summary This paper began by architectural drawings’ study in the Middle Ages, among them, the drawings of the Villard de Honnecourt’s sketchbook, foreman of the thirteenth century. Through these drawings we could analyzed how the construction and design process of Gothic cathedrals was developed in the construction site. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties in the construction process by reading the drawings, as well as its own richness graphic. The project presents the redesign and the analysis of the Honnecourt and Gothic cathedrals as well as the execution of reduced physical models.

summary A 6 weeks (2 days a week) design exercise, making use of the above programs, was held the last bimester in the Faculty of Architecture in TH Delft. This exercise was an experimental one for the students, as well as for the teachers. As the exercise had an experimental character, it is clear that a lot should be learned from that experience, both from its positive and negative outcomes. The paper will try to evaluate on this point for the benefit of those intending to set up similar projects.

summary Cinemas have always communicated beyond space and time. However, the illusion of being in a synthetic environment in cinema seldom exists in an architectural animation. The same digital animation technology may have been used, but the method of engaging the viewers and capturing their interest in cinemas, distinguish them from architectural animations. The focus of this paper is to examine the essential elements in cinematography such as mies-en-scene, collage, and entourage which can effectively transform one animation style to another. Depending on the storytelling and use of cinematographic elements, the built environment can bring the sense of immersion that is, the thread of emotional connection between the audience and the animation. The topic explores ways to permit the viewer’s immersion in the presented environment for architectural animation. Transforming the style of the animation allows us to experiment with different ways of capturing audience attention, translating design concepts and articulating information rather than being another form of transcription only in motion. In this paper, the attempt is to bring the reflex of an architectural project in animation by introducing the cinematic depth rather than being a narrative knowledge transfer.

title An information engineering approach to modelling building design

summary This paper highlights potential problems in the construction industry concerning the large quantities of information produced and the lack of an adequate information structure within which to coordinate this information. The Information Engineering Method (IEM) and Information Engineering Facility (IEF) CASE tool are described and put forward as a means of establishing an information structure at a strategic level thus providing a framework for the implementation of lower level applications systems. The paper describes how the ICON (Integration/Information for Construction) project at Salford University is establishing and modelling the information requirements for the construction industry at the strategic level. The IEM and IEF are demonstrated using activity, data and interaction models with particular attention being paid to the function of building design within the broader context of design, procurement and the management of construction. Implications for future practice are also discussed.

summary Sustainable approaches in the choice of building components require attentive control of the building design and complex analyses of the behavior of chosen components and their ecological balance. One strategy to support sustainable approaches is the technique of integrated planing. Integrated planing comprises both, horizontal (interdisciplinary teams) and vertical (building life cycle oriented) integration. Its realization requires the ability to view a building under different aspects (e.g. views of domain experts) and at different stages over time (preliminary design, design, construction, operation, demolition). These different views can only be considered at once, if different approaches in various areas such as computer aided design (CAD), modeling (PDM), and cooperation (CORBA) are integrated into one working environment. Over the last decade, the Institut für Industrielle Bauproduktion (ifib), University of Karlsruhe, Germany and the Institut für Kernenergetik und Energiesysteme (IKE), University of Stuttgart (Germany), have investigated various tools and techniques, supporting the implementation of these approaches. Several research projects were subject to experiments in this context.

summary While new software interfaces are making the interaction between humans and robots more pedestrian, there is still an extremely complex workflow from the conception of data on the part of humans to the final action of the arm. In order to continue to promote and advance the use of these versatile tools in architecture, pedagogical strategies are needed to better enable users to engage with them quickly and obtain results while minimising frustration. This paper will outline a pedagogical strategy for introducing the multi-layered levels of knowledge and understanding required to operate a 6-axis robotic arm as developed in undergraduate architectural coursework. It will highlight the various learning modules created in order to deliver the necessary information for understanding the complex operational pipeline required to interact with and operate the robotic arm successfully.

This paper aims to validate a computer supported collaborative workspace that facilitates the participation, in an integrated approach, of the various members of a construction project team. The goal of the research is to be part of the evolution of work practices in design.

summary Biomimicry and bioinspiration in architecture have been around for several decades, however recent developments in algorithmic and generative design have introduced new morphogenetic design strategies and have paved the path for a cross-disciplinary research field that is currently developing under the umbrella term Digital Biomimicry. More specifically, in architectural education, biomimicry may act as a framework for algorithmic thinking, knowledge abstraction and implementation, and a source of inspiration towards performative design solutions. The paper presents a series of undergraduate and postgraduate studio curriculums that are part of a research agenda on biomimetic architecture, established at the Department of Architecture of the University of Thessaly. It discusses the pedagogical approach, the design methodology and showcases a series of research and design outcomes.

summary This paper discusses a theoretical approach and method of making in computational design and construction. The project examines digital and analogue building practices through a social anthropological and STS lens to better understand the use of technology in complex making environments. We position this with respect to contemporary investigations of materials in architecture which use physical and virtual prototyping and collaborative building. Our investigation extends this work by parsing complex making through ethnographic analysis. In doing so we seek to recalibrate computational design methods which privilege rote execution of digital form. This inquiry challenges ideas of agency and intention as ‘enabled’ by new technologies or materials. Rather, we investigate the troubling (as well as extension) of explicit designer intentions by the tacit intentions of technologies. Our approach is a trans-disciplinary investigation synthesizing architectural making and ethnographic analysis. We draw on humanistic and social science theories which examine activities of human-technology exchange and architectural practices of algorithmic design and fabrication. We investigate experimental design processes through prototyping architectural components and assemblies. These activities are examined by collecting data on human-technology interactions through field notes, journals, sketches, and video recordings. Our goal is to foster (and acknowledge) more complex, socially constructed methods of design and fabrication. This work in progress, using a cement composite fabric, is a preliminary study for a larger project looking at complex making in coordination with public engagement.

summary During the last decade the hype for digitally fabricated educational pavilions has become very popular among architecture schools. A survey with the aim to catalogue and classify educational pavilions revealed more than 120 cases of digitally fabricated pavilions within the last decade. The analysis of the sample of 120 Design-Build projects built during the period 2006-2016 revealed, apart from obvious similarities and differences, the prevailing trends relating to the materials and the technology used for the design, manufacturing and assembly. From the processing of the gathered data a set of typologies emerge, which relate both to morphological characteristics as well as to the design process. The paper concludes by discussing the advantages and critical points of this educational practice and the learning outcomes for both students and educators.

summary The twisted cubic curve has the attraction of combining both commonly used curve definitions, the conic section and the parametric cubic, in a single form. A definition of the twisted cubic is developed in terms of geometric `handles' convenient for CAD and independent of parametrization, analogous to a well-known definition of conics. Conditions for the occurrence of asymptotes are investigated and shown to be considerably more complex than those for conics. Several more controllable subsets of the general curve are described. The paper concludes that use of the full generality of the twisted cubic is in most cases unjustified

title Immersive VR for Scientific Visualization: A Progress Report

summary Immersive virtual reality (IVR) has the potential to be a powerful tool for the visualization of burgeoning scientific data sets and models. In this article we sketch a research agenda for the hardware and software technology underlying IVR for scientific visualization. In contrast to Brooks' excellent survey last year, which reported on the state of IVR and provided concrete examples of its production use, this article is somewhat speculative. We don't present solutions but rather a progress report, a hope, and a call to action, to help scientists cope with a major crisis that threatens to impede their progress.
