summary In recent years much avant-garde architectural work has been dominated by a process based theoretical paradigm, inspired largely by various thinkers, critics, and philosophers. This particular ‘process practice’ attempts to address the paradox at the heart of contemporary production, by looking dialectically at the relationship between structure and ornament in nature with brainstorming and use of computer simulation.

title Retail Commercial Space Clustering Based on Post-carbon Era Context: A Case Study of Shanghai
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2022.1.515
source Jeroen van Ameijde, Nicole Gardner, Kyung Hoon Hyun, Dan Luo, Urvi Sheth (eds.), POST-CARBON - Proceedings of the 27th CAADRIA Conference, Sydney, 9-15 April 2022, pp. 515-524
summary In the post-carbon era, it has become a development and research trend on adjusting commercial locations to help achieve resource conservation by using big data. This paper uses multi-source urban data and machine learning to make reasonable evaluations and adjustments to commercial district planning. Many relevant factors are affecting urban commercial agglomeration, but how to select the appropriate ones among the many factors is a problem to be considered and studied, while there may be spatial differences in the strength of each influencing factor on commercial agglomeration. Therefore, this paper takes Shanghai, a city with a high economic and commercial development level in China, as an example and identifies the influencing factors through a literature review. Next, this paper uses the machine learning BORUTA algorithm of features selection to screen the influencing factors. It then uses multi-scale geographically weighted regression model (MGWR) to analyse the spatial heterogeneity of factors affecting retail spatial agglomeration. Finally, based on the background of the changing transportation modes and the unchanged social activities in the post-carbon era, the future spatial planning pattern of retail commercial space is discussed to provide particular suggestions for the future location adjustment of urban commerce.

title A Volumetric Method for Building Complex Models from Range Images
source Stanford University
summary A number of techniques have been developed for reconstructing surfaces by integrating groups of aligned range images. A desirable set of properties for such algorithms includes: incremental updating, representation of directional uncertainty, the ability to fill gaps in the reconstruction, and robustness in the presence of outliers. Prior algorithms possess subsets of these properties. In this paper, we present a volumetric method for integrating range images that possesses all of these properties. Our volumetric representation consists of a cumulative weighted signed distance function. Working with one range image at a time, we first scan-convert it to a distance function, then combine this with the data already acquired using a simple additive scheme. To achieve space efficiency, we employ a run-length encoding of the volume. To achieve time efficiency, we resample the range image to align with the voxel grid and traverse the range and voxel scanlines synchronously. We generate the final manifold by extracting an isosurface from the volumetric grid. We show that under certain assumptions, this isosurface is optimal in the least squares sense. To fill gaps in the model, we tessellate over the boundaries between regions seen to be empty and regions never observed. Using this method, we are able to integrate a large number of range images (as many as 70) yielding seamless, high-detail models of up to 2.6 million triangles.

title Pseudo-cross-modal Translation: Bridging Architectural Plan and Perspective through a pix2pix Network
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2024.1.179
source Nicole Gardner, Christiane M. Herr, Likai Wang, Hirano Toshiki, Sumbul Ahmad Khan (eds.), ACCELERATED DESIGN - Proceedings of the 29th CAADRIA Conference, Singapore, 20-26 April 2024, Volume 1, pp. 179–188
summary Architectural pedagogy often segments designs into diverse representation forms like plans and renderings. With AI's growing influence on early design through GANs, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, there remains a gap in translating between diverse architectural representations, a phenomenon we term 'Pseudo-cross-modal Translation', indicating the indirect transformation between non-analogous architectural representations. Addressing this, our research hypotheses a practical need and actionable possibility to translate architectural plans into perspective renderings via neural networks, exploiting the information differences between them. We navigate this intricate translation utilising a pix2pix network of which the dataset encompasses plans with designated view cones and corresponding rendered perspectives. The training data are sampled from the model of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and its variations. Evaluations through perceptual surveys, which incorporate modifications in information complexity of plans, illuminate the neural networks' nuanced capability to bridge plans and perspectives under various conditions. Our results not only validate this translation but also spotlight the computational statistics' latent potential in deciphering unseen spatial features from the variance between plans and perspectives. This work unveils a novel method for generating architectural imagery, promoting a holistic spatial understanding. center8641080

title Digital Places: Living With Geographic Information Technologies
source N.Y.: Routledge
summary The last twenty-five years have seen major changes in the nature and scope of geographical information. This has happened in one way in society at large, where computers, satellites and global positioning systems have made geographical information more extensive, more detailed and more available. It has happened in another way within the university, where rapidly evolving geographic information systems have been touted as tools useful in a wide range of disciplines, tools that will resolve problems as different as the nature of global climate change and the routing of mail. In both settings the move from manual to computer-based systems is viewed as having a natural trajectory, from less powerful to more powerful technologies. These systems are held to be increasingly able to model and represent all that is important in geographical knowledge and behaviour. They are seen as fitting into and supporting traditional scientific and social practices and institutions. Digital Places: Living with Geographic Information Technologies shows that on each score the systems have been misunderstood and their impacts underestimated. By offering an understanding of Geographic Information Systems within the social, economic, legal, political and ethical contexts within which they exist, the author shows that there are substantial limits to their ability to represent the very objects and relationships, people and places, that many believe to be most important. Focusing on the ramifications of GIS usage, Digital Places shows that they are associated with far-reaching changes in the institutions in which they exist, and in the lives of those they touch. In the end they call for a complete rethinking of basic ideas, like privacy and intellectual property and the nature of scientific practice, that have underpinned public life for the last one hundred years.

title A semantic web approach for built heritage representation
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 384.
summary In a built heritage process, meant as a structured system of activities aimed at the investigation, preservation, and management of architectural heritage, any task accomplished by the several actors involved in it is deeply influenced by the way the knowledge is represented and shared. In the current heritage practice, knowledge representation and management have shown several limitations due to the difficulty of dealing with large amount of extremely heterogeneous data. On this basis, this research aims at extending semantic web approaches and technologies to architectural heritage knowledge management in order to provide an integrated and multidisciplinary representation of the artifact and of the knowledge necessary to support any decision or any intervention and management activity. To this purpose, an ontology-based system, representing the knowledge related to the artifact and its contexts, has been developed through the formalization of domain-specific entities and relationships between them.

summary We investigate the creation and reinterpretation of an architectural design process using a variety of digital and physical media. We study how tools for design influence perception, comprehension and creation of spatial volumes within both Virtual Environments (VE) and physical realms. We explain how designers translate spatial volumes and communicate architectural design ideas by using VE and conventional models. In a series of reinterpretation of architectural meanings we examine the translation of threedimensional design from virtual to tangible depictions and vice versa. We conduct a design-studio in order to explore issues of quality, understanding, communication and building of architectural compositions. VE can be an environment for design distinguishable and facilitating reality. We test this statement by interchanging both realms to that extent that the boundaries of each one are nearly dismantled. Virtuality and reality are both used in alternative formand design-finding exercises in order to gain an overall conclusive design.

title High Precision Visibility and Dominance Analysis of Tall Building in Cityscape - On a basis of Digital Surface Model
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2018.1.481
source Kepczynska-Walczak, A, Bialkowski, S (eds.), Computing for a better tomorrow - Proceedings of the 36th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland, 19-21 September 2018, pp. 481-488
summary The article presents a methodology applied for the assessment of the tall building visual impact on the city scape, using digital tools. The method has been used by the author in the planning practice in several cities in Poland. It enables to determine not only the visibility range of a planned tall building in the city spaces, but also the extent to which it dominates. Findings are presented in a map which reflects both parameters applicable to a given facility. Computation of findings is based on the model of a city consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model) of high quality and dedicated C++ software (developed in cooperation with author). The Visual Impact Size (VIS) method supports the process of conservation and landscaping, in particular in historical cities. It helps predicting spatial implications tall buildings may have. It may also be used for comprehensive development of a modern skyline with tall buildings as a harmonious component of the cityscape. The method is presented using the case study of the Hanza Tower building in Szczecin (Poland).

summary Since the 80s, several researches have developed the theoretical notions of sound effects, sound proxemy, city sound identities, sound comfort, architectural sound prototypes which were meant to help designers consider sound in their projects. Nevertheless, taking care of the inherent sound dimensions in architectural urban projects remains an unresolved challenge. The researches of the last 30 years have shown how the sound environment qualities are forgotten in favour of visual qualities. This article presents a new method dedicated to generating simple sound sketches for architectural conception while preserving the complexity of acoustic simulation. This paper argues that the Esquis'sons! sound sketch tool reconfigures architectural design by considering an innovative view its the temporality, allowed by numeric designing tools able to intervene and offer a continuous feedback regarding sound environment.

summary This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cybernetic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.

summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.

It is intended to identify how these drawings, using tablets, keep the perception and the personal dash of each one. This research aims not only to review and update the drawing´s disciplines in the architecture courses - its practices and procedures - but also to discuss the actual role of representation - analogical or digital - and its interaction with others disciplines. The first research, done in 2011, indicated possibilities of interface with CAD, Revit and Sketch-up. The second part, in course in this year, 2012, is trying to experiment the use of tablets in three others disciplines: History of Architecture and Urbanism I, Landscaping and Project I, in the Instituto de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da USP, São Carlos, Brasil.

summary Emerging technologies of design and production have largely changed the role of drawings within the contemporary design process from that of design generators to design products. As architectural design has shifted from an analog drawing-based paradigm to that of a computational model-based paradigm, the agency of the drawing as a critical and important form of design representation has greatly diminished. As our design tools have increasingly become computational and the production of our drawings have become predominantly automated, this paper examines the effects on the architectural discipline and attempts to catalog examples of how artists, designers, architects, and programmers have used rule-based techniques in the process of drawing as a critical act in their process. Furthermore, the paper presents the Drawing Codes project, an ongoing research and exhibition platform that critically investigates the intersection of code and drawing: how rules and constraints inform the ways architects document, analyze, represent, and design the built environment. The project features commissioned drawings by a range of contemporary architects and designers as a means of gathering a diverse set of perspectives on how computational techniques, but more importantly, computational thinking, can reexamine the role of architectural drawing as a creative and critical act.
