summary Architecture is a profession that requires collaboration among professionals from various fields. Despite the important nature of these interdisciplinary collaborations, architecture students rarely obtain the opportunity to learn about the work areas of other stakeholders and the practice of working together. In all sectors there is a growing need for professionals who possess in-depth knowledge in their own disciplines and also develop an understanding about other related disciplines. In a setting of a student project competition, this article examines how students from various AEC fields collaborate using BIM as a common data environment and emphasizes several considerations for implementing interdisciplinary collaborations in curriculums of architecture schools in students’ perspective.

summary In this paper, we present a workflow developed for designing with and scaling-up new materials in architecture through an iterative cycle of materialization and testing. The framework establishes a connection between design requirements and form, taking advantage of different scales in new materials known as micro, meso, and macroscale in the process of design/manufacture. Different scales when dealing with material systems-especially in those that possess some level of uncertainty in their behavior from the formation process-make it challenging to deal with the different material variables controlled at each scale. This paper presents a brief review of existing design workflows centered on material properties. We then discuss case studies and argue for a multi-scale approach for design. Finally, we present the workflow. By implementing the workflow on two case studies, we answer how we can include material scales and their embedded properties as the central part of the design/manufacture process to aid in implementing new materials in architecture. The case studies are a responsive skin system and a free-standing tensile structure incorporating 3D printed wood filament and knitted yarn as the primary material.

summary This paper presents an optimization-based calibration process for tuning a digital formfinding algorithm used with knitted textile materials in architectural tension structures. 3D scanning and computational optimization are employed to accurately approximate a physical model in a digital workflow that can be used to establish model settings for future exploration within a knit geometric typology. Several aspects of the process are investigated, including different optimization algorithms and various approaches to data extraction. The goal is to determine the appropriate optimization method and data extraction, as well as automate the process of adjusting formfinding settings related to the length of the meshes associated with the knitted textile behavior. The calibration process comprises three steps: extract data from a 3D scanned model; determine the bounds of formfinding settings; and define optimization variables, constraints, and objectives to run the optimization process. Knitted textiles made of natural yarns are organic materials and when used at the industrial level can satisfy DSG 9 factors to promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation in building construction through developing sustainable architectural systems. The main contributions of this paper are calibrated digital models of knitted materials and a comparison of the most effective algorithms and model settings, which are a starting point to apply this process to a wider range of knit geometries. These models enhance the implementation and further development of novel architectural knitted systems.

summary This study discusses the form-finding process of tensile structures and specially knitted tensioned structures. The performance of different plugins in Grasshopper is investigated for behavioral simulation of architectural knitted tensioned structures. Whereas multi-directionality and flexibility are the main characteristics of knitted textiles and allow these materials to be used to develop more complex architectural shapes, such characteristics also make digital simulation of knitted textiles more challenging. We explore the extent to which available tools can assist during the design process.

summary The research project, tetrahedron cloud, explores agent-based stochastic behavior as a design tool. It investigates the possibilities for producing volumetric tetrahedral meshes based on the interactions of individual stochastic agents. The research situates itself at the intersection of the visual arts, the physical sciences, and computer science. The basic interest in stochastics comes from the visual arts; the growth simulation approach is borrowed from the natural sciences; and the use of a tetrahedral mesh within C++ comes from computer science. But more generally, the project focuses on architecture’s ongoing engagement with stochastic systems. By embedding extremely specific tendencies within an agent’s behavior, while also allowing for stochastic variation, we can create larger systems that are both in and out of our “control”. This sidesteps the typical limitations of many computational geometry and parametric methods, where there is often an overly deterministic relationship between the input and output of a given system. Such a shift from optimization to behavior inevitably brings up troubling questions of style. Abandoning the search for a “best” solution, or even the articulation of the criteria for such a task, re-opens computational architecture at its deepest levels as a site for design speculation.

summary Many people believe that mathematical thought is an essential element of creativity. The origin of this idea in art dates back to Plato. Asserting that aesthetics is based on logical and mathematical rules, Plato had noticed that geometrical forms were “forms of beauty” in his late years. Unlike his contemporaries, he had stressed that the use of geometrical forms such as lines, circles, planes, cubes in a composition would aid to form an aesthetics. The rational forms of Plato and the rules of geometry have formed the basis of antique Greek art, sculpture and architecture and have influenced art and design throughout history in varying degrees. This emphasis on geometry has continued in modern design, reflected prominently by Kandinsky’s geometric classifications .

Mathematics and especially geometry have found increasing application in the computer-based design environment of our day. The computer has become the central tool in the modern design environment, replacing the brush, the paints, the pens and pencils of the artist. However, if the artist does not master the internal working of this new tool thoroughly, he can neither develop nor express his creativity. If the designer merely learns how to use a computer-based tool, he risks producing designs that appear to be created by a computer. From this perspective, many design schools have included computer courses, which teach not only the use of application programs but also programming to modify and create computer-based tools.

In the current academic educational structure, different techniques are used to show the interrelationship of design and programming to students. One of the best examples in this area is an application program that attempts to teach the programming logic to design students in a simple way. One of the earliest examples of such programs is the Topdown Programming Shell developed by Mitchell, Liggett and Tan in 1988 . The Topdown system is an educational CAD tool for architectural applications, where students program in Pascal to create architectural objects. Different examples of such educational programs have appeared since then. A recent fine example of these is the book and program called “Design by Number” by John Maeda . In that book, students are led to learn programming by coding in a simple programming language to create various graphical primitives.

However, visual programming is based largely on geometry and one cannot master the use of computer-based tools without a through understanding of the mathematical principles involved. Therefore, in a model for design education, computer-based application and creativity classes should be supported by "mathematics for design" courses. The definition of such a course and its application in the multimedia design program is the subject of this article.

summary Digital archives that use 3D CG models, for example, relating to historical architecture and archaeological sites, are now commonly created for a wide range of purposes. Unlike actually visiting historical architecture, access to digital archives and browsing of their content are computer-related. Thus, users cannot easily gain a deep understanding of the content and are less likely to truly enjoy it. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method to support collaborative experiencing of 3D digital archives related to historical architecture. To achieve this goal, we developed a prototype system for a 3D digital archive of historical architecture using VR technology. The system offers an interactive interface.

summary As information technology continues to evolve, it is affecting all creative art forms by providing new tools and surroundings, such as virtual environments. 3D real-time simulation environments strongly support communication and navigation, enabling users to collaborate on designs using centralized or distributed environments. The persons concerned must understand the proposed design. Systems that help them gain this understanding are therefore required. An effective concept for gaining understanding is comparison. However, comparing one design proposal with another using existing systems is difficult because the users must consider their viewpoints separately. In this paper, we describe the concepts, strategies, and functions of a 3D virtual design environment for collaborative, real-time architectural design that is based on our 3D comparative navigation system and real-time simulation technology. We also evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using this design environment to support collaborative architectural design.

title DESIGN EVALUATOR: CRITIQUING FREEHAND SKETCHES

summary This thesis concerns about how feedback integrates into a sketch design system. Design Feedback as critiques can help the designer better envisage what a design will be like in advance, allowing the designer to avoid certain kinds of errors. This thesis discusses how a freehand sketch critiquing system can be developed and how this tool can support in the architectural design process as design tool. The thesis proposes a working prototype, Design Evaluator to demonstrate the potential of this knowledge-based design system. The Design Evaluator system has the design knowledge translated into rules related to four architectural spatial issues: proper room sequence, adjacency, room placement, and minimum area. The Design Evaluator interprets the designer's architectural diagram and recognizes the spatial relations such as circulation paths and room placements. It checks the architectural diagram with the built-in rules. When a rule violation occurs, the system displays the design critiques in three ways: text messages, annotated drawings, and texture-mapped 3D visualization. These critiques stimulate the designer's "reflection-in-action" cycle during the sketching of her/his design ideas. Moreover, they help the designer to detect errors in the early design stage.

summary A computer-based design critiquing system analyzes a proposed solution and offers critiques (Robbins 1998). Critiques help designers identify problems as well as opportunities to improve their designs. Compared with human critics, today’s computer-based critiquing systems deliver feedback in quite restricted manner. Most systems provide only negative evaluations in text; whereas studio teachers critique by interpreting the student’s design, introducing new ideas, demonstrating and giving examples, and offering evaluations (Bailey 2004; Uluoglu 2000) using speech, writing, and drawing to communicate (Anthony 1991; Schön 1983). This article presents a computer-based critiquing system, Flat-pack Furniture Design Critic (FFDC). This system supports multiple delivery types and modalities, adapting the typical system architecture of constraint-based intelligent tutors (Mitrovic et al. 2007).

summary This study raises the question of what the emotional significance of the digital patterns has and attempts to provide an answer to such a question. The purpose of this study is to propose a direction to effectively support the façade designs of buildings by understanding the emotive design characteristics of the patterns. This study explains the design patterns on façade designs. There are five types of digital patterns which include applied patterns, perforated patterns, layered patterns, cast patterns, and tiled patterns. Among those patterns, perforated patterns are focused in further detail. This study deals with identifying emotional effects of perforated design patterns. The emotional word ‘asymmetrical’ and ‘irregular’ shows the high average of the emotional value. In the bipolar adjectives, the high emotional value is ‘irregular-regular’ and ‘asymmetrical-symmetrical’. Therefore, the final design characteristics of the perforated patterns are ‘regularity’ and ‘symmetry’. This means to be able to use the perforated patterns in order to be perceived a building façade design as the regular and symmetrical emotional effect. In this paper, it is worth analyzing design characteristics of a building façade by the support of the digital technologies and discussing the utilization of design characteristics derived. This study has contributed to the process and method of deriving the analysis results.

summary As a tool to support collaboration in community-based planning for disaster mitigation in Japanese old wooden built-up areas, we attempt to develop a fire spreading simulation model incorporated a fire fighting activity using Cellular Automata (CA). The proposed model can deal with the process of fire spreading in a building that traditional models can not represent. Whether or not fire can spread is based on a stochastic calculation process to reproduce uncertain fire spreading. The errors caused by the stochastic factor are analyzed by carrying out simulation two or more times under the same condition. Moreover, the reproductivity of the model is examined by comparing simulation results with actual fire records.

summary Municipal governments or developers make design guidelines to create harmonious streetscapes in new towns. The regulations, however, are often based on arbitrary decisions without any empirical research. The present study employed a visual simulation system to test the effects of such physical features of the buildings as color, height, flatness of the building façade and its recess from the street on pedestrians’ impressions of the place. Thirty subjects were asked to rate their impressions of “order”, “simple”, and to evaluate the atmosphere after experiencing the simulated scenes. The results revealed some relations between the physical features and the pedestrians’ responses.

summary The results of the experimental study revealed that the impacts from the building design and their layout differ according to observation mode of the pedestrian. This may imply that the regulation of building elements should not be considered in a rigid way but in more flexible according to given situation. Establishment of more reasonable and reliable design guideline that takes the observation mode into account should contribute to renew a part of a traditional neighbourhood smoothly while preserving original streetscape that people can feel usable and comfortable atmosphere.

summary In this study, we propose a novel computational system called WoodWeaver for fabricating curved surfaces from conventional materials without using moulds. We use a cutting-based material bending method called Dukta. Our system enables a user to design a single free-form curved surface and to fabricate it based on the bending deformation characteristics of the material. The system also indicates an invalid shape; that is, one that will break upon bending deformation. The user can then design a valid shape with this information. We also develop an optimal Dukta pattern that is the smallest-sized gap pattern necessary to represent a user-designed shape. Given a valid shape, the system generates the optimal pattern and a machine cuts four modules with this pattern. Finally, the user assembles these modules to obtain the desired shape.

summary This paper proposes a computational landscape design method, called the seeds scattering system (SS system), which enables us to manage various environmental parameters in design processes, to create the ‘natural forest’ in urban environments. First, this paper discusses the drawbacks of the conventional methods for landscape design. Second, the paper outlines the components of the SS system together with the design process of the SONY forest project in Tokyo, and shows its advantages, including broad applicability to conceptual design, and capability of environmental simulations and spatial optimizations. Last, the paper summarizes the effectiveness of the SS system. By managing fundamental rules behind geometries in forest growth processes, the SS system showed us capability for constructing interactive relationships between design and their surrounding environments to produce design inherent in its site.

summary The need for architects to develop their own computational tools is becoming increasingly evident. In this paper, we introduced our design tool named ‘UVN generator’ which is based on the algorithmic process combining scripting potentiality and flexibility of traditional 3D surface modeling. Our attempt on combining the two served us well to explore the new ground for design. New conditions were explored and observed in the three case studies which are named ‘on a surface’, ‘between surfaces’ and ‘on a new ordered surface’, referring to place where the scripts were run. In design projects presented in our case studies, we focus on the system behind the generation of complex, expressive, biomimetic, yet humanistic shape. This challenge to find a new ground for computational design enables us to pose our critical question ‘What could be algorithmic design potential may lay beyond basic surfaces?’

summary The digital reconstruction of existing cities using virtual reality techniques is being increasingly used. For consultants, municipalities and planning departments these models provide decision support through visual simulations (El Araby, 2001). For academia they provide a new tool for teaching students urban design and planning (Okeil, 2001). For authorities they provide a tool for promoting the city on the world wide web trying to attract more businesses and tourists to it. The built environment is very rich in detail. It does not only consist of open spaces surrounded by abstract buildings but it also includes many smaller objects such as street furniture, traffic signs, street lights, different types of vegetation and shop signs for example. All surfaces in the built environment have unique properties describing color, texture and opacity. The built environmentis dynamic and our perception is affected by factors such as pedestrian movement, traffic, environmental factors such as wind, noise and shadows. The built environment is also shaped by the accumulation of changes caused by many influences through time. All these factors make the reconstruction of the built environment a very complex task. This paper tries to answer the question: how realistic the reconstructed models of urban areas can be. It sees “Realism“ as a variable floating between three types of realties. The reality of the physical environment which we are trying to represent. The reality of the digital environment which will host the digitally reconstructed city. And the reality of the working environment which deals with the problem of limitation of resources needed to digitally reconstruct the city. A case study of building a 3D computer model of an urban area in the United Arab Emirates demonstrates that new time-saving techniques for data acquisition can enhance realism by meetingbudget limitations and time limitations.
