summary All over the world, local authorities are moving towards managing and storing urban data in digital form. But the data storage devices used are heterogeneous and typically include relational database management systems (DBMS), GIS and CAD files. As a result, data are present in different locations on different platforms and under different schemas. This poses a problem for software applications meant to support decision-making in urban design that require input from more than one data source. This dissertation demonstrates how data warehousing—combined with object-oriented data modeling—is able to provide a general solution for this problem. Data warehousing is a technique initially developed for business applications, but is equally useful for urban design: The data warehouse constitutes a communication layer between the urban design applications and data sources. It makes the data available through a unified interface that hides the sources themselves and represents that data in terms of a general-purpose, preferably object-oriented, model. The dissertation also describes an implementation prototype of the data model and the data warehouse. The test case of this research is the city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia, which faces significant urban design and planning issues in connection with the pilgrimage (Hajj) that brings millions of visitors to the city every year.

summary In this paper, we outline the problem of historic preservation and the opportunities that rigorous CAD models provide to address it, describe the particular class of buildings in Makkah that we are concerned with, and discuss a modeling strategy that takes advantage of common elements, symmetry and repetition in the buildings' construction, and standard operations in current CAD programs. We briefly discuss tools for architectural heritage recording, construction of CAD models of historic buildings, and systematic analysis of built form. Finally, the paper shows how the method can streamline the construction of accurate CAD models.

summary Evaluating the use of architectural and urban spaces is an important issue for architects and urban designers who wish to enhance space usability. Space usability is crucial in crowded spaces such as Mataf areas. Millions of people come to the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia every year to perform Hajj (Islamic Pilgrimage) and Umrah. A cornerstone of Hajj and Umrah spirituals is to perform Tawaf, which is the circumambulation of the Ka'bah in the center of the Holy Mosque in Makkah. The areas of performing Tawaf (called Mataf) become very crowded during Hajj and the last ten days of Ramadan. This paper demonstrates how we utilized Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze pedestrian movement while performing Tawaf. During the Hajj of 1424 H (2004 in the Georgian Calendar), several GPS devices were used to collect pedestrian movement coordinates at specific time intervals. Computer software for tracking analysis is used to visualize and analyze the pattern of pedestrian movement in Tawaf. The software allows users to view temporal data, which can be set up with past time windows for historical data analysis. The findings of this research show levels of service and flow rates throughout different zones and times of Mataf. They indicate the most critical zones and times for Tawaf during Hajj. They also visually demonstrate the track pattern of pedestrian movement at different locations in the Tawaf area. The paper concludes with some redesign recommendations to remove obstacles and facilitate pedestrian movement in Tawaf. The approach described in this paper can be implemented in architectural and urban design space modifications to improve pedestrian movement in open spaces.

summary At the present time, when the problem of professional skill perfection is especially important, the designing methods perfection in order to provide "objectivization" of the form building process becomes also more and more important. The designing process analysis shows that one should not fully rely on the designer's intuition either while forming such complex organism as architectural form. But the simple thought that the appearance of some new technique results in the appearance of some new technology is not yet fully recognized. The questions of ,studying" the new technique, its "introduction" into designing practice etc. are being discussed. All this reminds one of the wide campaign once carried on to "introduce" scientific labour organization without a previous stage of this scientific organisation development which was sure to result in the discredit of the whole trend.

summary Traditional ways of an aesthetic expression like hand drawing and renderings, painting and artistic graphics, are now enriched by computer multimedia techniques. The multimedia techniques are used in the Department of Architecture of Warsaw University of Technology for presentation of student´s design. The connected media, like computer renderings, animations and sound are used to express sophisticated aesthetics intentions by students in their conceptual designs. In the past two years, three inexpensive multimedia editors were tested on PC´s: Tempra Media Author, HSC Interactive and Multimedia Director 4.0. The most convenient, but not excellent, for our purposes was The Tempra Media Author. Several aspects of multimedia presentation were analyzed and some suggestions for the future were done.

summary The paper is focused on selected issues of preliminary education of computer techniques as part of first semester curriculum at a school of architecture. Teaching methods based on previously known research are tested and explored in a situation of clearly defined constraints: lack of architecture-specific knowledge of the novices and varying levels of their computer skills. The paper is based on three-year experience. Although we are all in the mood of saying: we do not teach software any more, we still have to think how to encourage students to develop their skills in computer techniques to the level that can liberate them from tool-dependence. The aim is to direct them towards task rather than tool oriented actions. Learning while designing causes the design process to be less important than representation. On the other hand, classic software courses are a thing of the far past and are not suited for design-oriented curriculum. There is a need to find alternative ways more suitable for a preliminary architecture IT course.

title Digital Architectural Design as Exploration of Computable Functions

summary In recent decades, new methodologies have emerged in architectural design that exploit the computer as a design tool. This has generated a varied set of digital skills and a new type of architectural knowledge. However, up to now, a theoretical framework is missing that would allow for a comprehensive pedagogical agenda for the teaching of digital design in architecture. The present paper offers an attempt towards such a theoretical grounding based on the concept of computable functions. This approach results in an abstract and formal perspective on digital design that enables a grouping of contemporary digital design methods and an understanding of their logical relationship. On a theoretical level, it opens a path for the study of the mechanism that facilitates the transfer of concepts from various scientific disciplines into architecture.

summary Over centuries architects have developed frameworks of representation of the built surroundings in diverse types of drawings or models. With the rise of digital techniques, virtual models slowly replace these representation techniques but are still far from replicating the real world's ambiguity and complexity. This paper wants to address the representational problems of architecture combined with architecture-related AI systems and missing standardized tests for such systems. For this, we suggest a standardized computational testbed that can serve for developing, testing and benchmarking design solutions for abstracted architectural problems with various AI approaches in a game-like environment.Furthermore, this paper will discuss architectural problems' subdivision into atomic subtasks solvable by specific AI systems. Ideally, there is a waste number of possible architectural subtasks that can be applied. The paper presents some examples of possible architectural game strategies that abstractly deal with concepts of walls and borders, zones and connections. Although this paper mentions different Reinforcement Learning techniques, it is not focusing on fine-tuning the AI algorithms. It aims to help achieve automation of specific design workflow phases, then in the longer term to optimize and propose alternative design solutions and improve the architectural community's overall work.

title Parametric Form Finding in Contemporary Architecture

summary The search of new geometry has been during the last years an interesting subject for Contemporary Architecture. As the 21st century brought a new era for architectural design, CAD programs have evolved together with the idea of Form Finding. The possibilities offered make the collaboration of the architect with the computer now possible in terms of searching the appropriate form for given cases. As the analysis of contemporary architectural pieces has indicated, the procedure of architectural design can be semi-automated. Parametric Form Finding is transferring generative approaches into the architectural design workflow by introducing a set of rules to describe the constrains of the form. Given this context, two methods have been realized, which are guided by the user by providing basic two dimensional shapes, restrictions and form characteristics. The approach is fitted in a plug-in for the modeling environment of Rhinoceros that generates three dimensional form based on the user?s input. The methods followed are being evaluated.

In this research, the process of putting together a new architectural object, the digital hologram, will be seen as one such mechanism. title Shattering the black box: Technicities of architectural manipulation

summary This article attempts to reverse a fallacy often met in architectural theories and practices: that of a supposed input which through processes of what one can broadly call translations generates a built output. The input–output fallacy produces an architectural black box that treats both architectural thinking and doing as a mere process of projecting, representing and annotating ‘properly’ what will later be executed. On the contrary, a manipulative account of architecture as an active process of ecological engineering will pave the way for not only reversing the fallacy but also towards a particular understanding of architectural practices: architectural technicities and their reticular, affective potentials. Drawing on the theories of Gilbert Simondon, André Leroi-Gourhan, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, I will examine how architecture can be genealogically approached as a reticular technicity which evolves by a reciprocal concretisation of its technical objects and a generalisation of its active practitioners: no longer the application of transcendental design rules, of symbolic deductions or statistical inductions but rather abductive heuristics of affective techniques; no input nor output but practices of sensorial amplification via material manipulation and vice versa.

summary The paper presents a framework for the recognition of free-hand sketches based on spatial and temporal information that permits identification of strokes, grouping of strokes into graphic symbols and recognition of depictions of building elements in the graphic symbols. It proposes that the symbols involved in 2D projections are generally small and manageable despite the vagueness and multiple layering of sketches.
