summary This paper discusses computational support for the maintenance of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems to more effectively use maintenance information. A common cause of inefficient and ineffective maintenance has been the difficulty in getting reliable, just-in-time information for in-situ maintenance work. To reduce this inefficiency in the maintenance environment, accessibility and accuracy of maintenance information must be improved. Our approach, therefore, is the development of a user interface that will produce superimposed computer graphics of equipment/facility-specific maintenance information onto a live video stream on portable computing devices, such as laptops and PDAs. This paper concentrates on elicitation of primary functions needed to support various maintenance activities as well as a prototype application being developed for the approach.

summary With the public's high consciousness of townscape, a new form of Color Planning incorporating Citizen Participation is necessary. This paper proposes the use of Dynamic Hypertext Mark-up Language (DHTML) in a Web-oriented Interactive Townscape Assessment System. This system consists of two parts, the first part includes tools for Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP), Magnitude Estimation, Semantic Differential (SD) and Color Semantic Differential (Color SD) method, and the second part includes tools for Interactive Color Planning System (ICPS). Interactive Assessment is possible by the inclusion of JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS). Efficiency is improved by client-side operations, data-collection using Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and presentation using Tabular Data Control (TDC). A case study of large-scale resort facility in Aso Region, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan is undertaken. The result shows efficiency of the system.

summary Design computing is an interdisciplinary field that centers on the intersection of design, computer science, and cognitive science. These multi-dimensional faces of this new paradigm necessitate a mutual understanding of computing and design as a whole, which are usually conceived as separate stages of computer-mediated design. This paper explores the use of multiple representations in stimulative design computing learning and teaching environment. This paper starts with an overview of computer-mediated collaborative learning, multiple representations and learner-centered design. Then issues related to the methodology in implementing the system are discussed. Agent models and prototype of the above computer-mediated collaborative learning system are constructed. The research is under progress.

summary Design Computing is an interdisciplinary field that centres on the intersection of design, computer science and linguistics. This multidimensional face of the new paradigm of design computing necessitates a mutual understanding of computing and designs as a whole, which are usually, conceived as separated stages of computed-mediated design. Based on cognitive and computational approach, with the integration of scaffolding strategies and multiple representations, an interactive and real-time design computing learning system is constructed. By interactively manipulating the various attributes, codes, parameters and digital media contents in a distributed system, learners are gradually exposed to the mutual relationship of representational digital multimedia and the underlining programming syntax in a collaborative environment. The author attempted the use of game programming technology in the development of the above system to support design learning and research in understanding design activities. The aim is to identify the design process that if taught well would address the core goals of design education.

summary The rapid growth of complex contemporary architecture design, contributed by the advance in parametric CAD/CAM software, is accompanied by challenges in the production process; it demands both highly trained workers and technical equipments. This paper reviews current technologies in robotics-aided construction and wearable computers for generic purposes, and proposes the design of a robotic device for construction guidance. It guides the user, the worker, through the assembly process of precision modular constructions, by providing procedural mechanical or haptic assistance in the 3-dimensional positioning of building components. The device is designed to be wearable, portable, and operable as a completely stand-alone system that requires no external infrastructure. A prototype of the device is tested with a mock-up masonry construction experiment, the result of which is reported in this paper, along with discussion for future improvement and application opportunities within the context of highly developed, condensed Japanese urban environments. A greater objective of this paper is to bridge current studies in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and digital fabrication in architecture and promote the potentials of human workers in future construction scenes.

title Graphic Data Comprehension In Design Thinking

summary There exist several kinds of data qualities when we see a graphic. In such a procedure, we rarely describe all the qualities by language. This is an interesting phenomenon. We are doing something that we understand but we cannot tell when we are thinking or drawing a graphic. A problem like this touches the central point related to the understanding of drawing in design. It is the purpose of this study. A series of experiments is conducted to compare two sets of data: design by drawing and design without drawing. The major result of this experiment is that the type without drawing contains less design contents and is easy to reassemble. The drawing type contains much richer design contents which easily disappeared when reassembled through the descriptions. We believe there exist two major characters of visual data: nameable and unnameable. Nameable data may be designed and communicated without drawing. For the unnameable one, we may proceed when its qualities show out. According to this study, we conclude that the mental representation of visual data is basically prepositional rather than picture-like. But, in design procedures, the picture-like one may appear when the figure comes out of the mental world, with lots of unnameable qualities.

summary This paper presents a rule-based mechanism for mediating design processes in a web-based collaborative environment. This mechanism is developed based on a logical description of flexible declarative inter-dependency relationships between collaborative design activities. We address design coordination problems by focusing on overlapping problem solving within dynamic workflow. A system prototype is presented to demonstrate our approach. This prototype is part of "DECADE", a long-term project to develop the needed technologies supporting design collaboration.

summary Throughout the history of architectural discourse the concept of metabolic function in a building and a buildings relationship to its creators is expressed by keen designers who understand the subtle linkage. Organistic homeostasis is a biological function found in all mammals including humans. The interior generation of heat classifies man as endothermic. Endothermic heat generation allows for a very controlled equilibrium and is a characteristic of more complex organisms. The body has produced highly evolved surface systems to help efficiently manage the flow of heat energy in and out of the body. I suggest building envelopes represent the human being projecting itself outwards in a prosthetic extension of the skin. Inherent in this projection are the same demands of envelope put forth in the body. In my research of anatomy I have found one system that has evolved to help facilitate endothermic heat regulation in mammals at the skin level, which is hair. How does hair transcribe into architecture? An analysis into the function of hair and its adaptable morphologies is studied. Hair is a thermal regulating system, its building equivalent are forms of thermal insulation and radiant barriers. Hairs goal is homeostatic equilibrium which has its architectural counterpoint known as the balance point. Hair is an adjustable system that mitigates between internal and external heat loading which is the goal of a building envelope. In conclusion the paper explores these issues and more in new building systems and design tactics that originate from the function of hair.

summary Automated design rule checking (RDC) in Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be challenging especially when dealing with qualitative aspects and intricate regulations like building circulation. The study proposes a novel method for Regulatory Design Rule Checking (RDRC) for building circulation, addressing challenges in translating regulations to computational constructs and extracting relevant information from complex BIM models. Through a tiered compliance assessment, the investigation considers preventive rule-based checks for doors and corridors and explores constraint-based regulatory incentive schemes such as through-block pedestrian links (TBPL). The RDRC analysis identifies non-compliance and concludes with a recommendation for potential adjustments. This work aims to benefit designers and regulators, providing productivity enhancements and a deeper understanding of regulatory intricacies in the context of building circulation.

summary Given a subdivision of the plane induced by a planar graph with n vertices, in this paper the problem of identifying which region of the subdivision contains a given test points is considered. A search algorithm, called point-location algorithm, which operates on a suitably preprocessed data structure is presented. The search runs in time at most O((log n)2), while the preprocessing task runs in time at most O(n log n) and requires O(n) storage. The methods are quite general, since an arbitrary subdivision can be transformed in time at most O(n log n) into one to which the preprocessing procedure is applicable. This solution of the point location problem yields interesting and efficient solutions of other geometric problems, such as spatial convex inclusion and inclusion in an arbitrary polygon

summary This paper presents a surface manipulation tool that can transform any arrangement of folding planar surfaces without the need to custom program for each instance. Origami offers a finite set of paper-folding techniques that can be cataloged and tested with parametric modeling software. For this work, Rhinoceros and Grasshopper have been chosen as a software platform to generate a parametric folding tool focusing on single surface folding, particularly where surfaces can transform from one configuration to another while retaining their planarity.

summary We describe the design and implementation of a prototype computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) environment for review of architectural construction documents. This environment utilizes a novel plain-paper tangible interface that supports shared activity such as review of construction documents using an “over the shoulder” computational assistant called CAPRI.Despite the increasing use of computers, work in most architecture firms still largely revolves around paper drawings. Architects structure their work around paper instead of digital representations for reasons of legal liability and tradition, as well as technical limitations. While hardcopy is intuitive, dense, and easy to access, it lacks direct connection to the wide range of design knowledge increasingly available in interactive design environments. This lack is felt most acutely during design review processes, when the designer or reviewer is often called upon to consult and consider holistically a variety of supporting (backing) documents, a task which requires focused attention and a good memory, if errors are to be avoided.Our prototype system enables multiple reviewers to interact equally with a paper construction document using a tangible interface to query detail and backing data from a project knowledge base. We believe this will decrease the reviewer’s cognitive load by bringing design data to them in a contextual and timely way. In doing so, we believe errors will be caught sooner and mistakes reduced.

summary The existing historic city attracts the attention of architects and educators for its architectural value and history. In addition, many researches on visualisation of historic sites such as world heritage sites are in progress in order to represent the importance of preservation and restoration. New Lanark is the best-preserved example of a cotton-spinning village from the early period of Britain’s industrialisation, and is of international significance in terms of economic, architectural and social history. The village has also been nominated for inclusion in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. This paper aims to describe development procedure of virtual historic village of New Lanark for educating people about its significant social history and a unique type of building. A multimedia environment is useful for this purpose considering dynamic links among different kinds of resources such as text, images, 3D models and animations. Through this environment people can access from where they are to virtual heritage and navigate 3D space by animation with virtual guidance.

summary The evaluation of design alternatives is an important phase for supporting design decision and for producing new design concepts, and it is repeatedly processed. To proceed with the design process in standard, the repetition is reduced to minimum, and design must be optimized in limited cost and time. For smooth and fast process, lots of design alternatives are provided within the limit of possibility and they must be evaluated appropriately. It's possible to evaluate design alternatives using various media. This paper describes the characteristics of various media that have been used for evaluation of design alternatives, and propose the evaluation system for design alternatives based on the findings of case studies.
