summary This paper proposes a new interactive design method, called the networked coding method (NC method), which can manage computational design, multi-objective optimization and digital timber fabrication in an interactive design process. First, this paper discusses several drawbacks of the conventional method for architectural design. Second, the paper describes the facilities and equipment of the fabrication laboratory where the NC method was developed. Third, the paper outlines the components of the NC method together with the design process of architectural elements, called integrated fabric 2011. Finally, the paper summarizes several advantages of the method, including the production of an architectural element called the integrated-fabric that integrates various functions into one single element. The method is shown to handle any datasets, including structural and environmental analysis, which were otherwise difficult to integrate into conventional design processes.

summary Computer dependent design space is illustrated with the recent international competition project for Kowloon Arts Center. The spatial condition of design resulted from the deployment of Euclidian geometry and use of the non-rational, complex surfaces. Another aspect of computer dependent space was rooted in the contemporary work situation where architects located on the three different continents collaborated in distributed mode over the internet. The resulting project confirms the creative potential of the above aspects of the digital space in contemporary design.

For Open Building, it is important to preserve the diversity of feasible floor plans in order to adapt to various lifestyles of residents. Capacity analysis is a method for evaluating the potential diversity. We propose a novel method that evaluates the potential diversity of floor plans by enumerating all feasible floor plans satisfying given constraints based on zero-suppressed binary decision diagram (ZDD) (Minato, 1993).

summary Starting in 2001 a group of faculty at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning undertook a three year effort to integrate introductory studio with introductory computer-aided design. Each year 160 incoming sophomores begin their first design studio. They also receive a laptop computer and begin concurrent enrollment in an introductory computer course entitled Virtual Modeling. Students participate in studio projects, computer assignments, hand drawing tutorials, computer tutorials, studio course lectures and computer course lectures. This takes the dedicated effort of four faculty members and five graduate teaching assistants. The goals of this paper are 1) to describe the evolution of this large-scale integration effort, 2) to identify key success factors, and 3) to describe the impact on our students’ beginning design education. The paper provides a balanced perspective by discussing both benefits and challenges. It begins with more concrete information and moves gradually into deeper issues.

summary Rendering engines produce ever higher degrees of photorealism, and the process of image-making becomes increasingly automated. Architects benefit from this, but they also pay a price. They exchange local control at the tip of a pencil for global control through a list of variables. They exchange the incremental build-up of line and tone for the fast calculation of summative snapshots. This paper argues that the loss of local and incremental image control necessarily leads to an erosion of visual literacy. Lacking this control, students do not practice the close scrutiny needed to develop a critical eye. To combat this, students should be taught to combine the local and the global, the incremental and the summative. A series of teaching exercises are presented that seek a better balance between automation and human influence. Rather than resisting the digital medium, the exercises explore methods of teaching visual scrutiny within the digital medium. Students learn to see the flaws in computer-generated images, and they correct the flaws with local and incremental changes. Armed with the principle of the constructed image, students regain some control of the image-making process and use it to expressive ends, but an adjusted pedagogy is not sufficient. As long as software engineers prefer to make tools that automate human effort rather than augment it, architects will lack vital image control. The concept of the constructed image is needed not only to teach visual literacy in the digital age, but to focus the fight for more appropriate tools.

summary This plywood cladding project explores the tension between material fabrication and parametric control. Student Dan Hesketh performed experiments to discover latent properties of plywood, which were then used to drive the design. The introduction of parametric modeling complicated the effort, however, raising issues of Digital Exchange. On one hand, parametric control empowered the student to explore a wider range of geometries. On the other hand, by doing so, awareness of materiality was curtailed.

summary An argument is presented for respecting the student’s process of inductive reasoning in introductory digital modeling instruction. The inductive education methods of Montessori and VanDamme are reviewed, and relevant portions are applied to the problem of digital modeling instruction. Two primary concerns are presented: 1) the need to systematically reorient the student from the physical world to the digital world and 2) the need to sequence the presentation of introductory concepts according to logical dependencies inherent in these concepts. Five principles of inductive digital modeling instruction are established, which could act as the basis for a teaching method that reduces alienation among apprehensive students, eases the transition from traditional media for veteran designers, and speeds comprehension of core concepts of digital making.

summary The ongoing increase in the population sizes of urban dwellers around the globe translates into dense and crowded neighborhoods that may negatively impact residents’ well-being. This research study presents a novel process for creating, evaluating, and filtering a range of suitable urban planning alternatives at the neighborhood scale, using generative tools and computerized analytical tools. This innovative model enables the proposal of a range of planning alternatives during the initial planning stages when changes can be made simply and without incurring unnecessary costs. Generative approaches that find optimal solutions tend to process that resemble the “black box”. This can Couse the designer to feel a lack of involvement in the process. Therefore, the suggested method emphasizes interactions between the designer and computerized tools, providing an applicable algorithm that supports the designer in the decision-making process.

summary Wayfinding is the cognitive process of determining and following a path from one location to another. During navigation, a route-learning process occurs in which individuals encode spatial information. Older populations and individuals with cognitive difficulties face challenges in spatial learning and navigating complex environments. This study builds on Merhav and Fisher-Gewirtzman (2023), which suggests that star-shaped pedestrian paths, containing a distinct center through which all paths pass between origins and destinations, improve spatial memory and learning abilities for wayfinding compared to grid networks, benefiting all age groups. The research aims to bridge the gap in the analysis of pedestrian network topological shapes by developing a quantitative analytical model to evaluate how close each network is to a grid-type or a star-type and potentially transform these networks, from a grid-type into star-type topology. The proposed model suggests a methodology for assessing and modifying network topologies through spatial manipulations. The model utilizes a combination of open-source components (such as Space Syntax axial analysis and the Galapagos optimization plugin) and combines novel computational tools (python code) to rank nodes in the network and identify networks where isolated areas were created during the optimization process.

summary Principal stress lines, which are pairs of orthogonal curves that indicate trajectories of internal forces and therefore idealized paths of material continuity, naturally encode the optimal topology for any structure for a given set of boundary conditions. Although stress line analysis has the potential to offer a direct, and geometrically-provocative approach to optimization that can synthesize both design and structural objectives, its application in design has generally been limited due to the lack of standardization and parameterization of the process for generating and interpreting stress lines. Addressing these barriers that limit the application of the stress line methods, this paper proposes a new implementation framework that will enable designers to take advantage of stress line analysis to inform conceptual structural design. Central to the premise of the research proposal is a new conception of structurally-inspired design exploration that does not impose a singular solution, but instead allows for the exploration of a diverse high-performance design space in order to balance the combination of structural and architectural design objectives.

summary The e4d design series is looking for an innovative use of digital technology in architectural education to overcome the gap between design development and the acquisition of digital skills. Digital design approaches include multimedia technology, the crossover of analogue and digital techniques, rapid-prototyping, visualization, and the presentation in artistic movies. Over the past two years a problem- based design approach was developed, which enabled students to learn digital and architectural skills simultaneously and efficiently. The educational concept consisted generally of four steps, which, though independent of each other, are determined by questions of the ongoing design process. The first step consists of an abstract or subjective research phase; in the second step the findings are transferred into dynamic spatial structures. Later, the detected qualities are used to develop a given building program. Finally, the different traces are connected, when site-specific parameters are blended with the design traces. This paper examines and evaluates textual and visual design approaches, the precise use of different kinds of media for the projects’ visualization, and the way architectural projects can be discussed; in addition, a competent monitoring of the process and outcome of innovative and efficient design strategies in architectural and pedagogical aspect is included.

summary Non-Standard elements in architecture bear the promise of a more suitable and sustainable solutions. A new understanding of design evolves, which is focusing on relational and evolutionary approaches. Parametric design tools and computer controlled production facilitate the emerging complex spatial constructions, as they are able to imply and feedback knowledge. Whereas the story of non-standard elements and mass customization is quickly told the actual facilitation of these techniques bears a lot of unresolved questions. We undertook a design based research taking in the whole process of digital design to production of complex shaped geometry. In close cooperation with wood construction software- and machine industry we fabricated a 1:1 demonstrator show casing the potential of digital wood fabrication.

summary The hierarchical organization of information is dominant in the setup of tectonic structures. In order to overcome the inherent limitations of these systems, self-organization is proposed as a means for future design. The paper exemplifies this within the research project “Lamel la Flock”. The research takes its point of departure in the structural abilities of the wooden Zollinger system: a traditional structural lamella system distributed as a woven pattern of interconnected beams. Where the original system has a very limited set of achievable geometries our research introduces an understanding of beam elements as autonomous entities with sensorymotor behaviour. By this means freeform structures can be achieved Through computation and methods of self-organization, the project investigates how to design and build with a system based on multiple and circular dependencies. Hereby the agent system negotiates between design intent, tectonic needs, and production. The project demonstrates how real-time interactive modeling can be hybridized with agent–based design strategies and how this environment can be linked to physical production. The use of knowledge embedded into the system as well as the flow of information between dynamic processes, Finite Element Calculation and machinery was key for linking the speculative with the physical.

summary The research-based installation, The Rise, is led by the concept of a growing architecture able to sense and dynamically adapt to its environment as it grows into form while continuously reacting to its own material performance and behavioural constraints. This process is enabled through the careful integration of digital simulation techniques with multi-hierarchical generative design approaches. Aggregations of variably sized bundles of rattan core multiply, bend, branch and recombine into a distributed assembly that manifests an alternative to traditional structural systems. The hybrid approach links a material system with simulation and the iterative generation of geometry through a process of calibration at different stages of design. The project leverages emerging computational strategies for growth in a model for an architectural practice that engages the complexity and interdependencies that characterise a contemporary design practice.

summary In real-time virtual reality walkthrough, there is a minimum frame replacement rate needed to maintain the “smoothness” of walking through a scene. This paper identifies the variables that affect efficient real-time walkthrough of architectural models on an affordable PC platform. Experiments were conducted to determine how each variable affects the frame rate and memory consumption. The results will help guide architects and students to better manage their CAD model in order to achieve smooth real-time walkthroughs in their presentation.

summary In this paper, we propose a design of an interactive message wall as a public display for large group setting such as a university community to encourage user participation, social interaction and creation of user content. It is a public display for collective sharing of thoughts. It is also a portal for online users to make their presence felt in the physical place. Both users at the physical place and in an online virtual world can post messages to the interactive message wall. The paper will present user studies carried out with a mock-up message wall to establish how onsite users use it, their preferred ways to leave messages, what medium of content (voice, photo, text, video) they are willing to share, and user participation. The results of the user studies will inform the design of the interactive message wall and provide learning points on how to promote user participation.

summary Performance-based architectural design often faces challenges due to the complex interactions between wind, solar data, and building massing. Although massing optimization frameworks help address these challenges, limitations still exist, such as restricting designers' authorship and being time-consuming. To tackle these issues, a new workflow is proposed that combines wind and sun analysis, Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), and machine learning (ML) methods. This framework consists of two main stages: (1) combining designer intention with wind and solar simulations in an EA to generate optimized massing based on real-world buildings, and (2) training a machine learning model that remaps the distribution of the designer's intentions and building layouts. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed workflow in generating efficient and detailed building massing layouts that meet specific requirements. This "designer-centric" approach enables machines to optimize architect’s intentions, rather than forcing them to adapt to machine calculations. It will become an efficient, user-friendly human-machine collaborative tool for assisting in future building layout designs.
