summary A decision making model for selecting the optimal or quasi optimal solar retrofit design solutions for low-income residential buildings is presented. The model can serve the architect as a tool and provide guidance on how to improve the building's thermal performance during the different design stages. The model allows him to consider the contribution of energy conservation solutions vis-a-vis solar energy gains solutions based on accumulating knowledge of design precedents. It also allows the use of different strategies for searching the solutions that best fits the different design stages. summary What do young architects need to know about computer graphics? What "immutable and eternal" models will allow them to perform their best as professional architects? At one time all computer users were computer programmers and the answer was thus rooted in programming expertise, but the era of personally developed software is largely past. An alternative more vocational approach would stress courses in the use of specific programs, but it is hard to imagine a more mutable "object of knowledge" than the practical details of computing in the late twentieth century. In fact, our students are deluged with information: commands, vocabulary, options, sales hyperbole, and "do this, it works" cookbooks. As educators, we face the challenge of identifying that which is "immutable and eternal", and presenting it to our students (and trying to focus their attention on it).

summary An effort to generate discussion, this paper suggests that between 1980 and 1990 a significant and undesirable change has occurred in academic architectural CAD. We have moved from being developers of ideas and technology on the inside of the development loop to being consumers of products developed in the commercial market place, outside the loop. Certain negative consequences are discussed. Finally, some suggestions are made for turning ourselves "right side out" again.

summary The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through computational design strategies and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, with the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of D-Shape technology for underwater reef formations as a design response to coastal erosion. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and reaction-diffusion (through continuous cellular automata - CCA) is implemented in a voxel fi eld at several scales. Discrete voxel space eases the simulation of complex systems and processes (including CFD simulations) via CCA algorithms, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system, which in case of addtive technology can be specifi ed as guided growth.

summary Face-to-face human interaction is divided into "focused" and "unfocused" types. Unfocused interaction often conveys important content and context information and contributes to group cohesiveness and effectiveness. Research in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) and Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) is also concerned with human interaction. CMC tools, such as electronic mail, and CSCW tools, such as Decision Support Systems (DSS) and Group Support Systems (GSS) provide for focused interaction among members of distributed workgroups. However, little has been published regarding unfocused interaction in distributed workgroups, where group members' primary work activities hold "center-stage" and communication activities are peripheral, though this describes many distributed educational and work situations. A framework for studying this type of support using standard web browsers and server applications is described, and informal preliminary results are discussed. Opportunities for future support of peripheral awareness and unfocused interaction are also discussed.

summary The relation of the architectural community to the generally established scientific rules always seems to be problematic. The same refers to the general trend of increasing quantity by neglecting quality at the same time. Nevertheless, the present situation of the rising quantification in comparison to the wider context calls for special attention. The extent of socio-spatial consequences requires the identification of the wider system references, useful to introduce the lacking cultural criteria into the general evaluation system. Combined with the identification of the ‘scientific’ level in architecture, this could change the perception that architectural design lacks its scientific tradition. Both may stimulate architects to take their own scientific traditions more seriously, enhancing the tradition itself. The paper contributes to the discussion about the excellence criteria of science in architecture with the explanation of the ‘formal’ proofs of relevance and vitality of architectural research to replace the favoritised ‘impact factor’ differentiation, where it is still (or even more intensively) taken as the key criterion of research excellence.

title The Body in the Mind: The Bodily Basis of Meaning, Imagination, and Reason

summary This is the first work which systematically put together a sensible story about the intermodal structures (image schemata) linking high-level cognition, like langauge, with the body-rich information of perceptual processing. Johnson's image schemata was the first proposal for this project which was both neurally plausible, given the organization of the cortex into topology preserving maps (contradicting Fodor and Pylshyn's mistaken view), and supported by the evidence from development, in language and conceptual structure. This book spawned debates on schematization in fields ranging from developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neurocomputational modeling, and neuroscience. When the st century cognitive neuroscience writes its chapter on the way semantic processing works at a neural level, it will need to refute those 20th century philosophers of language who thought that language was primarily referential, truth-conditional, and operated on symbols formed independently of bodily perception. This book will be the touchstone for that project.

summary The use of "digital technology" - computer software, new material application, rapid prototyping, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Virtual Reality, collaborative design - is no longer a novel and innovative aspect of architectural design. In fact, many offices and architects use a varied mix of these technologies in their daily practice. We can observe that digital technology has become a mature part of architectural practice. In this paper, we want to outline an outstanding level of excellence in the use of digital technologies that enable certain widely acknowledged offices (for example Foster and Partners, UN Studio, BIG, and so on) to take their design work to high degree of quality and performance. We call this level and phenomenon "digital leadership." Digital leadership goes beyond technical digital skills. It is an integrated and holistic approach that makes no distinction between "architectural design" and "digital technology" and in fact creates a new blend of both. We propose that digital leadership has six key areas: Technological Ecologies; Creativity, Knowledge Processes, and Experimentation; Design and Research; Human Resources and Leadership; Collaborative and Explorative Environments and Impact of Digital Leadership. These are discussed in more detail in this paper.

summary This paper reports on the development of a knowledge based system that can help to assess the reuse potential of idle industrial property. It does not take the place of the architect or engineer, but allows for strategic design factors to be considered in very early and important property redesign and revitalization decisions. The idea is predicated on the judgment that there is a relatively systematic approach to evaluating the reuse potential of vacant property. A frame based approach together with a series of "if-then" rules are used to represent the knowledge domain and procedures required to perform a feasibility analysis. Rules for assessing the impact of the regional economy, industrial market trends, building configuration, building design strategies and the impact of building codes are included in this manner. A prototype of this system system has been implemented on both an Apple Macintosh computer using AAIS Prolog and an IBM AT compatible using Arity/Prolog.

summary Although many administrators and educators are familiar with e-learning programs, learning management systems and portals, fewer may have experience with virtual distributed learning environments and their academic relevance. The blended learning experience of the VIPA e-learning project for architectural students offers some innovative insights into experientially oriented educational interfaces. A comparative analysis of VIPA courses and project results are presented in the paper. Special attention in the discussion is devoted to the improvements of e-learning solutions in architecture. The criterion of the relation between the actual applicability of selected e-learning solutions and elements of collaborative educational interfaces with VR are taken into account. A system of e-learning applicability levels in program and course development and implementation of architectural tectonics in courseware is developed from the evaluation process and which contributes to the discussion of future trends in architectural education.

summary An analysis of AI in design literature, compiled from almost 200 publications from the 1980s onwards. The majority of the sources are proceedings from various conferences. This work is inspired by the Ten Problems for AI in Design (Gero 1991) workshop report, which listed the problems to be tackled in design with AI. Almost 30 years since the publication, it seems most of the Ten Problems cannot be considered solved or even addressed. One of this paper's goals is to identify, categorize and examine the bottlenecks in the adoption of AI in design. The collected papers were analysed to obtain the following data: Problem, Tool, Solution, Stage and Future work. The conclusions drawn from the analysis are used to define a range of existing problems with AI adoption, further illustrated with an update to the Ten Problems. Ideally this paper will spark a discussion on the quality of research, methodology and continuity in research.

summary From the hand-crafted to the highly engineered, braided structures have demonstrated broad versatility across scales, materials, and performance types, leading to their use in a plethora of application domains. Despite this prevalence, braided structures have seen little exploration within a contemporary architectural context. Within the flora robotica project, complex braided structures are a core element of the architectural vision, driving a need for generalized braid design modeling tools that can support fabrication. Due to limited availability of existing suitable tools, this interest motivates the development of a digital toolset for design exploration. In this paper, we present our underlying methods of braid topology representation and physics-based simulation for hollow tubular braids. We contextualize our approach in the literature where existing methods for this class of problem are not directly suited to our application, but offer important foundations. Generally, the tile generation method we employ is an already known approach, but we meaningfully extend it to increase the flexibility and scope of topologies able to be modeled. Our methods support design workflows with both predetermined target geometries and generative, adaptive inputs. This provides a high degree of design agency by supporting real-time exploration and modification of topologies. We address some common physical simulation problems, mainly the overshooting problem and collision detection optimization, for which we develop dynamic simulation constraints. This enables unrolling into realistically straight strips, our key fabrication-oriented contribution. We conclude by outlining further work, specifically the design and realization of physical braids, fabricated robotically or by hand.

It is discovered that both types of representation are deeply linked to thought processes. They are linked to learning, the ability to use existing knowledge, and problem solving strategies. The links between representations, thought processes, and behavior are so deep that even eye movements are partly governed by representations. Choice of representations can affect limited cognitive resources like attention and short-term memory by forcing a person to try to utilize poorly organized information or perform 'translations' from one representation to another. The implications of this evidence are discussed. Based on these findings, a set of guidelines are presented, for digital representations which minimize drain of cognitive resources. These guidelines describe what sorts of characteristics and behaviors a representation should exhibit, and what sorts of information it should contain in order to accommodate and facilitate design. Current attempts to implement such representations are discussed.

summary The projects ‘I, Robot’, ‘New Clothes for Robot Albert’ and ‘Robots House’ are three examples of design projects at the institute for industrial building production (ifib) that illustrate the same didactical approach for the training of students. The common principle is characterised by the confrontation of students of architecture with a kind of task, that almost is not related to architecture and that seems rather strange at the first glance. The background of the task allways has a strong technical regard and is defined by other departments. So already the understanding requires an exchange with some experts of these departments and the solution even a close cooperation with them. In most cases the partners are from the field of mechanical engineering or computer science. The common theme in these three projects is robotics, a forward-looking discipline especially interesting because of its wide complexity as well beyond a purely technical comprehension. In the Project ‘I, Robot’ multidisciplinary teams of students used the Not Quite C developer kit and the Lego Mindstorm Robotics system to develop robots for an indoor rally. This project is repeated annualy at ifib and at RWTH Aachen. In the Project ‘New Clothes for Robot Albert’ students of architecture designed and produced a spacial structure and cover for an existing and running humanoid service robot. This robot was developed by the Institute for Industrial Applications of Informatics and Microsystems (IAIM) of Prof. Dr. Dillmann for experimental purposes regarding learning strategies for service robots. In the Project ‘Robots House’ finaly students of the university cooperate with students of the university of applied science to find a concernment of architecture by today’s and future robots. The background is the demand for service robots in homes of handicapped or elder people triggered by the demographic changes; the approach is to consider today’s service robots as well as handicapped in a certain manner. The project is accompanied by the expert for handicapped accessible planning, Prof. Dr. Loeschcke and by scientists of the IAIM around Dr. Markus Ehrenmann.

summary This study explores the potential of mycelium composites as a sustainable and eco-friendly material for landscape architecture in the context of today's global climate and environmental crisis. Mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, has shown promising properties such as acoustic and thermal insulation, biodegradability, and environmental performance (Vasatko et al., 2022). The central remit of this research is in proposing bespoke computational and robotic fabrication methods and workflows for investigating the performance of mycelial materials and observing their properties and growth response. Taken together, the topic of this paper is to illustrate the application and composition of such fabrication techniques as an integrated multi-material system, capable of combining the complex, organic relationships between clay, lignocellulosic substrate, and fungi with a focus on the potential of such composite materials for implementation within the built environment. Outlined here are the processes and procedures essential to this multi-material fabrication framework, including a detailed account of a series of substrate material mixtures and printed clay scaffold geometries, both of which exhibit properties informed by the material synthesis and fabrication process. We foremost propose the strategic mixing of different substrate types to be 3D printed with clay as a strategy for probing the optimization of mycelial overgrowth and binding to the 3D printed geometries. Subsequently, we proceed in detailing the study’s approach and process of 3D printing the mixtures of recycled material, drying the geometry, and sterilizing the final design once inoculated with the mycelium. Ultimately, we motivate this research in pursuit of further understanding of mycelium's material and mycoremediation capacities in service of more environmentally responsive and responsible architectural applications.
