summary This research documents the results of an international collaborative artistic production. The "Expo 3D / 20" initiative emerged from the celebration of the 20th Conference of the Ibero-American Digital Graphic Society, held in Buenos Aires in 2016. Each work represents one of the twenty editions of the conference, starting from the reinterpretation and resignification of their subjects, graphics, papers, etc., and were made using different digital techniques, or mixed techniques that combine analog and digital procedures. This article aims to examine, evaluate and quantify the results of the collaborative experience, and reflect on the interactions and creative potential of crowdthinking.

summary This paper approaches the literature that combines the fields of Architectural Computing and Architecture and Urbanism produced in Latin America during the first two decades of the 21st Century. The main objective is to map the advancement of Digital Technology in Architecture and Urbanism in the context of the Third Industrial Revolution, in order to identify perspectives towards a Fourth Industrial Revolution. As methodology was applied a chronological survey of the literature produced in book format, predominantly printed in the 21st Century by Latin Americans researches in leading digital themes. At last, it can be verified that the production is still very scarce and still has not incorporated, in a significant way, the themes related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

summary Metro stations in multi-modal transport hubs accommodating complex passenger flows with diverse travel purposes pose challenges for wayfinding. Passengers unfamiliar with the environment mostly rely on navigational clues provided by signage to find their way. This study aims to evaluate and improve wayfinding signage within metro stations at transport hubs. Considering the needs of both passengers and operational staff, this research proposed an evaluation method combining small-scale on-site tracking with large-scale online virtual experiments, along with three evaluation indicators. This study focused on the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station metro station to improve the signage systems by post-occupancy evaluation (POE) using this method. A thorough analysis of 4,368 wayfinding samples collected by the online virtual reality wayfinding experiment identified five shortcomings that required attention and improvement. Based on the POE results, this study proposed optimization suggestions for the signage systems in this metro station, providing valuable insights into the design and optimization of wayfinding systems in metro stations.

title A Network Representation and Algorithm for Task Planning

summary An activity planning algorithm based on a network representations of conditions and actions is presented. The algorithm performs backward expansions on each desired condition in order to express them as a combination of initial conditions and actions. A global problem network of actions and conditions is used to represent the history of successful conditions expansions. This representation maintains consistency and improves the efficiency of search procedure. Interpretation of this problem network leads to an actions network from which feasible plans are directly obtained. The network algorithm was implemented in LISP and is applied here to solve blockworld problems similar to those found in the artificial intelligence planning literature. However, the algorithm and the network representation are general and intended to be used as an analytical tool in planning systems that formulate sequences of multiple actions

summary Globalisation and international competition force the AEC industry to change its work and collaboration practices. The traditional way of working is evolving into a more integrated process, and the traditional use of “synchronised passive” files and paperbased communication is being replaced with ICT based solutions. Currently, the AEC community is at an intermediate stage, i.e., it is shifting to “online” electronic documents. In this paper, a new concept called “eDocument” (eDoc) is introduced. The eDoc project is a cooperative effort in order to develop and implement a generic dynamically structured, multimedia, multi-channel, and multimodal information system as a means for communication in AEC projects. The major innovation in the concept is that, although it uses a repository, the focus is on the “logical and physical” specifications of the eDoc concept as a shared tele-workspace that is accessible through multiple platforms

summary Two exhibits made evident that complex shapes generated through scripts are the attention focus of both educators and professionals. These projects did not start with traditional representation conventions (front view, plan and cross section) but with biological, geometrical or mathematical references, where patterns are recurrent. Using scripts it is possible to write and represent possibilities; blogs allow the publication of the results. In this context, a blog was created (2008) to publish methods and subjects extracted from workshops and manuals featuring rhinoscripting. During a year more than 57000 users accessed; the results of this documentation are hereby presented.

summary The cultural heritage domain, as many other domains, is invited to experience new "designs" in harmony with new development and consuming approaches. It should accept to deal with under continuous design objects & information on the first hand and the fact that every information consumer could become, somewhere and/or sometime, information broadcaster, on the other hand. In this paper we present some exploratory projects newly realized within the workshop "HyperHeritage" (Augmented Cultural Heritage) of the Master Program Net. This workshop, which is animated by three staff members of the department of digital humanities, invites 15 master program students to rethink the cultural heritage objects and information by considering the potential uses of information and communication technologies and their socio-cultural impacts. By the following, we intend to present four projects on "HyperHeritage" resulting from this collaborative approach. summary Taking Street view map and Random forest model as the applications and four consumption places in Beijing as case studies, this study proposes a method that maps spatial perception preferences at the local scale to the global scale by following steps: Firstly, download street view images of consumption places from BaiduMap API, then combined the preference of the local street view images scores by the volunteers of both genders and the proportion of visual elements in the images, predicted the preference level of case areas at the global scale by the Random forest model, and finally, through FCN model and sDNA model, fully revealed the gender differentiation phenomenon of consumption places at the image, function and location contents. The results indicate that both genders have a preference for places of Catering function. Besides, females generally prefer consumption places with more conspicuous signboards, greening and better spatial design quality, and have clear pre-determined consumption targets; males generally prefer consumption places with more conspicuous columns, smaller signboards, and have less demand for the spatial design quality of consumption places.

summary This research aims to assess the usage of urban equipment, particularly children's playgrounds in public squares. It employs a prototype using a VGA camera connected to a Raspberry Pi equipped with image learning algorithms. The unit functions autonomously, from data collection to processing, revealing information about the patterns of space utilization. This information is synthesized into a comprehensive spatio-temporal activity map illustrating playground equipment activity. This visual representation offers actionable insights for urban managers, spotlighting underutilized areas and informing strategies to improve child-centered recreational facilities. Conducted in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, the prototype has successfully demonstrated its capability to capture and interpret data into relevant insights, the findings suggest that there are indications that the most frequently used equipment by children are those strategically located within the line of sight of adults.. Additionally, it highlighted that seating areas for accompanying adults are typically overcrowded, as adult behavior tends to be stationary compared to the more dynamic activity of children.

summary This paper continues the discourse of the round table session of eCAADe 2002 on the problems of existing digital city models. It reviews recent papers on the subject, suggests criteria for the improvement of digital city models, and points out some applications for a broader base of users, and particularly in the field of architectural education. it is suggested here that the design professions of architecture and urban design should be more comprehensively included by broadening the approach to 3dcms. Changes in contemporary architectural, urban planning and design theory, collaborative design practice and constructivist education, lead us to suggest a change of emphasis from 2D urban planning principles to those of 3D urban design and morphology.

summary In this paper we present a method of synthesizing data in the narrative discourse of two architecture publications, in order to analyze, compare and explore to what extent it is possible to understand a book on different abstract levels using static data. The information in the book is reorganized and shown in different diagrams, used as a didactic visualization method. This allows the representation of a set of kinetic information that cannot be perceived simultaneously.

summary The relation of the architectural community to the generally established scientific rules always seems to be problematic. The same refers to the general trend of increasing quantity by neglecting quality at the same time. Nevertheless, the present situation of the rising quantification in comparison to the wider context calls for special attention. The extent of socio-spatial consequences requires the identification of the wider system references, useful to introduce the lacking cultural criteria into the general evaluation system. Combined with the identification of the ‘scientific’ level in architecture, this could change the perception that architectural design lacks its scientific tradition. Both may stimulate architects to take their own scientific traditions more seriously, enhancing the tradition itself. The paper contributes to the discussion about the excellence criteria of science in architecture with the explanation of the ‘formal’ proofs of relevance and vitality of architectural research to replace the favoritised ‘impact factor’ differentiation, where it is still (or even more intensively) taken as the key criterion of research excellence.

summary A review of VDS in recent eCAADE and ACADIA papers indicates that they tend to place most emphasis on the communication technology employed. Research is often most concerned with setting up the environment which facilitates the studio. The difficulties in simulating real-time design learning situations in VDS can be compared to earlier years of CAAD research in design education, where most emphasis was placed on the medium itself. However, in the field of CAAD research work, the focus is shifting toward the integration of digital tools with design process, and a rethinking of the role of analogue tools in that process. The limitations to current VDS are almost certain to change rapidly as more affordable and faster means of communication become available. Nevertheless, underlying pedagogical problems deserve attention in order to direct efforts towards viable models of architectural education where VDS are employed. This paper assumes a critical stance to the conventionally presented use of VDS, and asserts that the close integration of design-process with new technology will become an increasingly pressing issue. So that VDS progresses beyond the development of distributed images and a means to communicate design, it is acknowledged that they create a particular learning environment requiring attention from facilitators. The implementation of the suggested criteria will assist the integration of pedagogical engaged-learning objectives with VDS digital technologies.

summary In leading architectural offices where digital technologies have become de facto part and parcel of the architectural design process, it has become pointless to talk about "architectural design" and "digital technology" as separate phenomena. In fact, those offices showcase advances in their designs through combined developments in process, tools, teams, materials, and research. Far from being a passive addition to conventional processes, digital technologies transform the whole spectrum of architectural endeavour. Architects and offices in the front of these development showcase a particular competence set that is distinct from others, which we propose to call "digital leadership." We define "digital leadership" as the "integration of distributed knowledge from social sciences/humanities and digital technologies through the integrative artistic power of Architectural Design applied to the built environment as a real-world research and design laboratory." Although there have been many digital pioneers since the early 1960'ies, we can now see digital leadership as a more mainstream movement. However, there is no unified framework or theoretical understanding of digital leadership. In this paper we report on work carried out on four universities which has the aim to build such a framework.

summary The use of "digital technology" - computer software, new material application, rapid prototyping, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Virtual Reality, collaborative design - is no longer a novel and innovative aspect of architectural design. In fact, many offices and architects use a varied mix of these technologies in their daily practice. We can observe that digital technology has become a mature part of architectural practice. In this paper, we want to outline an outstanding level of excellence in the use of digital technologies that enable certain widely acknowledged offices (for example Foster and Partners, UN Studio, BIG, and so on) to take their design work to high degree of quality and performance. We call this level and phenomenon "digital leadership." Digital leadership goes beyond technical digital skills. It is an integrated and holistic approach that makes no distinction between "architectural design" and "digital technology" and in fact creates a new blend of both. We propose that digital leadership has six key areas: Technological Ecologies; Creativity, Knowledge Processes, and Experimentation; Design and Research; Human Resources and Leadership; Collaborative and Explorative Environments and Impact of Digital Leadership. These are discussed in more detail in this paper.

summary Due to the rising interest in urban visualization, a number of issues have emerged that need to be solved for practical application. The most prominent of these issues are: visualization performance and security. Visualization speed concerns the usability of urban visualization. In order to make urban visualization practical, it is necessary to completely hide all latency of loading data. Here we will demonstrate techniques like multi-threading, different rendering methods and level-of-detail that our platform uses to maintain interactive frame-rates in the face of the large amounts of data that are common in urban visualization environments. The secondissue, securing the geometry and image information contained in an urban model is of eminent importance for the owner of the data. We will point out a number of techniques that have been incorporated in our viewing platform in order to maintain a high level of data security: data compression and encryption, obfuscation of access keys, compression and encryption of executables. While perfect security is an unattainable goal, the multi-staged approach of security in our system significantly raises the cost of illegally obtaining access to the geometry or image data. By demonstrating solutions for both issues our framework serves as a viable platform for urban visualization.

summary This paper investigates the efforts and benefits of the implementation of point clouds into architectural design processes and tools. Based on a study on the principal work processes of designers with point clouds the prototypical plugin/library - Volvox - was developed for the parametric modelling environment Grasshopper in Rhino. The prototype allows us to discuss the necessary technical layer for the task, benchmark the tool, and finally to evaluate the benefits, that this approach has for architectural practice, through a series of use cases.
