summary This project is aimed at developing an instrument to reach the city-net multidimensionality (flux /real-space) of Rosario city in Argentina. Both, an integral view and the view of the different information layers of the urban net are required. We decided the used of computers to determine a digital dynamic model. The tool proposed has to be useful not only in search and urban survey but also as a design instrument, to pre-view the urban interventions. Simultaneously this tool is needed to evaluate the urban project’s impact in the city through the passing time as well as to communicate future projects to government and to community all.

summary Generative design's future impact on architectural processes relies on its successful integration into the established workflow of architects, as prior experiences indicate that technological innovations struggle when not aligned with existing work cultures. This study examines how architects respond to the challenge of practicing generative design, using the genetic algorithm technique, and focusing on the form-finding process, to achieve optimal design outcomes. The researcher set up an experimental research design involving eight professional architects, whose task is to develop an architectural schematic design based on a given set of algorithms. The interaction between architects and computers as supporting tools during the design process is documented to measure the priority level of given algorithms and time budgeting for every design step. Cognitive reflections of architects are recorded during the experiment, followed by interviews to gather additional insights into their experiences in generative design processes. The findings of this research will provide some insights into the advantages and disadvantages of generative design as an alternative approach to architectural design and the best way to integrate generative design seamlessly into prevailing architects' work culture.

summary This research project proposed to create spatial and communal qualities of Group Form architecture via a web-based user participation design method. The proposed method allows multiple users to simultaneously design houses on the same site, encouraging spatio-temporal negotiation as users interact and collaborate with one another. In order to assess the feasibility of this approach, a prototype of a web-based Group Form design tool was implemented using the Processing environment. An experiment using the web-based tool was conducted with the objective of exploring the actual user behaviour.

summary Cement and concrete production are responsible for nearly 8% of the world's annual emissions of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Biodesign can potentially address this challenge in architecture by integrating living materials in design processes and enhancing the ecological performance of materials. As part of an interdisciplinary approach between architecture and microbiology, this research outlines a systematic workflow consisting of pre-fabrication, fabrication, and post-fabrication phases. The workflow leverages additive processes based on biological data and utilizes cyanobacteria’s output capabilities towards architectural production. Cyanobacteria through their photosynthetic process are able to absorb CO2 and induce calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation, the main ingredient in limestone and cement. This paper focuses on the pre-fabrication phase and develops material protocols for designers. It examines the compatibility of two bacterial strains in order to formulate a biomixture suitable for integration in an additive biomanufacturing process.

This development has produced such a phenomenon that surpassed all expectations. Through the game “engine” tools, virtual spaces can be achieved according to an editor’s criterium. Thus, a varied range of uses in different research fields are permitted. It is possible to build architectural simulations with high degree of realism an interactivity by means of ‘levels editors’ found in most of this games.

summary In today’s global, multi-faceted society, architectural design has become a collaborative effort. Often, however, team members are separated by distance and difference in work hours. In order to keep team members connected, research groups have been developing groupware for communication and data sharing using information and communication technology. The results of recent research indicate that the systems developed are useful especially in the early phases of the architectural design process. While these systems cannot support the most important process in design collaboration— the decision making itself—they will enable team members to communicate effectively. The goal of this research is to develop a decision support groupware for the design team. As the first step, in order to enhance interaction among team members, we developed a web-based asynchronous design discussion tool named DesIBo: Design Interaction Board, such as Bulletin Board System. This paper deals with the development of DesIBo employing new concepts about entering and browsing comments and evaluating that system. In the future, we will add a decision-support function to DesIBo.

summary This paper describes the development of a workflow for the production of a net zero off-grid research cabin.  The workflow deploys a number of affiliated parametric software packages as a form finding tool for the exterior envelope of this structure, with a focus on passive solar design as a generative formal driver. The design was required to incorporate the spatial and programmatic needs of the users in a compact, barrier free, net zero building. Simultaneously, the research question asked the designers to harness the potential of digital design in the consideration of future fabrication techniques, in order to optimize the building’s performance and the speed and quality of assembly once the project moves into construction. Parameters considered include solar exposure, external surface area, cost, fabrication, functionality, and aesthetic criteria. This project was developed by a multidisciplinary team of graduate students at the University of Calgary.

summary The Olympus Optical Company of Japan was formed in 1919, with the introduction of the first generation single lens reflects camera, and soon after with the first microscope. Since that time, the organisation has developed and is now split into three main divisions: manufacturing and supplying cameras, microscopes and endoscopes. Other smaller specialist divisions exist suppling such products as dictaphones. Perhaps, rather surprisingly, the endoscope division is the largest part of the organisation. Through a world-wide organisation of four main business centers, Olympus Industrial, the name given to the industrial endoscope division, provides service and support to its customers. Each of the main business centers operates through agents and distributors. There are many different industries which gain the benefits of saved time and money provided by using endoscopes. To meet the needs of so many varied industries, there is a need to have a wide range of equipment. This includes light sources, to provide illumination, rigid borescopes, flexible fiberscopes, if views around corners are needed, and the new technology videoscopes. These instruments use the latest CCD technology with a small chip situated in the distal end of the scope, instead of fiberoptic image bundles used in fiberscopes.

A recent approach is the use of dynamic analysis to compute the movement of a human figure, given the forces and torques operating within and upon the body. One of the problems with this technique is computing the forces and torques required for particular motions: this has been called the control problem of dynamic analysis. To develop a better understanding of this problem, an interactive interface to a dynamics package has been produced. This interface, along with a collection of low-level motion processes, can be used to control the motion of a human figure model. This article describes both the user interface and the motion processes, along with experiences with this approach

summary Virtual reality provides a heightened sense of immersion and spatial awareness that provides a unique opportunity for designers to perceive and evaluate scale and space. At the same time, traditional sketches and small-size physical models provide tactile feedback that allow designers to create, comprehend, and explore complex geometric relationships. Through the development of vSpline, a modeling application for virtual reality, we explore the potential for design within a virtual spatial environment to blur the boundaries between digital and physical stages of design, and seek to combine the best of both virtual and analog worlds. By using spline-based closed meshes created directly in three-dimensional space, our software provides the capabilities to design, modify, and save the information in the virtual world and seamlessly convert the data to evaluate the printing of 3D physical models. We identify and discuss important questions that arise regarding relationships of perception of scale, digital-to-physical domains, and new methods of input and manipulation within a 3D immersive space.

summary The main objective of this research is to develop a method that can integrate responsive and interactive architecture through the application of soft robotics on a façade. To achieve this objective, a review of the main concepts, adaptive architecture (responsive-interactive) and soft robotics was first carried out. Secondly, recent studies and research that speak of the application of soft robotics in architecture are analyzed. With the knowledge acquired in the analyzes and reference studies, together with the help of programming and computational design tools, a scalable physical prototype was developed that manages to integrate both types of adaptive behaviors (responsive-interactive) in a single hybrid robotic system (soft-rigid), demonstrating the potential of soft robotics in architecture, in this case being applied to be sensitive and act on changes in temperature produced by solar radiation.

summary Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS), which have emerged with mass customization in the industry, allow the tool or system parameters to be adjusted in a controlled manner to produce customized products. Although the reconfigurable manufacturing systems have been applied in building and construction for waste, time, and cost reduction in producing specific mold forms at a prototype level, their utilization in additive manufacturing (extrusion) has not been explored. This paper presents, initial steps of ongoing research on the development of reconfigurable tools and workflow by transforming the tool's rigid parts with controlled parametric movable parts. The clay extruder tool used in crafts is transformed into a reconfigurable extruder tool that allows making customized forms. In the experimental setup, die combinations and tool head rotations are examined with the proposed Extrusion-based Making Grammar (EbMG). Produced forms illustrate the variations of the design space in relation to the rule sets. Here, a rule-based approach is found to be efficient for controlling the making parameters. This study explored the potentials of transforming a rigid craft tool into a customizable tool that allow the generation of product variation. It presents the preliminary stage of transforming craft tools into further digital craft tools.

summary Polymorphism, the ability of a substance to exist as multiple, different, crystalline solids is a subject of much interest in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy and crystallography. In some cases, polymorphs can be found to interconvert, usually in response to changes in the physical environment such as changes in temperature or pressure. The ability of structures composed of identical building blocks to interconvert is relevant to the field of architecture where architectural artefacts may require to respond to transient demands. Here we describe the phenomenon of polymorphism and the relevance to the architectural field, together with the development of a bespoke software plugin to allow polymorphic crystal structures to be used in design.

summary Even though inspired by cinema, architecture animations often oversimplify filmic space, and conflate two distinct concepts: gaze, and vision. Such misinterpretation leads to overuse camera movement to present spaces as if the change of point of view would lead to communicate lived space. This article introduces such discussion in the context of the tableau vivant, a living picture, explores the use of the shot sequence and the use of non-narrative scenes.

summary The development of computer programs has brought about a new trend for architects and designers. Topology, splines, nurbs and the use of sophisticated computer programs, which were formerly possible only to be executed on powerful computers, have triggered an interest in architects. Ten years ago, computers started to replace traditional drawing tools. Nowadays it is possible to develop the whole architectural process in three dimensions (project and manufacturing), reaching certain proposals that otherwise would be impossible or very tedious and time-consuming to carry out. Information technology proposes a new architectonic language, already experimented in a virtual way, but one that can be made real by means of the computer numeric control. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary Online communities use a “wall” as a place to articulate non - synchronic communication among its members. Such a place, however, poorly explores the metaphor of the wall as a means of enhancing online experiences. Online “walls” do not explore or challenge the richness of a real wall, and they do not embrace new experiences that are only possible in the digital world. In order to tackle these issues, this paper analyzes three movie scenes where the everyday perception of the wall is altered by madness and estrangement. Finally, the paper suggests how these perceptions of the wall could be integrated into interfaces using touch screen technologies.

summary A shape grammar formalism is elaborated for the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstaette) designer Josef Hoffmann’s two designs. Early instances of abstract expressionism are traced in Hoffman’s works by investigating stylistic parallels through shape rules and computations. The analysis of Hoffmann’s two works are carried out in parallel to Terry Knight’s analysis of De Stijl artists Georges Vantongerloo and Fritz Glarner paintings with the normal form grammars.
