summary This paper expects to concur for the study of the relationship between technology, knowledge and representation. It is based on previous studies on architecture, art and technology on modernity and its development, as well as studies about scale in architectural design. In despite of the fact that scale can be technically considered indifferent for computer aided design, I wish to discuss how digital tools intercede in the process of clipping that selecting a specific scale eventually implies, sustaining that for architectural design, the concept of scale has to do both with representation and knowledge of reality.

summary In this paper we present a didactic tool named “STORM”, which simulates a real environment in which students can control and program a robot in a very basic way by simply setting switches to configure an action or an activity to be carried out by the robot. The control interface is totally graphic, so it can be used by students from primary schools to universities. The objective of the simulator is to create learning objects to develop the dynamic and strategic competences of students in addition to concepts such as robot navigation and control, and computer programming.

title Framework of an algorithm-aided BIM approach for modular residential building information models

summary The digital transformation of the construction industry and the lack of integration of digital technologies in design and construction processes are the motivation for this research. BIM solutions enable new levels of design processes and provide platforms for computational design and novel approaches in the AEC industry. In computational design parametric, generative or algorithmic procedures are utilized to support, optimize, or replace manual processes. The combination of BIM and generative, parametric or algorithmic design forms a hybrid that aims to combine the advantages of both concepts and allows for generative design processes with the creation of BIM objects containing metadata. Along with the digital transformation and novel approaches in the AEC industry, modular construction aims to shift from mass production to mass customization and maximize opportunities for cost-effective, economical, and sustainable buildings. This paper addresses the approach of generating building information models using algorithm-aided design combined with BIM at an early design stage for modular multi-story residential buildings that are affordable and sustainable. In this study, we present the framework of an algorithm-aided BIM approach, from the concept of the generative algorithm to the evaluation approach and the proof of concept as the test of the framework

summary This paper investigates the relationships between conventional modes of architectural design, those represented through and mediated by Cartesian schema, and the radical organization of spatial experience available through the use of NURBS modelling. This is examined particularly through a study of how game engine software and the appropriate editors are able to accommodate the properties of both. Within this software the first-person view attempts to provide a normalised experience of the VR environment (usually a game), yet there is significant scope for experiencing radically ‘other’ spatial and topological presences. Whilst considerable work has been done in the use of participatory digital spaces, there is the opportunity for examining the manner in which a highly stylised medium such as Unreal Tournament can productively assist the architectural design process.

summary The didactic proposal to which we are referring is the result of the research developed by the team focused on the topics related to the project didactics in pedagogical innovation environments. This path has made it possible to prepare a methodological device to design Learning Units, from which different scale curricular designs such as careers, courses and subjects have been implemented. The proposed matrix facilitates the exchange of dimensions involved in the project operation, handling our own digital culture and constituting a procedural input which enables non-lineal access to the issues raised in a cartographical approach.

summary The Digital Altarpiece is an immersive virtual temple that seeks to communicate a traditional funeral ritual from Ayacucho, Peru, and revive it in a contemporary environment. Due to the confinements in times of pandemic, these Peruvian Andean rituals of social integration were in danger of disappearing. The ancestral knowledge in humanity has a cultural and spiritual value. Through this project, the theory of dehumanization due to the excess of new technologies and the preservation of cultural memory using digital tools and machine learning are questioned. For this, digital memories were collected, photographs of physical spaces openly uploaded to the web by their authors. This data was extracted to learn features using GANs or Generative Adversarial Networks. The intention of using photographs from social networks was to reinterpret and discover a new local and collective perspective. Although artificial intelligences have the power to excite us with new figure proposals, we humans are experiencing the sensations of these pieces, and we can direct our technical explorations with new technologies that change so quickly, to cultural integration.

summary Drones are not just a new technology or a fun toy airplane with remote control, they are also a possible new and silent control mechanism. It would not be the first time in history nor the last in which a technological advance is used to monitor society and impress upon it the power of the State. The particularity of this case is that not only could it be misused by the government, but also some members of society could come together in an anarchic movement that, for example, could invade people's privacy, as the fact of knowing the lack of control over this type of practices.

summary This work presents a learning action developed to verify in what degree could the TIDIA-Ae virtual environment support design education emphasizing remote collaboration and the manipulation/visualization of data in multiple formats. The TIDIA-Ae virtual environment is a product of the Program on Information Technology in Development of Advanced Internet sponsored by the Foundation for the Support of Research of the State of São Paulo - FAPESP. A design exercise was developed enforcing the inclusion of guidelines for community integration and security, implementation, street system and parking, public, private and open space, and landscaping considering quality of life and sustainability for low income housing projects.

summary In the next 25 years, the elderly population will increase on average to 65 thousand people annually in Chile (INE, 2018). Their independent living is jeopardized partially for diminished visual capacity that difficult spatial perception. Although light does not correct vision impairment, adequate light levels can respond to the needs of older people as preventing visual errors. This study evaluates daylighting availability in an assisting living residence in a southern city in Chile. A quantitative approach resulted in the identification of envelope-retrofit strategies that allow achieving recommended levels of natural lighting, particularly in shared spaces where residents spend most of the day. The results show that it would be possible to achieve better light availability, as it also allows for a better understanding of the contributions of the building envelope. Finally, the study outlines recommendations for future retrofits that meet requirements for visual comfort for a growing senior population.

summary This paper stems from a research collaboration which brings together two disciplines at different ends of the scale spectrum: crystallography and architecture. The science of crystallography demonstrates that the properties of crystalline materials are a function of atomic/molecular interactions and arrangements at the atomic level—i.e., functions of the form and structure of the material. Some of these nano-geometries are frameworks with special characteristics, such as uni-directional porosity, multi-directional porosity, and varied combinations of flexibility and strength. This paper posits that the symmetry operations implicit in these materials can be regarded as a spatial grammar in the design of objects, spaces, and environments. The aim is to allow designers and architects to access the wealth of structural information that is now accumulated in crystallographic databases as well as the spatial symmetry logics utilized in crystallography to describe molecular arrangements. To enable this process, a bespoke software application has been developed as a tool-path to allow for interoperability between crystallographic datasets and CAD-based modelling systems. The application embeds the descriptive logic and generative principles of crystallographic symmetry. Using this software, the project, inter alia, produces results related to a class of geometrical surfaces called Triply Periodic Minimal (TPM) surfaces. In addition to digital iterations, a physical prototype of one such surface called the gyroid was constructed to test potential applications in design. The paper describes the development of these results and the conclusions derived from the first stage of user testing.

It also contains many juicy digital drawings and explores a variety of architectural subjects.

summary This paper attempt to bring some of the benefits obtained by the use of low fidelity prototypes in game development. These benefits were observed through the analysis of the development of six games developed in academic environment. However, with the limitations related to the size of the development team, and the project scope, some of the results obtained in this paper should not be adopted in every situation. There is, however, benefits described in this paper that can be observed in game development, regardless of its scope.

summary We present an evaluation model to analyze ambient information systems, based on attentional mechanisms. Taking Weiser and Brown (1996) concepts of Ubiquitous Computing and Calm Technology as a starting point, we delimit ambient information systems as those that can be monitored without requiring the focus of our attention. Using the theoretical framework from Cognitive Psychology, we propose an evaluation model to analyze ambient information systems, considering the attentional mechanisms involved in their use. As a conclusion, we outline a set of parameters to be considered during the design of ambient information systems.

summary This paper presents the different roles embraced by prototypes within the Design realms, when understood as a way to synthesize projects. The process of Design considers different dimensions, including people, technology and context, in which the prototype has a distinct role. On the way to synthesis, early solutions speculate, on a descriptive and conceptual way, about possible solutions to a given project in an early state. The importance of a clear communication between all stakeholders in the process to refine details is also studied.
