summary This paper reports on the early stages of development of a case-based design tool. The purpose of this tool, called the Workplace Environment Design Advisor (WEDA), is to support architects in the conceptual design of workplace environments. The objective of this system is to provide electronic storage, retrieval and the exploration of post-occupancy performance knowledge of workplace environments. The paper provides a description of the reasoning behind choosing a case-based approach and thesteps used to develop a prototype case-based system. This includes recent efforts to collect and structure real case data. This experience led to observations about issues such as case content (the availability and format of post-occupancy data) and retrieval strategies. The data collected for use in the system is based on a building-in-use study of the Centre ofBuilding Research’s office rooms located at the University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

summary The main aim of this study is to present design theories since 1900s and their evaluation for 2000s. For this reason the basic manifesto; “Modernism” which gives its signs and principles to the identityof 20th century is held as beginning point. The modern movement in architecture in order to fully express 20th century, possessed the “faith in science and technology”, “rationalism and romantic faithin speed” or “the roar of machines”. And also it was treated as a series of discrete art movements like Futurism, Cubism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism. But one of them; “Cubism” is pointed out tobe the first movement of “Purism” that built “Modernism”. To emphasise the general idea of design theories in 1900s, Cubism is chosen as a point of view and the aim is required to put forward some ideas by criticising cubist design theory and putting some principles about the effects of cubist design theory on modernism and post modernism (trends and periods after modernism). The method of “Conceptualisation”, one of the most important system to begin a design is used while making analysis. In this content, the paper involves five main parts. In the first and second parts, theintroduction to Cubism and First Machine Age are explained. The third part consists of Cubism as an art of painting. In the fourth part cubist design theory and the cubist conceptions are posed. The last part of the survey gives the findings and conclusions aiming to put forward estimations for further designs in the future.

summary District-scale energy demand models can be powerful tools for understanding interactions in complex urban areas and optimising energy systems in new developments. The process of coupling characteristics of urban environments with simulation software to achieve accurate results is nascent. We developed a digital twin through a web map application for a 170ha district-scale university campus as a pilot. The impact on the built environment is simulated with pandemic (COVID-19) and climate change scenarios. The former can be observed through varying occupancy rates and average cooling loads in the buildings during the lockdown period. The digital twin dashboard was built with visualisations of the 3D campus, real-time data from sensors, energy demand simulation results from the City Energy Analyst (CEA) tool, and occupancy rates from WiFi data. The ongoing work focuses on formulating a resilience assessment metric to measure the robustness of buildings to these disruptions. This district-scale digital twin demonstration can help in facilities management and planning applications. The results show that the digital twin approach can support decarbonising initiatives for cities.

summary Design is a cooperative activity at several levels. At one level, clients, architects, financiers, and construction engineers and contractors, all play important roles in creating the design for the building. At another level, the design team may contain architects, interior and landscape designers, lighting experts, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning experts, etc. At a third level, individual architects cooperate with computer-based design tools in creating portions of a complex design. This paper describes an ongoing project called ArchiDATA, in which we are developing a computational Case-Based Design Aid (CBDA) for architectural design. This project, which is collaboration between cognitive scientists and architectural researchers, builds on an artificial intelligence paradigm called case-based reasoning and work in post-occupancy evaluation and other case study research in architecture.

summary This research proposes to support the reading of physical ambiences by the development of a representational technique which compiles, in a numerical interface, two types of data: sensory and filmic. These data are recorded through the use of a portable array equipped with sensors (Potvin 1997, 2002, 2004) as well as the acquisition of Video information of the moving environment. The compilation of information is carried out through a multi-media approach, by means of a program converting the environmental data into dynamic diagrams, as well as the creation of an interactive interface allowing a possible diffusion on the Web. This technique, named APMAP/Video, makes it possible to read out simultaneously spatial and environmental diversity. It is demonstrated through surveys taken at various seasons and time of the day at the new Caisse de dépôt et de placement headquarters in Montreal which is also the corpus for a SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) research grant on Environmental Adaptability in Architecture (Potvin et al. 2003-2007). This case study shows that the technique can prove of great relevance for POEs (Post Occupancy Evaluation) as well as for assistance in a new design project.

summary Academic Libraries (ALs) design concept has been under a changing process, precipitated by both internal needs and external pressures including changes in the societal context of education, the information services and documentation storage requirements. This paper is focused on a model of form and function to assess AL’ in use, in order to explore ways for better understanding their performance. The proposed model was developed within the scope of a wider research project and makes both use of Post-Occupancy Evaluation and of Space Syntax procedures in order to explore how the spatial configuration influences the performance and use of ALs space. It considers ALs building typology as spatial, physical and social systems, by: 1) measuring users satisfaction about how well the space supports their requirements; and 2) providing information on how architecture and spatial design support - enable and generate - flows of information, communication and knowledge.The analysis provides evidence suggesting that ALs’ spatial system influences study performance, patterns of use and co-presence of its users. The results of data inputs point out prospective strategies about space intervention.

summary This project intends to develop a method for using virtual reality (VR) to represent a built environment for simulating environmental influences on occupants. Objectives of the project were to explore: (1) what environmental stimuli would affect habitants’ perception, and (2) what possible factors in the built environment would affect occupants’ cognition. An office was selected as the subject of study. Methods were to create a number of digital models, each containing an embedded variable, and then test the impact of environmental influences on visual perception. Results obtained in this study indicate that materials have stronger impact to human perception than colors, and VR has great potential for design decision making and post-occupancy evaluation.

summary Although computers have significantly impacted the way we design buildings, they have yet to meaningfully impact the way we evaluate buildings. In this paper we detail two case studies where computation and machine learning were used to analyze data produced by building inhabitants. We find that a building’s ‘data exhaust’ provides a rich source of information for longitudinally analyzing people’s architectural preferences. We argue that computation-driven evaluation could supplement traditional post occupancy evaluations.

summary Recent developments in indoor positioning technology means gathering personal interaction data is possible however, the process of analysing this data to determine where and when interactions occur indoors is not yet standardised.This paper proposes a method to gather and examine indoor positioning data to infer face-to-face interactions indoors. The case study looks specifically at indoor office environment however the principles shown can be applied to other indoor spaces. This paper explores a high-level technological methodology that gathers indoor positioning data from users. A formula is used to calculate if, when and where interactions occur over a floor-plan, as well as visualising these interactions to highlight high and low interaction areas. The system considers the proximity between the individuals, the angle between their forward physical orientation, and any obstructions that might divide individuals from each other. The information presented in this paper can be used as a theoretical baseline to inform future post-occupancy evaluation methods. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the merit of using indoor positioning systems to test the effectiveness of design principles in encouraging face-to-face interactions of the users.

summary The post-occupancy evaluation (POE) process, traditionally reliant on subjective user feedback and observations, has evolved in response to global concerns like climate change and sustainability. This shift towards greater objectivity and quantification reflects an increased focus on precise measurement of environmental and performance metrics. Consequently, architectural assessment is now more quantitatively oriented, moving away from a predominantly experiential emphasis. This research investigates the integration of the emerging AI tool Mid-journey into the POE process, specifically targeting the evaluation of experiential aspects in architectural design. It proposes that AI tools can be instrumental for architects and evaluators by translating user feedback into visual representations and conceptual insights. The study aims to initiate a discourse on the role of text-to-image models in assessing user experiences, potentially becoming integral to the design and concept generation process. The research combines quantitative methods like surveys and AI-driven experiments with qualitative approaches such as observations and interviews to offer enhancement proposals for Egyptian museums, comparing traditional POE solutions and frameworks with new proposed framework that incorporates AI-generated alternatives. This study emphasizes the dual role of museums as artifact custodians and platforms for public education about ancient cultures. It highlights the imperative to transform Egyptian national museums into immersive learning environments, rather than mere storage spaces. The aspiration is to create museums that securely display and preserve artifacts while fostering educational engagement in preserving our shared history.

summary Traditional post-occupancy evaluation (POE) of building performance has typically privileged physical building attributes over human behavioural data. This is due to a lack of capability and is especially the case for private spaces such as Sanitary Facilities (SFs). A privacy-preserving sensor-based system using Machine Learning (ML) was previously developed, however it was limited to basic body position classification. Yet, SF usage behaviour can be significantly more complex. This research accordingly builds on the aforementioned work to expand behavioural classifications using a sensor-based ML system. Specifically, the case study uses a GridEYE thermal sensor array, which is trained on a cubicle location within a workplace SF. A variety of ML algorithms are then evaluated on their behaviour-classifying ability. A detailed analysis of behaviour-classification performance is then provided. A system with greater fidelity is thus demonstrated, albeit hampered by imprecise behaviour definitions. Regardless, this contributes to the capability of the broader field of research that is investigating Evidence Based Design (EBD) by extending the ability to examine human behaviour, especially in private spaces. This further contributes to the growing body of work surrounding SF provision.

summary A post-occupancy evaluation is a formal way of finding out whether a recently occupied, remodelled, or built environment is performing, as was intended in its programming or design, and a term which has been developed in the professional field in the United States over the last 20 years. The Scandinavian approach to the same question has emphasised surfacing the values of the users of the work environment as a tool for a more comprehensive approach to space planning and design. A recent case-study of the Taubman Building at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government was aimed at blending the two strategies for evaluation, defined postoccupancy evaluation as a dialogue with the client, as a process to help the client reflect on spatial and technological improvements, or alternate strategies for organisational locations in buildings, and offers an interesting example of a possible future direction for POE's. Sheila Sheridan, Director of Facilities and Services at the Kennedy School, commissioned the case-study, and has been using it result in her daily work. Jacqueline Vischer, who has developed a survey of seven key dimensions of work-place comfort for commercial office buildings throughout eastern North America, and Turid Horgen, who has developed tools for participatory environmental evaluation and programming, widely used in Scandinavia, carried out the study and facilitated the evaluation process. The study is also done in the context of the ongoing research on these issues in the design Inquiry Group at the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT, which is involved in a larger program for developing strategies and tools for more effective programming and management of corporate space. This research defines the workplace environment as the interaction between four dimensions: space, technology, organisation and finance. Our approach is to integrate programming and evaluation with organisational planning and organisational transformation.Post occupancy evaluation is seen as a way to inform the client about his organisational culture as he manages the fit between a facility and its uses, and as one of several tools to bridge the frameworks and viewpoints and the many "languages" which are brought into the decision making process of designing the built environment.

summary Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as an integrated field between architecture and sociology has created practical guidelines for evaluating indoor human behavior within a built environment. This research builds on recent attempts to integrate datafication and machine learning into POE practices that may one day assist Building Information Modeling (BIM) and multi-agent modeling. This research is based on two premises: 1) that the proliferation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology allows us to collect a building user’s data cost-effectively and 2) that the growing application of machine learning algorithms allows us to process, analyze and synthesize data efficiently. This study illustrates that the mobile platform HalO can serve as a generic tool for datafication and automation of data analysis of the movement of a building user. In this research, the iOS mobile application HalO, combined with BLE beacons enable building providers (architects, developers, engineers and facility managers etc.) to collect the user’s indoor location data. Triangulation was used to pinpoint the user’s indoor positions, and k-means clustering was applied to classify users into different gathering groups. Through four research procedures—Design Intention Analysis, Data Collection, Data Storage and Data Analysis—the visualized and classified data helps building providers to better evaluate building performance, optimize building operations and improve the accuracy of simulations.

summary Architectural simulation techniques - CAD, video montage, endoscopy, full-scale or smaller models, stereoscopy, holography etc. - are common visualizations in planning. A subjective theory of planners says "experts are able to distinguish between 'pure design' in their heads and visualized design details and contexts like color, texture, material, brightness, eye level or perspective." If this is right, simulation details should be compensated mentally by trained people, but act as distractors to the lay mind.

Environmental psychologists specializing in architectural psychology offer "user needs' assessments" and "post occupancy evaluations" to facilitate communication between users and experts. To compare the efficiency of building descriptions, building walkthroughs, regular plans, simulation, and direct, long-time exposition, evaluation has to be evaluated.

Computer visualizations and virtual realities grow more important, but studies on the effects of simulation techniques upon experts and users are rare. As a contribution to the field of architectural simulation, an expert - user comparison of CAD versus endoscopy/model simulations of a Vienna city project was realized in 1995. The Department for Spatial Simulation at the Vienna University of Technology provided diaslides of the planned city development at Aspern showing a) CAD and b) endoscopy photos of small-scale polystyrol models. In an experimental design, they were presented uncommented as images of "PROJECT A" versus "PROJECT B" to student groups of architects and non-architects at Vienna and Salzburg (n= 95) and assessed by semantic differentials. Two contradictory hypotheses were tested: 1. The "selective framing hypothesis" (SFH) as the subjective theory of planners, postulating different judgement effects (measured by item means of the semantic differential) through selective attention of the planners versus material- and context-bound perception of the untrained users. 2. The "general framing hypothesis" (GFH) postulates typical framing and distraction effects of all simulation techniques affecting experts as well as non-experts.

The experiment showed that -counter-intuitive to expert opinions- framing and distraction were prominent both for experts and lay people (= GFH). A position effect (assessment interaction of CAD and endoscopy) was present with experts and non-experts, too. With empirical evidence for "the medium is the message", a more cautious attitude has to be adopted towards simulation products as powerful framing (i.e. perception- and opinion-shaping) devices.

title Route analysis in complex buildings

summary Analysis of pedestrian circulation in buildings is usually performed in the early stages of the design process or later on with respect to a specific design problem such as fire safety. In both cases, the analysis relates more to wayfinding, i.e. search for a route on the basis of fundamental normative criteria. Wayfinding analysis in existing buildings is useful for the comparison between “rational” behaviour and actual usage but this comparison does little to explicate the observed structure of pedestrian circulation. In contrast to wayfinding, route analysis deals with the registration and assessment of actual patterns of pedestrian circulation in existing buildings. These patterns are represented topologically and geometrically. The geometric representation makes use of norms underlying building codes in order to reach an appropriate level of abstraction. Route representations are implemented on top of a building representation of relevant spatial and building elements. The building representation serves both as input and output for the route analysis. Input and output are largely automated, including production of the geometric route locally (i.e. within each space) and measurement of route distance and complexity. Use data are collected in an alphanumeric database and linked dynamically to the geometric and topological representation. Route analysis supports and refines other forms of post-occupancy evaluation by adding important dynamic aspects to activity allocation and compartmentalization.

The Swedish experiences are concentrated to the fields of housing, quality of life and social care.

summary The airport is one of the most essential infrastructures of cities. An important issue of the airport design is that passengers must be able to find their way efficiently. Although the designers adopt the post-evaluation after the operation, it takes a long time to conduct the on-site wayfinding experiment, and the number of participants of the experiment is also limited. Moreover, conventional post-occupancy evaluation suffers from security control and quarantine inspection that can not be carried out in the field. We proposed a VR enhanced POE approach that carries out an online wayfinding experiment to obtain numerous and detailed data, which significantly improves the efficiency of the post-occupancy evaluation project, and is validated by an affordable small-scale on-site experiment. Meanwhile, the cause for low wayfinding efficiencies, such as the symmetric space, the ambiguous direction and the redundant information on signboards are found and corresponding optimization suggestions are presented. The following signage system optimization project conducted in the terminal is welcomed by the passengers according to monthly questionnaires.

title Residential satisfaction in housing estates: a Hong Kong perspective

summary Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) has been developed to address the problem of acquiring feedback from the occupants who are, arguably, in the best position to provide information for a future design database. This paper presents a study of the factors (on both physical and social levels), which influence residential satisfaction of a sample of occupants in a chosen residential area in Hong Kong; factor analysis and multiple regression were carried out on the data. A comparison is also made of the perceived factors of dissatisfaction amongst the public and private housing occupants. It is suggested that a wider systematic coverage of the subject through investigative and diagnostic POE should be carried out in Hong Kong.
