summary This communication is part of six other contributions from different authors, which aim to provide an overall discussion of a Brazilian Virtual Design Studio. This paper focuses the tools applied in a VDS within a Latin-American context of public universities with limited budget and its organization. The tools are discussed in three main phases of the exercise: the group formation, the design process, and the debates and crits. Despite the limited resources, we conclude and suggest that such experience should be pursued by other schools in similar conditions.

summary From final of the last decade of the sixties, graphic positions have gone appearing in the representation of the architecture despite the traditional operability. This has happened, especially, in the environment of what has understood each other as architectural neo-avant-gardes, the tendency characterized by the experimentation starting from different aspects of a modern space and the most renovating in what concerns to the architectural representation . and in the context of the new representation technologies. Starting from here an investigation line has been created . that has generated publications, subjects, etc,... . in which has shown that, through this current, it has been reflecting the open character of the representation and its capacity of current renovation, in correspondence with the architectural contents, at the same time as the bases of the introduced expression of the contemporary architectural project have settled down.

Objetivou-se desenvolver e implantar um makerspace focado no protagonismo social, inicialmente proporcionado pelo acesso a impressoras 3D. A metodologia utilizada teve duas etapas: a etnografia e o design participativo escandinavo. Por meio dos dados obtidos prototipou-se a realidade local e entendeu-se a importância do makerspace para o empoderamento. As impressoras 3D foram desenvolvidas utilizando sucata eletrônica. summary The paper describes the application of non-linear structural analysis methods to address archaeological questions concerning the reconstruction of the ancient city of Pompeii after a major earthquake that occurred 17 yr prior to the famous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. It presents preliminary findings in an effort to develop an approach to modelling the two-way out-of-plane behavior of unreinforced masonry walls, including comparison studies with published analytic and experimental results for one-way loaded walls, plus a trial analysis for a two-way span condition. The approach requires the application of computationally intensive non-linear analysis techniques, since the linear analysis methods used in conventional design and education are inadequate to model the behavior of unreinforced masonry. Developing an understanding of the two-way behavior of unreinforced masonry has implications not only for archaeological investigation of ancient structures, but also for modern renovation of historic structures.

title A Machine Learning Approach to Translate Graph Representations into Conceptual Massing Models

summary Machine learning (ML) has popular applications in domains involving image, video, text and voice. However, in architecture, image-based ML systems face challenges capturing the complexity of three-dimensional space. In this paper, we leverage a graph-based ML system that can capture the inherent topology of architectural conceptual designs and identify high-performing latent patterns within such designs. In particular, our goal is to translate architectural graph data into three-dimensional massing models. We are building on our prior ML work, where we, a. discovered latent topological features, b. composed building blocks into new designs, c. evaluated their feasibility, and d. explored Generative Adversarial (Neural) Networks (GAN)-generated design variations. We trained the ML system with architectural design data that we gathered from an online architectural design competition platform, translated them into machine-readable graph representations, and identified their essential subgraphs to develop novel compositions. In this paper, we explore how these novel designs (outputted in graph form), can be translated into three-dimensional architectural form. We present an ML approach to turn graph representations into functional volumetric massing models. The ultimate goal of the study is to develop an end-to-end pipeline to generate architectural design - from a graph representation to a fully developed conceptual proxy of a designed product. The research question is promising in automating conceptual design, and we believe the outcome can be relevant to other design disciplines as well.

summary The convergence of cyber-physical systems, expansive internet growth, and intensified human-device interactions have led to exponential data consumption, resulting in information overload within society. This research addresses this information overload and its impact on digital wellbeing through development of an augmented reality (AR) tool, aiming to facilitate personalized data-driven introspection and enhance the utility of consumed information. By merging digital and physical realms, the tool facilitates tangible data exploration, transforming complex information into understandable interactions. It extracts and categorizes user browsing history data by domains, days, and time and leverages OpenAI's LLM GPT model to categorize the consumed digital content. Developed with Unity, the AR tool visualizes the data in layers in users' environments, promoting active personalized data sense-making. This research introduces an approach to data presentation that promotes information literacy and envisions an empowered society having a holistic, informed relationship with technology where users seamlessly interact with their digital presence.

summary This paper is the culmination of the first phase of research in the development of adaptive surface conditions which can mitigate extreme climatic scenarios, specifically air pollution. How can the discipline of architecture address worst-case climate scenarios within inhabitable structures? The question asked throughout this case study and research project was essentially based on a critique of the architectural community’s utilization of sustainable technologies in design, and whether current design initiatives were in fact aggressive enough in their approach to “green” building. While assessing the probable environmental changes likely to affect the architectural discipline in the future, this research project developed computational simulations of polluted atmospheres in order to develop surfaces which would respond formally.

summary Digital architecture contingent upon a conversation between digital visualization and digital production deploys an iterative and seamless process-oriented design development. Feedback loops are integral to this process/product, and thus require extensive management of complex visual and data related information. While much attention has been paid to fabrication and serial customization of digital architecture, very little discussion has been forwarded about innovations in visualizing and representing the design data integral in this feedback loop. This paper will examine innovative representational devices such as the matrix, sectioning, layering, and bracketing as new forms of organizing and visualizing complex data intent upon communicating multiple levels of operations during the fabrication process.

summary Documentation of rock art is generally made by drawing with a marker over a plastic film overlaid to the wall of the canyon or cave where it is found. Taking out the drawing printed in the film from the wall implies in loosing important data about its contour because the image became rectified; information about the relief of the documented figure are lost as well. We have used close range photogrammetry methodology to overcome this problem and, on the other hand, to preserve information about the relief of the picture itself, taking into account the fragility of the rock support.

summary This paper outlines the work and organizational framework of World16, a working group of 16 professors from around the world that engage in collaborative research on virtual reality (VR) technologies. Because of the abundance of VR software and the resulting fragmentation of research efforts in this field, World16 shares knowledge and resources using a common software package. A common research platform facilitates the sharing of data and the coordination of research efforts among member professors spread around the world. In addition to the organizational practices of World16’s project management team, various tools and methods of sharing research are described. Additionally, World16’s major research projects are outlined as well as the successes and failures of working within a shared software platform. Lastly, future work and goals of World16 are discussed, including the marketing and commercialization of several computational tools created by member professors.

summary In this text we discuss the disruption possibilities in the contextual structures of occidental dichotomies, considering the changes produced by the new technologies of production, reproduction and consumption of digital images. We believe that the digital image, as a sign system that is less committed to social reality, is capable of producing a critical dialogue, expanding perception and founding a new visual poetic. We start with Belting’s iconological triad—image, media, body—to approach hybridization processes that suggest a disruption tendency of old dichotomies.

summary The term “continuity style” in cinema refers to a collection of cinematic conventions aiming at a realistic viewing experience without drawing attention to the elements of illusion used in the representation of 3D space on 2D film. The continuity style underlies the majority of narrative films produced to date and has had a significant influence on other genres, including documentaries. Despite the similarities in purpose, architectural filmmaking owes little to the cumulative knowledge of filmmaking encapsulated in the continuity style. While narrative films focus on the viewing experience, architectural animation tends to be dominated by integral 3D building models. We propose that key elements of the continuity style could be applied to architectural dynamic visualization in order to enhance both lay perception of architectural space and professional analysis of design intentions. These elements refer to four primary areas of architectural dynamic visualization: narrative, camera use, lighting and model structure.

summary This article describes experiments of IT-supported cooperation in AEC pedagogical context. The Digital Cooperative Studio (SDC) places students in a situation of distant design cooperation. This experiment allows students to be confronted to a cross-disciplinary approach of the architectural design and leads to the analysis of their own cooperation processes. Two editions of the Digital Cooperative Studio have been carried out in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. This article presents the lessons learnt from these two experiments.

title Tangential surfaces to optimize digital manufacturing of complex shapes

summary The knowledge of geometric-mathematical rules allows to solve several problems about complex systems design and manufacturing. Geometric genesis of surfaces and their properties represent the main basis to solve both constructive and measurement problems. A developable surface can be manufactured starting from a flat strip, using a flexible and non- deformable material. Geometry studies properties that don't change and, therefore, the shape of the strip to obtain a certain configuration after a series of rigid movements. Our goal is to test different approches (Additive Manufacturing vs Subtractive Manufacturing) to manufacture a lamp using a tangential developable surface.

summary The growth of urban settlements is a phenomenon on the rise. It is expected that more than 70% of the people will live in urban settlements by 2050. To be able to tackle and embrace this growth, we need alternative tools that help us to face these challenges. On this framework, this proposal aims to raise the paradigm of how the information can be gathered and used to equilibrate urban systems in terms of planning concerning the distribution of resources. To achieve this goal, the exchange of data through an organic system of biochemical interaction network is proposed.
