title Artificial intelligence and emergence in architecture: A multi-agent based model for design processes

summary The purpose of this paper is to provide an alternative approach to traditional design process formulation and elaboration. In contrast to traditional models of design process fundamentally defined by the abstract manipulation of objects, this study recognizes that the resources available for rethinking architecture are to be found in a reformulation of its theory and practice. This reformulation should be based on non-linear design processes in which dynamic emergence and invention take the place of a linear design process fixed on a particular object evolution. Design is possible to be defined in two different and commonly confused ways; one as the process of designing or design activity and the second as the product of designing. In this study, we are concerned with design as a process to emphasize the misconceptions, derived from studying design products solely. Therefore, we propose a change from a design knowledge based on objects to a one focused on design as a network of processes.

This article analyzes the specific experience of the Virtual Studio .Habitar a Cidade., in opposition to the concept of a VDS and in a comparative perspective to another VDS experience already carried in the past, in order to identify common issues and specific aspects that differentiate them. It also discusses how much methodological questions are determinant in a VDS and how, in academic virtual studios, this aspect can be more significant than the technological ones. This is especially important considering the technological limitations, related to the economic limitations of Brazilian universities and society.

The result of this work will be a book supported by a website that will help to understand the urban development of São Paulo and the meaning of this kind of buildings in the context of the city.

title Lost In Hyperspace: Cognitive Mapping and Navigation in a Hypertext Environment, Chapter 7

summary This paper describes an experiment which looks at how the users of a hypertext document cognitively represent its layout. A document was formed into three different hypertext styles and was presented to the readers, they were then asked a series of questions about information contained in the hypertexts. The way the users found the answers and the time taken was recorded, they were also ask to lay out cards, with reduced versions of the screen on them, on a board and as they thought them to be arranged in the document and also to draw any connecting hypertext links they thought existed between these screens. The users selected for this experiment consisted of 27 university undergraduates 15 male and 12 female with a mean age of 20.5 years with little or no computing experience. They were each assigned one of the three hypertext methods and their performance was recorded. The three methods consisted of a hierarchical, a mixed and an index based method.

summary The paper presents research findings on the development of strategies for biomimetic design, that synthesize contemporary digital technologies of analysis, design, and prototyping. The proposed methodology has been validated through three case studies of biological shells which were analyzed with digital imaging technologies (SEM) to identify biomimetic design principles. Algorithmic design tools were implemented as part of a “design by analogy” process to extract and emulate the biological design solutions, to be constructed with the use of additive manufacturing (AM). A set of design iterations was produced with incremental changes in functional design parameters to examine the technical properties of the structure through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and mechanical testing of the physical specimens and identify trends in its mechanical performance. Within the methodology developed in this research, bidirectional loops of feedback between the different stages of biomimetic design were created. The topological characteristics and function of the biomimetic models informed the AM technology and process, as well as the FEA and testing methods. At the same time, the fabrication requirements, and constraints along with the mechanical characterization results counter-informed the biologically inspired designs. The paper presents the outcomes of this iterative optimization process, supporting the role of biomimicry for the development of efficient and sustainable design solutions that can be applied to contemporary design, responding to architectural and engineering challenges.

summary This paper explores the dynamic interplay between computational design, digital simulation and physical modeling in the creation of an innovative architectural intervention within a historical office building in Athens. Spanning several decades of construction (1930s-1980s), the building's illumination waned amidst the encroachment of contemporary structures. Our solution involves a meticulously designed 2.60*2.60m light well, carving through the building's core and housing a nine-storey generative sculpture. This colossal kaleidoscopic prism, working in tandem with a heliostat, serves both as a striking aesthetic statement and an efficient lighting apparatus, ensuring stable natural lighting conditions in the surrounding office space. During the form-finding phase, rigorous computational processes guided the placement of reflective and refractive triangles within the sculpture, achieving specific degrees of porosity and performativity. Simultaneously addressing a demanding architectural program while enhancing spatial qualities, the apparatus showcases its multifaceted nature. Physical modeling played a pivotal role, with a precise model constructed from true-to-scale materials. Employing photometry, we validated lighting performance, bridging the gap between computational simulations and real-world applicability. The confluence of computational design and physical computation not only shapes the aesthetic and functional aspects of the generative sculpture but also fortifies the credibility of its lighting performance. As the work undergoes construction in Athens, this paper offers a comprehensive exploration of the innovative synergy between computational and physical methodologies, providing valuable insights into the seamless integration of cutting-edge technologies with traditional architectural practices. Within the paper, we present the intricacies of the computational apparatus, showcasing conceptual and user-friendly implementations for accessibility by non-specialist end users. We delve into digital simulation steps, integrating their findings and cross-referencing them with their physical computation counterparts, offering a holistic understanding of the project, from the standpoint of the computational designer.

summary Each new design problem in architecture presents a new set of requirements .A designer must remain aware of these requirements and effectively communicate them to collaborators because the degree to which the requirements are met will determine the success of the solution. This thesis explores how design can be effectively presented in a medium that is both explorative of form and descriptive of the design problem’s requirements. To facilitate this, we present Smart Objects, a constraint-based three-dimensional(3D) computer program. In Smart Objects, design intentions of an architectural problem are embedded as constraints into the modeled objects that compose a formal solution. A model is presented through a 3DVirtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) viewer and constrained by a software program we wrote in the Java language. Both the VRML viewer and the Java program are contained within a single web page. In Smart Objectsd. A designer meets or violates constraints, objects behave in a manner that reflects the requirements of the problem and intentions of the designer. SmartObjects communicates the design principles and guidelines that inform an architectural design to the collaborators involved in the project. It ensures that these principles and guidelines are maintained as the design progresses.

summary This paper describes `Quick-sketch', a 2D and 3D modelling tool for pen-based computers. Users of this system define a model by simple pen strokes, drawn directlyon the screen of a pen-based PC. Exact shapes and geometric relationships are interpreted from the sketch. The system can also be used to sketch 3D solid objects andB-spline surfaces. These objects may be refined by defining 2D and 3D geometric constraints. A novel graph-based constraint solver is used to establish the geometricrelationships, or to maintain them when manipulating the objects interactively. The approach presented here is a first step towards a conceptual design system.Quick-sketch can be used as a hand sketching front-end to more sophisticated modelling, rendering or animation systems.

summary This paper is a report on authors' ongoing effort in creating a universal model for architectural programming. Authors analyse three well-known formats for architectural programming and devise a UML model representing each format. The UML models are further analysed and compared to form a super UML model that can bring together all the three formats under one roof and act as a universal format for architectural programming (UFPOR). The results improve the integration of architectural programming and BIM data models and are of value to the software development field and architectural programing.

summary The convergence of digital design and fabrication technologies have offered architects and designers the means by which to develop customized architectural artifacts, ones that goes beyond the standards of "one size fits all". Such applications have been applied extensively in various architectural practices, and specifically in the realm of industrialized building production, given that they present a suitable model. Although unrecognized within standard precast concrete production, current research acknowledges the need for advanced computer applications for shifting the industry into a digitized process. This paper represent a critical phase of an ongoing research endeavor that aims at rethinking the precast concrete production in the UAE, and MENA region for housing typologies. The project explores possibilities of a new protocol that is focused from design to production, relying on performative design strategies, and possible optimized for large format 3D printing of concrete elements. The aim is to develop an integrated façade panels system that is tailored for design and production; an approach that goes beyond current industry practices.

summary While primarily admired for their material efficiency and aesthetic potentials, form-active fabric structures also offer original solutions to architectural design, modulating spaces with pliable and soft surface qualities. Their application, however, is hindered by the need for a profound understanding of the relationship between morphology, structure, and materialization. To comprehend and resolve these interdependencies, architects and engineers employ the means of form-finding. Existing form-finding methods for fabric structures exist either in purely digital or purely physical mediums. This paper introduces a cyber-physical form-finding method that seeks the equilibrium state of highly articulated fabric structures through sensorial modeling and emergent behavior of interacting forces. By embracing the softness and inherent responsiveness of elastic fabrics, this research presents an interactive form-finding approach for form-active material system where real-time shape adjustments are performed through hands-on manipulation. The developed design interface enables designers and user to swiftly explore numerous fabric morphologies in their equilibrium, suggesting intuitive tangible means of design communication.

title A Digital Incorporation of Ergonomics into Architectural Design

summary A project that is particularly designed for digital studio settings is described. Facilitated by multiple computer modeling and animation software, the project incorporates concepts and applications of ergonomics and kinetics as two ingredients and concept generators with problem-based learning techniques into architectural designing. Reflections about the project and its outcomes are reported and discussed. The results indicate that considerations of ergonomics, flexibility, mobility and responsiveness in dynamic structures and their interactions with users can enrich and optimize generated designs. Similarly, the application of problem-based designing approach seems to foster critical thinking of participants and improve their involvement in collaborative design processing.

summary Since 2006 the Faculty of Architecture of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has organized the ‘1-2-TRE’ workshops on digital timber fabrication. The annual one-semester courses explore the possibilities and conditions of file-to-factory processes in cooperation with professional carpentries. The 2007 course focused on adding varied simple elements to a complex whole. Within a full semester course, a permanent viewing platform for the Botanical Garden of Trondheim was designed, produced and built by the participating students.

summary The methodology presented here is grounded on the reconstruction of the urban body as a network configuration consisting of material and non-material components (Bateson, 1972). It is based on the assumption that if one can describe the rules that define the nodes and the connections of the network construction/urban body, as well as their attributes, then the differentiation on the relationships between elements, or even a shift from one value to another, would result in different network constructions, that would produce a time-based sequence of the self-adaptational and self-organizational reconfigurations occurring during the mutational procedure. The urban body is defined as the part of the urban tissue which distinguishes itself from the whole of the urban landscape, either because of constructed boundaries, or because of the strengthening of a specific attribute, which would result in a kind of an immaterial boundary, or, in other words the formation of an identity.

summary During the fifty years sinee the Second World War, a paradigm shift has taken place that should have profoundly affected architecture: this was the shift from the mechanicai paradigm to the electrorlic one. This change can be simply understood by comparing the impact of the role of the human subject on such primary modes of reproduction as the photograph and the fax; the photograph within the mechanical paradigm, the fax within the electronic one. In photographic reproduction the subiect still maintains a controlled interaction with the object. A photograph can be developed with more or less contrast, texture or clarity.

summary The main aim of this research is to harness deep learning techniques to support architectural design problems in early design phases, for example, to enable auto-completion of unfinished designs. For this purpose, we investigate the possibilities offered by established deep learning libraries such as TensorFlow. In this paper, we address a core challenge that arises, namely the transformation of semantic building information into a tensor format that can be processed by the libraries. Specifically, we address the representation of information about room types of a building and type of connection between the respective rooms. We develop and discuss five formats. Results of an initial evaluation based on a classification task show that all formats are suitable for training deep learning networks. However, a clear winner could be determined as well, for which a maximum value of 98% for validation accuracy could be achieved.

summary This paper contributes the current research state and possible future developments of AI-based autocompletion of architectural floor plans and shows demand for its establishment in computer-aided architectural design to facilitate decent work, economic growth through accelerating the design process to meet the future workload. Foundations of data representations together with the autocompletion contexts are defined, existing methods described and evaluated in the integrated literature review, and criteria for qualitative and sustainable autocompletion are proposed. Subsequently, we contribute three unique deep learning-based autocompletion methods currently in development for the research project metis-II. They are described in detail from a technical point of view on the backdrop of how they adhere to the proposed criteria for creating our novel AI.
