summary Despite the multiple initiatives of extension activities currently implemented at USP Sao Carlos (SP - Brazil), the relationship between university and society can be strengthened in the context of a public presence in the physical spaces of the Campus, especially considering the majority of the city's population, which is not integrated in its academic community and doesn’t use the same areas. This paper proposes that the products developed can encourage the neighboring communities of the Campus to enter its inner spaces, through a spatial familiarization in virtual environments. To achieve this, two distinct technologies were researched - virtual reality and virtual tour with 360° photography - evaluating their qualities and constraints. Finally, the main differences between the two processes were grouped in a comparative chart, as a result of this research.

summary Despite having the potential of being a durable building material, Biorock, a form of calcium carbonate formed by the electro-accumulation of minerals dissolved in seawater, has never been applied on an architectural level due to its slow accretion process. This paper aims to plays out the possible narrative of this slow accruing material process in the incrementally submerged coastline of Jakarta, to empower local marginalized communities to self-construct a new city for habitation using Biorock, especially where building material resources may be limited. Urban cores with basic communal, housing and aquaculture facilities will be established using Biorock as the main building structure, which would be harvested in response to the gradual sea level rise.

summary With the growing challenge of aging populations around the world, the study of the elderly service is an essential initiative to accommodate the particular needs of the disadvantaged communities and promote social equity. Previous research frameworks are very case-specific with limited evaluation indicators that cannot be extended to other scenarios and fields. Based on multi-source data and Geographic Information System (GIS), this paper quantifies and visualises the imbalance in the spatial distribution of elderly services in 218 neighbourhoods in Shijingshan District, Beijing, China. Mortality data were obtained, and the most contributing indicators to mortality were investigated by correlation analysis. Finally, mapping between other facility indicators to mortality rates was constructed using machine learning to further investigate the factors influencing the quality of elderly services at the community level. The conclusion shows that the functional density of transportation facilities, medical facilities, living services facilities, and the accessibility of elderly care facilities are most negatively correlated with mortality. The correlation conclusion is combined with a machine learning prediction model to provide future recommendations for the construction of unbalanced elderly neighbourhoods. This research offers a novel systematic method to study urban access to elderly services as well as a new perspective on improving social fairness.

summary Throughout Latin America urban cable-cars are fast becoming a normal sight with urban transport systems, taking residents and tourists to and from previously isolated locations and providing a new form of accessibility that was not possible before. As its popularity grows, it is important to understand the role that improved spatial connectivity plays in transforming these communities and discuss how this can be best measured. This is because the spatial conditions of informal settlements are often forgotten about when planning large scale upgrading programs. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore ways to interpret the role of spatial connectivity in the transformation process of informal settlements, through the case of Medellin's Urban Cable-car and the exploration of 'speed' as a measurable variable.

summary In order to plan effective strategies for the sustainable development of individual communities, as prescribed by the United Nations‚ Sustainable Development Goal 11, it is necessary for designers and policy makers to gain a deep awareness of the bond that connects people to their territory. AI-driven technologies, and specifically Object Recognition algorithms, are powerful tools that can be used to this end, as they make it possible to analyse huge amounts of pictures shared on social media by residents and visitors of a specific area. A model of the emotional, subjective point of view of the members of the community is thus generated, giving new insights that can support traditional techniques such as surveys and interviews. For the purposes of this research, three case studies have been considered: the neighbourhood around Siping Road in Shanghai, China; the village of Moscopole in southeastern Albania; the rural area of Oltrep Pavese in northern Italy. The results demonstrate that a conscious use of AI-driven technologies does not necessarily imply homogenisation and flattening of individual differences: on the contrary, in all three cases diversities tend to emerge, making it possible to recognise and enhance the individuality of each community and the genius loci of each place.

summary New social phenomena like digital nomads urge an upgrade in housing ownership. This research proposes an autonomous housing platform that shapes residential communities into adaptive and reconfigurable systems, framing a cycle of digitalization, fluidization and materialization of housing ownership. Specifically, the interactive interface carries the flexible ownership model that uses virtual space voxels as digital currency; the artificial intelligence algorithm drives the multilateral ownership negotiation and circulation, and modular robots complete the mapping from ownership status to real spaces. Taking project TESSERACT as a case study, we verified the feasibility of this method and presented expected co-living scenarios: the spaces and ownership are constantly adjusted according to demands and are always in the closest interaction with users. By exploring the ownership evolution, this research guides an integrated and inclusive housing system paradigm, triggering critical evaluation of traditional models and providing new ideas for solving housing problems in the post-digital era.

summary The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have, in recent years, undertaken several initiatives to make sustainability central to their urban agendas. This research aims to operationalize the concept of sustainable development – environmental, economic and socio-cultural – in the region, and develop parameters that define it. Using native neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi as a case study, it focuses on the development process of a computational toolkit which has two major components – a quantitative toolkit which contains modules for simulation of aspects of environmental and economic sustainability, and a spatial toolkit which contains modules for simulation of socio-spatial practices associated with the specific social and cultural context. One of the primary needs of these communities, identified through an extensive review of literature and through conversations with Emiratis, is that of visual and acoustical privacy. Privacy from neighbors and passers-by, externally, and between genders, internally within the house. Using this as a starting point, this paper describes the development process of a module that aims to measure levels of external visual privacy of surfaces at a housing plot level, from neighbors and passers-by. The first section of the paper establishes the context of the research. The second section focuses on describing the process of modeling built form and testing it for visibility and thus, privacy.

summary This paper presents considerations and refl ections based on experiments conducted in the course of cultural activities within the Hybrids Territories Project for Public Policies, fi nanced by FAPESP and in force at Nomads.usp since March 2011. Starting from previous experiences using classical methods of qualitative research, such as semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, other ways of approaching and understanding the complexity of urban and social realities were sought. The reflections here presented were formed from the trial of methodological procedures, derived from other fields of knowledge and practices already recurrent in some communities. The aim is to verify the limits and potentialities of previously tested procedures and instruments, structured through digital media, to understand the diversity of ways of living in social housing estates with housing units similar to each other and located in the outskirts of two different cities.

summary This research was put together by four Master's students from KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture, who are self-motivated to investigate the possibilities of collective methods for designing within the Urban context. This paper is divided into two parts, the first being a scholarly investigation into learning from the collective mentality shift, and movements; discovering the added values of operating immersion/eversion from the virtual worlds to the physical one and analyzing key factors for engaging the public on online communities. Following, the paper brings to light the challenges the future of urban planning faces during today's digital shift and the solutions possible through the introduction of digital platforms as support to urban planning structures. The second part is the complementation of the first, as the research team showcases the findings by testing out the learned concepts and conducting on-field social experiments. The paper concludes with an analysis of the results, and future directions to the research project.

summary The emergence of a data space (Big Data and IoT) and, with it, the proliferation of communication means, led many scholars to describe the city through a series of concepts like the informational city, the intelligent city or the cybercity, all of them being characterized by a strong networked consciousness (Castells, Graham, Boyer). The hypothesis of this paper is that game methodology is now gaining momentum and can act as enabler of smarter communities by an increasing access to data infrastructures. This is why the city can be seen as a series of connected playgrounds where interactive tools can support citizen engagement and decision making processes. It does so by going through relevant theoretical background on gamification in the urban context and best practices, to finally describe two student projects developed at CHORA Conscious City, TU Berlin. The two projects are experimental and explore the capabilities of interactive tools in order to support planning processes.

title Computational Analysis of the Environmental Impact of Building Designs

summary Concem for the environmental implications of human activities is becoming increasingly important to society. The concept of current development that does not compromise future generations! abilities to meet their needs is a goal for many communities and individuals (WCED 1987). These concerns require the evaluation and assessment of the potential environmental impact of human activities so that informed choices can be made. Building construction and operation activities are of significant importance in view of a) national and intemational economies, 6) resource consumption, c) human occupancy, and d) environmental impact. For example, in the United States the built environment represents an extensive investment, both as an annual expenditure and as an aggregate investment. In the mid-l980’s, up to 30% of new and remodeled buildings had indoor air quality related complaints. Buildings also consume approximately 35% of the primary energy in the U.S. every year, resulting in the release of 482 million metric tons of carbon in 1993. I Methods developed to assess the environmental impact of buildings and development patterns can and have taken multiple strategies. The most straightforward and simple methods use single factors, such as energy use or the mass of pollutant emissions as indicators of environmental performance. Other methods use categorization and weighting strategies. These gauge the effects of the emissions typically based on research studies and use a weighting or effect formulation to normalize, compare, and group emissions so that a scalar value can be assigned to a single or a set of emissions. These methods do not consider the characteristics of the context where the emissions occur.

summary Inspired by intelligent skin, this research constructs a soft pneumatic robotic architectural system based on the interaction between inflatable material agents and the human body. It aims to provide flexibly changeable scene modes for dynamic inhabiting through responsive spatial performance. From the idea of the Fun Palace and the structure and performance spatial methodology to the proposal of responsive/soft architecture and relevant examples such as Furl and Robot Soft, the literature review provides the foundation and direction for the establishment of research experiments. The research methodology is based on structure and performance, oriented to explore soft material agents, link input information and output modules to realize the manifestation of human-space interaction and spatial performance and assemble the basic configuration of the system. As a result, a synergistic architectural interaction system like a media center that can provide a variety of adaptive space scenes is built, which can realize real-time perception and responsive control of the interactive process, and at the same time provide richness of scene performance beyond established architectural configurations, confirming the possibility of creating a behaviorally responsive architecture by integrating modularly morphing spaces, AI-sensing systems, and interaction technologies. This study explored responsive human settlements by expanding soft pneumatic robots in architecture. It can expand to fields such as machine cognition at the input level, further realize the real-time feedback system at the output level, and can evolve with the information interconnection of urban landscapes and residential communities in terms of spatial interaction. The work gives a convincing vision of architectural intelligence through soft robotics and is expected to continue to develop and bring more inspiring innovations with its integrated methods and connotations.

summary The need of architecture to be visualized is completely inherent to the very core of the architectural territory. Although the use of the term ‘visualization’ is generic enough so as to imply vagueness and conceptual inconsistencies, this seems to be valid only to non architectural audiences and quite precise when referring to architecturally literate communities. Visualizations have not been employed just to entitle visual and pictorial qualities to a seemingly self_sufficient architectonic event. They have often been the vehicle to overcome situations of a broader impact. This paper will present four cases of visualizing architecture, not only as singular acts of architectural illustration but also as generative collective approaches on the issue.

summary Oberhausen/Germany is said to be the birth place of the Ruhr industry. At present we can witness a unique structural change in the history of this city. Well into the sixties still an internationally renowned industrial location for coal and steel Oberhausen shall, according to the plans of local and regional governments, be developed into a center of service industries of top European niveau within the next three years. This development was and is the logical consequence of its salient position in the nexus of important European traffic routes. If one includes nearby Holland which is situated to the northwest Oberhausen can draw on the resources of a substantial market area. Attractive services provided, it can and shall be developed into an international center of attraction for more than 13 million people within a travel time radius of only 60 minutes. In its present borders, the town comprises the communities of Sterkrade, Osterfeld and old Oberhausen which had been independent up to 1929. On their joint boundaries a competitive metropolis of coal related and heavy industry developed, and that particularly after the Second World War. Oberhausen had excellent connections on water, rail and road with all the supraregional transportation networks. The continuous economic power of the settlement area could, apparently, not be questioned. At the beginning of the sixties Oberhausen was hit the harder by the downfall of this seemingly safe economic branch. Up to 1992 almost 40 000 jobs were lost in the city. Within 30 years Oberhausen lost everything it had gained in the years since its foundation. In the heart of the city a huge industrial wasteland was left.

summary Actuated traffic signal controllers typically depend on inductive loop detectors to determine demand for a particular signal phase. The basic philosophy of these controllers is to only provide a green indication to a particular lane group when there is a vehicle waiting. If an inductive loop detector fails, it must be put in recall mode so that the lane group with the corresponding failed detector is serviced every cycle. When actuated controllers operate in this mode, the performance of the signalized intersection degenerates. Since the vast majority of actuated intersections operate with inductive loop detectors it is useful to have maintenance procedures that can be used to replace loop detectors that have failed due to pavement distress. This paper describes a procedure that has been developed using directional boring equipment to install a micro loop below the surface of the pavement where it is not subject to pavement distress. The authors believe this procedure will provide a cost effective method of restoring actuated control on approaches or lanes groups where the pavement condition makes it unfeasible to install or re-install a traditional saw cut loop detector.

summary In previous efforts, the foundation of a general theory that searches for finding lightest manmade structures using the Delaunay diagram or its dual the Voronoi diagram was set (Ezzat, 2016). That foundation rests on using a simple and computationally cheap Centroid method. The simple Centroid method is expected to play a crucial role in the more sophisticated general theory. The Centroid method was simply about classifying a cloud of points that represents specific load case/s stresses on any object. That classification keeps changing using mathematical functions until optimal structures are found. The point cloud then is classified into different smaller points' groups; each of these groups was represented by a single positional point that is related to the points' group mean. Those representational points were used to generate the Delaunay or Voronoi diagrams, which are tested structurally to prove or disprove the optimality of the classification. There was not a single optimized classification out of that process but rather a family of them. The point cloud was the input to the centroid structural optimization, and the family of the optimized centroid method is the input to our proposed implementation of the general theory (see Figure 1). The centroid method produced promising optimized structures that performed from five to ten times better than the other tested variations. The centroid method was implemented using the two structural plugins of Millipede and Karmaba, which run under the environment of the Grasshopper plugin. The optimization itself is done using the grasshopper's component of Galapagos.
