summary This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.

summary This paper is a theoretical essay on the installation database. database is an electronic reading device that deals with the inversed functionality of three technologies: a printer, a video-camera and a database. Consequently, it raises issues about the erasure of text, the act of reading in real time (i.e., listening to a printed text), and physical databases. We challenge theidea of databases as non-linear and digital structures, and printers as output devices as well as information recorders. The installation deals with the opposition between presence vs. absence, recording vs. erasing, memory vs. forgetfulness, present vs. continuous time, and reading vs. listening. These concepts are connected with the idea of present time as a time that is always passing by.

summary This article proposes a classification, under the Visualization Information point of view, of infographics broadcasted in the brazilian news television. To achieve this purpose these so called motion graphics were analised under the basis formed by three main authors: Tufte (1997), Bertin (1977) and Spence (2007), whose theories are in this article compared to the digital means of the motion graphics. With these theoretical foundation and the analisys of two hundred motion graphics broadcasted in the brazilian news television, we achieved a classification which covers every type of these motion graphics, hoping it becomes a basis for the study of these projects.

summary In the field of Architecture and Building Construction is increasing the tendency to search information in the old construction handbooks to find more easily the best solutions to the recovery of ancient buildings: to make them easily accessible we are developing an “electronic handbook” by using the technologies related to Internet. The paper reports on M.I.C.R.A. (Manuale Informatizzato per la Codifica della Regola d’Arte), a WBI System able to allow different kind of users (from experts in the fields of Architecture and Building Construction to university students) to easily find the information stored in the old construction handbooks -edited since the 18th century and normally stored in different libraries around Europe- and to immediately compare them each other. The system information management and the data structuring are explained by describing the design strategies and the specific “research criteria” we have adopted to the development of the system.

summary A computer program is being elaborated as an aid in designing assembled parts whose assembly presents high degrees of complexity. The newly created program, once incorporated in the CAD sector to increase its potential applications, will facilitate the analysis of reciprocal relationhips between pieces of the assemblage; this will enhance optimum decision-making in terms of geometric and functional characteristics with respect to the previously conceived assembly sequence. The program will automatically create images in three different ways: instantaneous images of assembly stages for each piece of the assembled part; exploded axonometric view of the whole structure with indications of necessary procedures for inserting or connecting the assembled part;sequenced procedures for connecting the assembled part. The different methods of visualization listed above will allow for project verification of the part by means of simultaneous visual analysis of the images and rapid updating should any changes in their properties arise. These types of visualization include simulations of piece by piece assemblage, which will facilitate an "optimal assemblage", meaning a set of components which are assembled in a specific sequence according to their "structural compatibility" and taking into consideration "particular assembly requirements".

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.

title Rendering synthetic objects into real scenes: Bridging traditional and image-based graphics with global illumination and high dynamic range photography

summary We present a method that uses measured scene radiance and global illumination in order to add new objects to light-based models with correct lighting. The method uses a high dynamic range imagebased model of the scene, rather than synthetic light sources, to illuminate the newobjects. To compute the illumination, the scene is considered as three components: the distant scene, the local scene, and the synthetic objects. The distant scene is assumed to be photometrically unaffected by the objects, obviating the need for re- flectance model information. The local scene is endowed with estimated reflectance model information so that it can catch shadows and receive reflected light from the new objects. Renderings are created with a standard global illumination method by simulating the interaction of light amongst the three components. A differential rendering technique allows for good results to be obtained when only an estimate of the local scene reflectance properties is known. We apply the general method to the problem of rendering synthetic objects into real scenes. The light-based model is constructed from an approximate geometric model of the scene and by using a light probe to measure the incident illumination at the location of the synthetic objects. The global illumination solution is then composited into a photograph of the scene using the differential rendering technique. We conclude by discussing the relevance of the technique to recovering surface reflectance properties in uncontrolled lighting situations. Applications of the method include visual effects, interior design, and architectural visualization.

summary The emergence of media infused facades and new human computer interfaces have been of great interest in architecture in the recent decades. Most of the emerging examples are geared towards a multi-dimensional graphical output and most commonly stimulate our sense of sight. This paper explores recent developments in soft robotics and material sciences, developed at the Material Dynamics Lab at NJIT, that will allow the human computer interfaces to engage its users by captivating a multitude of senses simultaneously. Furthermore, this paper will contemplate future trajectories for the novel material strategies to improve human-computer or human-robot interaction, that one day may lead to truly robotic architectures.

summary In a society where all productions tend to insidiously become uniform, ignoring any cultural particularism, historical or social, the philosophy of Studio Odile Decq (the Studio) has always been to be specific and particular. By questioning the command, the use, the matter, the body, the technique, and the taste, the invented architecture offers a paradoxical look, at the same time tender and severe, on our world. In a creative and positive work process, the obstacles are always transformed into advantages, all while developing a specific image for each project with the most advanced contemporary technologies. On the occasion of the realization of numerous architectural projects, the Studio has also often developed the interior fittings and the furniture, in a continuity of thought and in relation with needs, each time different and specific. The Studio’s work is a complete universe, in which architecture, design, art and urbanism come together, challenge each other, and respond to each other. The direct style of Odile Decq is matched by her architecture, with bold geometries and innovative creations. In the same continuity, the Studio interfaces with industrial companies, in fields as daiverse as lighting, acoustics, glazing, and furniture design, responding each time to special technical requirements. The conceptual process, centered around experimentation, is closely followed by Odile Decq herself. Thus, the design includes, from the start all the parameters to succeed, in an initially iterative approach, to arrive at a perfectly integrated project.

An active dialogue within and through a design process can and should address these phenomena.

title Instance and System: a Figure and its 2.18 Variations

summary From the structural characteristics of an existing figure - a graphical logo – a plausible solution space of related figures is constructed, which contains all other figures, which may be generated by systematically exploiting the structural characteristics of the input figure. The constructed space of figures can be understood to represent the solution space for the design of the logo. A designer, proceeding systematically by following some generative set of rules would have to construct this solution space at least to the point of a decision, if not entirely. In the presented experiment, this “solution space” will be exhausted completely and the resulting images (there are 218 will be outputted graphically. Questions will be asked concerning the design process, the generative rules, and the selection of the one instance representing a solution. The presented results are to be seen as “work in progress”.

summary The motivation to explore Attentional Generative Adversarial Networks (AttnGAN) as a design technique in architecture can be found in the desire to interrogate an alternative design methodology that does not rely on images as starting point for architecture design, but language. Traditionally architecture design relies on visual language to initiate a design process, wither this be a napkin sketch or a quick doodle in a 3D modeling environment. AttnGAN explores the information space present in programmatic needs, expressed in written form, and transforms them into a visual output. The key results of this research are shown in this paper with a proof-of-concept project: the competition entry for the 24 Highschool in Shenzhen, China. This award-winning project demonstrated the ability of GraphCNN to serve as a successful design methodology for a complex architecture program. In the area of Neural Architecture, this technique allows to interrogate shape through language. An alternative design method that creates its own unique sensibility.

summary Artificial Neural Networks (NN) have become ubiquitous across disciplines due to their high performance in modeling the real world to execute complex tasks in the wild. This paper presents a computational design approach that uses the internal representations of deep vision neural networks to generate and transfer stylistic form edits to both 2D floor plans and building sections. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate and interrogate a design technique based on deep learning. The discussion includes aspects of machine learning, 2D to 2D style transfers, and generative adversarial processes. The paper examines the meaning of agency in a world where decision making processes are defined by human/machine collaborations (Figure 1), and their relationship to aspects of a Posthuman design ecology. Taking cues from the language used by experts in AI, such as Hallucinations, Dreaming, Style Transfer, and Vision, the paper strives to clarify the position and role of Artificial Intelligence in the discipline of Architecture.

summary Architectural computing too often is disengaged from the central culture of architectural discourse and traditional means of making. This paper proposes that one way to bridge this gap is to introduce electronic media in the context of a process-oriented theory of architectural representation - one that is principally concerned with issues of conception, intention, and perception. This approach to the use of computers in the design process requires the introduction of a morphology of representational modes that are intrinsic to the Architect and his musings, and proposes a pedagogical emphasis on electronic media's ability to perform in conjunction with the design intentions of these various representational forms.

summary This paper focuses on the woven textiles of Otavalo, Ecuador, as a case study for improved cultural representation in architectural design. A shape grammar methodology is used to identify specific geometry and elucidate relationship rules found in existing artifacts. These geometry and relationships are subsequently used to produce patterns; both replicas of traditional tapestries as well as new configurations. Extending from 2D to 3D and from digital to physical, sets of modular prototypes are developed based on patterns produced using the defined Otavalo Textile Grammar. Model parts are supplied to study participants; new building blocks for architecture as a spatial and social undertaking.

summary Outline of development of a revised base ITC course at the Faculty is shown here. The course, called Introduction To Information Technology Implementation is aimed for 2nd year students (3rd semester) of the study. For the first time it was held in the winter semester of 2002/03 as a pilot course replacing the old way of course delivery. This implementation was carried out through a “pathfinder” project WORMES from February 2002 till March 2003 and would be used as a template for future Hyperlearning implementation on other courses through other Faculty education programes. The objective was to establish continuous students teamwork around a problem – a project completely accomplished in IT surround. A slightly adapted methodology known as Hyperlearning – a version of Problem Based Learning, was chosen as a based learning methodology for a new way of course delivery. The gained results were really impressive. Not only efficiency of delivery was increased in many ways (less hours spent on exercises, better knowledge detaining...) but also huge enthusiasm among students was constantly maintained and their creativity was emphasized surprisingly. A lot of data were collected, analyzed and some of the results are published here.

summary This paper aims to discuss alternative and innovative plan models for Chinese cities that are currently under rapid development. Our study considers Complexity Theories of Cities as theoretical base and applies a holistic approach in city planning by recognizing the complex nature of city. We strive to integrate the diverse local structure in social and spatial aspects with the ambition and demands of city’s expansion. Digital sequence simulation is used as an innovative tool to represent local activities, promote interventions and predict possible self-organization process in the future. The study arrives at an open scenario the feasible prospect. A conclusion is drawn to reflect the process, achievement and weakness of the research.
