summary Painterly Expansion: Fields & Flows is a series of intricate topological sculptures crafted through a collaborative design process between an artist and algorithms. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence and multi-agent algorithms utilized in digital design optimization and automation, this research investigates the role of the artist in generative form-making. Painterly Expansion explores the emergent beauty that occurs from the tension between the handcraft of sculpture and algorithmic design processes. This series of work builds upon coded representations of natural systems that form the intricacies of our coral reefs. The algorithm is designed to capture flow and directionality present in aquatic flora and geological formations as seen in Figure 1. The design process operates in real-time where the artist guides, reshapes, and details the sculptures as they take shape. By demonstrating the symbiosis between the artificial and the artist, the sculptures encourage audiences to embrace new ways of thinking and envision a future where technology and human creativity work together.

summary As strategies evolve using digital means to navigate design in architecture, critical process-based approaches are essential to the discourse. The often complex integration of design, analysis, and fabrication through digital technologies is wholly reliant upon a process-basis necessitating the use of a design feedback loop, which reinforces critical decision-making and challenges the notions of how we produce, visualize, and analyze information in the service of production and assembly. Central to this process-based approach is the effective and innovative integration of information and the interrogation of material based explorations in the making of architecture. This fabrication ‘ecology’ forces designers to engage complexity and accept the unpredictability of emergent systems. It also exposes the process of working to critique and refine feedback loops in light of complex tools, methods, materials, site, and performance considerations. In total, strategies for engaging this ‘ecology’ are essential to accentuate our present understanding of environmental design and theory in relation to digital processes for design and fabrication. ¶ This paper recounts a design/fabrication seminar entitled “Constructing Information” in which architecture students examined an environmental design problem by way of the design feedback loop, where their efforts in applying digital design and fabrication methods were driven explicitly by material and site realities and where their work was executed, installed, and critically explored in situ. These projections raise important questions about how information, complexity, and context overlay and merge, and underscore the critical potential of visual, spatial, and material effects as part of a fabrication-oriented design process.

summary Digital technologies have been introduced to students of architecture for over two decades and at present it could be argued that students are producing some of the highest quality designs, and some of the most interesting forms ever to come from University Schools. The value of computer aided design (CAD) is also being demonstrated in architectural practice, with high profile, large budget, bespoke and iconic buildings designed by internationally renowned architects. This paper reviews the changing patterns of architectural design education and considers the contribution digital technologies could make to buildings with more commonplace uses. The study offers a perspective on different kinds of buildings and considers the influence that emerging technologies are having on building form. It outlines digital technologies, alongside students’ application for architectural design and considers the role they could play in the future, in developing a shared architectural language. It is suggested that some of the biggest opportunities for future research will be in the design of external spaces, often a neglected part of architectural design education.

title Large-scale Robotic Fabrication of Polychromatic Relief Glass

summary This research investigates a new digital fabrication method for large-scale polychromatic glass elements. Glass elements with locally differentiated properties usually require manual labor or are limited to film applications of secondary materials that are incapable of producing material texture and relief in glass. To create mono- material glass elements for buildings with customized color, opacity, and relief present in the same glass element, this research investigates a novel robotic multi-channel printing process for industrial float glass. Mono-material polychromatic glasses do not require any additional material and can be fully recycled. This paper presents a design-to-production workflow for the construction scale within feasible cost. Investigations include kilning and material considerations, multi-channel tool and fabrication setup, tool path generation, process parameter calibration, and large-scale prototyping. The co-occurrence of locally varying opacities, colors, material textures, and relief within one glass element enabled by the presented robotic fabrication method could allow for novel optical and decorative features in facades and windows.

summary In sustainable urban development the first stage of the urban design process should consist of a pre-design phase where the context of the site is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this paper we present a methodology for data mining an urban Geographic Information System (GIS) data set, consisting of three main phases: representation, analysis and description. The process reveals a series of block and street typologies at various levels of detail that highlight the different character of two neighbourhoods. This methodology is demanding in the preparation phase and requires a high level of GIS and statistics expertise in the analysis phase. However, it successfully addresses the complex multi-scale and multi-level nature of cities in a systematic way, providing a tool for systematic profiling of neighbourhoods, which is site and problem specific.

summary This project had as goal to investigate how an urban space can be represented, and how can we to present information that facilitated broad and interactive spatial analysis in an easy and friendly way. This target was reached trough the elaboration of a computer application that allowed urban information visualization about Salvador City. This tool let users to build thematic cartography, visualize interactive 3D models, images, etc. Project development already produced two different prototypes. First versions provide a great spatial analyze flexibility, but it interface founded in a workspace defined do not allow user to do all overlayer possible. In this case the tool was a kind of cartographic atlas. The actual version had as design presuppose, to give users more information, interactivity, power and flexibility, adopting new medias, new representation models, and presenting quantitative and qualitative information.

summary This paper presents a method for determining elemental square foot costs and cost significance for residential construction. Using AutoCAD's icon menu and dialogue box' facilities, a non-expert may graphically select (i) residential configuration; (ii) construction quality level; (iii) geographical location; (iv) square foot area; and finally, (v) add-ons, e.g. porches and decks, basement, heating and cooling equipment, garages and carports etc. in order to determine on-site builder's costs. Subsequent AutoLisp routines facilitate data transfer to a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet where an elemental cost breakdown for the project may be determined. Finally, using Lotus 1-2-3 macros, computed data is transferred back to AutoCAD, where all cost significant items are graphically highlighted.

summary Through the integration of microcomputer-aided draughting (CADr), and in particular with AutoCAD, the industries most extensively used CADr program, and automated routines for the production of bills of materials, a dramatic incr-ease in productivity is possible in the architectural design domain. Working from a variety of material take off methods complete cost estimates may be achieved through the manipulation of drawing data and exchanging the information with third-party estimating software. However, the area of study is currently at a formative stage of development and full integration, although technically feasible, is rarely attempted. Therefore, the paper comments on the development of 'in-house' routines using AutoCAD's data extraction features and AutoLISP; reviews current commercial systems of interfacing AutoCAD with bills of materials and automated specification routines; and, finally, discusses possible future advances in this major area of study.

summary The social and economic context of architectural co-operative projects does not support the experimentations with dedicated tools. Therefore, we chose to achieve functional validations and operations of communication about tools usefulness with the use of scenarios. The scenario techniques are usually used in computer science to capture user’s needs and to validate software specifications. After having analyzed the different contexts of scenario usage in computer science, we characterize the specific context of the use of tools in cooperative activities. Then, we report some experiences of functional validation, of tool demonstration and of usefulness validation based on the use of scenarios. We explain in each experience the objectives and their implication in the scenario definition.

summary This paper presents a new system that enables an eXtended Reality (XR) collaborative design review process, by augmenting an existing physical mockup or environment with virtual models at 1:1 scale in-situ. By using this new hybrid approach, existing context can be extended with minimal or no base physical structure through a simulated VR/AR environment to facilitate stakeholder design collaboration in a manner that was previously either cost prohibitive or technically unfeasible. Through combining real and virtual in this way, the sense of realism can be enhanced, increasing engagement and participation in the design process. An approach to apply AR/VR to uncontrolled environments is described, allowing it to overcome challenges such as tracking and mapping, and allowing users to walk around freely in-situ.

Two examples are presented where the system has been used in live project environments, one as a design tool for client review and engagement, and the other as part of a public planning process.

title Shape grammars and their uses : artificial perception, shape generation and computer aesthetics

summary Shape grammars are defined and their uses investigated. Shape grammars provide a means for the recursive specification of shapes. The formalism for shape grammars is designed to be easily usable and understandable by people and at the same time to be adaptable for use in computer programs. Shape grammars are similar to phrase structure grammars, which were developed by Chomsky. Where a phrase structure grammar is defined over an alphabet of symbols and generates a language of sequences of symbols, a shape grammar is defined over an alphabet of shapes and generates a language of shapes. The dissertation is divided into three sections and an Appendix. In the first section: Shape grammars are defined. Some simple examples are given for instructive purposes. Shape grammars are used to generate a new class of reversible figures. Shape grammars are given for some well-known mathematical curves (the Snowflake curve, a variation of Peano's curve, and Hubert's curve). To show the general computational power of shape grammars, a procedure that given any Turing machine constructs a shape grammar that simulates the operation of that Turing machine is presented. Related work on various formalisms for picture grammars is described. A symbolic characterization of shape grammars is given that is useful for implementing shape grammars in computer programs. In the second section, a program that uses a shape grammar to solve a perceptual task is described. The task involves analyzing and comparing line drawings that portray three -dimensional objects of a restricted type. The third section is divided into two parts. First, a formalism for generating paintings is defined. The primary component of this formalism is a shape grammar. The paintings generated are material representations of shapes specified by shape grammars. The computer implementation of this formalism is described. The second part is concerned with aesthetics. A formalism is defined for specifying an aesthetic viewpoint. The formalism is used to specify a particular aesthetic viewpoint for interpreting and evaluating paintings generated using shape grammars. This viewpoint has been implemented on the computer. The net result is that the program described in Section 3 can be used to interactively define the rules for producing a painting, can use the rules to generate and display the resulting painting, and can then evaluate the painting relative to the specific aesthetic viewpoint. Relationships between the formalism for aesthetic viewpoints and information theory and science are touched upon. Finally, the possibility of using this approach to aesthetics to write programs that automatically analyze presented art objects or design new art objects is explored. In the Appendix, a method for constructing the inverse of a Turing machine is presented. This construction was created in response to a problem that is described in the aesthetics section.
