summary This study explores the advantages of setting a two-dimension continuum topology optimization whose output resembles structures to be assembled from discrete members, within one integrated procedure. The proposed Skeleton Sketch method uses algorithms that connect virtual centers of gravity found in the continuum matrices of the well-known Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) optimization method. The connecting lines are further upgraded to steel profiles through matching required and available cross- sectional areas, obtaining a discrete version of the topology optimized system. Examples of the algorithm’s application on the parametric structural design of three case studies are provided. Results show that the method provides the designer with several layout alternatives through the process, proving to be a versatile and feasible design tool for practical realization of the outcomes of topology optimization.

title Exploring 3D printing techniques for the hybrid fabrication of discrete topology optimized structures

summary The application of topology optimization methods in architecture, while useful for conceptual design explorations, seems to be limited by the practical realization of continuum-type design outcomes. One way to overcome this limitation is setting up design and fabrication techniques, through which continuum domains become discrete structures. This study investigates to which extent discrete optimized systems can be built using a hybrid approach combining 3D printing and analogue fabrication techniques. The procedure is based on an algorithm in Grasshopper (Rhinoceros) that translates continuum topologies obtained in MATLAB into discrete systems, providing alternatives depending on the targeted volume fraction, the intended surface smoothness of the structural components and building material. The study focuses on fabrication aspects and structural performance of discrete structures using 3D printed nodes. Experimental tests evaluate the compressive strength of different types of filaments with varied infill percentages. Final prototypes are fabricated using a hybrid technique involving the use of 3D printed nodes to assemble bar-arrays comprising wooden members. Results provide a critical appraisal of the limitations and potentialities of 3D printing for hybrid fabrication of real scale structures

summary We present an innovative approach to envisioning future architectural spaces by combining Design Fiction principles and Extended Reality (XR) technologies. With the advent of XR technologies, human actions and interactions within spaces may change, necessitating a rethinking of architectural design. This anticipated change reveals a significant gap in current design practices, which typically do not account for such technological influences. In addressing this gap, our study contributes by offering the [des-Fi]XR tool, designed to facilitate collaborative discussions and stimulate innovative thinking among architects and designers. Through the design of immersive environments, the [des-Fi]XR tool allows for the investigation of speculative design scenarios for future architectural spaces in response to evolving human behaviors shaped by XR. A-Frame, an open-source framework, has been utilized in the development of [des-Fi]XR to ensure accessibility across a broad range of devices. This study presents [des-Fi]XR tool to envision future spaces with XR technologies by incorporating a design fiction kit and A-Frame. We discuss the methodology, design principles, and development of [des-Fi]XR, along with a short analysis of its benefits and drawbacks. Finally, we conclude our research by exploring avenues for future research in this field, further highlighting the importance of filling the existing knowledge gap to anticipate and respond to the future of architectural spaces shaped by evolving XR technologies.

summary Innovative solutions are critical in an era marked by global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and urbanization. The FictionXR Framework integrates Extended Reality (XR) with Design Fiction and Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) prototyping to create and think about future spaces with XR tech implementation. This novel integration facilitates discussions about the fusion of the virtual and physical domains and offers an immersive platform for architects to experience and design for future challenges. Through a preliminary study involving newly graduated architects, the efficacy of the framework was tested, shedding light on its potential to catalyze creativity and facilitate collaborative design endeavors. The feedback gathered underscores the promise of the FictionXR Framework, with participants generating speculative narratives and visions while gaining a deeper appreciation for the interplay of XR within architectural contexts. This research explores innovative approaches to architectural practice by combining Design Fiction and Sci-Fi prototyping. It aims to develop strategies that can effectively respond to emerging challenges while embracing imaginative possibilities.

summary The purpose of this study is to determine the parameters of the best possible spatial user interface design for the online shopping experience in mixed reality. In the first phase of the study, ten existing augmented and virtual reality shopping applications are examined, and the spatial relationships of the interfaces used in these experiences and the possibilities of natural interactions provided to the user are compared. In the next phase of the study, the interfaces are evaluated to propose a three-dimensional spatial interface powered by the mixed reality that improves the spatial relationship and neutrality of these interfaces.

summary The ability to arrange information graphically in digitally represented Cartesian space offers obviousadvantages over two-dimensional graphical reductions. Adding time to the spatial palette provides adynamic dimension. Cartesian space used for these purposes, however, reinforces an ocular-centricapproach to information delivery. We can include sound in order to seek a sensory balance, therebyimproving cognition and enhancing dimensionality within an ‘information space’, especially for complexmaterial requiring greater interactivity or ‘audience’ participation. summary A Multidimensional Presentation Environment (MPE) is defined here as a digital environment containing spatially located data that can be navigated by a presenter. Given an array of data types and the potential infinity of the associated datascapes, there is an opportunity to develop systems that assist the presenter in the navigation and analysis of complex information scenarios. This research reports on the utilisation of intelligentagent based software for a better understanding of spatial information representation within the MPE. This is achieved by utilising intelligent agent software to aid the presenter in the searching, retrieving, and articulation of datasets, and the application of such technologies in the generation of time based 3D graphical and audio presentations.

summary This paper reports on the design of spatial sounds for information environments. This research primarily relates to developing the sound component for a software prototype of a presentation environment that integrates realtime three-dimensional graphics with user interaction. For this project sound designers were engaged to examine the design of spatial sounds to examine the issues of dimensionality within presentation environments. The sound design work utilised a range of sound techniques: real world recording and modulation, static sound collections and DSP (Digital Signal Processing). The two main themes for the research were exploring sound as both thematic and navigational tools, utilising concepts that address the issues of multi-dimensionality within a time based presentation environment.

summary This paper examines the connections between digital architectures and interaction design with an emphasis on how the latter informs the former. Digital spatial interfaces have been in development for well over a decade. However there is still a distinct and problematic separation between the function of these spaces architecturally and the functional use of architectural concepts in the design of these spaces. The research presented here outlines an approach to interface design that promotes an architecture that is temporal, interactive and sonic, and is defined explicitly by a functional relationship to its informational content. In particular this research reports on the design of a software prototype that incorporates spatial concepts of interactivity, visualization and sound to assist in the navigation of presentation information, promoting space as a primary interface to an information collection.

summary This paper presents a method to quantify the time and cost impacts on Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) projects resulting from information management driven process changes to the design process. Many engineering and construction companies have implemented information technologies and other changes, fully expecting to save time and cost, gain competitive advantage, improve productivity, better align project objectives, and improve product quality. Previous efforts to quantify benefits have been function or technology specific. The method described herein illustrates the value of evaluating process improvement strategies at the project level to avoid misleading conclusions regarding the actual benefit of investments. The research results strongly suggest that information management strategies applied to the design process may substantially improve total project performance.

summary One of the great challenges for the urban planner/designer is to establish strategies to deal with the increasing complexity of the contemporary city. Among the possibilities of dealing with it, the emergence of the so-called City Information Models (CIM) has presented itself as a promising direction. This paper seeks to contribute to the problem by describing a way to structure a CIM and proposing the creation of a computational application called Carcará, a plugin for a visual programming interface capable of reading and writing to a georeferenced database, allowing the creation of representations not only of the built space, but also manipulations of its semantic characteristics and calculation of a variety of metrics.

summary The present paper describes a research that explores the design and production of customised architectural ceramic components defined through parametric relations of biomorphic inspiration and to be built through additive manufacturing. In this sense, is presented a case study that develops a system of both architectural and structural components - a column system. The definition process of the system is mediated by computational design, implementing not only structural analysis and optimization strategies, but also mimetic formal characteristics of nature to an initial grid, creating a model that adapts its formal attributes, depending on its assumptions and the material constraints. This process resulted in the definition of a set of solutions that better answer to a specific design problem.

summary Architecture is an area of study in which design solution visualization is essential. It is during the design phase that the projective doubts are clarified. Augmented Reality (AR) enables the visualization of virtual elements in the real environment. In this paper, visualization strategies will be presented in Augmented Reality for the discussion of alternatives design solution in architecture. These strategies are presented in an experiment in which perceptions of users are observed through a workshop. We compare two display strategies (AR mobile x AR projected) in four types of representation. As a contribution, we present a critical analysis of the benefits and limitations of the strategies used.

summary This paper anticipates the use of 3-D data for the environmental analysis of cities, aiming to provide useful tools for urban designers. The extraction of urban environmental quality (UEQ) indicators from 3-D information using innovative tools is presented. We will introduce our recent research about the implementation of computational tools for the analysis, evaluation and design of the urban space and compare results that can be obtained with different data sources. In particular, we are going to present the advantages of urban models generated from LiDAR data, by showing the case-study analysis of the measurement and quantification of urban vegetation indicators. Results show that the limitation to solar accessibility on roofs is not relevant for the case-study area. Moreover, a set of environmental and morphological indicators could inform urban designers for decision making processes about the distribution of vegetation inside the urban fabric.

summary In this paper we proposed a visual perception analysis to be used as a methodology for the evaluation, communication and design of places. The work was applied for the urgent challenge of re-thinking industrial areas which characterize the visual landscape of numerous urban fringes. We used simulation of the present and future of heritage as a design, evaluation and communication device. The experimental focuses on visual analysis techniques for mapping current conditions of the image of productive landscapes. In particular, 2-D digital maps, 3-D digital urban modelling, spherical panoramic pictures, cylindrical videos, Google Maps and Street View, and a post-processing work on photography and models were tested on an industrial area located in the urban fringe of Milan characterized by the diffused presence of productive landscapes.

summary Driven by the statement: what if buildings could think, this work continues with another inquiry, what would happen if the building elements knew how to grow, regardless of the material they are made of, or if that building could respond throughout history to different challenges or structural needs. Therefore, this paper considers studying other structures evolved in time, such as trees and their predefined laws of growth. The construction elements could then be developed, responding to future scenarios, having the capacity to grow in volume, conserving their material properties, as a dynamic organism. This work presents a parametric approach, which, with the help of FEA, will stimulate the growth of the cross-section of a tree stem as if it were the cross-section of a building element.
