summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to determine the influence of Alberti’s treatise on Architecture, De re aedificatoria, on the Portuguese Renaissance architecture, through the use of a computational framework. One of the project tasks entailed the translation of the treatise’s textual descriptions concerning the morphological, proportional and algorithmic principles of the sacred buildings into a shape grammar. Subsequently a computational model was developed, in order to proceed to the derivation of examples of the same language. This article discusses the use of analytical shape grammars to undertake an architectural analysis, as well as the fact of the source of this grammar and correspondent architectural language to be a text instead of a set of buildings and designs. It reviews the methodology to implement the shape grammar and describes the several stages of development, following the interpretation of treatise into a consistent set of shape rules, by defining their spatial relations, parameters and conditions. It also reviews the implementation of this knowledge into a generative parametric computer program through visual programming language Grasshopper.

summary This paper presents a research on the use of shape grammars as an analytical tool in the history of architecture. It evolves within a broader project called Digital Alberti, whose goal is to determine the influence of De re aedificatoria treatise on Portuguese Renaissance architecture, making use of a computational framework (Krüger et al., 2011).Previous work was concerned with the development of a shape grammar for generating sacred buildings according to the rules textually described in the treatise. This work describes the transformation of the treatise grammar into another grammar that can also account for the generation of Alberti’s built work.

summary This article aims to identify and analyze inductive aspects (those which go from particular instances to the general configuration) present in ideation phases of digital design projects (such as apps, websites and tools for companies’ internal communications), with special emphasis on how induction occurs in creative processes. Using a qualitative methodological approach, the analysis is based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with digital designers, on a literature review on the subjects of creativity and classic design method, as well as on a design documentary. Research findings suggest the importance of combining the use of verbal and visual communication resources in group dynamics; the need for designers to be highly proficient in the tools and techniques used while generating new alternatives, regardless of their physical/analogical or virtual/digital nature; and to allocate, whenever possible, ample time to explore ideas in order to push the limits of each project being developed.

summary Kinetic systems offers new perspectives and design innovation in research and practice. These systems have been used by architects as an approach that embeds computation intelligence to create flexible and adaptable architectural spaces according to users changing needs and desires as a way to respond to an increasingly technological society. The presented research attempts to answer to this question based on the results of a multidisciplinary on-going work developed at digital fabrication laboratory Vitruvius Fablab-IUL in Lisbon. The main goal is to explore the transformation of the shape of a construction by mechanisms which allow adaptation either to environmental conditions or to the needs of the user. This paper reports the initial development of a kinetic system based on an origami foldable surface actuated by a user. The user can manipulate a small scale model of the surface and evaluate at all times if it is achieving the desired geometry.

summary Digital fabrication makes it possible to create precise and replicable components from engineered timber products. Coupled with strategic design, these tools can be leveraged to produce intelligent and informed jointing conditions that facilitate material arrangements of unprecedented efficiency and strength. This project builds on an existing body of knowledge in the field of digital wood design and fabrication to examine the design, fabrication and structural capabilities of massively modulated plywood space frames. The practice based research finds that while the geometry of a timber space frame is of excellent strength the detailing of joints and overall structural rigidity is a key concern.

summary This paper discusses the design and development of scale masonry structures using robot arms, computer vision hardware and bespoke computational workflows. In parallel to the development of full-scale masonry solutions using a Cable Driven Parallel Robot (CDPR), a faster method for testing large numbers of brick elements is needed to verify buildability, mitigate collisions, and think differently about recycled materials during real-world construction activities. Additionally, by incorporating scanning and analysis technology, materials can be digitized, and their attributes translated into variables for placement within an intended structure.

summary There is a persistent need among Hong Kong Architecture students to develop greater aptitude for critical and design thinking. The mechanics of criticality entail observation, reflection and the development of a knowledgeable response. This important process aligns with a tool-based iterative design research approach, where a cycle of action, observation, reflection, and reaction can take place. In order to complement fundamentals in architectural design, a focus on tools and tool-making approaches toward the development of a critical architectural proposal needs to be incorporated into core curriculum. Through the integration of robotics, automation and computational design approaches into the design studio environment, tool making for producing architectural media (drawings and models) can most effectively be explored. With an emphasis on design and programming tools for component fabrication and assembly, students can develop their own criterion for evaluation as a knowledge-based response to their investigations and proposed architectural systems.

summary By 2050 an estimated 70 percent of the world's population will live in megacities with more than 10 million citizens (Renner 2018). This growth calls for new target-oriented, interdisciplinary methods in urban planning and design in cities to meet sustainable development targets. In response, this paper exemplifies an integrated urban design process on a master plan project in Vienna. The objective is to investigate the potential towards a holistic, digital, urban design process aimed at the development of a practical methodology for future designs. The presented urban design process includes analyses and simulation tools within Rhinoceros 3D and its plug-in Grasshopper as quality-enhancing mediums that facilitate the creative approaches in the course of the project. The increase in efficiency and variety of design variants shows a promising future for the practical suitability of this approach.

summary This paper investigates the use of computer analogies for naturally inspired optimisation techniques as an aid to developing the site layout and massing for the new World Trade Centre development in Pristina Kosovo, which is being designed and developed by 4M Group architectural company, in conjunction with the Advanced Modelling Group Aedas. The development of a genetic algorithm will incorporate various techniques, that have been developed in the field of multi-objective optimisation, to create three dimensional massing models, and site layout solutions which partially fulfil the Prisina brief requirements, which are taken from specifications created by 4M Group. Genetic algorithms are based on natural evolutionary principles which are explained in this paper. It will incorporate Pareto concepts to manage the optimisation of the various objective functions. For example, these will include volume and position of units, which will ensure that the different and sometime conflicting needs of the site are balanced throughout the optimisation. This type of problem is often known as an NP-complete (non-determinate polynomial time) problem. This will provide architects and planners with a number of Pareto optimised site massing solutions as an aid to the design process. An initial investigation into the specifics of the Pristina site requirements, will be followed by an investigation into the the genetic algorithm which is created in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) linked with AutoCAD as the graphical output of the code. The embryology (development) of the various solutions from the genetic information incorporates an ‘ant’ pheromone trail model, which simulates the action of ants during food foraging, as a tool for initial route planning within the site. Diffusion and cellular automata are used during the development of the solution to construct the massing for the site.
