged engagement in the game. Conversely, biofeedback can help calm down rather than stress participants, and attune them to different ways of interacting within a virtual environment. Other advantages of indirect biofeedback might include increased personalization, thematic object creation, atmospheric augmentation, filtering of information, and tracking of participants’ understanding and engagement. Such features may help designers create more intuitive virtual environments with more thematically appropriate interaction while reducing cognitive loading on the participants. Another benefit would be more engaged clients with a better understanding of the richness and complexity of a digital environment.

title Spatial Cognition in Digital Cities

summary Today, digital cities are being developed all over the world. By using a city metaphor, digital cities integrate urban information and create public spaces. However, there are questions as to how to enter the new emerging digital cities, how humans perceive themselves in digital cities, and there are also issues of recognition of the digital city forms? This paper takes the idea of cognition in order to explore the structure of the new spatiality as cyberspace. By exploring the factors relating to human spatial cognition in physical space it is possible to interpret how humans perceive the spatial form of digital cities. By examining spatial experience in physical space, the interface of spatial cognition of interaction between digital cities and physical cities can be investigated. And by taking this approach, we propose an online prototype of a metaphor for a digital city.

title Urban scale digital twins in data-driven society: Challenging digital universalism in urban planning decision-making

summary The article examines the impact of the virtual public sphere on how urban spaces are experienced andconceived in our data-driven society. It places particular emphasis on urban scale digital twins, which arevirtual replicas of cities that are used to simulate environments and develop scenarios in response to policyproblems. The article also investigates the shift from the technical to the socio-technical perspective withinthe field of smart cities. Despite the aspirations of urban scale digital twins to enhance the participation ofcitizens in the decision-making processes relayed to urban planning strategies, the fact that they are based on alimited set of variables and processes makes them problematic. The article aims to shed light on the tensionbetween the real and the ideal at stake during this process of abstracting sets of variables and processes in thecase of urban scale digital twins

summary This paper presents a digital fabrication process for concrete which may be deployed for surface texturing, volumetric modification of material properties and 2D and 3D forming. We process concrete in its slurry state by locally injecting chemicals in solution which cause vigorous effervescent reaction to take place. By precise and controlled dispensing, using computer software and robotic hardware developed, we produce local differentiation in the finally set concrete artefacts. Our work contributes to additive and subtractive 3D manufacturing as well as functionally graded materials fabrication.

summary This paper first presents a review on visual perception in the built environment and human vision simulation. Followed by the description of the Standard Feature Model of visual cortex (SFM), an architectural cue recognition model is proposed using SFM-based features. Based on the findings of the experiments it can be concluded that the visual differences between architectural cues are too subtle to realistically simulate human vision for the SFM model.

summary This paper proposes a method of mesh simplification for 3D terrain or city models generated photogrammetrically from drone captured images, enabled by the ability of extracting the architectural features. Compare to traditional geometric computational method, the proposed method recognizes and processes the features from the architectural perspectives. In addition, the workflow also allows exporting the simplified models and geometric features to open platforms, e.g. OpenStreetMap, for practical usages in site analysis, city generation, and contributing to the open data communities.

title Civic Media Platforms and Participatory Urbanism: A Critical Reflection

summary In this paper, we explicate our research on technology-mediated urban experience specific to two hyper-local tests in which the space of the ‘public’ is transformed into a virtual network by connective broadcasting. The first case study presents collective mapping in Rio de Janeiro toward increased civic engagement and sustainability, the second tests documentation of political demonstrations for strategic and archival purposes for Occupy Boston. Grouped under the term “participatory urbanism,” the projects intend to explore how an individual activates interstitial space (between the physical city and hovering networks, between public and private) by engaging technology and civic media to affect change in the built environment. The physical and virtual environments serve as reciprocal sources of information, engendering a collective practice of shared encounters. We investigate how such encounters of user-centered activity through mobile and web-based media support or implicate the perception and manipulation of the built environment over spans of time and locations, and will highlight qualitative elements of a mobile and web platform designed for successful civic engagement and participatory urbanism.

title Parametric Documenting of Built Heritage: 3D Virtual Reconstruction of Architectural Details

summary This paper examines 3D modelling of architectural elements with the help of parametric components. Such components may be useful within the framework of projects dealing with virtual 3D reconstruction of heritage monuments. Architectural components of the built heritage often have complex geometry. We studied the various geometrical shapes of a given architectural element, representative of a specific period and place. This study allowed us to identify the parameters and to implement parametric objects (in Maya Environment [1]). We also developed a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to answer the user's needs while generating the 3D model representing the architectural element. Within this GUI, the user is able to make adjustments with the help of laser point clouds from laserscanning, 2D plans or photographs. We exemplify our method with a case study dealing with openings and lintels. The corpus under study consists of elements of the built heritage of Montreal (Canada) and Nancy (France).

summary This paper deals with 3D modeling of complex architectural elements for virtual 3D scene reconstruction based on images or point clouds. It presents a new method at the opposite of classical photogrammetry and lasergrammetry techniques: parametric components are created and then adapted to the measured data. We have conceived and developed a parametric shape generator tool for virtual 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage monuments. We present the geometrical study on the cupola shapes with all their diversity. It is illustrated with the Suleymaniyé Mosque in Turkey. The results are promising. The modeling time is greatly reduced.

summary The search by new architectural forms with digital media loses interest when its results become foreseeable and repetitive in the growth of the large cities. At present, the interest is greater by the processing and manipulation of digital databases as alternatives of the architectural project. The resultant architectures possess forms that contrast less but with greater diversity in their spatial relations. DATABASE 3D is presented like a formal proposal risked of investigation. The experiences of project explore the concepts of Collective Autor, digital database and Hipertexto.
