summary With the flourishing of architectural creation via all kinds of media, a comparison among physical, virtual and mental space becomes a fevered issue about spatiality due to the similar sense of space. This study reveals that even if the spaces constructed with distinct essence, a body-surrounding relation is an efficient way to formalize the problems of spatiality and relativity among three typical spaces. The sense of space and relative position reasoning were depicted with the Space-Transforming Test and the SpaceComprehending Test as a new concept about spatiality in general.

summary The spatial nature of cyberspace has not yet fully defined. This paper presents both analogous and comparative approach to reveal the spatial nature of cyberspace based on a conventional architecture theory, Space Syntax. Two types of city, the physical and the virtual, are compared in order to realize the configurational properties of cyberspace. The findings of this study indicate that the theoretical assumptions of existing architecture theories need to be altered so that cyberspace can be well interpret and understand.

summary The purpose of this study is to reveal some aspects of the spatial nature of cyberspace by applying a cognitive approach, which is to decode cyberspatial cognition generated from the spatial experiences of an architectural designer. Two types of cities, the physical and the virtual, are compared in order to further realize the spatial knowledge of cyberspace. The results of this research indicate that understanding spatial characteristics of virtual environment can base upon investigating cognitive sketches. In addition, architectural designers might benefit from the findings of this study.

By integrating the nature of modularity in prefabricated housing design, a proposed web-based design system will provide information filtering questionnaires to assist customers in selecting appropriate design components. A methodology has been developed that can generate design options based on the client’s needs and available modular components from selected product suppliers making it possible to simulate the final design before processing orders for assembling and manufacturing.

summary The paper introduces the initial finding of Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) mycelium growing on the Phyllostachys makinoi (PM) bamboo substrate and taking advantage of mycelium composite's elevated compressive strength, lightweight, and thermal insulation properties; this study proposes a structural module system for a barrel vault structure. This research investigated 5:1, 2:1, and 1:1 bamboo-fiber and bamboo-powder mixtures with 5% C6H12O6 and 65% water growing in a 25°C controlled environment. Due to the powder form of the PM substate, PO mycelium has easy access to the pentosan inside the substrate. As a result, the 1:1 ratio mixture has a higher growing rate than the 5:1 and 2:1 mixture. The experiment also indicates that the mycelium composite wall thickness shall be less than 40 mm for optimal PO mycelium growth when using PM substrate.

summary This paper addresses CAAD from an organizational point of view. We employ recent developments in organizational economics to model the organizational processes in building design. Based on an analysis of (i) the cost of transferring knowledge, and (ii) agency cost in existing design organizations, we propose a framework for redesigning organizational processes and for developing appropriate design information systems. The paper describes work on a larger ongoing research project at the Harvard Design School on intra- and interorganizational design information systems.

summary In this paper, we describe Internet and Architecture (i+a), a research and teaching program, startedfour years ago at Harvard Design School, to explore the possibilities that lie in the convergence of aphysical with a virtual architecture. The approach starts with the analysis of everyday verbs and thechanges that occur in the virtualization of everyday situations, and moves on to critically rethinkexisting architectural typologies and develop new architectures that combine physical and virtualcomponents. This paper describes our experiences with the approach in the year 2001-2002. summary This paper describes a prototype Dynamic Urban Information Model (DUIM) designed to facilitate strategic urban redevelopment, that is, the process of determining precise architectural interventions to set off, guide and condition redevelopment activities. The idea of the DUIM is based on the notion that in order to attain effective strategic redevelopment, an integrated approach addressing the complex interactions of the factors involved in urban life and growth is required. Accordingly, an urban model for this purpose must include not only spatial and formal considerations, but also social, political, economical and ecological aspects. Through a case-study involving the redevelopment of a post-industrial site, this paper explains the rationale of the DUIM in terms of its formal structure, its database, and its application.

summary This thesis employs recent developments in coordination theory to analyze and map the coordination processes among participating firms in building design. The process model enables an understanding of the activities and dependencies in the collaborative design process, based on which potential implications of Interorganizational Information Systems (IOS), such as concurrent design platforms, vertical information links and electronic marketplaces, can be understood and critically assessed. Part One defines the parameters of the research, and contrasts the implementation of IOS in the aerospace, automobile and consulting industry to the state of practice in the building design industry. From the comparison, the need for fundamentally rethinking and redesigning the building design process is derived. Part Two describes how this can be accomplished by making the coordination processes in building design explicit. The building design process is decomposed into its core activities and dependencies, and new ways of recomposing the processes are identified which use alternative coordination mechanisms facilitated by IOS. Part Three describes the implications of the process model. Suggestions for appropriate IOS are made, and evidence of IOS applications in design is given in the analysis of four field studies, and in an example redesign of a design process.

title Inconsistent Affective Reaction: Sentiment of Perception and Opinion in Urban Environments

summary The ascension of social media platforms has transformed our understanding of urban environments, giving rise to nuanced variations in sentiment reaction embedded within human perception and opinion, and challenging existing multidimensional sentiment analysis approaches in urban studies. This study presents novel methodologies for identifying and elucidating sentiment inconsistency, constructing a dataset encompassing 140,750 Baidu and Tencent Street view images to measure perceptions, and 984,024 Weibo social media text posts to measure opinions. A reaction index is developed, integrating object detection and natural language processing techniques to classify sentiment in Beijing Second Ring for 2016 and 2022. Classified sentiment reaction is analysed and visualized using regression analysis, image segmentation, and word frequency based on land-use distribution to discern underlying factors. The perception affective reaction trend map reveals a shift toward more evenly distributed positive sentiment, while the opinion affective reaction trend map shows more extreme changes. Our mismatch map indicates significant disparities between the sentiments of human perception and opinion of urban areas over the years. Changes in sentiment reactions have significant relationships with elements such as dense buildings and pedestrian presence. Our inconsistent maps present perception and opinion sentiments before and after the pandemic and offer potential explanations and directions for environmental management, in formulating strategies for urban renewal.

summary Presently, only a small percentage of people in the world typically hire an architect to design and build a home which is tailored to their preference. Besides the architect’s fee, clients also need to wait an interminable time for design and construction. Factory-made prefabricated housing systems tried to solve this problem previously. However, most pioneers failed to address the issues of variability and individual needs (Kieran & Timberlake, 2004). Plants closed because they produced more than the market demand, and prefabricated housing provided less flexibility than the traditional stick-built housing. The advanced digital technology makes it possible to communicate design ideas and concepts to others more effectively. The project delivery process leads itself to customization, embodying principles of lean production (Pine, 1993), flexible computer-integrated design interaction with clients, and reduced cycle times; all effecting rapid response between consumers and producers.

summary InterLoop employs previously developed workflows that enable multi-planar robotic bending of metal tubes with high accuracy and repeatability (Huang and Spaw 2022). The scale and complexity is managed by employing augmented reality (AR) technology in two capacities, fabrication and assembly (Jahn et al. 2018; Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). The AR display overlays part numbers, bending sequences, expected geometry, and robot movements in real time as the robot fabrication is occurring. For assembly purposes, part numbers, centerlines, and their expected positional relationships are projected via quick response (QR) codes spatially tracked by the Microsoft Hololens 2 (Microsoft 2019). This is crucial due to the length and self-similarity of complex multi-planar parts that make them difficult to distinguish and orient correctly. Leveraging augmented reality technology and robotic fabrication uncovers a novel material expression in tubular structures with bundles, knots, and interweaving (Figure 1).

summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

summary Past studies have demonstrated that connectionist artificial intelligence (AI) has superior capabilities for style-based generative design because it automatically searches, extracts, and applies features according to the data-represented probabilistic profile of an architectural style. To further navigate its architectural affordance, this practice-led research project explores employing connectionist artificial intelligence to produce Islamic-style architectural forms that have historically revealed environmental intelligence by embedding sociocultural factors in response to the physical and human environmental design heritage. The project applies the Pix2Pix model and inverts the logic of some existing studies to predict the building plans from daylight maps. Use multi-objective optimisation algorithms to iteratively optimise factors such as building porosity, spatial quality, and microclimate, and use it as a condition to apply a Pix2Pix to generate a corresponding porosity model that is parametrised for the further design process. The model was trained on 120 augmented, paired images based on the 30 selected examples of Islamic architecture from the Damascus Atlas to capture the relationship between the massing distribution of walls and the arrangement of major elements in an Islamic courtyard house and its thermal performance. This study seeks to test if connectionist AI can be used as a generative design tool to understand the historical development of spatial relationships in Islamic courtyard houses. It focuses on non-repetitive style metrics, embedding physical and cultural factors into data representation. The resulting environmentally intelligent model adapts to the context, with optimisation being a pragmatic design guide rather than the ultimate goal. Although the inference is based on objective probabilistic facts, the influence of the informational framework interpreted by the designers must be acknowledged.
