title Constraint-Based Design in Participatory Housing Planning

summary We introduce some novel ideas for a constraint-based design strategy to support participatory housing planning processes in Latin America. The following lines intend to open the discussion on the requirements and effect of the computer implementation of a constraint satisfaction approach to solve elementary design problems in architectural practice. The case study applies to the building massing design problem posed by the Chilean urban regulatory framework that addresses single-family affordable houses. Two different implementation criteria are being tested in an ongoing series of trials providing further considerations. One prototype uses MAXON's CINEMA4D XPRESSO® visual scripting environment to set up a semi-automated design environment which allows users to edit one feature-based 3D model of massing alternative at a time. The other prototype uses ILOG's OPL STUDIO® constraint programming environment to achieve fully automated search and 2D visualization of all possible solution alternatives to separate subdomains of the building massing design problem.

summary The proportion of planning activity that concerns existing buildings is increasing steadily throughout Europe. In Germany it is estimated that already two thirds of architectural planning tasks are related to revitalisation, modernisation, conversion and reconstruction. For these types of projects in particular, clients are interested in obtaining an estimate of the building costs as early as possible. Because many details are unknown or can only be guessed, it is often difficult to make a reliable estimate. This article describes a software concept for the rapid, sketch-based capture of data on site with a view to obtaining a cost-assessment for a series of different revitalisation variants using a stochastic approach.

summary The research presented in this paper deals with the yet unexplored development of a constraint-based design strategy to support participatory housing planning processes in Latin America. The article discusses the implementation criteria of a constraint satisfaction approach to solving the building bulk design problem. This elementary problem to the architecture practice, is concerned with the synthesis of the boundary geometry from the volume, shape and allocation of the building and any part thereof located inside a given zoning lot. A legal solution to a building bulk design problem is a building cubature that complies with all the applicable bulk regulations. The case study applies to the common class of single-family house units produced in Chile and the regulatory framework implemented there. Two different computer implementation criteria are being tested in an ongoing series of trials. The first, and most extensively developed, makes use of Maxon’s XPresso® visual scripting environment to set up a semi-automated controllable design environment that allows to create parametric feature-based 3D models of building bulk solutions. The second approach is currently being tested by using Ilog’s OPL Studio® constraint programming environment to achieve fully automated search and 2D graphic visualization of the complete set of solutions to separate subdomains of the bulk problem.

summary The approach discussed here is part of research into an overall concept for digital instruments which support the entire planning process and help in enabling planning decisions to be based upon clear reasoning and plausible arguments. The paper describes a plausibility instrument for the formulation of colour scheme proposals for building interiors and elevations. With the help of intuitively usable light simulations, colour, material and spatial concepts can be assessed realistically. The software prototype “Coloured Architecture” is conceived as a professional extension to conventional design tools for the modelling of buildings. As such it can be used by the architect in the earliest design phases of the planning process as well as for colour implementation on location.

summary Since Hugh Ferris in 1922 started with a series of massing studies the visualization of zoning planning began to be a topic for architects. Setbacks, plot area ratio, maximum building height, and other important attributes must be handled by the architect to fulfill the law, the needs of the clients and his own inspiration. This paper presents the problem of envelope design for high-rise isolated housing buildings, as well as a new Decision Support Systems tool based on the platform of a BIM software, that allows to simulate several options for building envelope according to the parameters required by the city Zoning Planning. These options deliver reliable data and geometry, to be analyzed in real time for the architects, engineers, builders, government and the client in the early stages of the building’s design.

summary As building projects become increasingly more complex, the number of project participants grows as does their spatial distribution. An effective decentralised work process and co-operation is of increasing importance. The global computer network, the internet, has great potential and recent times have seen the development of a variety of techniques in this field. The project described here is based upon this approach and also takes it a step further. A specific analysis of the topic and the subsequent identification of potential approaches formed the basis for an architectural application that brings the architect in contact with other project participants using the internet as a powerful yet simple and easy to use medium.

summary Nowadays , we are able to produce geometric models of historical buildings at different scales of detail, using photos and measurements. This is true when you are observing something that is still under your eyes. We are faced more and more with lack of preservation actions and maintenance activities, policies framed without foresight, unexpected natural events, etc., that are forcing professionals and researchers to operate without usual data. In such cases, we need a consistent repository to collect and distribute data to produce information.Furthermore, we need to "give intelligence" to these repositories, in order to query them with respect to geometrical instances, topological issues, historical features, etc. This last aspect, (archives and databases connected with geometrical aspects), lead our digital model to a new dimension, the informative one (where spatial, temporal, historical and building parameters work together), that should always characterize speculative actions towards the constitution of a wealth of knowledge. We need to work on the efficiency of the process to reach effective methodologies of survey.

summary In Hong Kong, the Hakka settlements are the home of indigenous people who have been involved in agriculture and fishing for over 200 years, which has a special place in Hong Kong’s history. However, these settlements are gradually being abandoned as ghost towns due to rapid urbanisation, where the city is progressively constructing high-density habitats to accommodate the exponentially increased population since the 1950s. summary Building envelope design incorporates a range of light-related analyses, often providing an essential feedback loop for shaping an envelope’s performance, geometry, or components. This is true for solar radiation studies of envelopes, calculated irrespective of building material or assembly. Extending our light-related analysis to include diffuse lighting effects on a building interior presents an opportunity to explore the translucency, porosity, and forms of materials. Glazed architectural ceramic components fabricated using adaptive robotic manufacturing provide an opportunity to exploit material dynamics within the design and alleviate fabrication waste from molds, ultimately accelerating the production manufacturing system. In addition to analyzing the solar radiation on the building facade design, lighting effects can be engaged in profoundly different ways depending on the degree of design-production agency. The production process can be extended beyond automatic routines using robotic fabrication with levels of autonomous involvement that allow for alternative form expressions of the dynamic clay material. In addition to negotiating several design criteria, the design research will develop an aesthetic character originating from customized clay materials and robotic manufacturing processes for lighting transmittance architectural ceramics.

summary Romance awakens fond memories of the city. Finding out the relationship between romantic scene and urban morphology, and providing a prediction, can potentially facilitate the better urban design and urban life. Taking the Yangtze River Delta region of China as an example, this study aims to predict the distribution of romantic locations using deep learning based on multi-source data. Specifically, we use web crawlers to extract romance-related messages and geographic locations from social media platforms, and visualize them as romance heatmap. The urban environment and building features associated with romantic information are identified by Pearson correlation analysis and annotated in the city map. Then, both city labelled maps and romance heatmaps are fed into a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) as the training dataset to achieve final romance distribution predictions across regions for other cities. The ideal prediction results highlight the ability of deep learning techniques to quantify experience-based decision-making strategies that can be used in further research on urban design.

summary City develops gradually with the lapse of time. Cities, as a ‚container‚, are injected new urban elements along the trajectory of the times and the progress of human civilization, constructing the historical structures involved past, present and future. Thus, the cultural information of each era is preserved in the urban fabric together and urban fabric features are complex and rich, which are difficult to capture in traditional design methods. In this paper, we try to use Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), one of the neural network algorithms, to explore the inner rules of complex urban morphological features and realize the perception of the urban fabric. Neural networks are innovatively applied to the larger and more complex city generation in this experiment. First, we collect European urban fabric as the dataset, then label data to facilitate machine training, use GAN to learn the feature of the dataset by adjusting parameters, and analyze the effect of the generated results. The automatic feature learning capability of the neural networks is used to summarize the inherent patterns and rules in urban development which is difficult for human to discover.

summary The lack of consideration of subjective design intents hinders the application of performance-based design optimization to architectural design because building performance is not the only aspect that designers need to solve. In response, this study proposes a method integrating subjective design intents into performance-based design optimization using soft constraints. To demonstrate the method, a case study is presented, where the design optimization continuously provides feedback to the designer and helps them reformulate and redefine the design problem. The case study shows how the application of design optimization and soft constraints is able to assist designers in identifying implicit and hidden design problems and stimulate design exploration at the early design stage.

title ARCHIDNA: A GENREATIVE SYSTEM FOR SHAPE CONFIGURATONS

summary his thesis concerns a new generation process for shape configurations using a set of operations. The approach derives from analyzing a particular design style and programming them into a computer. It discusses how generative CAD software can be developed that embodies a style and how this software can serve in the architectural design process as a computational design tool. The thesis proposes a prototype software system, ArchiDNA, to demonstrate the use of operations to generate drawings in a specific design style. ArchiDNA employs a set of operations to produce design drawings of shape configuration in Peter Eisenman's style for the Biocentrum building plan in Frankfurt, Germany. The principles of form generation are defined as a set of operations. ArchiDNA generates 2D and 3D drawings similar to Eisenmans plan and model for the Biocentrum building. The extension system of ArchiDNA, called ArchiDNA++, supports designers in defining operations and generating shape configurations. Designers can enter and edit their own shapes for the generation process and also control the parameters and attributes for shape operations. Thus, designers can manage the generation process and explore using ArchiDNA++, to generate shape configurations that are consistent with their own drawing style.

summary In shortest terms: RAPIS is a metadatabase on spatial information in the “Vienna Region”. More interesting then this simple fact is the way how theproject was implemented and what the effects on regional development are.RAPIS is the acronym for “Regional Planning and Project Information System for the Vienna Region” and was implemented as the Austrian part of the Interreg IIc Project IM-PLAN (Implementation of models for co-operative planning in metropolitan regions). The aim was to create aninformation platform for planning relevant information for the whole region, integrating existing data sources from federal and state administrationas well as private companies. RAPIS enables an overview of the available spatial datasets in the "Vienna Region " and focuses on the following questions: Which datasets relevant for planning and development are available within the region? Who can use these datasets under which conditions? Which plans and projects do exist for the region? In addition also metainformation on the most important international data sources was collected as well as information to projects and plans with regional and trans-regional impacts. During the implementation great importance was given to communication and sensitisation for the importance the topic: geo-informationinfrastructre as a key ressource for spatial development and regional co-operation. It showed up that Austria and the "Vienna Region" have a very good initial position and excellent databases on national, state, local and international level. However, it seems that almost everything exists already but hardly anybody knows about it ... – potential users do not know what data and information already exists and how to get and use it. Intensive communication, information and permanent discussion of the topic „(Geo-) Information“ within the „planners community“ carried the topic into the public and strengthened the consciousness for the importance of information-infrastructure for regional co-operation.

summary In the context of the housing demands that respond to several family profiles, allied with the potential of the algorithmic approaches to Architecture, this paper aims to describe an exploratory process of possible solutions toward a generative system of housing distribution in vertical multifamily buildings. As a method, this work presents a parametric design process of a multifamily building, simulating a variety of shape solutions for apartment buildings, in a Grasshopper definition. The work also discusses the data transmission between the parametric modeling using Grasshopper in the Rhinoceros interface and the connection of the final design to Graphisoft’s Archicad BIM-based software. As a result, the parametric model allows several design solutions for several building shapes and contexts. For this study, to fully explore the design possibilities, we applied the method in the context of a Brazilian metropolitan city.

summary Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing are very important methods for acquisition of geodata. During the previous decade, severalrevolutionary changes occurred in this area. Until the appearance of automated image analysis tools, it was necessary to measureselected points in the images given. At that time, it was much faster and even cheaper to get images of real world objects compared tothe time and money consuming process of manual analyses. So one tried to minimize this effort by measuring only characteristicpoints such as edges, break-lines, peaks and valleys and, for sure, a grid with a given grid step which was selected to meet the efforts.Lots of information in the images was neglected.Digital point matching algorithms and airborne laser scanning provide many new possibilities. The only restriction on spatialresolution is the one of the used sensors. Given a more precise image sensor, the matching algorithm will be able to match moresurface points; given a higher frequency laser scanner, more points can be measured of the same area. And those sensors get moreand more precise every day. Besides, those techniques allow for fast repetition which is necessary to create time series as a basis for4D modeling! However, this fact is accompanied by several problems concerning the capability of available computers. Some years ago, as the first ideas of 3D city models arose, it was very difficult to acquire the necessary data. Today the new sensors and methods have thenecessary capability, but we are not able to handle the available datasets efficiently, because of shortcomings in the past. In a time ofworld wide data exchange through the internet and global datasets, it is necessary to have efficient methods and algorithms tomanage the available data. There is a need for international, vendor independent data exchange and management standards that haveto be accepted and supported by the industry. This article is going to present several methods of data encoding using standardized data formats based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML). After an introduction to this kind of data encoding, two derived applications for management, storage and presentation of geodata are described. As XML data is written in text format, the datasets have the ability to become rather long.Therefore some promising methods to reduce the amount of data are introduced afterwards. XML documents are mainly used fordata exchange between databases. Therefore the capabilities of commonly used database systems for storage of geodata are describedin the end and current implementation results of the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (I.P.F.) are presented.

summary In this paper we explore what EEG techniques teach us about people's responses to environments. We explain two complementary projects: a sound art installation in which a performer was rigged up with an EEG device and required to sit for 30 minutes in a chair. Around him were positioned custom-made instruments for generating electro-mechanical sounds. A screen behind the performer showed a dynamic geometrical image that altered according to his mood state and as picked up by EEG (engagement, meditation, frustration and excitement), while a sound technologist operated the instruments. We used the same sound sources for an experiment in which we tested people's responses to sounds. We discuss the spatial implications of this work.
